    I personally enjoy doing this game backwards. I like to start out at 30 and work my way down to 1. I tend to lose interest after a couple days, so id rather just go balls to the wall in the beginning so I know I'm getting rid of more stuff early on.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +9

      Someone else (or perhaps you) mentioned this as a comment the first time I did this challenge. I think it's an intriguing idea! I personally like for the challenge to ramp up, but I can imagine that it would be somewhat different psychologically to do it backwards.

      Interesting! Cool concept!

    • @brittanyw4563
      @brittanyw4563 6 лет назад

      The purpose of the game is to ramp up and get in the habit of declutter if every day. That’s why the 1-30 method is best.

    • @JessieGoGreen
      @JessieGoGreen 6 лет назад +16

      Im well aware of the purpose, but if you're anything like me, then you will find that the reverse option is more practical. Its very easy for me to get rid of stuff, so reverse just works best for me. Plus I tend to lose interest quickly so Id rather go hard in the beginning.

      JessieGoGreen excellent idea. I think backwards would work better for me too.

    I brought my sixth car load (2018 Spring Cleaning) of donated items to Goodwill this morning. And I have another load ready to go. It's crazy how much I find despite my friends all thinking my place is sparsely decorated.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +8

      The more I purge, the more I've come to develop a different relationship to my possessions, so the bar keeps moving and the definition of what I "need" keeps changing. Maybe you're experiencing a little of that yourself. I too get the "your house is so organized, how do you have more stuff to declutter" comment, but, in my house, we have a lot of storage (cabinets, closets, etc), so it may look sparse on the surface but there are things, there are things lurking!

  • @patriciafisher3108

    I liked this video because you gave JUST ENOUGH details without being tedious. I got a laugh when you showed the funny hats and made the comment about the fact that yes you are a tax paying adult. I am glad you have a silly side.
    I do not play the minamalist game per say. I play my own version of it. I make myself a quota of the number of things I must part with in a month's time. I keep a running total as I declutter. I am always happy with myself because by the end of the month I always exceed my self imposed quota. Forgot to add, that if I bring anything new into my place, it gets deducted from my running total. This last move keeps me from getting delusional about how much I am reducing the junk in my environment. Just keeping it real ( :

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Your method sounds great! If I remember calculating this a while ago correctly, the game makes you part with 465 items in 30 days. Just throwing that out there for comparison, as I have no idea what your personal quota is. What is your quota? Does it fluctuate?

    • @patriciafisher3108
      @patriciafisher3108 6 лет назад +1

      In the past I have made it 100 items and sometimes 50. Yes the amount does fluctuate. For June, I chose to get rid of 30 items. This may not seem like a lot, but I have been doing this for sometime now, and I do not have a lot to get rid of. I will report back to you June 30th and let you know how it went. It is June 2nd and I have gotten rid of 4 items so far. On my radar are a few pairs of earrings I am ready to let go of, a few plants, some hardware items, a lemon squeezer I bought feeling sure I would use it ( I did not, and it is taking up space in my drawer )

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +3

      That definitely will stack up over time! I think I'm circling the drain and am close to being finished myself. I'm doing the game again now (for June) and this might be the last major purge I do for a while.

    • @patriciafisher3108
      @patriciafisher3108 6 лет назад +1

      Good luck this month. I look forward to seeing your end of June purging video. I decided to up my game and purge 60 items rather than just 30. I can do this ( :
      See you at the finish line.

    I really like the way you narrate every item that goes. I'm usually listening to these videos as motivation while I'm decluttering or cleaning and videos with loud annoying music and little to no narration stop my progress so I can watch. Thanks!

    @CalmVibesVee 6 лет назад +8

    Well done. I haven’t decluttered in 2-3 months and am due for some freedom. Thanks for the inspiration! I enjoyed it
    Another popular way is taking everything out of the bathroom for example and putting in a box in a closet. Then, as needed, only taking out what you need to use and then they get to stay in your bathroom. The box can be reevaluated in a month or two for exiting the house.
    My most common way is to keep a box in a closet and as I find things to declutter I put them in the box and take to charity shop when full.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +3

      lol, I literally just replied to another comment saying that I want to be in a position soon where I have one, small donation box in a closet that I empty every few months. I'm doing the MG again this month, but, hopefully after this, I will be able to take it a bit slower.

    You inspire me on a weekly basis. Thank you so much. 👍🏻.
    Could you talk about your ‘donate vs. sell’ philosophy?

