    I think you've hit the nail on the head in equating over-consumption with a lack of abundance. I read somewhere that one way to reduce unnecessary consumption was to have a hobby: the satisfaction of the hobby fills the emotional need previously filled by shopping.

    • @HannaMicheleRoss
      @HannaMicheleRoss  2 месяца назад +8

      I think I actually have that exact point in a video I did a while back! I think it's a great strategy. Having something meaningful to run towards really helps when you are trying to limit unintentional consumption! Thank you kindly for your comment!

      Yeah but then it should be a hobby that doesn't require getting equippment and material for it, because that can also quickly get overboard.

      I was just reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron and this quote stood out to me:
      “[…Attention to the final product] ignores the fact that creativity lies not with the done but in the doing. ‘I am writing a screenplay’ is infinitely more interesting to the soul than ‘I have written a screenplay,’ which pleases the ego. ‘I am in an acting class’ is infinitely more interesting than ‘I took an acting class a few years ago.’”
      I think that many of us get stuck in the trap of buying supplies because that feels like a process of motion, whereas having the items is perhaps less fulfilling. Then we need to actually get started in the Creating for Real - but equipping ourselves for that journey is so much more without risk, yet still feels like forward momentum.
      I have, it seems, just about every tool available to me, as well as books, lessons, and theory. But actually following through on my interest/hobby/passion feels stiflingly difficult! (Hence reading the book in the first place! Also perhaps another form of procrastination. 😅)
      Which is to say that, on the whole, I agree - but so many of us focus on readying for that journey, as opposed to following through on it!

    I love the part where you equate overconsumption to the feeling of lack or not having enough … I had never thought of it that way and yet I immediately understood it. I have always been surrounded by people who constantly craved things and from childhood I shrunk away from it as a result. It is only now that I am considerably older I recognize that my fewer possessions still bring me so much more happiness and joy because they make me feel satisfied - filled rather than empty. I always have enough! … I love that you are still sharing your perspective because I appreciate it!

    I decided to not buy any skin care products till they were finished. Like no new facewash that I wanted to try till my current one ends. I did the same with every single essential skincare products and now I only have the essential things. I was kinda a skincare addict. Same with makeup like no buying similar shades of lip tint or omg lip balms. In clothes, I allowed myself to have some colour and more function. Currently, only have 2 footwear, one sandal and one sports shoes. I work from home. And for jewellery, I just close my eyed and divert attention when I pass buy a jewellery stall anywhere. Because I already have what I need.

      Yes! Especially at those frighteningly low prices you see online from a certain few retailers that shall not be named! And as AI takes off and human designers are cut out of the process, there will be more and more cheap and easy and, honestly, gorgeous products that we have spent our lives wishing for, but which have never before been available. It’s both exciting and depressing. (Especially as I watch those who don’t mind supporting those business practices get all the stuff I’ve longed for for decades getting it for pennies!) That’s a tough challenge to deal with…

  • @21cormorants
    @21cormorants 2 месяца назад +18

    Several instances of moving all lumped together in the past decade or so made me want to shift towards minimalism - but the biggest thing was how stressed I now find myself getting if I lose something. It’s pushed me to be so much more intentional about storage, accessibility, visibility, and clutter that is both seen and hidden.
    I really do struggle with letting go of things though. I get annoyingly emotionally attached to objects -whether they’ve served me well, not served me enough (yet????), were a gift, were a guilty impulse purchase, unfinished projects, unread books… watching inflation go up and up, I struggle to get rid of anything because I don’t want to have to imagine repurchasing something similar if I regret it! 😢

    I have been really interested in minimalism for 7 years. But to be honest I didn't start implementing it until 4 years ago. It has taken me years to get to where I am today and I feel I will continue getting better. This was the year of decluttering my whole home. I knew with the arrival of my baby I needed to get busy. I had done certain areas but never my whole home. I am so happy I did. I already started making some short term goals and long term goals for 2025. I learned that it not done overnight process. We all have to start somewhere.

