All these escapes are on someone in a short side control (up on both knees)
What do you do when a guy is more flat? Like sprawled out and driving into you, which leaves less room to escape ..

you simply push up on his neck with your forearm or hand. that will make him raise his head and he won’t be as flat anymore

I have a very difficult time with escaping side control when they have very tight pressure on me. Most guys in my gym, control the hips very well, making it very hard to get out of. I notice a lot of the escapes your showing in this video, in narration, you're saying, "If your opponent doesn't hold down your hips", but what if they are holding down with tight chest to chest pressure, and hip controlling me? Do you have any suggestions or a video to watch so that I can study how to stop getting my butt kicked. Hahaha!!

+Jacob Raper You have to recognize and adjust your escape to what kind of control they have on you and where their arms are placed. For instance, some people do side control by locking their arms around your head and arm putting pressure on your chest with a knee at your hip. In that scenario, you want your arms in as much as possible and to bump up to create a little bit of space at your chest. As soon as you bump, you need to pull your hip away from their knee and start to turn into them with your head facing them and your legs/hips away, stiff arming them back as you go. This will give you the ability to move at your hips either back to guard, to your knees, around to their side, etc.
It takes time and practice to learn and recognize what holds they are using and how you should react. I would suggest watching and learning about all the side control top positions. It will help you understand what they are doing and what are the weak points of what the top guy is doing. Also, escaping side control typically requires good timing and a willingness to move when you need to. When I first started, I always seemed to end up in side control and had a really hard time getting out. Some common mistakes I was making:
1)Letting them keep me flat on my back. As soon as you feel your guard passed and them going for side control, try to turn on your side and shrimp your hips away from them. Create space.
2)Only using my arms/upper body to try to escape. Got to use the legs and hips to really be effective.
3)Not shrimping my hips out and away from them
4)Not moving my hips immediately as I bumped. When you bump up, don't wait until you're back down to try to move. Start moving your hips at the height of your bump. This goes for any bump up maneuver.
      5) Not rotating my body out of the perpendicular alignment with them.

Don’t let the guy on top get his hands together. You’d be surprised how effective this concept can be to escapes.
