I am about to build this kit. I'm going to delete the dump box and make this a scrap metal hauler! I love fabricating new parts. Auto car was a bad ass truck. I want to make mine on the edge, something more masculine, something that says, look how strong I am! I'm an auto car, not some Detroit wana be!!!! Wish I could show you pics when I'm done. I was a welder all my life, I have built many real trucks. Now I build from memory. This one will be fun!
*Nostalgia* I built this kit decades ago and this brings back memories. In building mine I omitted the sides of the hood assembly as was frequently seen "back in the day". I also hinged the hood top with *many* brass hinges to look like a "piano hinge". I also utilized the "extra pieces" to turbocharge and aftercool the engine.
Just picked this kit up along with the Tyrone Malone hideout KW. Used the engine and trans from the dump truck in the kw as I'm building it as the truck from the tv show BJ and the bear. Therefore, gonna use the V8 Detroit from the hauler in the dump truck. Love the videos...and I am grateful that someone is reproducing these old kits again.
I just got my first order in from model round up. Simple amazing job on the packaging. Cardboard in between each kit and each kit wrapped in newspaper. They definitely have a new customer. Thanks for putting this store out there Chris!!
I'm a dump truck driver, I really enjoyed watching this video. I just discovered you today, I will continue watching your videos thanks for posting this
Nice! I just picked up this mean dirt hauler yesterday from Hobby Lobby for 40% off. I was very fortunate to get the last one they had. I had this kit back in the 70's when it first came out. I got it from a friend in a trade and he had already assembled it, so this is actually my first time building it. Great job, Chris! Thanks for the great tips. Those will come in handy for my build.
Man! I remeber when I was little, I hauled many a load of dirt and gravel in my Tonka truck. Lol! Brings back memories. When I get mine built I may have to haul some more. 😂
Absolutely stunning and realistic build Chris!!! Yous weathering tips are excellent, and viewing channel is such a joy, thanks for all that you doing to promote our hobby!!
Can't believe I hadn't seen this build, then just the day after, a dump truck passed Me for real, Hell Man, You know Your stuff!, I was looking at all the weathering on it and for one minute thought it WAS one of Your kits!, keep this 'Art' coming, thanks, great job, Greetings from England 👍
I'm subscribed to your channel, I like your videos. I wish I knew people to recommend them to but all my friends are dead. Happens when your old. I've built models for 60 years. My Grandma would give me 5 bucks on my birthday and I would buy a model and paint. You could buy an AMT model back then for 2.00 bucks, throw in a couple of bottles of paint and glue and I was good to go!!!!! They are some of my best memories!!! I still build models, not as fast as I once did. But i have to say much better than I ever did. You are lucky to be able to do what you love. when you do what you love you never work a day in your life. My hat is off to you. May you never work a day in your life!!!!!!!!
I don’t remember who said this but a good model quote it is. “Don’t go too light but don’t go too far. When we paint models we want them to tell a story” You did an AMAZING job letting this model tell it’s own story!
Perfect weathering job Chris. My father own and operated a heavy construction company, so I grew up around all of that kind of stuff. So yeah right on the money with that. You did say it would be big and it sure is!
Awesome build! I just got this kit FINALLY! Finished it about an hour ago. Didn't use the hood panels, and just an observation, the dash tops on almost all these older trucks, regardless of make, were black. The faces were wood grain body color etc.,but the dash tops were black. I love this kit,the cab mounts are a pain in the butt, otherwise,no real issues. Thanks Guy.
Great build and video. One thing that has changed since the model was first released is the hinged hood. On early editions the hood was hinged in the metal so that the side panels of the hood go up to expose the engine. Nice touch. Your weathering was spot on. The thing I did in the dump box was to heat a small metal rod and made small and larger dents on the inside where different size of gravel or rocks would dent the metal over time. I had to restrain myself by not making too many.
Fantastic job on a truck which looks like it has the same number of parts as a real truck. I love the explanations and guidance during the sub assembly steps. I think if I built the model, using bass wood for the top of the box and then staining and dirtying it up would give it a more authentic look. EVERYONE does things THEIR way, and that is why watching your vids is awesome! I also love the fact you use Rustoleum. Man, Rustoleum should be a sponsor! Look forward to the next one!
Nice build. I like all of the tips you offer. I appreciate the fact that you understand not all of us are expert modelers. Thanks for everything my friend
It's funny my middle name is Chuck lol btw my dad had his own dump truck business before he got sick with cancer and passed on but what an fantastic job!!!
I only build truck kits got a Volvo F10 on the go at the minute , ad this build has inspired me to have a go at weathering my next build awesome work as always Chris
Great job, this is my all time favorite truck, when I lived in Pennsylvania, I had a stone hauling company and had 7 of these and 2 of the DK cab autocars, you did this kit justice my friend, fantastic build and paint.
Out of your builds I've watched so far, I do believe this is the one I like the best so far. Looks excellent. Love the background stories you come up with.
Much as with Ertl’s International Payhauler 350 Detroit Diesel Dump Truck kit, and AMT’s Caterpillar D8H Construction Bulldozer kit, I had built this one, too. The front left fender of the cab had an odd bend to it, so I just dry-brushed a bit of steel and hints of rusting over the painted part to suggest the consequence of a modest collision. I also had used Testor’s little, ¼-oz. bottle of generic medium brown enamel paint mixed with bits of baby powder to simulate thick clumps of fresh mud upon the tyres. Ertl round that time also had released a kit of a dump trailer (Tri-Axle Gravel Trailer 1:25th-scale Model Kit (AMT 8628), one of which I had bought, that one could connect to the rear of a dump truck, complete with a fifth wheel arrangement that the tractor would pull.
The fact that it's a heated dump lends to it being an asphalt or hot-patch truck. I think it would look good with a glossy brown-black gunk look in the bed. Another way to get a good weathered work truck look is to paint it with flat paint and then buff it with a piece of old T-shirt until you get a semi-gloss finish. The low areas will still be flat but the broad surfaces will be semi-gloss like they're getting polished by work.
I know this vids been up for a while... But starting to somehow look at rigs (trucks) .. Passed by this vid a few to look at your cars... What a MIStake.!! This one and your work is out rageous.!! Nice and real looking .. Motivated now in a different light..
