This is our generation's LeMond v Fignon. I'm on the Pogacar bandwagon now. What a weekend of racing in store, in the mountains of France. What a time to be alive.
I like the honest and simple answers to reporter. What can you do in 17 sec, Tadej response, "tie my shoes". What can you do in 9 sec, reporter asks, eat a croissant? Tadej, "yea, but a small one". Brilliant, classy and unassuming respectful responses.
Seems to me Jumbo are not as strong as they were last year as a team. I’m happy for Kwaitkowski though. He was one of Ineos who always worked tirelessly for the leaders but now they don’t really have any. Karma for how they treated Froome.
Organisers have absolutely nailed it in terms of the Parcours this year, I don't think there's really been any dull moments so far. GC battle has been immense between Pogacar and Vingegaard.
We are witnessing a great battle between two equally strong leaders, which is exciting! It´d be so boring if we had only one pronounced winner known from the early stages of the Tour de France!
There is a very old saying that I think perfectly sums up this period of the Tour, 'Styles make races'. Jonas and Pog have different but actually, perfectly in sync styles that make the racing incredible. 9 seconds! I mean, I am sure we are all think about 1989 and the battle between Fignon and Lemond. I seems that last years defeat made Pog go away and think about tactics much more, instead of relying on the fact he is the best cyclist in the peloton today. Jonas in a stage race is his equal, even being slightly better as a pure climber. Pog however, has the much more explosive punch and higher top end sustainable power, which makes this race so fascinating. Both are very good TT riders, so it is going to come down to tactics. Jonas will have to ride like the pure climber he is, hoping the length of the large climbs will be enough to break Pog. Pog on the other hand, need to shadow Jonas, not expend silly energy, especially on the really long climbs and just carry on doing the tactic he is doing, attacking near the summit where his ability to push enormous Watts for long enough to break the elastic of Jonas and get the gap. I didn't think last year could be beaten, but this year is shaping up to probably be the greatest TDF battle in the entire history. What a time to be a cycling fan, this generation is giving is racing we just haven't witnessed before. Also huge shout out the the other riders who we don't really talk about, but are only slower by 4,5 and 6 minutes, which over the course of 3 weeks is nothing. For them however, the question is, can they improve over the coming years to close that gap, knowing that Jonas and Pog will also be incrementally improving. Staggering to think we are getting data suggesting 7w/kg is being hit on the climbs. To put that into context for myself, I would have to ride at 575 watts. I know I am old and sh*t, but even so, 7w/kg is incredible, I think is shows how far we have come in training, nutrition, physiology, and sports science. I've watched a couple of videos where they talk about carb consumption, with riders today having almost double the hour rate of carbs compared to a generation ago.
Pogacar is a beast, a well planned stage for the UAE cutting down the gap to 9secs, it could have been less but Jonas fought hard in the end to keep track of Pogacar wheel. TDF is set up for a war now👍 Go go Pogacar 🙌
Jonas hasn't been playing this tour to his strengths. He either ran out of steam after Stage 5, or isn't feeling himself lately, because he can't keep letting a more explosive rider like Pog stay on his wheel near the end of the climb. He needs to set a fast pace from the bottom and drop him early...
All pogacar has to do is not lose time (and maybe even drop jonas) in the next 2 days and I think the tour would be set for him. Only advantage Jonas seems to have this year is on long climbs or with both kuss and van aert giving it their all.
What did uae do? They burned legs to take just 8 seconds. Probably they expected that pogacar would attacks early, but he isn't strong enough to put a minute or more on vingegaard. Despite the insignifcant gap, the only way to pog win this tour is having another epic performance on TT. Jonas is simple a best climber
Who has strong ability and good preparation will win the tour de France pogi is talented and strong jenos strong and he has a strong team one of them will win
I'm new to cycling. Can someone answer why Jonas has a lead of 9 seconds instead of 13 seconds? Because Tadej just 4 seconds ahead of Jonas after this stage? Thanks in advance.
Every stage, the first 3 riders to cross the finish line have bonus seconds. 1st - 10s 2nd - 6s 3rd - 4s Pogi was 17s behind and he gapped Jonas by 4s. Add the 4 bonus seconds and there you have it.
Can someone explain how Pog goes from 17 seconds down to only 9 seconds in one stage by coming on only 4 seconds ahead of Vingegard? Did he get 4 bonus seconds by placing 3rd?
I think tomorrow Uae needs to Attack from far with Adam Yates..so that they don t have to work (and today It was pretty clear Uae riders are struggling in climbing) and they force Jumbo to hard work and Vingegaard should be isolated before the last km of the last mountain to climb
YES! Let's be honest here: massive respect to Kwiatkowski. However, pretty sure most people have been waiting for Pogacar vs Vingegaard sprinting up a massive mountain after 180kms of racing. Thank you for not cutting it here! Also: WHAT a scenery that is with the hairpins! Alongside Alpe d'Huez the most beautiful setting of the entire Tour.
Looked like Pogacar held off too long to make his attack, but maybe he was just thinking ahead...feeling out Jonas with this attack today and nibbling away at his lead. He now knows that he can hit Jonas again over the next mountainous two days and take the yellow jersey away from him.
I guess tadej found the solution to drop Jonas. Every uphill, tadej use the solution and it's working. If Jonas want to win the trou, he has to find counter solution.
vingegard was 17 seconds ahead...pogacar finished 4 secs ahead today. how is the lead down to 9 seconds now instead of 13 seconds (17-4= 13). someone pls explain.
Yeah, bonus seconds for coming third. Cycling can be pretty confusing - different stage types (mountain, flat, hilly, TT) have different bonuses (sprint bonus, mountain bonus, time bonus for GC), I think commentators should make this more clear and include it in the highlights also.
@@gilean6179 yeah I'm not sure what to think, except that it really complicates things for the audience. Stage 14 and 17 even have bonus seconds (8, 5 and 2 seconds) for intermediate mountain tops. Actually every type of terrain has 10, 6 and 4 seconds bonus except for TT of course. The mountain tops are also super close to the actual finish, so if you're leading, you get a whopping 18 seconds bonus.
It's really to promote aggression and combativity. Football used to be 2 points for a win, and they introduced an additional point in order to promote attacking. It's what we want to see.
It will remain tiny difference. Till stage 17. Short stage today, favors pogacar. Long mtn stage favors vingegaard. Stage 17 is long. What if they are 3 secs apart starting stage 21? Full on racing then? No promenade? Does stage 21 have bonus secs?
Tradition (Dont know if its a rule) says that no GC rider is allowed to race for the yellow jersey on stage 21. So the race will be decided on stage 20
Jumbo's tactics are HORRIBLE. It is obvious than Pog has a better burst / sprint than Ving. Vingegaard has better endurance, better 30+ minute power. Ving needs to attack EARLY, only way to win against Pog, and last year proved it works. Instead now he just rides together with Pog until Pog can unleash his superior sprint and drops him, impossible to win that way! JUMBO NEEDS TO REALIZE THIS!