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +6

      I have a video that covers this topic: ruclips.net/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/видео.html From this minimalism game, there are two things I will attempt to sell. From my last, I didn't sell anything. I personally prefer to get items out of my house as quickly as possible, which means taking the path of least resistance and donating/recycling. I've also come to terms with not feeling like I need to recover the cost of my items. I've had most of my belongings for a long time, and, in that time, I've either gotten my money's worth or the item has depreciated to the point that I don't feel driven to get money back for it. Reaching the goals I've set for myself in my home is more important to me, so speed is preferred.

    • @Mi-kf5bc
      @Mi-kf5bc 6 лет назад

      Alas, I should have searched for the aforementioned video before asking 😁. Apologies. Thank you for your in-depth response. I agree wholeheartedly with your approach...especially since things that stick around in a pile at the front door - even for a few days extra - tend to find their way back into circulation no matter how determined we are* (*were) to get rid of them.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      No worries! I could probably talk about it a lot more, but, since I know everyone is different, I don't want to push people to donate if they're in a position where they do want to recover the cost. That's just what works for me.

    I do clothing culls semi-regularly and find myself gravitating toward wearing a very specific palette. And, grateful as I may be for her doing this, my clutter comes from my mom gifting me with clothing. Though, I have a large, plush sweater outside of my chosen palette which I am obsessed with because it’s essentially a blanket made into a jacket.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад

      If your mom often gives you clothing, then she probably likes clothing and would totally understand a person, i.e. you, having your own preferences and opinions about clothes. Why don't you talk to her? Take her shopping and while you're out show her the kinds of things you're gravitating towards. We also live in a post-Marie-Kondo-on-Netflix world, so minimalism isn't a foreign concept anymore. If you want to own fewer pieces in your wardrobe, she'll likely understand or at least accept it.

    This looks like so much fun actually 😀 My partner and I cleaned out our kitchen today and we probably ditched enough items for half a month, but since it‘s the beginning of the month I think I am actually going to try this out starting with 3 items tomorrow. Thank you!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +2

      Yay! I hope you like it. You might be surprised--I'm doing the challenge again right now (started June 1) and I made a note to myself of all the things I could think of to get rid of off the top of my head, it looked long and satisfying, and then I counted it... 23 items. The game makes you get rid of 465, I think. That said, if you're doing this for the first time, you will have more than enough. This is round three for me and I'm a little nervous, but I'm determined to finish. Best of luck!

    I just found your channel today and I am super excited about this game! We’ve lived in our house for 15 years and inside every cabinet and closet is clutter! I am starting this today! I think because I have so much, that I will start with 10 items per day for the first 10 days and then start the normal schedule, and for me, I think I will focus on one cabinet, closet, area at a time, so I can actually notice a difference because I have so much junk 😂 tyfs and inspiring me! 😊

    Astonishingly enough, I enjoyed WATCHING this video ... you did it in a nicely uncluttered way! And THANK YOU for sharing your adorable (and very quiet) cat. I have completed the 30-day Minimalism Game a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed the process. Now, on the odd occasion when I FEEL cluttered, whatever date in the month it happens to be, I will declutter that number of items ... and I get to feel virtuous as well as more clear! Thank you for the inspiration to do a 1-30 again.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! Ha, I literally laughed out loud when you called my cat quiet. We recently put her on a diet, and man oh man does she like to complain about it! After three rounds, I think I'm done with the challenge for a while, but I plan to do it again at least once a year. I really like your idea of using the date of the month for a quick spruce when you feel the need. Maybe I'll give that a try!

    Huge Congrats on completing this challenge again! I must agree with the viewer before me - you do inspire me every week. Thanks for another great video. I went through a mini-purge last night of some boxes I'd left unsorted during the last clean out. I have enough from those for probably the first week of June. I think I'll try this challenge for the rest of the month and see how it goes. I know of several pockets of items that should produce enough for 30 days' worth of discards.
    My son laughs at me because I tend to save--and fight to keep--certain items: bottle caps, corks from wine bottles, and fortunes from Chinese takeout. I've dedicated several smallish metal tins to keeping things like movie ticket stubs, tickets from places I went to with my kid when he was little, rubber ducks from a hotel we stayed at on a big vacation we took. I don't think I'll ever be minimalist enough to throw those out. I told him they were going to be my legacy, and that when I'm gone, he'll have to decide what to do with them.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +3

