    With the demise of the S2000, NSX, and Prelude, the 2013 Civic Si stands as one of the last fun to drive vehicles in Honda's current line-up. While its turbocharged competition may sound better on paper, drops of that old "Honda magic" can still be found throughout this vehicle earning it a top spot in its segment. If you are in the market for a well rounded sport compact to serve as your daily driver, this vehicle should be at the top of your list.

    I don't see any other manufacturers making over 200 horsepower with a naturally aspirated 2.4 liter engine. Honda has been doing this since the 90's. Give credit where credit is due. Guarantee that if you remove the turbos from all of the competition those cars wouldn't come anywhere near 200 horses.

      I agree I mean 201 HP from 2.4L is just impressive. Honda has done that for years. I mean even the 2.0L K20 motor from the S2000 for example, that made 240 HP from only 2.0L which is 120 HP/L. I don’t see anyone else doing that, and the engines are all N/A which is an even greater feat.

    I have a 2012 Si and I absolutely love it. I checked out the GTI, Speed3 and WRX and only the Si fit the budget and feel perfectly. There is definite sporty high end rev with this model that some of the others don't have. In my opinion only the WRX made me waver in my purchase choice, but I like the svelte subdued effect of the Si that the WRX most definitely doesn't have. Great video review by the way.

    Its nice to have an option to get an NA car in the market of turbo chargers, for me as a medical student - reliability is the most important factory and with an Si this is the best choice, not to mention the awesome resale value.
    If you are a professional student or keep cars for more than the warranty period, get the Si - it will save you the headache of turbo charged cars and you will get most of your money back when you are ready to upgrade.
    From personal experience; I have a friend with a 2009 GTi DSG - he currently has 94k miles on it and he already had to replace the turbo on it, the Dual clutch gearbox requires expensive fluid flushes (At least in the VW) every 30k miles (around $500 at the dealership),
    With the civic si, all you need are oil changes & a transmission fluid flush every 50k miles (which is dirt cheap compared to the GTi)
    If you get a sedan Si you will also have the dirt cheap insurance for it aswell..

    • @123linable
      @123linable 9 лет назад

      Are the insurance rates cheap for this car?

    • @DrHistoryV
      @DrHistoryV 9 лет назад +3

      insurance really depends on so many factors like age, location, driving record, credit score etc etc.
      but overall a sedan civic Si is very cheap to insure, for example mine is about $120 a month for full coverage and a low deductible.

    As much as I have always been a bmw fan my whole life I really enjoyed this review! Sure the si isn't the fastest car out there, but there's something about the si that one is drawn to. It clearly shows honda's racing roots and a honda engine is built to last and the sound of v-tec is music to my ears. A great daily driver car.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    Depending on how you equip your GTI it will be either a little or a lot more expensive than the Si. However, you will still notice the GTI is quicker, quieter, more luxurious, and more comfortable. The Si is louder, lighter, more fun around corners, and will have the superior resale and reliability over the VW. It's really up to you, if you want that more grown up, premium look and feel, go with the GTI, if you want more of a boy racer look with a screaming engine, go with the Si.

    Although the Si may not be turbocharged, acceleration wise it can keep up surprisingly well with the GTI and price wise it falls right in line with the turbo competition. The Forte and tC are less expensive and cannot keep up power wise.

  • @theredline

    You just listed most of the reasons why the Si is still a great choice in the segment. Sure, performance wise, the Si cannot compete with the Focus ST and Speed3 but that doesn't mean the Si isn't fun to drive in its own way. Most buyers find the handling to be sharp, combine it with the high revving engine and quick shifting 6 speed; you have a vehicle that will still put a smile on your face. Match it with Honda dependability and value and you have the reason why the Si sells pretty well.

  • @theredline

    That's what we were thinking. While the 4 cyl LX-S Accord coupe does come very close to the price of a base Si, the Accord simply has a different mission. You need to decide which is more important for you: a comfortable, sporty looking daily driver, or a quick and high strung corner carver with a louder exhaust note. The Accord is def the more mature car but it won't be as fun as the Si to drive. It's really up to you, take both for a drive and then you should be able to make a decision.

    You have to remember not everyone thinks the way you do. Sure the speed3 has way more power, but for some people it's too much. The Mazda is also 300 lbs heavier than the Si, so it needs more power. The Si has it's advantages in ride quality, fuel economy, and value while some people may dislike the styling of the Mazda compared to the cleaner appearance of the Honda. Both vehicle have their advantages, and in the end it comes down to your personal preference and needs.

    It may be under-powered in terms of the numbers, but the lighter weight of the Si allows it to keep pace and be even quicker than some competitors. 0-60 in 6.1 secs according to most test, place it just behind a Speed3 and ST which do the same sprint in 5.8-5.9 secs.

    Everyone is different. You may think the WRX has a soft ride but others may say it's harsh. For you, the backseat can fit 3 people, someone else will say it's far too cramped. You may think the MPG is good, someone else may say its a gas guzzler. Everyone has different taste and needs, if you like your WRX, that is great. We simply state that for the majority of buyers, most will find the Si to be roomier, have more tech, get better MPG, and have a softer ride.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    Where are you getting $2,000 more? The cheapest Accord V6 coupe is priced at $31,140 without NAVI. The Si is priced almost $8,000 less than the Accord V6 coupe.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    You're comparing the price of this Si which has the optional $1500 Navigation package with a base MS3. You need to add the Tech package to the Mazda and that pushes the price up by $2500 to $27,500.

    you cannot compare the weight of a vehicle built from the early 90's to today. Safety regulations and tech features have forced all vehicles to be much heavier.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    True, the Civic Si still lacks torque vs more powerful rivals. But again, at 2900 lbs it's 200-300 lbs lighter than a GTI, Speed3, and Focus ST

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    The 1.8 B18 motor never made 200 hp at least not in the U.S. The most it made came from the Intergra Type R at 195 hp. Impressive for sure but the old B18 motor had little torque and required high revs to get any power. While we do understand the appeal of high revs, this new 2.4L still supplies that high revving character while also giving you torque down low so the power is much more usable everyday.

