A great tour that showed Vingegaard's continued evolution as a cyclist and excelling in every domain. From two years ago when he dropped Pog on Ventoux we knew he had it in him and he's certainly delivered this year. For me the main thing is that Jonas and Jumbo had a very selective build-up to Tour, while Pog had a busy Classics campaign, and then of course a month off to recover from a wrist fracture. That plus losing time early on meant he was probably expending more energy trying to gain back time each day. I love that Pog is a bike racer to his core, but I wonder if him and his team will change his build-up to the Tour for future years.

It would seem that he was right. According to a Danish TV expert/former tour rider who was out there himself to get a "feel" of stage 16. he got passed several times by Jonas, who was out there doing the most difficult parts more than once, to be even more prepared.
Pogacar on the other hand spend most of that day resting, and he has done no other time-trials this year, to prepare for this, unlike Jonas. Jonas has simply been more focused, better prepared and taking advantage of his lower weight and having refined his technique, leaving Pog's brute force behind.

What happened was that TP overspent himself on the TT the day prior. Also TPs weaknesses is to keep up the strength in the long run where that is JVs opposite. Last year we saw the same happen. TP is a great rider but this year he lacked training, especially altitude training. He broke his wrist and while recovering he could not prepare himself as he otherwise would have. I beleive the biggest reason for TPs collapse was lack of training most of any of the other factors mentioned above.
Next year will be different and the fanatic duel between JV and TP will get more chapters added to it.

  • @brunoaramburu740
    @brunoaramburu740 Год назад +24

In line with the title of the video, today marked the culmination of a perfectly executed plan from TJV to crack Pogacar. It started 2 weeks ago, when Jonas effortlessly opened a 50" gap with Tadej. Until last Saturday, he let Tadej use every chance he had to attack, and they let him shorten the gap slowly, basically consuming much more energy that it would have taken in a single stage, recall Puy de Dome for instance. I think TJV had perfectly calculated that Jonas would never lose the maillot jaune. Last Saturday, Jonas recovered in the easiest possible way 1" without wasting much energy, and on Sunday he showed how well his legs were, but anyway still decided to hold back and go all in after the last rest day in optimal conditions. These last 2 weeks, Tadej instead was made to believe he was chasing actually a real chance to claim the maillot jaune, and in the decisive stage, he didn't have anything left in his legs after two weeks full of attacks, one after the other. All UAE bought the TJV bluff from the very beginning.

Seems to me like complete exhaustion from what has already been an intense TdF. This stage was just too brutal after racing hard almost every day. I'd wager a combination of worse preparation and increased stress. His face is seems like he's had the worse night of sleep of his life and that inattentive fall at the start also just screams tiredness. And he and UAE probably new this before the stage even started, so they would've planned around it.
Guess we shouldn't forget that he's only human and how hard it is to ride a Grand Tour, especially at this level. Very few riders can have Tour-winning performances over multiple years. He's also not making it easier on himself by going for the spring classics at the same time.

Pogi needs to drop some weight, some muscle and sacrifice some of his explosiveness for better w/kg climbing performance. Riders are just too good these days and you can't be winning spring classics and also winning grand tour GCs. This year he was having a phenomenal classics season until he broke his wrist. Next year we'll see if he is still targeting classics or if he'll make the tour his priority at all costs. Respect to Ving for this year's dominance.

What riders are you talking about?? I agree that he needs to shed some weight if he wants to gain back an advantage on Jonas, but look at the facts, if Jonas didn't exist, Tadej wouldn't even have been challenged this tour at all. Right now Jonas and Tadej stand at the top of GT riders and everybody else is just bystanders.

@@N2theLAS Even without VG it's a big problem if you can only go for 2 out of 3 weeks.
Now I don't know how much of that was his injury and how well he was able to prepare, but certainly this year he would have benefited from better pacing himself.

@@nt78stonewobble Yeah and if Jonas wasn't there to make Tadej overexert himself, he would comfortably be leading the tour with over 4 minutes and probably in better condition as he wouldn't have to dig so deep everyday to try and close a gap.

Possibly or he might have overdone it trying to win too many stages.
Hard to predict something like that.

Jonas isn’t as social media friendly as others and is more serious (some say boring) but I think that is why he is so good, he is completely focused and dedicated to this race.

Hope he will recover in the next stages especially stage 20 because if he don't i am afraid ineos will do to him what they did with S.Yates in the giro 2018 stage 19

Did Pogi sleep after the TT, it must have been a hard punch on Pogis self-confidence, thoughts must have been running through his head. No sleep and King Stage in the tour day after is not a good cocktail.

Human after all...TBH he's been looking "sick" for several days, even on Joux Plane he looked ghostly. After being crushed yesterday everything just unraveled. A spectacular collapse that's seldom seen in GTs (apart from Yates at the 2018 Giro of course).

The tour was won yesterday but today was the nail in the coffin. Did Tadej bonk or did he just crack? Losing 6 minutes on a single stage is unusual for a GC rider and unheard of for someone of Tadej's abilities. So, I suspect that losing 90 seconds in the TT broke his spirt, then falling in this stage from what appears to be his mistake, by the time they were on the final col Tadej was done. Jonas had some shaky moments in week 2 but only losing a handful of seconds while maintaining the Yellow jersey, the big loss in the TT is what broke Tadej.