      Give it a try! I'd love to hear how it works for you. Years ago I had a ribbon board (a sort of quilted board with ribbons crisscrossing it so you can slot things behind the ribbons and they're held in place) that kept a rotating collection of ticket stubs, photos, and fortune cookie fortunes, so I understand the appeal. The board is long gone, but I only parted with most of the items it previously contained during my first minimalism game. I still have an envelope of ticket stubs from concerts that I went to with my dad. Pretty sure the ink on my Eric Clapton stub (which was the first concert I ever went to) is almost completely worn away. I hope to deal with them soon as I'm currently tackling my photo collection, which is where the tickets live... The video I have planned for next week is actually all about sentimental items, so look out for that one! And good luck with the game!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I'm not sure I can do a refrigerator or car declutter as there isn't much in those spaces to begin with. We're trying to meal prep/only buy what we actually plan to eat in a week, and we "declutter" the refrigerator every week when we take out compost, so there's nothing in there that we don't use. My car is also pretty empty. I have two reusable shopping bags, a rollerball perfume, hand sanitizer, a phone charger, tire gauge, proof of insurance, and a tiny packet of camping toilet paper that I bought in the checkout line of an REI because it seemed like a good, apocalyptic thing to have in my car. Thankfully I've never had to use it.

    Thanks for another fascinating video. It was fun recognising items from other videos you have done! Something you might like to consider once you have done the Mins Game again and got to where you want to be, is to take inventory. I resisted this for some while, but did it a few months ago. Interesting, I still had more stuff than I thought I had (we don't live in a big apartment). A few things I had forgotten I had so they went out. Counting my stuff and shared items the original count was about 430 something items. I got it down to about 360 and then realised I was at a kind of steady state with my belongings. So I deleted the inventory. But it was interesting to do. Keep on with the videos - I always enjoy them and your approach to making them.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      Pppppffffftttttt! An inventory sounds wonderful, and I'm not opposed to it, but I'd bet I still have thousands of things. Maybe not thousands plural, but I would not be surprised if I had over a thousand. Maybe even thousands plural. I guess I'll need to take inventory and find out!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      Ok, I'm actually getting a headache thinking about it--still interested, but damn it sounds hard. It makes me think of those jars of candy where you have to guess how many are in the jar to win a prize, except my house is the jar and there is no prize except for self-awareness, which might be worth it.

    • @susanashton6608
      @susanashton6608 6 лет назад

      Sorry, didn't mean to give you a headache!!! And you can make up your own rules..... just sayin'......I will tell you mine if you like, and if it won't give you a worse headache.....

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      Sure, what are your rules?

    • @susanashton6608
      @susanashton6608 6 лет назад

      OK, I didn't count consumables - food stores and toiletries. I counted some baskets of items, like shoe cleaning stuff, light bulbs etc and the cat's belongings as one item each (I do fairly regular mini declutters so I felt OK about that), but I did count the few books I have as individual items and I counted all my clothes (including underwear) separately. Like you I have a 40 item wardrobe but I apparently have about 15 pairs of underwear! Who knew? I didn't till I counted. I classified stuff under headings, like everything in the kitchen, electronics, bathroom items, linens, furniture, pictures etc. so that made it easier. I don't have an attic, a basement or a garage so that simplified matters - a lot! If I lived on my own, I would have less stuff, but I share a home so I have to compromise. I still forgot things though. It was quite a fun thing to do and interesting, but don't do it if the thought gives you a headache - I don't wish to give people headaches - not cool!

    Please tell me you are shredding papers/documents with personal information. And, my jaw actually dropped when you mentioned having a storage unit. WHY?! You have such a big house! You're so good at decluttering! Surely you could absorb everything into your house that you want to keep from the storage unit right?

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, I shredded the sensitive papers, and *I should clarify about the "storage unit"*: I don't pay for any kind of storage, but my house has a little outside (non-livable space) room attached to it that holds our tools and garden equipment and Christmas decorations and my husband's trove of camping equipment and our bikes. I refer to it as the "storage unit" because I don't know what else to call it. We don't have a garage, so all the things that would usually live in a garage live there. It does, however, currently contain more things than I want. I'm doing the minimalism game again right now, and I've decided that day 30 will be entirely stuff from that area, which I've tasked my husband to deal with, as most of the stuff there is his. If it were mine, it would probably be entirely empty, except for my bike.