awesome build! love the dry brushing. another way i like making it look used is by heating and bending the corners of fenders and maybe bending th steps in the middle or coner of the back gate to look like it been put to use
Simply Unreal how great you put that puppy together...ordering mine on Amazon now...will totally follow your great video...thank you so much for sharing!
That turned out sooo amazing!!! It looks so believable like a 1:1 ... Keep up the good work that you do for the model car industry my friend... GOD Bless Ya !!!!
Great kit, great build, and fantastic detailing HPI Guy!! One more great detail would be some exhaust soot airbrushed onto the side of the box. I gotta have one of these kits!!
You have NAILED IT, sir - oops, I think I just got a rock chip on my monitor. My bad, I was looking too close. Realistic? Totally. What a joy to view - Thank you so much for sharing...
In my lifetime I've loaded 100s of thousands of trucks and you know your stuff. You should have a lunchbox and hardhat inside of the cab. Great job, also the mud flaps like to ride on the tires sometimes, you could groove them a little when you fix them.
I remember this kit back in 1988 when I was 13, never did purchase it, I bought instead Mack R600 kit that just came out, also did the Mack DM600 kit too.
That is an excellent build Chris! Love the weathering and other details. I recently finished up an Italeri Freightliner dump truck and now I need to grab this one.
My Dad when he was my age he got the trailer and dolly for that truck and he gave it to me for Christmas as a gift from him and I’m 13 so that was a long time ago
First let me say thanks for your great videos. They are very inspiring. I came across your Atlantis B-25 build and review few days ago. I have the Revell 1995 reissue of that kit and I am now inspired to build it to display at my office. I built that kit in the mid-60's as a kid, thinking it was very detailed for the time. I have been looking at some of your other builds and have an observationa regarding the Autocar A64B Semi Tractor and Autocar DC9964B Dump Truck builds. I know you said you are not a truck expert, but I thought I would share this. I acquired the dump truck on eBay early in 2017. It appears to be an early issue as the decal sheet is not as nice as your. I got it to a point were I needed to paint the frame and engine and could not decide on colors and weathering. I was attempting to make a "newer" truck that mirrored the new dump trucks purchased by my employer. We purchased 2017 Peterbuilt Super 16 dump trucks. The first truck in our fleet in 1985 were Autocar Mixers. In both builds, you painted the Cummings diesel engine a tan base color and with lots of weathering. I have observed in our shop, that Cummings diesel engine blocks are bright red and do show extreme weathering. In fact when invoiced for an engine rebuild done at Cummings, we are charged for red spray paint for touch-up. I thought you might like to know. One other comment. The amber running lights on the top of the cab are called "Chicken Lights". There is debate on the internet about why, but I think it is because they look like the skin bumps on roosters. Thank you again for your videos. They have inspired me to resume working on the dump truck model. I hope to have it done by the time I retire at the end of 2021. I want to present it to my boss with company logos and his name on the door as "Boss" and our shop manager as "Crew Chief" like military planes of old. And his truck number will be "00". Double Naughts (nuts) as "CAG". PS. I live in Texas, but my parents were from Stevens Point and I still have relatives in the Milwaukee area.
I hear that Chuck is still at it, eh....you just can't get staff nowadays! I can just see you on the floor with this one.....😉😆😂 Beautiful and great video, as always! 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻
great job! glad you didn't do the "extreme" driven into the ground version! I was able to build one of the original kits back in the "70's and I did it as a dealer delivered new unit. still have it by the way! the loops on the front bumper reminded me of the ones that were on my dad's '52 F-8 Ford- he bought it used and the fog lights had been removed so people used to ask what they were for. dad would tell them he'd tie gunny sacks behind them and go snipe hunting at midnight with them! oh,the "tank thats on the left side of the cabin front of the door is a luberfiner-an add on item developed in California to extend the life of the engine oil! its no longer used and some owners have converted it to a power steering cooler! by the way I retired last year after doing mechanic work for a Ford/Kenworth dealer after 40 yrs.
Thats another solid 10 once again! Guy you have a great mind thinking of what colors to roll with and how you build. In my 33 years of building you have me leading towards decaning Rustelom cans.
I rarely use my airbrushes, only if I need to mix a custom color. It's a myth that you 'need' an airbrush to make great models that look real and have fun doing it. I prove it twice a week, every week. I build anything, but very few battleships, lots of sailing ships though.
I think I've only ever tried to build 2 big rig kits.....and probably only completed 1......back in the 1960s, when I was a kid. Then I got into aircraft. Always tempted to buy another big rig though. This one looks pretty good.
Man you outdid yerself on this one...i actually grew up around these type of trucks. My friends i grew across street from...on our street ther dad owned tom dwyer&sons trucking. He had abt 25 of these giant dump trucks. Flat trailer that hauled a d9 cat too. I grew up around very old autocars...diamond reo's an diamond T's, macks, whites, kenworths&peterbilts. All from 50s to 70s. Bunch of old 60s or early 70s fords too. Few internationals. They used too bust split rims with no cages....it was a cool place to grow up and no doubt played a part in moulding my gear head personality. I need several of these and see if i can figuer out how to recreate ther old company door logo.great job though!!!
Nice kit! I seriously have to build one when I have more space. I love the segments where you detail your weathering techniques too. Very helpful! I like to glean ideas that are useful! I have to use this idea on a future build. Thanks again for what you do..so keep doin it! lol
It looks incredible. Love the old Autocars
that damn chuck on first shift, always screwing up. beautiful build, and your sense of humor and enthusiasm is always appreciated
Thanks George!
I am about to build this kit. I'm going to delete the dump box and make this a scrap metal hauler! I love fabricating new parts. Auto car was a bad ass truck. This truck reminds me of Die Hard 3 when take gold bullion from the bank & that scene is awesome. Great work.
"Chester A Arthur!" Thanks!
Those were autocar dump trucks
I was thinking the exact same thing.
And a bunch of quarters too! Loved that movie.
I drove a truck like this when I first started driving in 1977.Also an excellent finished job.
Thanks!
Just picked this kit up along with the Tyrone Malone hideout KW. Used the engine and trans from the dump truck in the kw as I'm building it as the truck from the tv show BJ and the bear. Therefore, gonna use the V8 Detroit from the hauler in the dump truck.

