Since I'm virtually always the only person with a camera that isn't built into a phone, it pays to have something that you don't worry about handing off to someone else whatever it might be.
I bought this camera for the same kinda reasons but it ended up taking over for everything I shoot. It's literally my dream camera in looks, image quality and character
Haha yeah yeah I know what you mean. Fwiw it’s the only camera that I just leave on aperture priority 100% of the time but that’s only because it’s a personal camera that I don’t currently use for work.
I had an X100s when they first came out and loved it, except for the AF, which was frustratingly slow and inaccurate. It caused me to sell it, but I’ve missed it just the same. I was excited about the improvements introduced in the X100V - particularly the tilting rear display - but when I compared it to the X100F, I was disappointed to learn the D-pad was gone and replaced by a touch screen. I may be in the minority here but I strongly dislike touch interfaces, particularly on cameras. I feel fortunate that yesterday I was able to find a local camera store who still had a brand new X100F in stock for $999. Can’t wait to get out and get reacquainted with an X100-series camera!
Also cool about the erf: you can display the pictures after they are taken. This seems incredibly useful for me when doing for example flash photography: you can keep you eye on the subject while you check if the picture is correctly exposed. If it is over or underexposed you can inmediatly see it and change accordingly (instead of going to play back)
bought mine 8 months ago and honestly, I'll grab it before my SL/50lux if i have any foul weather, just need quick photos, have to lug it around for an extended period of time or just want it to fit in my pocket. it's pretty awesome. I did pick up an RRS plate/grip to use with a strap that has a QD socket for cycling and it works brilliantly.

I went from the T to the V. I love it! I got it in just in time for one of my school portrait shoots. I normally shoot with an xt2 and 35mm lens, but I used the X100v with the TCL lens and all the parents commented how beautiful the images looked! I know lighting has a lot to do with it, but there’s just a certain character this camera produces.

I love my X100V and X-Pro3 combo, though I'd be lying if I said I never made wistful eyes at a Leica. Have you tried the WCL convertor that changes the lens to an 18mm (28mm) equivalent? It's really good, it balances well on the camera, looks great on it and is just as sharp.
I bought a X-100T when they first came out. 2014 or thereabouts. I still love it. Like you, I added it to my other cameras because of the size/weight thing. It blew away all my expectations as well. I am not into upgrading, as I get mentally attached to my gear...Ha ha.
Yeah had mine since start of 2015, still going strong. Bought an X-Pro 1 just a few weeks ago for half nothing, love it as well. As a minimalist and just shooting for myself, I thought I get rid of the X100T....well, not so sure anymore. As much as I love the XP1, ergonomically as well, feels good in the hand etc, the lenses make it much less compact, bought a small brevite jumper bagpack etc, then the 35/1.4 (18/2 came with the body) also a 7Artisans lens..well spend time and money instead of shooting...I really came to appreciate the simplicity of the X100T in terms of gear and size......so not sure what to do 🤪
Currently own an x-pro2 and an M3 for personal work but this x100 is so tempting. I’ve had same thoughts about previous versions but this one just might make me get one
Very nice video! Mine is arriving in a few days and I'm very excited to be able to carry a camera everywhere with me and take many more photos. By the way, the photos your daughter took are very impressive! :O
Love my X100F. Will probably wait until the next round to upgrade, but it is tempting. My preferred jpeg recipe for b&w: Acros Film grain: Weak Highlights: +4 Shadows: +2 Noise reduction: -2
I'd love to own the X100V in the future, but I feel like a used X-T3 with one or two lenses would make more sense for the same price. I know they were intended to be used for different purposes.
It's so close for me. I finally ordered one, and i know it'll be great, but i need it to have a true manual focus lens. The little hybrid "rangefinder" thing is a gimmick, and i want it to have a true rangefinder so bad. That would make it a perfect camera
The thing that keeps me from buying these is that I have some lenses for the X series already, and I kinda want to keep using them. But damn those photos are great!
Totally, it’s a great addition to that setup, but if you already are in that system as well, it makes sense to not be redundant just for a size advantage.
Even the X100T has it, first model I think. Still have it, with the X-Pro 1. Great way of presenting stuff Benj, very natural and nice to follow! Cheers from Switzerland
Great video! I like the D pad on the X100F for additional function buttons. I can feel them without taking my eye off the view finder to change settings, e.g. custom settings, or AF mode etc. The X100V has removed that and now has touch screen for extra settings. I don't really like that as I think it's awkward to change them whilst looking through the viewfinder. Have you noticed anything around that or find the loss of physical buttons annoying? The redesigned lens does attract me to upgrade from my F. Had my F for 3 years and pretty much has been my only digital camera I've used in that time.
