    Willys (/ˈwɪlɪs/)[1] was a brand name used by Willys-Overland Motors, an American automobile company best known for its design and production of military Jeeps (MBs) and civilian versions (CJs) during the 20th century.
    In 1908, John Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company and in 1912 renamed it Willys-Overland Motor Company. From 1912 to 1918, Willys was the second-largest producer of automobiles in the United States after Ford Motor Company.
    In 1913, Willys acquired a license to build the Charles Knight's sleeve-valve engine which it used in cars bearing the Willys-Knight nameplate. In the mid-1920s, Willys also acquired the F.B. Stearns Company of Cleveland and assumed continued production of the Stearns-Knight luxury car, as well.
    John Willys acquired the Electric Auto-Lite Company in 1914 and in 1917 formed the Willys Corporation to act as his holding company. In 1916, it acquired the Russell Motor Car Company of Toronto, Ontario, by 1917, New Process Gear, and in 1919 acquired the Duesenberg Motors Company plant in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The New Jersey plant was replaced by a new, larger facility in Indianapolis, and was to be the site of production for a new Willys Six at an adjacent site, but the depression of 1920-21 brought the Willys Corporation to its knees. The bankers hired Walter P. Chrysler to sort out the mess and the first model to go was the Willys Six, deemed an engineering disaster. Chrysler had three auto engineers: Owen Skelton, Carl Breer, and Fred Zeder (later nicknamed The Three Musketeers) begin work on a new car, commonly referred to as the Chrysler Six.[2]
    To raise cash needed to pay off debts, many of the Willys Corporation assets were put on the auction block. The Elizabeth plant and the Chrysler Six prototype were sold to William C. Durant, then in the process of building a new, third empire.[3] The plant built Durant's low-priced Star, while the Chrysler Six prototype was substantially reworked to become the 1923 Flint.[3]
    Walter Chrysler and the three engineers who had been working on the Chrysler Six all moved on to Maxwell-Chalmers where they continued their work, ultimately launching the six-cylinder Chrysler in January 1924.[4] (In 1925, the Maxwell car company became the Chrysler Corporation.)
    The 1933-36 coupés and pickups were very popular gassers.[33] The best-known would be the 1933 Willys 77.[34] Only 12,800 were sold in 1933, 13,234 in 1934, 10,644 in 1935 (including a new panel delivery), and 30,825 the company's final year, making it a puzzle why it became popular: it was neither cheap nor plentiful.[35]
    After the company revived, the 1937-42 coupés, sedans, and pickups were again popular with hot rodders and gasser teams, and again, comparatively low production leaves unexplained why they gained so much attention.[36] Ollie Olsen's Wil-A-Meaner 1940 coupé (driven by Bob "Rapid" Dwyer) won the 1961 NHRA Nationals A/G title.

    i built this kit when it came with the coupe and pickup body. I used the coupe. Fun kit, I was able to get a blue ribbon at the state fair for the effort(this was many years ago!) I also put slightly raised metal hinges on the hood, I thought it looked better. Mine was/is also painted red. Thanks again!

    I built this kit back in the late 60's as a four wheel drive tow truck. Used the chassis from a Chevy Blazer and the tow system from the '34 Ford pick up. I made a lot of the cars that are being re-issued today, but none came out as nice as these. This guy is amazing. Great skills and he "get's it" when it comes to cars!

    Chris,
    I've enjoyed watching your builds and reviews for quite a while now. You do a great job with letting us know what is in the kit and what to look for. I also appreciate how you keep your comments about a less than stellar kit positive. So many people want to focus on the downfalls of the kit. Thanks for all you do to keep us informed and entertained.

      Thanks Tom! I'll let the other wallow in angry posts and getting upset about flash or a hood crease line that isn't perfect scale. I just want to build models and have fun.

      @@hpiguy I agree completely.
      I was watching your build of the Revell 57 Gasser with interest. I am building the 57 Wagon Gasser kit as a stock wagon. I am trying to scratchbuild a roof rack for it and I am planning on using five of the outside mirror bases (cutting off the mirror faces) as the mounting brackets for the rack. I am in need of two more mirrors. You wouldn't happen to have a couple in your spares box to part with? I'd pay for them, including shipping. Got three so far but still need two. Thanks in advance and keep up the fine channel.