Thanks a lot Ron!
Looks just like the dump trucks I see working on the highways around here. Looks really great- Thanks.
Thank you!
Love the build Chris! I can't build any thang right now but it sure is a blast watching you build your models. Thanks for sharing your skills with us.
I love your storyline for each of your models. It gives them a unique personality and any if there are any mistakes, blame the driver.
Thanks Charles!
Thanks man!
This is some nice work. There’s nothing like a good dump!
It's always Dave on day shift screwing something up with the trucks. Surprised he still has a job. Great build by the way.
Always! Darn it Dave! This is why we can't have nice things!
I built that same truck and mine is green cab and box, turned out really nice, built it in the early 80’s. It’s been packed away for many years now.
I'm subscribed to your channel, I like your videos. I wish I knew people to recommend them to but all my friends are dead. Happens when your old. I've built models for 60 years. Thanks Donald!
From all of your models, this one is my very favorite. It's a candy on 10 wheels.
Thanks!
Just ordered one! Haven't build a semi truck in 35 years, I'll likely watch this build for further tips. Fine build, stay warm!
Enjoy!
I don’t remember who said this but a good model quote it is.

Thanks for the tips on wear and naturalizing 😉👍
I work for a construction company and you have nailed it on the dirt and grime for that dump truck, keep up the good work.
Thanks!

