True, he had to sound half-way decent because The Voice screens contestants before they're selected to audition. We've seen some awful performances on American Idol, but that's their shtick. We've viewed some okay singing on The Voice, but never someone who is really terrible. I still wonder if they all knew from the beginning they were being punked.

I love how no one hit their buttons. Everyone who’s like “he was actually trying” has probably never actually heard him sing for real. 😂
He made it sound like someone less talented was actually trying - and that is effing hard to do. Imitating a great lack of skill/talent comically is very simple, but imitating a slight lack of skill/talent believably, that is really hard to pull off.

@@paulineodonnell3163 He picked a song that was not made for his voice. That song is very difficult, and it just did him no favors in terms of showcasing what he can do. And any time he could have turned it around, he didn't go for it.
And I'm really disappointed he didn't go for it and didn't really try. I mean yeah, singing badly but weakly takes talent. But I would have loved to see genuine evaluations from the judges more than him just walking off laughing.

I was really expecting a bit more range. The performance was ok though, I think "worst thing ever" is really not giving credit to all the real worst performers in the world.

Cynical people always tend to assume everything that goes on on TV is scripted or fake. I would just say that unless you are a Broadway fan or HIMYM fan, you wouldn't recognize NPH's voice that easily.
Because they have come across HUNDREDS of auditions where the contestants sound similar to an actor, or a singer, but they're not them. So why would they suspect it was NPH?

I wouldn't describe it as nasty, but definitely thrown off. NPH was being intentionally weird with a slightly creepy vibe. When you're not expecting it, it's hard to check your own knee jerk reaction. Since that was the kind of NPH's aim, I'm sure he found it comical.

So they turn around at the end even if no one pushed their button? In the Netherlands the contestants just walks away and the coaches stay faced the other way.

4:25 - I know it was partially a joke, but I don't think Neil was trying to SING IT the worst way possible.
I wish that he sang it obviously badly. The singing performance was really believable, as in not comical and closer to good than bad. Being bad would have been funny, and being great would have been funny in terms of blowing the judges away.
@@xoxoxoxo4483, this shows off his skill more, actually. Easy to sing obviously badly, shockingly hard to make it a believable mediocre performance on purpose. I suspect it was either to make the whole thing last longer, or because it was more of a challenge, i.e. more fun to him. Or maybe because it seemed kinder to not ridicule lack of talent.