    I built that kit way back in the early 70's and if I remember correctly it was issued as a double kit at one time. I believe the blown engine is an Olds or Caddy. I still have one of the issues unbuilt in a pristine box. My kit is a reissue from the 90's. I remember this kit was rare as not too many reissues were popped and the original kits were going for big bucks on eBay. Another fine intuitive build.

      Strawberry Fields, looks like a great color for my 40 Ford kit. I'll have to purchase a can. I have tons of Tamiya, Model Master, Testors Lacquer, House of Color in both spray cans and the bottles I use for my airbrush but I always like a new color that is a little different. I think some of my older paint is no longer good, some of the cans won't spray but believe it or not some work great after you put the can in warm water for a while then shake it up like Elvis for about an hour and they spray like new and look like new after dry. That's the old Pactra, Testors and some old AMT spray cans. I actually had a newer can of Testors Lacquer blow out the bottom of the can just sitting on the shelf, made a stinky mess and sprayed paint all over. I called Testors and they never heard of that problem but they compensated me with a whole case of Testors Lacquer but it was all one color, Maroon. Thank you Testors!

    Another great build Chris! I love how you make so many of your builds realistic for what people would really do with these cars in real life instead of making them all pristine perfect exactly like the cover on the box. Also, I just have to say I've watched a couple of videos from other modelers and they do not come close to your videos. You really do a great job of thoroughly showing and explaining your build process, and your thoughts behind all your decisions.

    Chris another Trick with Super Glue is that Acetone/ Fingernsil polish Remover acts as a Debonder... Hence A Q-Tip dipped in it as a guided applicator helps put it to soak only where you Super Glued it

      The issue with that is that straight acetone will easily melt the styrene models are made of. I recommend against it, but if you've had luck, go for it.

    After decades, i am just getting back into building models and customizing diecast.
    Before I start, I have been doing alot of research on air brush kits and all of the equipment before I buy everything.
    I will have to order everything on line due to living on Maui. There is almost nothing to find here for what I need.
    I saw this exact kit and snatched it right up along with a half dozen or so others.
    I will probably do 1 or 2 other ones before partaking in the building of the willy's gasser.

    I had a 40 Willy's prostreet pickup with a 406cid and about 750hp. This is a must for me to do. Wish I still had the truck. I sold it about 7 years ago

    I had one of those kits way back when, Mine came with the willys coupe body and the pickup truck body. You could build it either way, if you didn't cut off the scribed area you would use the coupe body. This video makes me want to get another! 🤔

    I love your work. I'm REALLY not into weathered vehicles. But the more I see you do it, the more I'm like: Heh. Maybe I'll do one, one day. Maybe a cadaver (of a kit of course!) bought at a show for cheap with a couple of parts missing would be a good wheaterer.

    I pose a question to you, I see you use the 2x coverage paint a lot, how do you keep from spraying too much?? I try to paint hot wheels and I end up with too much paint... should I do more light coats? Or just clear coat it?

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 года назад

      Light touch on the nozzle and fast swipes over the model.
      Matchbox stuff is way smaller so paint will build up very fast.

    I've always thought that Willys was pronounced "will-ees". Mainly because my grandfather worked for them and everyone in my family has pronounced it that way when talking about them.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  4 года назад

      Yeah, both are acceptable.
      People that worked with the man say he pronounced his name 'willis' so that's just what I use. No biggie.

      You're correct, Chris. His most famous quote was "I don't care how they pronounce my name as long as they buy my car!"

    • @matthewharroun8618
      @matthewharroun8618 4 года назад

      Ah, OK. The first time I heard you say it on an older video, I thought, "That's gotta be wrong!" Then I posed the question of what was right and did some research. Honestly though, "Willis" still sounds wrong to me, but whatever, right?

    I’m way late to the party and up late so I’m going to say I found a kit a while back that’s was a 2 in 1 kit it didn’t let you build it stock but you could build a car or truck I built the car and had to scavenge parts to build the truck this kit appears to be the same but without the car body all the parts besides the rear glass is compatible which is why I had to find all the parts to build the truck I had a hard time finding another front clip that was the right scale and I used a Chrysler 392 Hemi from a 1953 studebaker kit and made my own high rise intake for it I hope whoever takes the time to read my story here enjoys it

    Ive tries using the rustoleum spray paints as you do... However, they stay tacky for 3-5 days after spraying with or without primer.What am I doing wrong?

    • @hpiguy

      It's impossible to say but the two most common issues are too thick of a coat laid down or too humid, or both.