Sparkling commentary and well built dump.

Great job, this is my all time favorite truck, when I lived in Pennsylvania, I had a stone hauling company and had 7 of these and 2 of the DK cab autocars, you did this kit justice my friend, fantastic build and paint.
Thanks, cool info!
Love this. Your weathering is spot on. I like doing weathering but it’s so hard to “hold back” and not do too much......
Thanks Derick. Yeah, and the good thing with the craft paints is they will wipe off if we go too far with it.
Out of your builds I've watched so far, I do believe this is the one I like the best so far. Looks excellent. Love the background stories you come up with.
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Everyone, who can stop watching the kit build for simply several ways he builds!
Thanks dude!
Ertl round that time also had released a kit of a dump trailer (Tri-Axle Gravel Trailer 1:25th-scale Model Kit (AMT 8628), one of which I had bought, that one could connect to the rear of a dump truck, complete with a fifth wheel arrangement that the tractor would pull.
nice build of the truck and just the right amount of weathering
Thank you Craig!
Dude that looks amazing! The way you dirtied it up looks very cool! Once again great job
Thanks Tim!
That’s really nice it has the autocar suspension and top feed rear ends looks like a 250,270,290 Cummins very nice
Thanks!
Excellent build there mate, it's good to see some of the older vehicles being built.
Thanks you Les!
Swinging mudflaps - what detail !
I know this vids been up for a while... But starting to somehow look at rigs (trucks) .. Passed by this vid a few to look at your cars... What a MIStake.!! This one and your work is out rageous.!! Nice and real looking .. Motivated now in a different light..
Cool, thanks!
Fantastic kit, truck and your work.....congratulations
Thank you very much!
Outstanding job! I drive a TT for a living and can really appreciate the dirty work look. Keep up the great work!
Thanks dude!
great video and discussion. Again - great pointers on the paints and shadows and highlighting. Looks like you had fun too
Thanks James, it's always a good day modeling.
awesome build! love the dry brushing. another way i like making it look used is by heating and bending the corners of fenders and maybe bending th steps in the middle or coner of the back gate to look like it been put to use
Cool, thanks!
Simply Unreal how great you put that puppy together...ordering mine on Amazon now...will totally follow your great video...thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks Richard!
That turned out sooo amazing!!!
It looks so believable like a 1:1 ...
Keep up the good work that you do for

Great kit, great build, and fantastic detailing HPI Guy!! One more great detail would be some exhaust soot airbrushed onto the side of the box. I gotta have one of these kits!!
Thanks man!
You have NAILED IT, sir - oops, I think I just got a rock chip on my monitor. My bad, I was looking too close. Realistic? Totally. What a joy to view -

What a beautiful beast of a truck. Can’t wait to get my hands on one. I love big rigs. So much detail. So fun to build.
Thanks Rich!
In my lifetime I've loaded 100s of thousands of trucks and you know your stuff. You should have a lunchbox and hardhat inside of the cab. Great job, also the mud flaps like to ride on the tires sometimes, you could groove them a little when you fix them.