    I lump stuff together like all those tea lights would have been counting as 1 item or the heart measuring cups would account for 1 not like 3 or 4 how ever many there were. I look on my crafting table and even after getting rid of a bunch yesterday I still could double play this game on just that tablle. This is a nice way to start out but with hardcore people like me I have to get rid of alot of stuff at once then do the challenge it wouldnt even make a dent. I really dont .have alot of stuff but I live in a tiny basement and its always cluttered. Keep up the good work.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      I didn't get rid of the heart measuring cups, but I know what you mean, and sometimes I count groups of things as 1 item as well--it just depends on the day. I'm playing the game again and there are a few things I plan to part with, like an unopened pack of pencils and and a sleeve of bobby pins that I intend to count as one item each. In my first 30 day challenge video, I mention how I recommend doing something a little more broad and sweeping, like KonMari-ing, first before you do this challenge, both because KonMari-ing gives you the impact of seeing all of your crap together in one place, and because it's easier to make significant progress that way. On the other hand, if someone cannot bring themselves to use a method like this, the 30 day challenge could be a good way to ease into decluttering. Best of luck with your craft stuff!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +1

      They are gone and it's wonderful! I had a moment of hesitation wondering what I would do if I needed a towel that can be used to wipe up something gross, as I don't want to use my nice towels in that scenario, but I remembered we still have two beach towels that I don't care about, so they can handle the weird, gross situations, should the need arise. Good luck getting rid of your own! It is worth it.

    • @Telcomvic

      We use the 2nd tier towels to dry the SUV and truck after a car wash and also dry the boat after we take it out of the water. Some of the better looking ones we keep on the boat. No use getting mud and stains on the good towels, right? I also have two on the front bucket seats of my SUV as the seats are black and they get really hot when the vehicle sits in the sun at the boat ramp. Ouch when sitting on them in shorts or a bathing suit!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      I too have black leather seats in my car. I usually grab a reusable bag from my backseat if I need something to shield me from the heat. I've burned my legs many times...

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +8

      Nooooo!! I didn't, actually. I got rid of a penguin hat, a hat shaped like a birthday cake, and a hat with bunny ears. I do not own a HP hat, but I do own HP Gryffindor scarves, which I still have, but I might be getting rid of them soon. They were purchased from a Halloween costume store, so they're probably made from plastic and aren't high quality. If I get rid of the garbage ones, I may replace them with hand-knit ones from Etsy so I can be a respectable fan and wear them when my husband and I binge the movies every fall.

    i used to grind my teeth so bad! when i learned that grinding teeth is from intestinal parasites (very common for people who have pets in the house) , I started drinking Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth and now the grinding almost is gone! Some nights i dont grind at all. I also would give the earth to my cat and her energy sky rocketed! I strongly suggest cleansing from parasites omce in a while. That diatomaceous earth is so amazing!!! My whole body just comes ALIVE when I detox.

      Jami- I started with about 1 teaspoon in my smoothie and then build up to a tablespoon. I used it every single day for about a month when I started, and now I only take it about 1 or 2 times a week, about 2 HEAPING Tablespoons in smoothie, and feel INCREDIBLE. When I first started, I felt a difference within 3 days.

      lol, welp, you accomplished basically the same thing in much less time! In the first video I made on this topic, I mentioned that I think this method is better to do after using something like the Kon Mari method first. At the time, I said that because I believe there's value in seeing the magnitude of what you're starting with, which konmari-ing definitely shows. I didn't even think about it from the perspective of having too much in the beginning to get much value out of it, but I can see how that could easily be the case. It sounds like you have some momentum, so keep going, but do revisit this idea and give it a try down the road!

    I loved this video. Did you find a new solution to hold toothbrushes? I keep ours in a little drinking glass and switch it with a new one every month. I just put the used one in the dishwasher after I spray some vinegar in it. I never have to deal with a yucky cleaning task this way. For another decluttering challenge, have you considered the “packing party” method? I’ve never done it but it sounds sooo intriguing. Maybe you could do one room in your house? I lost the mins game last month but got quite far. After watching your video I really want to do it again! We’re so busy this month; I might make myself wait until July and build up anticipation. 😀

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      I've tried the packing party before in my bathroom (not in a video, just a long time ago). It was ok, but I don't think it really taught me anything I didn't already know. If I had more things or actually needed convincing to declutter, it might have been more of a revelation. Re: toothbrushes: when we first moved back into our master bathroom a few weeks ago, we were using a drinking glass as well, but I found that the rim of the glass was too wide to hold the items up straight enough for my liking. (We keep it in the medicine cabinet, so I wanted the toothbrushes to stand up straighter and not jut out and lean on other things.) I found a white, rubberized glass toothbrush holder with a narrow opening, and it's been working great!

    the minimalism game seems to be a good method to get rid of random stuff that doesn't fit a category like books, stationery, make up etc. and i gues, we all have those random things that we just own and never use.

