      Would probably say that Adam is likely better this Tour based upon that he's not riding purely for himself. Like Simon is with Jayco. Jonas has seemed nervous on previous stages, wasting energy closing down moves he didn't need to, such as to guys more than 4 mins back on GC (yesterday I think being 1 example). I reckon UAE have realised this and that's why Yates was sent up the road, to test Jonas' response and/or shake him or Kuss loose. Even earlier in the day as well as on the previous mountain stage when UAE have led the bunch up climbs, Yates has been on Pogacar's wheel, meaning Jonas would either have an extra bike length to make up to follow Pog. It's weird as you'd think given Jumbo "one two'd" Pog last year, that they'd recognise when not to chase? Seems to be working for UAE this year though. Exciting times...

    • @charliecederblad8900
      @charliecederblad8900 Год назад +14

      It really feels like a reverse from last year. Now Jonas is closing attack he doesnt need to and wasting energy.
      He also seems alot more nervous on calm stages. Always at the front on flat stages taking unnecessary air and just seeming stressed

    • @mongopopable
      @mongopopable Год назад +13

      tbf Jonas only reacts early in stages because its absolute mayhem. He did not react to Yates, and that was also the right move. Jonas is riding much more defensive this year, which he has said multiple times already would be the plan even if he did not have the yellow jersey. He always said he would win the tour in the last week. the "seperation" tactic of UAE however seems like a thing. I think UAE places a rider between Jonas and Pogacar to make it a little more nervous for Jonas. IDK if it works. Jonas has his eyes ONLY for Pogacar. I think he is also fine by being behind by a little margin before the time trial. this tour can be decided by 10 seconds to be fair, so every second matters!

      I think you could be right but that's leaving a lot to chance and also assuming that Jonas has the legs. It's not like Tadaj has never ridden away from a group over a long climb.....
      I think it's interesting: Jonas put a huge amount of effort into getting that lead on stage 5 but ever since then he's been sliding back which must be mentally taxing. Added to that because he's in the yellow jersey he has the same podium and media duties as Pogacar, something he clearly doesn't enjoy. In a way, it's a perfect spot for Pogacar to be in.

    UAE strategy seemed to change along with the events of the race : 1st, they plan to let a break away take a minute or two... but when the escaped group is too big, they decided to let them go and work a little with other teams to keep a steady pace. At the bottom of the Grand Colombier, with more than 3 minutes, it was clear the stage win would be from one of the men in the front. The pace was still sweet at this time... Adam Yates when to watch everyone in the leaders group to evaluate how Jumbo and others were doing... The UAE started to harden the race very seriously to drop every Vingegaard teammates. Only one of them survived... It was clear that Vingegaard was not feeling like attacking. So Adam Yates attacked to watch Jonas' reaction... and few hundred meters before the finish line, Tadej sprinted more than he attacked in order to take the remaining bonus points... But for me, the idea was to take the stage if possible, if not, to keep Jumbo from attacking and if possible, to inspire a bit of fear with a double leader attacks on Vingegaard... and if they was few bonus points to take at the end, why not. But I doubt that before the last 10 km they were full gas...

    Jonas hasn't got an answer to those turbo punches of Pogi, but he's managing the time difference. It could just be strategic, waiting for his own opportunity to put time into Pogi on another climb or time trial or both.
    On thing's for sure, these two are going to duke it out until the end. Unless, one of them has a bad accident or something to put them way out of touch. UAE seem much more organised to support their lead rider than Jumbo-Visma, so this might be the difference in the end.

      @@alicenchainrings1326 True, I think Roglič was injured so they are hoping that Sepp Kuss and Wout Van Aert can help out. Dunno if they can, at least not in a way that can threaten Pogi. Pogi and his team know this, so they are happy to just play a slow game of "kill off Vindegaard" on the mountains.
      Vindegaard is playing into their hands by not attacking first like he did on Marie Blanque. Since then, Pogi has been dropping little bombs on Vindegaard. If Pogi gets a 1min+ lead in the Maillot Jaune, then Jonas will struggle to pull that back. But if Vindegaard and his team turn over Pogi on the longer mountain stages to come, then the tables would turn again. It's shaping up into a fascinating TdF after a blistering start in The Basque Country.

On the stages where they have a plan Jumbo have been more proactive and effective and they’ve also been far better at protect jonas at the end of sprint stages. UAE obviously had Stage Win as main objective. I think they realized before 5k to go that they wouldn't get it without Pogacar pulling the last 3k, but that would be too risky with Vingegaard on the wheel that long. I think thats why they launched Yates at 3k left to make Vingeegard close the gap if Kuz didn't have the legs, then probably an earlier attack from Pogacar directly after Vingegaard had to pull in Yates. When Kuz closed the gap I think they switched from Stage Win as objective to go for 3rd place since that would give Pogacar 4 bonus seconds, whilst 2nd only gave 2 seconds more than 3rd.
    I think UAE executed well, their team just isn't as strong as Jumbo. Exiting weekend ahead!

      You can see it two ways:
      - Kuss let Yates go, Pogi attacks over, assuming he drops Jonas, and Yates pulls him to the finish line. Now Kuss is behind and can't help.
      - Kuss follow Yates and now Pogi has to follow with Vingegaard in the wheel if he want the bonification seconds. If Jonas is dropped, Kuss can wait to pull him.
      I think they played it perfectly.
      Thank god Kuss was there, otherwise the outcome could have been nasty.

      Because jumbo knows Jonas can’t follow pogs attack if there isn’t a lot of distance left in the race.
      If he lets Yates go, then Pog attacks, only Jonas can follow until he is dropped too. Then he has to chase 2 UAEs alone or wait for Kuss. That is bad.
      Fortunately for Jumbo this will only happen on stages like today. The harder stages Kuss drops Yates.
      Unless UAE place him as a satellite someday.

      Last year, on stage 17, Pogi was more than 2 minutes behind. He had to give it his all, and attack constantly, that's why he also got dropped on Hautacam. He was exhausted from attacks (also from having to cover Roglic's attacks and then for some reason pulling the whole Galibier on his own), the same as Vingo on stage 6 this year. But this year is different. No Roglic, the gap is small enough for Pog to just follow Vingo on his tail and go for bonus seconds. Should be very and way more interesting. I think last years scenario is less likely to happen, and I hope for a tight stage. BUT, we can't forget Vingo also dropped Pog in TDF 2021 in the last week
