How do you make a great opening number for the Oscars? Get a bunch of Broadway talent to do it.
The production number, "Moving Pictures," sung by Tony-winning Academy Awards host Neil Patrick Harris and "Into the Woods" star Anna Kendrick, was written by Academy Award-winning "Frozen" songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
The visuals edited Harris into classic films from "The Wizard of Oz" to "Star Wars" to "Into the Woods."
The middle section of the song, as sung by Jack Black, aped Stephen Sondheim's "Witch's Rap" from Into the Woods, and he warned Harris that he would be “better off polishing your Tony." Kendrick drove him off by yelling “Beat it” and flinging her Cinderella shoe at him.

Why are people hating on Neil's hosting so much? Yes the jokes weren't the best but this opening number was spectacular
It's because it's the only good thing he did that day. If you are going to be the best, you better have many things well done. Not just the opening

This opening deserved so much more attention than it got. The song, Neil's performance, and the movie visuals are all just perfect.

It’s been a few years since this opening and it’s still one of the best Oscar openings I’ve seen.
By far, most sincere, written by the people behind frozen I think.

I’m twenty-eight-year-old Japanese. The moment I watched this opening by accident, I became a fan of Neil.
Also, this made me love Oscar and movies more.
Some years have passed, and I’ve never met any opening performance that’s greater than this. I believe this is everything that movie lovers have wanted to say.
In recent years, the surroundings of the movie industry and the Oscars have changed. However, I hope movies will keep showing us what life really means,

Not only is this song entertaining and toe tap Worthy, when I first saw it I actually did find myself almost watery-eyed. It really does capture how film impacts our lives and our culture.
It's nice because even though it slated the industry it was a love poem to those watching in the audience.

VERY true. I've seen hundreds of movies whether American or foreign, but they shaped how I see films differently these days. Overall, NPH delivered a spectacular performance for this. Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and wife Kristen really outdid themselves with this musical number and Neil made it sound amazing. Throughout the remainder of the awards show, his hosting had a few laughs here and there, but not much else to say about it. The Oscar wins? So-so, but with a few great ones.

What made that opening number so fantastic--in addition to NPH's talents--was the song-writing genius of Robert Lopez and the lyric-writing genius of his wife Kristin Andersen-Lopez. Its no fluke that Robert Lopez became the youngest ever to win all 4 major entertainment awards (Emmy, Tony, Grammy, Oscar).
NPH was born to be on that stage

1:10 Music has resemblance to "Do You Want To Build A Snowman?". Recall that this song was written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, songwriters of "Frozen". You can say it was a "tribute" to the film, since this song was for the film in general.

Niel Harris is so qualified in Disney Songs
If there was a Daytime Television Awards ceremony like this one, I imagine Neil Patrick Harris doing a similar opening number, and Pinkie Pie (singing voice by Shannon Chan-Kent) prancing onto the stage singing along and performing her parlor tricks with him. Either that, or it could be Spongebob and Pinkie performing an opening number together.
