  • Wing Chun is just the Western Boxing the European sailors taught the dock workers in the Pearl River region before WWII. They then had a major Chinese influence on that kind of boxing in the region, it seems maybe with a southern version of "push hands." Who really knows but that idea fits the evidence we see in the methods still to this day.
So we need to teach Chunners how to Box along the way, just as we teach them the Siu Nim Tau form and Chi Sau. I teach a modified SNT which is very short for self defense beginnings which I cover in a whole video series available on my Vimeo Channel or at Patreon.com/irondoggym
The biggest unmentioned flaw for a modern Wing Chun school is no one there learned to fight first. Ancient people learned to fight first, from Family. We don't always get that in modern times. Pre-modern Chinese Kung Fu seems esoteric and fanciful with it's strange exercises and imitations on Animals. I think those forms are to improve a kickboxers basic fighting skill.
So a system like Wing Chun that was perfected in the early 1900's might actually be just the tuning methods and none of the fighting, more like Tai Chi Chuan in this way. We have to come to it already fighters and then get fine tuned by Chi Sau.
So a modern Wing Chun school has a paradoxically problem. How do We teach you to FIGHT as a Chunner before you start to tune it with Chi Sau? I hope you do not expect us to make you a fighter any faster than an MMA or BJJ school? They take 6 months to a year to get a Newbie ready for self defense situations too. There is no magic pill, only 3 to 6 months of hard work.
Wing Tsun uses classic bare-knuckle era Boxing as a rudimentary basic form for these beginners. Left Jab, Right Cross and Left Hook, 3 punch combo. A bare-knuckle jab starts low on the centerline as they did not use the modern boxing guard (no gloves) and the Jack Dempsey stomping step. We can easily turn a good left jab into a good chain of jabs, i.e chain punching.
This video is for new people to martial arts. If you already spar, it might be only a single lessons worth of training for you. But a beginner has many errors to correct slowly and methodically so we use this.(OMG the Thumbnail is perfect too!)