I was worried about this before buying but to be honest, although I think it could do with one more function button, I don't miss the D-Pad at all. Holding the front flick-switch to one side for a few seconds lowers / raises the internal ND grad filter too, so if you used to have that bound to a button that's freed that up.
That’s a good point. I do use the top function button on my F for the ND filter. After writing my comment I went to see what I had used the other D pad buttons for and turns out 2 of them I have nothing, 1 is AF mode and I don’t think I’ve changed that in 3 years and the other is custom settings which I use all the time to switch film sims/colours etc. So in fact I just need one button to replicate what I do now 99% of the time. So I’d probably just set the top Fn button to be custom settings. My custom settings on the D pad meant I press down to bring up the option then keep pressing down to scroll down through them. However, I’m sure I can manage to press a button then use the joystick to change! 😅 I guess there’s nothing stopping me from buying it now...
I just got the x100F used.... had the original x100 when it came out and hated the focus on it. Needed something smaller for things around the house and small trips.
Hey Benj, what do you think of the Squarehood for day to day convenience (the little lens cap flap, changing filters, cleaning filters, etc.) compared to the Fuji hood (and any others you might like)?
unfortunately I'm going to have to get the adapter as mine didn't come with one to attach filters... an oversight on my part. I don't use lens caps on lenses that have a hood, so no issue there and don't anticipate changing out filter often at all. Cleaning a filter might be a little difficult because of the inverse nature of the hood, but I haven't had an issue so far.
Hi Ben, I'm also in the Tacoma area but just came across your channel. Would this be a good camera for street photography? I'm currently using a full body Cannon that is just a little too big and clunky for me. I would really like something smaller and easier to carry while running around the city, but with good manual controls. Thanks
you make a bunch of interesting and unique points that i haven't really heard other reviewers talk about. what do you think about the fuji colors? i like the form factor and the layout of the x100 line but i found that i wasn't a big fan of the ooc files and i had to correct the colors because i thought they were oversaturated and i had trouble getting them the way i wanted them. since that camera I've been using the ricoh gr line for my personal and street photography
@@cherylatkins7600 the hood protects the lens enough for my taste so I don’t use a UV filter ever, but I’ve been using the 5% Cinebloom filter from Moment a lot for some softer looks and really like it.
I have an Xpro 2 and I mostly use the OVF. The little elf on the side is super useful to pinpoint focus! Does the X100V also have 3 zoom modes like in the Xpro 2? I am not certain about the percentage but, I think the little EVF is able to show up to a 400% crop. I have it set up on my Xpro 2 where I can change it by pressing on the Fn button. It changes from Standard to 100% then 400%, and then back to standard again.
Hi Ben .Ben i own a x100v too.I bought the K&F circular polarizer filter for the camera. But im not so sure if i can go in the rain with. Can you give me an explanation for.Thanks...
I have another question. The lens on the camera is fixed and probably not repairable (for an affordable price) and the camera is obviously expensive. So how is the best way to protect the lens? I have two approaches I've considered. The way I'm doing it now is using a UV filter with an adapter. This way I'm pretty secure from getting it really damaged. The other way I was doing it, when I first got it and for a few weeks, was using no filter and just the lens cap. Either way I do it I also use a bag. (The lens cap doesn't stay on when there's a filter on it). So my question again, Is one way of doing this better/more advantageous than the other? I'm asking because maybe there's some consideration that I didn't realize. Thanks
How has the silver paint job held up for you? I have the black version and I notice the black paint can be scratched/scuffed pretty easily so I can see the brass body color underneath it. If the silver is scratched, is it the body brass colored as well or silver underneath?
I love mine. I also shoot on Acros (yellow filter) most of the time. Benj (or anyone else) have you noticed that black and whites come out a little flat and dark though? I always have to edit mine to get them to “pop” more.

V for five... F for 4 etc. Anyway, this camera (mine) is amazing 😉📸
Want this just to be taking my camera with me more to capture moments with my fam and kids.....while at the same time having no time to process 35mm film anymore and not being able to afford the Q2. Do you find the images too flat compared to using full frame sensor cameras? I could see getting this sucker, putting it in auto or Av, wide open, and never changing it :). - Square hood is sick.
How do you choose the focus point? That's my biggest problem after many years of shooting Nikon DSLR and Leica RF. When I tried an earlier version, focus was the hurdle.
Im really thinking about switching from the X100v to the XE4 simply because the fast heating of the X100v annoys me more than I want to admit because it is not a real issue but still the only thing that keeps me from keeping it. Has someone made any experience with the XE4? Has it because of the similar body the same heat production?