    • @HannaMicheleRoss
      @HannaMicheleRoss  Месяц назад +2

      Oh my gosh, I could not agree more. I think I mentioned in the video that it could take years to nail down a good system...and I mean it! Minimalism (in many cases) is NOT an overnight process; to me, it feels more like a skill that needs developing over time! That was certainly the case for me (it took me YEARS to figure out how to actually live minimally). I wish you the best of luck in the coming years as you move along your journey. :)

    as someone who's been trying to live low waste for a few years now, this is basically the same system i've been using as well (except you put it into actual words!)...you're very right about systems changing over time, especially since we change over time...i've had to make my clothing system more flexible in some areas as my style and preferences have changed (i've started wearing pants again after avoiding them for a long time because of sensory issues) and i felt guilty for having to buy new clothes (e.g. job interview clothing) because my system was too rigid and yet missing the essentials at the same time, so it's definitely important to allow yourself some leeway!

For me, the process will be long and I'm ok with that. I no longer bring things in my life unless it is replacing something and I have no other backups. Like you said, it's about being intentional and that really is the key takeaway. These past two years, I have spent the least amount in my life and I can't tell you how amazing it feels! Or 2) the panic that they will change something. For example, i found some shoes i really like and actually fir my feet for once, i bought 5 pairs. Or my shampoo is really vibing with my hair and im scared theyll change the formula, so i buy too many. They changed the moisturizer my face liked and i haven't been able to find anything since that doesnt cause me to break out or isnt too greasy.

    Great minds think alike 😂 l have similar schemes one daily shoe each for winter and summer, a few formal wears ( l think about ten but that is because I have three daughters and we have a general store and would wear whatever goes with the outfit) . We also have a general storage of jewellery for weddings etc .

    My problem is that I still need those specific items that fill the purpose (for example an outfit for an event that's dressed up or the perfect jeans) and I am ordering clothes every 3 months (I was at a point where it was every month multiple packages lol) tho try and find those perfect items to fill my gaps (also like really warm winter boots, fall boots, event shoes etc.) but I'm never really happy with what I've ordered so I always end up sending everything back and have the feeling of stress to finally fill those gaps and be done with constantly searching for them😮‍💨 I'm even considering getting a personal stylist so she can go find those items for me because it takes up so much of my time and stress. Any tips for me, anyone?

      @HannaMicheleRoss  23 дня назад

      Hi! A personal stylist is a great option if you feel like that service would be of good value to you. I also have a video about my minimalist wardrobe if you're curious (certainly not for everyone, but just wanted to let you know in case it's of interest to you!). My biggest tip would be to actually physically go into stores to shop if that's a possibility for you. I almost always return when I buy online too, so I opt for shopping in stores (mostly) now!

      Probably not! I don't find that's an area my family is minimal in (nor card or board games).

    In recent times I bought alot of korean skincare. Then suddenly I started to really disagree with using these types of products and I wanted more natural products. I want to throw all the stuff away (it gives me break outs) but I feel so bad about wasting money and recources. What to do?? Anyone got tips?

    • @HannaMicheleRoss
      @HannaMicheleRoss  2 месяца назад

      So I am no expert at all...but this is what I would do. Firstly, I would try to isolate what was actually causing my skin harm (breaking me out). Once I found out the culprit(s), I would likely use up the parts of the skincare routine that were okay for me (unless you really feel called towards natural products who I totally understand!); for the rest, if it was possible to properly sanitize them, I would offer them to friends and family who seem genuinely interested in those products (but I would of course let them know of your not ideal experience with them). If no one wanted them, I would dispose of the products that you weren't reacting well to. After they were used up, I would move on to natural skincare products (like you mentioned wanting!).
      Again, I am by no means a professional or expert or anything, so please take this all with a big old pinch of salt!