    The rear view camera will show up in the 5 inch i-MID display when you get a model without NAVI. Choosing between these two model will be tough. Both have strengths and weaknesses based on what is important to you. Both are priced roughly the same with the Accord Sport being a bit more. Tech features are pretty close, since all the really good tech is saved for the EX and above Accords. The Civic will be more fun to drive and quicker, plus easier to park but the Accord will be more comfortable.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    The GTI you are describing is not the same price as this. A fully loaded Autobahn model cost about $30,000 or $5,000 more than this Civic Si. While we agree, we want those premium features, not everyone does and it's why the Civic Si still sells so well.

  • @theredline
    @theredline  11 лет назад

    In terms of road noise, the GTI is still the quietest. However, compared to the 2012 you drove, this 13 model is a bit quieter, you will hear more of that lovely exhaust noise more over the road noise. Is it improved enough? That's really up for you to decide, drive the new model when you get the chance :)

    While they do compete price wise, the fact that they are RWD gives the vehicle a different feel. Which is not a bad thing and we don't blame people for cross shopping however, some buyers don't want RWD which is why we stick with the FWD competition.

    That Acura TSX 2.4L DOHC VTEC 4 cylinder is a fantastic sounding engine. Typical Honda, with that free revving nature and amazing VTEC sound.

    Probably not the Si model as it could get the teen in trouble with the law, but the regular Civic is always a great first car

    Hill assist just keeps the vehicle from rolling back on a steep hill. We like it simply because it helps drivers who aren't as good driving a stick, especially if it's your car they are driving ;)

    I'm from the old school, the technique for engaging the clutch on steep hills is to use the e-brake, is tricky but it works, i never even knew there was a a" hill holding clutch".

    Dude, something's wrong here. I don't mean to argue or call BS on your statement but I'm 6'3 and just purchased the 2013 sedan Si two weeks ago and my head comes nowhere near touching the interior of the ceiling roof. Maybe the coupe is different but I'm actually astonished at how much head room I actually have in my Honda. BTW, I'm sure all of the skeptics can point to other cars that are faster/leaner/quicker/cheaper/what-ever... bottom line is that this car brings a smile to my face every day

      @@ya_boi_zak5927 I would totally recommend trying to get one. That seems a bit high for that many miles but I think most cars are going way high right now. If you can see if you could get one cheaper from a high volume dealership. They might mark one down because it’s a manual it idk if that trick works now🤷‍♂️

    "I used to hate Civics but only because I was judging the drivers rather than the car"
    That's too funny! I did the same thing for two decades! Last year Honda posted low finance rates. I was on my way out of town to buy a Scion XB that had manual transmission and I stopped to try a Civic just to prove to myself I was right all those years, dealer was only a few hundred yards from highway. My attitude was totally negative. I drove an LX and was impressed, then drove an Si and was hooked.

    The torque steer on the MS3 is not excessive even in stock form with the weak OEM engine mounts. I don't do launches in my car, but say I'm rolling along after shifting out from first and I put it into second, and floor the pedal. I would feel a bit of that torque steer even with both hands on the wheel, but it never once made me feel as if it was pulling out of control. My car is now stage 2, with all 3 upgraded engine mounts, and it's gotten even better.

  • @theredline

    Yes, Honda's manual transmissions all have that safety feature.

    Agree. I'm keeping my 2000 Si with 1116k miles on it, and will probably drive it until it falls apart.
    I wish Honda/Acura would come out with a no frills sports car again like a new Type R.

    Professionally done review. Starting price of the SI is only about $700 less than a '13 Accord Sport, which has 18-inch wheels, paddle shif, dual exhaust and about 10 more pounds of torque. Although the SI has a LSD and may be faster around corners, the Accord Sport seems to provide an overall better value and practicality for the money. Best package: Accord Sport and a used S2000 for the CA canyons or Rt 129 (Tail of the Dragon

    most people would distinguish the coupe from the sedan by the lack of 2 doors. Not the interior stitching.

    Same here. I went to a Honda dealership that was giving me a great offer. I test drove the new Si and fell in love. It was so easy to drive. But I then found out that they were lying to me just to get me into the dealership. Well they wasted my time and theirs as well. I got a real deal at a Mazda dealership and got myself a pre-owned Mazdaspeed 3. Hey it's better than the Si I think lol.

    What people are missing about the SI VS the WRX is(I own a 2013 WRX and had a 2002 SI), the SI is a hoot to drive because you can rev it up and use all the power it has without reaching reckless levels of speed. The WRX will destroy an SI, but the SI is so much more useable in the real world. The WRX is almost too fast! You do get more for your money with the WRX and I have no regrets purchasing mine over the SI or MS3 or a Mustang 5.0, but its easy to miss the purpose of the SI. Great car!

    I bought one about 6 weeks ago. Black sedan w/nav. I would agree with the review. However, if your expectation is to have the SI's performance compete with the GLI/GTI, ST or Speed3, you will be disappointed. That is not what this car is intended to be. This is a reliable daily driver that looks sporty and has a touch of performance. You won't be doing track days or leaving sport bikes at stop lights with this car.

    Honda isn't what it once was when it comes to quality and dependability. The SI is completely outclassed in this segment.