On the streets, I experience a slight delay between releasing the shutter and the camera firing leading to occasional missed shots whereas my film Leicas are instantaneous. Do you find the M10 to be just as instantaneous as your film M bodies? And yes, the Fujifilm vs Leica debate rages strongly in my head for street pix. Thanks for your thoughts and greetings from Portland, OR. Daryl
I sort of wish they put the hidden screen/filmbox lcd on this one instead of the X-Pro3. I love it on my Pro3 but I feel like it would fit the x100 style better
@@benjhaisch that’s true. It‘s obviously the most „advanced“ and „all in one“. But I also just love the simplicity of the X-Pro3 screen. I dunno, I might be a bit of a hipster and just like it for the gimmick haha! But considering which type of photographer the x100 series is pointed towards, I think it would have fit perfectly whereas the X-Pro would have maybe benefited from a fully articulate screen
Please allow me to give a constructive criticism towards this video, on a frontal perspective where it shows you and the camera, it is better to have you and also the stuff that you're presenting in focus. Personally I feel a bit dizzy when watching the video probably because my eyes are sending signal to my brain telling and trying to make the camera in front of you to be focus when it is not. Love the color grading, the lighting and the B roll though. Cheers
Agreed, had to shoot this particular video at f/1.4. Shot my last ones this week at f/4 for better clarity :) just hard to do with limited lighting snd limited space
I have a question. I've been exploring setting the buttons with function setting and I wasn't able to find a way to set a button to change back and forth between LCD screen and EVF. (I like to primarily use only EVF but would like to be able to easily switch to LCD sometimes.) Is it possible to do that in any way? Thanks for any help.
@@benjhaisch I figured it out after I asked. You can set the Fn 2 button to do this. For some reason, it seems some Fn buttons have more options than others. I found that Fn 2 had this option. To set Fn 2 for this purpose you can go to: Set Up, Button/Dial Setting, Function (Fn) Setting, Fn 2, View Mode. Then you can use Fn 2 to toggle threw the viewing modes. It works pretty well. The purpose I wanted this option is that I was using strictly the EVF but wanted to use the LCD for the menu. This seems to be the easiest way to achieve that.
If you are a photographer you would generally take the camera in black, Fuji or Leica doesn’t matter. Now, I have the V and M cameras, I love the V had the 1st and the F but they missed the point, on lens depth of field graduation, and that Leica and Zeiss lenses have. So I gave the F to my pal and the V to my assistant, really on screen depth of field, you must be kidding.
Debating between the V and the xpro3 , the differences in versatility are pretty obvious and my brain says Pro3 but the V has its advantages too. Im worried about the single card slot though.
What are you shooting? For everyday stuff X100V is a dream. There's even a lot to be said for having only one lens. I love my X-Pro3 also though, and it's great for portraiture. :)
I don't know if it's because I'm female, but the square hood to me, looks like a vacuum cleaner head... I would personally choose the original Fuji circle hood.
Took five generations to get the X100 right. I have the X100S. It is okay, but there are a bunch of fiddly things about it I don't like. In addition, my Nikon dSLR makes better images. The X100V seems to have solved all the problems with the previous generations. One day... :)
It’s a detached building from my home with a single heater that I can’t run while filming, so yes. But I also just prefer to wear small jackets and hats anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I wish they would make the camera more for manual focusing photographers... the ring is too small and its not a mechanical focus ring and thats what i realy dont like on this camera... this cam with a lens style of the leica q and this cam would be perfect...

35 year old back? HA! Wait until you hit 40! In all seriousness, enjoyed the video; thanks for posting!
Haha oh I’m sure 😂
Some of us are beyond even that :)
you make a bunch of interesting and unique points that i haven't really heard other reviewers talk about.
what do you think about the fuji colors? i like the form factor and the layout of the x100 line but i found that i wasn't a big fan of the ooc files and i had to correct the colors because i thought they were oversaturated and i had trouble getting them the way i wanted them.
since that camera I've been using the ricoh gr line for my personal and street photography
Hope you’ve found Fuji X Weekly’s recipes and given Fuji’s RAW Studio a try (or set in camera). Really expands “film” options.
Wife wants to use Leica: "Eh, okay...."
4 year old using x100: "Have at it hoss"
😂
Great video. Is your hood the Square Hood brand? It’s so nice.
It is, I’ve recently switched the to Hoage version so it can accommodate more filters though. The squarehood brand is too tight for aome
@@benjhaisch Thanks. You just saved me money and aggravation.
