  • On Monday, January 4, a UK judge blocked the US request to extradite Julian Assange. Two days after, on Wednesday January 6,, the same judge denied Julian Assange bail.
    In this video, investigative journalist Stefania Maurizi, Brian Eno, Roger Waters, Yanis Varoufakis, Ken Loach and Frank Barat discuss the meaning of these decisions and what it means for the future of journalism and freedom of speech.
    This event/video was originally published on Frank Barat's RUclips page here: bit.ly/3hUbMtw

    To me this appears to be the most important issue of our time ..it is so disturbing that so few people appear to be aware of how important and vital julians case is to our freedoms and therefore to any semblance of democracy ...the propaganda to smear julian and obscure the issue seems to be overwhelming..this can only be in the interest of the military, the corporations and the oligarchs

    • @42Mrgreenman
      @42Mrgreenman 4 года назад +4

      I agree this is the issue of our time, and perhaps of all time. The freedom of people to put out information that is of public interest. I always get a shock when I realize that "Our time" actually started with WW1...When the capitalist powers first went to war due to a single death and subsequent domino effect due to a clusterfuck of treaties and trade deals. As they say, "The first casualty in war is the truth." and somehow we are still running the same economic system but now we have hundreds of corporate politicians to argue forever instead of a monarch and their small group of ministers. Information control has always been the way to power...It's almost so straightforward I don't know how more people haven't internalized this when those who control and distribute information lie boldfaced, right in the headlines in some cases. If you want to generate power for yourself, you need the information to build the generator. It's a direct conversion from knowledge to power...

      Im so glad you think so ..every time someone agrees how vital this issue is i feel a little safer and conversely every time someone disagrees i feel a little more afraid.. but perhaps it is this emotional response that will motivate enough of us to speak out

      @@Hans_Magnusson yes so i suppose the problem is how to let people know they will be directly affected by less journalism and less free speech and less accountability of the powerful ..and in particular the military. I only just realised recently how dangerous most of these celebrities are as it now seems obvious to me they are chosen and groomed and elevated by the corporations according to their willingness to tow the line .. other than a few rare free thinkers, as in this video talk, there is a resounding silence on this most important subject, we need some new strategies.

  • @Alun49
    @Alun49 4 года назад +1

    I worked as a psychotherapist in the Prison Service for 18 yrs. Assange's assessment of the politics of many prison officers is absolutely correct. Many have Far Right sympathies. I recall when Trump came to power how many officers I knew saw this as a great thing and that Trump was what the world needed. "He speaks his mind!" "He tells it like it is!" was a common perception by many. It is not true of all officers however, and I knew many who were politically more astute. Even so, casual racism, homophobia and misogyny was not uncommon. Many also were in favour of Brexit and wiling to believe the rhetoric of Johnson and the current Tory government. We have still a very long way to go in order to stop the rise of the Far Right and more importantly, to deal with the policies of governments which have been sowing chaos throughout the world for decades. Assange needs to be released and his journalism acknowledged as a hugely important act in defending democracy and humanity in general.

    We need to get the credulous elderly out of the way. They believe in a system that has long been gone and don't understand that the system cannot be repaired from within. Handing the lead to the younger generation will be a long road. The education system has been built to keep them uneducated, uninformed and distracted. No education in economics, social history, world events, world geography -- all against a Media that hides facts and spews lies. I work with young people and they are clueless about what they can do, what is in their best interest. Very depressing.

    Sitting in a pub or café and chatting sounds lovely. I never did much of that because I didn't have the cash. It's hard to go out when you don't have money. Young people are overworked and underpaid, hence they don't go out as much. When they have spare income, of course it goes to video games and stuff like that. It provides entertainment and respite from everything, a chance to unwind before having to go back out into the world and go through the drudgery and frustration of making a living in a horrible system. There are reasons, I think, that people aren't very sociable anymore. Also, odd schedules make arranging meets very hard, especially amongst multiple people. This'll sound conspiratorial, but it often feels like the world's been slowly reorganized as to make sociability as difficult as possible. Keep people too busy, too demoralized, too alienated, too broke, too ignorant, and eventually you produce apathetic people who are unconsciously wondering though life until they die.

      it’s not conspiratorial, in fact, Alan Greenspan boasted about having made US employees, both blue and white collar workers, more ‘insecure’. don’t hold me to that exact line. still, as a socialist and a Bernie-bro since 2016, everyone is really very cognizant of how terrible the situation is for the youngest people, and how hard the ‘Boomer’ generation slammed the door behind them, after they (of course took what they needed, including free or marginal State University Educations!) i encourage you to become a Grey Wolf if you’re not already one. (#ChapoTrapHouse is a sanity-keeping-collective.) you’re absolutely correct about keeping people isolated: the combination of television-to-computers and suburban ‘life’ is illustrative of that💕 also, they’re always telling employees ‘Don’t discuss your pay.’ (idk where you live, but you can always drop by The Majority Report, Left Reckoning, or The Humanist Report and join the chat, too!)

      @@subversivelysurreal3645 Thank you for the kind words. It is helpful to know one isn't entirely alone. I'm curious, what are these things: Bernie-bro, Grey Wolf, #ChapoTrapHouse. Viewing leftist videos is sometimes strange for me because they reference a lot of stuff "the kids are doing these days," and it's been a long time since I've been one. You tend to loose touch as you get older.

    In defense of my fellow youth, it is hard to rise above the contention that our activism is not just immaturity, because of the ease with which our internet organization attempts can be written off as "immature," in a similar way to the way the man attempted in real life to intimidate Roger for "being a loud mouth."