Awesome 👍U can build a scratch built Roll up tarp for those to with Styrene an baby wipes for more realistic look
Thanks, yes that could be done.
Every part tells a story. Awesome build, Brutha!
Thanks!
I remember this kit back in 1988 when I was 13, never did purchase it, I bought instead Mack R600 kit that just came out, also did the Mack DM600 kit too.
Thank you, and thanks for watching the video and leaving a nice comment! Much appreciated!
One hell of a cool build Chris, for a 1/25 scale that's a big truck.👍
Thank you John!
That is an excellent build Chris! Love the weathering and other details. I recently finished up an Italeri Freightliner dump truck and now I need to grab this one.
Thanks a lot!
Gorgeously dirty! Fantastic build!!
Thanks Jim!
Nice build. Thank goodness you're not a perfectionist. Broke a piece. Left it! I love it.

Big and beautiful.
Thank you!
I would never think of building a dump truck but now after watching this vid I’m going to add a few to tha collection thanks Hpiguys
The big trucks are a nice change up if you want to stick with vehicles but do something new.
hpiguys Workshop no doubt keep those vids rollin brother
Fantastic weathering! Great build!
Thanks a lot!
My Dad when he was my age he got the trailer and dolly for that truck and he gave it to me for Christmas as a gift from him and I’m 13 so that was a long time ago
Thanks man, and thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching man!
I hear that Chuck is still at it, eh....you just can't get staff nowadays!
I can just see you on the floor with this one.....😉😆😂

You're most welcome guv'nor!
Had a AMT Kenworth W900 and a Peterbilt 359 delivered this week, so my big rig stash is growing as well....
Excellent review. I have now bought this kit and look forward to making it.
We all have our Chucks, LOL. I'm leaning toward this being my favorite build by you
Fantastic detail and the color choice was awesome
Thanks a lot Joe!

Thats one awesome build. Love how it turned out. I buildt the tractor, and now i have to get me the dump truck.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks Tom!
Great video on the build. And a really nice, weathered truck model.
Thanks William!
Thats another solid 10 once again! Guy you have a great mind thinking of what colors to roll with and how you build. In my 33 years of building you have me leading towards decaning Rustelom cans.
Thanks Jeremy!
Very nice always like how they look like 1:1scale
Thank you Ralph!
What a great build, like it weathered and used, nicely done my friend
Thanks a lot!
I wish I knew how to use a air brush .... that’s the trick to making models coming to LIFE . Do you do battle ships ???
I rarely use my airbrushes, only if I need to mix a custom color.
It's a myth that you 'need' an airbrush to make great models that look real and have fun doing it. I prove it twice a week, every week.
I build anything, but very few battleships, lots of sailing ships though.
Amazing how fast you built that Chris. It looks fantastic!
Three days, surprised myself too! Thanks!
I think I've only ever tried to build 2 big rig kits.....and probably only completed 1......back in the 1960s, when I was a kid. Then I got into aircraft. Always tempted to buy another big rig though. This one looks pretty good.
I’m about to build this kit,but I’m gonna get there Mack r model semi and use the cab off it,cause my grandpal drove a Mack dump truck so I can’t wait
Thanks Adam!
Another knockout build from you mate, love it !
Thanks a lot Gary!

Thnaks Mike!
Nice kit! I seriously have to build one when I have more space. I love the segments where you detail your weathering techniques too. Very helpful! I like to glean ideas that are useful! I have to use this idea on a future build. Thanks again for what you do..so keep doin it! lol
