This is one of the most detailed explanations of a boxing fundamental I've ever seen. Amazing. My trainer was obsessed with James Toney and told us to watch and emulate him - I tried but was far too quad dominant and didn't ever get taught the simple term "stick your butt out", instead it was "weight on the back foot, tilt your body back and to the side a little, slip only towards the back foot or that side" which I'm aware wasn't actually how toney fought rigidly - he was extremely dynamic. This style caused me to have pains and cramps from forcing a position that was unnatural due to my arkward and wrong mechanics, this feels natural and I can't wait to use this when I'm sparring next . Anyway, I digress, amazing video and I've subscribed - you are appreciated 👏
Even as a coach, Tom's greatest asset is that hes still a student of the game. Ive come across too many coaches whove decided they know enough and stop learning. Truly inspiring
Seriously coach, this was a really helpful video. I always struggled with trying to keep my knees bent, as it wasted alot of energy. As a consequence I was usually too straight legged and my stance too wide. After trying the advice regarding pushing the hips back, I can immediately feel the difference in my stance integrity. I really hope you will continue to make videos regarding the fundamentals, Thanks again coach
The idea of having a great explanation and afterward showing a real life examples, I mean the footage of those legendary boxers, is just incredible! The footage adds a great value to the wonderful content.
Thank you. This help me out because I kept feeling like my upper movement was stuck and slow but now that this open my eyes and I practiced my defense is faster and I feel a more fluid in my weight shift
Thank you Thank you Thank you!! Finally a teacher, teaching! I’ve said this to you before Tom, your teaching generational boxing! This is the base, the fundamentals, the truth! To be taught decades from now!! Great job!
James Toney was the the most technically sound and most naturally gifted boxer of all times! Yes, I said it! He was just a little "lazy" with his training and focus. He ought to be studied in every boxing academy.
I had to discover this thing all by myself gathering from other sports like golf and it's really a game changer and you coach are a genius and a treasure on the web, I hope to come and visit you in person once in this lifetime. Thanks for everything
Mayne this kind of information coach is priceless, as a beginner boxer (just wanting to learn the sport) I’ve watch quite a few channels but I swear coach your channel is the most helpful and makes the most sense especially on this particular video about the stance which is just like a quarterback or a golfer stance I mean this is golden info and fundamentals
He's a real coach. Most of the other boxing channels are made by retired amateurs with a lackluster record or fans with armchair boxing opinions. Even the ones made by former champions are not as good because they're fighters not coaches.
Brilliant video. I tried the shorter stance a few weeks ago during sparring and my coach told me to adopt a wider stance, as he said I looked off balance, even though I didn't feel it. I think these coaches need to take their training to be a coach from Tom!
Wide stances remind me of Bivol, Pacquiao, Inoue, Kovalev... and all of them have one thing in common: They're in-and-out fighters. I think the wide stance has its place, mostly for those with quick feet (ironically), and who can fence with a great jab and quickly shift/pivot and square up when needed (Pac, Inoue especially).
That's true. If you look at an Olympic fencers stance or an Olympic Karate fighters stance you will see that it is wide and bladed, this is for quick in and out movement, however it's not for power as neither the karate fighter nor the fencer needs to generate power in order to score a point. This translates beautifully into a boxers jab however, as the jab doesn't use much torque (although there is a little) instead the jab really is mostly a push punch, and as such relies more on the push of the legs rather than the torque of the hip. I often find myself using a wider stance when I am sparring someone much shorter than me, but when I spar someone my height or taller I use a stance more similar to what tom shows in this video. Also when you watch the Cuban style or the Soviet style they make up for the difficulty of twisting with a wide stance by shifting their weight backwards and forwards (which brings with it many benefits).
Regardless I do not understand how if you watch the guys in that I put in the video and what I explained how that is not ultimate fundamental 101? How could it not possibly be more Efficient and Effective? It’s just basic body mechanics of all swing and throw sports. Like I said you can always point out exceptions but that doesn’t make it fundamental 101.
You can still do everything you are talking about and even better with out a wide stance. It’s already been proven. I can do a video on it. Then the debate will probably be what is considered wide. Stay Tuned!👀
Now that you mention it I believe being too wide is why I wind up getting over my front foot too much when pivoting on the front foot. Good stuff, Coach.
This boxing channel is ridiculously good, all the other boxing channels seem elementary compared to this one. How Tony Jeffries channel blew up is beyond me. I guess the people want that fast food over this gourmet.
I just tried this in shadow boxing and I can’t believe how much more Rhythm I had ! An felt way more pop and power and more stable ! Great advice thanks coach
Coach u the last of a dying breed of the old school. So glad that your content is free coach. This day and age its all about strength and conditioning but the intricacies of the sweet science are seldom seen or even known forget being taught.
Absolutely amazing teaching style! This is the first time i understood all the oldschool fundamentals, because of you two guys. Great Coach and Great figher. Greeting from cold Poland.
Agree with you about professional boxers without great fundamentals. How many people do you see lean forward, keep their head on the center line, and/or even not stepping on the jab who are winning matches.
This is the first video I have seen of Tom and I'm instantly sold, mostly because it's clear he brought that guy out there to demonstrate form, ended up going on a side tangent, admitted he was going on a side tangent, continued passionately on it while the guy just stood there looking awkward, and then immediately just cuts to badass reels of what he's talking about with pumped up music instead of using that guy. Lmao 🤣
✌🏿 to all. Absolutely the truth. James Toney 1 of the best & underrated boxers of all times. Especially defensively. That shell was golden for him. Dipping & slipping & the roll of the shoulder was magic. Pe
I always loved Sugar ray Robinsons stance. I've spent many years practicing so that it became my default stance. It's very effective. Thank you for sharing coach!
This is fantastic advice on a powerfully important fundamental! I had multiple trainers that instructed me to bend my legs and load my legs. I focused on doing this, and I used to describe it as feeling "stuck" when trying to throw punches. Everyone now and then, by accident frankly, I would throw punches that felt so much smoother, and that landed with so much more power. After contemplating this, I found those smoother, more powerful punches came when I was more upright, and NOT when I was loading my legs. I had a greater ability to torque my hips when more upright. This was a HUGE paradigm shift for me. Thanks for the video!
Really appreciate this video. Pushing my butt back wasn’t a concept I was familiar with until now. I just tried it out a bit And I notice a difference. Also your comment about how the power comes from the hips. Changes my perspective. So thank you
Your breakdown of why we should bend qt the waist contradicts everything most fighters learn their whole lives. But, a few years ago, a friend pointed out to me how often SRR bent at the waist. And like you illustrated, Dwight Muhammad Qawi/Dwight Braxton did this constantly. So did Pernell Whitaker. And you added Willie the Wisp and Lights Out? I wager that you are on to something.
I've been doing this sport for 2 years now and felt a bit desperate because I couldn't fix my stance, my steps, knee banding, and my crosses even though I thought I was doing everything right. My coaches say you are talented but I was feeling something wrong. This pushing butt thing changes everything. I wish I watched this video earlier. THANKS A LOT and greetings from Turkey 🙏
I’ve been watching your “Elbow blocks Parry’s and Weaves” video for the last few days, Shadowboxing with it and trying to figure out your students stance. This is so helpful! Thank you coach!
The elbow parrys are difficult to get the hang of at first. I'm used to twisting in the opposite direction of the body shot and bringing my elbows in to block the body shot, rather than twisting in direction of the punch and flaring out the elbow to parry. Taking some getting used to
@@Geeza-rc9kz it definitely has. After a couple weeks of incorporating it to shadow boxing it’s become a lot easier. I’m still working on getting it 100% right and a “normal” movement for me but it’s getting there
Great information as always! Of course, Coach is talking about Boxing. However, as a martial artist here, I can’t help but think how the hip hinge (butt back) contrasts with the more hip forward stance of Muay Thai!! And Thai fighters are certainly known for generating a lot of power with their strikes. (Though arguably Muay Thai is not known for great boxing. Dutch kickboxers tend to have better hands.) Thoughts anyone?
Are u girl ? Iam martial artiest I think when it comeesss too u can't stand like boxer If u stand like that against kicker forget about butt back becz ur leg is gonna die And if u stand as narrow as he say u arr getting taken down like nothing He is just talkin about boxin
There r tactical advantages for these "bad" stances, and muscle chains activated that allow them to perform eg from low or wide stances. U have to train those body skills, but sometimes they happen naturally in the person.
Wow I've been doing MMA I'm more of a ground fighter and I love boxing I mostly teach myself in stand-up new discovery small things make a world of difference.
This man's simplicity on athletic mechanics are technical and correct I noticed the difference in my own ability after observing and listening to this man's advice.
This is something I should have known, but your presentation hit me like a right cross down the pipe. Definitely starting to work on that-at home and in the gym.
Tom is driven, almost fanatical about teaching proper boxing. It's inspiring
If any of his fighters lose, at least they won't be able to blame him for it.
Buster Scruggs of 😂boxing 🥊 just what I need the right teacher who also dives deep to get you to learn