    I'd love to do this, but I live with my parents right now and I can't get rid of anything that's theirs. I don't know if I have enough items of my own to successfully do this. But perhaps I'll try!

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +5

      When I was young and lived with my parents, I was something of an organized hoarder and I definitely had enough things to complete this challenge, but everyone is different. If you think your parents could benefit from a bit of a clear out and think they might be open to it, you could mention it to them and perhaps they would do it along with you. I'm doing it again in June and I've tasked my husband with two of the big days (20 and 30) to get him involved and have him deal with some of the spaces that are full of his stuff. You could also play the game as an experiment and put your items in a box just to see what it could be like, but make no actual commitment to get rid of the items. I think doing something like that would definitely help to show you what is most important, and you might decide to part with some of the things after all.

    I have a real detachment to the things that I own and I have a to of stuff that I want to get rid of. Could you make a video of just how or where to donate things in the best of places. I don’t want anything to go to landfill but for example all your used cleaning supplies and personal care products?

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      I have a video on this topic: ruclips.net/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/видео.html

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад

      That video is particularly about clothing, but the principles could apply to just about anything. Re: cleaning supplies: I forced myself to go on a cleaning spree to use them up. I also kept a good number not shown in this video, and I am forcing myself to live with them and use them up so I really learn a lesson not to buy that many cleaning supplies again. Some municipalities have hazardous waste disposal, but it's sort of a gamble as to what they do with them. They probably end up in the "hazardous waste" version of a landfill. Same about personal care products: use them up, or they likely WILL end up in landfill. I know it sucks that there's no great solution for disposing of everything, but that's a lesson many of us need to learn, myself included.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +4

      I mentioned this in the intro, but, there were some things that I knew I wanted to get rid of as part of this challenge that I also wanted to make separate videos about, and one of those things was shoes. So I let myself film a "shoe decluttering" video first, and then I set those shoes aside to be counted as part of this challenge. I also made a video about decluttering pet supplies, and I included items from that declutter as well. If I didn't have a youtube channel where I document all of my decluttering, I could have preserved the order, but, since I did want to share those topics separately with you guys, the chronology was a bit messed up. Hope this explains it!

    I'm sorry, but does this game not just stand your way to reach your goals? Why not just get rid of the stuff when you identify them as clutter? I do it allmost daily now. I have only a place for the stuff I will give away in my entrance, where it is allowed to stay for a bit, the rest just goes out immediately. Okay I have alot of stuff still, but I feel good clearing a place every day. Sometimes it takes longer, and sometimes it is easy done, I just choose a place there match my willpower of the day. But anyway I'm just skeptic about this game, because it would be to slow progress for me. Hope you are doing good free up your own space! :)

      If you check out the video I made the first time I did this challenge, you can learn more about my overall decluttering journey and where this particular method fits in, as well as my critiques of this method. To address your concern, I have used other methods, including Kon Mari-ing my house category by category and space by space. Each method has it's pros and cons, and I've found this method especially useful for identifying those things that manage to slip through the cracks, which can sometimes happen (at least it happened to me) when using broader methods.

    When you get rid of stuff, do you throw out or donate or what do you do with it?

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  6 лет назад +2

      I made a video specifically on what I do with clothing. The same principles can be generalized to just about everything: ruclips.net/video/kVVqCAZ3ABU/видео.html TL;DR: I donate only the really good stuff; I recycle a lot, including taking items to local recycle and reuse centers where you can recycle more stuff than you can in single-stream recycling; and I almost never sell stuff because I personally value getting the item out of my house more than I care about recovering cost. It's also worth noting that many of us, myself included, wish there was some magical way to recycle everything, but that's not reality and a relative lot of things end up in landfills. Even some things we try to recycle end up in landfills. I think the best we can do is recognize that, learn from our mistakes, and adjust our consumption behaviors in the future. Hope this helps!