Coach Yankello, your channel is pure gold, coaching at this level for most people, impossible to find.

👊🏼💯
Yes!
The only guys that were possibly more talented was Roy Jones Sugar Ray Leonard and Ray Robinson
Physically talented either Roy Jones or Tyson
Tony's biggest strength was his biggest weakness. He was a fighter down to his atoms. He preferred to fight (or heavy spar) more than anything else.
I had to discover this thing all by myself gathering from other sports like golf and it's really a game changer and you coach are a genius and a treasure on the web, I hope to come and visit you in person once in this lifetime. Thanks for everything

The real Miracle of this guy's explanation and understanding is that each and convey with so few words the quintessence of technique
the best video on the stance I’ve ever seen. Thank you!
Excellent instructional. My favorite channel. So glad you are sharing your knowledge!!!
I learned something new about the wide stance
Agree with you about professional boxers without great fundamentals. How many people do you see lean forward, keep their head on the center line, and/or even not stepping on the jab who are winning matches.
Way too many. Being fed zero threat cherry-picked bouts.
This Video is Majic, I just got over my Knee Bend yesterday,Prior to seeing and hearing this video!!!!!!!!!
one of the best boxing channels on RUclips thanks coach
Great video. This explained a lot of problems that I have with my boxing stance. He really broke it down in this video for me.