@@benjhaisch I forgot to ask. What filter do you use for protection? I’ve heard some cause focus errors. Thanks.
@@cherylatkins7600 the hood protects the lens enough for my taste so I don’t use a UV filter ever, but I’ve been using the 5% Cinebloom filter from Moment a lot for some softer looks and really like it.
@@benjhaisch Thanks a lot Benj.
Av! That makes a lot of sense w two active youngsters of my own! Keep is simple 👌🏾
If you press the rear command dial it changes the zoom on the mini EVF when shooting optical.
Ohhhh that’s really good to know?
!
Hmmmm I’m not getting that, is it a custom function?
@@benjhaisch When you are looking through the OVF with the EVF window in the corner, click in the rear command wheel. Works on mine :o
@@SideshowBob44 ah weird, maybe the previous owner reset mine
I love my Fuji X100V!
Ja, hat die x100v auch :)
Hi Ben .Ben i own a x100v too.I bought the K&F circular polarizer filter for the camera. But im not so sure if i can go in the rain with. Can you give me an explanation for.Thanks...
I believe that adding any filter will make the camera weather resistant with the filter adaptwr
Awesome video! Is it true this camera isn't good for movies because you can't shoot longer than 15 mins?
And because a 35mm equivalent with no IBIS is a really hard setup to hand hold well.
Very nice review ! Would love to see a Leica Q or Q2 review from you ! Maybe you would like them with the 28mm focal length :)
I’m sure I would ;)
I have another question. Thanks
I didn't think of it, but I could probably get a 49mm lens cap too and use the filter still.
How has the silver paint job held up for you? I have the black version and I notice the black paint can be scratched/scuffed pretty easily so I can see the brass body color underneath it. If the silver is scratched, is it the body brass colored as well or silver underneath?
Mine is good so far. Is the black brassing to an actual brass color like a Leica??? That’d be pretty epic.
Fantastic video. Subscribed! Jan.
The beanie, the glasses, the jacket screaaaams PNW 😅 prob drive a suburu with one of those car roof containers. Love the PNW
Lol
Close ;)
What’s even stranger is that that type of attire (smallish hat, lighter warm layer jacket) matches the unique PNW climate. Crayyyzy. ;)
That’s pretty much what I do. f/2, Av, Auto ISO… haha
Do you have a Leica Q or Q2? Curious how this compares given the price difference?
How do you choose the focus point? That's my biggest problem after many years of shooting Nikon DSLR and Leica RF. When I tried an earlier version, focus was the hurdle.
I have mine set to center point and then face/eye tracking. Works well so far.
Im really thinking about switching from the X100v to the XE4 simply because the fast heating of the X100v annoys me more than I want to admit because it is not a real issue but still the only thing that keeps me from keeping it.
Has someone made any experience with the XE4? Has it because of the similar body the same heat production?
Hi Benj, Does your square hood mount onto the cineboom filter ok?
I recently switched from the actual square hood brand to the Haoge because of this :(
@@benjhaisch Thanks Benj, My Cinebloom pretty much lives on my X100F so will avoid the squarehood, even though it looks awesome. :)
Daryl
Do you have the flicker reduction turned on? I feel like that might be the issue?
Benj Haisch It’s off. 🤣
Hmmmm you think it’s the AF? Or
Do you you have it on MF?
I sort of wish they put the hidden screen/filmbox lcd on this one instead of the X-Pro3. I love it on my Pro3 but I feel like it would fit the x100 style better
Honestly I think the flip selfie screen might be my favorite because you can do both. You can flip it around or use it regular.
I really like the strap!
Ah, glad I’m not the only one...
This is a great question, I wonder if anyone else can answer it. I’m not sure if there is a way to set that or not.
So I gave the F to my pal and the V to my assistant, really on screen depth of field, you must be kidding.
hmmmm hardcore leica shooter trying fuji? interesting
Why are your 4-year-old's photos better than mine D:
Does having the hood on it block the lighting coming in or just weather seal it?
It does both and protects the front of the lens so no need to a lens cap.
Debating between the V and the xpro3 , the differences in versatility are pretty obvious and my brain says Pro3 but the V has its advantages too. Im worried about the single card slot though.
Don’t worry about the single card slot if this isn’t a professional camera for you :)
What are you shooting? For everyday stuff X100V is a dream. There's even a lot to be said for having only one lens. I love my X-Pro3 also though, and it's great for portraiture. :)
I look forward to my V
V is aluminum and F and previous are magnesium
Damn you got that scuff on your aperture ring too?
I bought mine used and the previous owner had gotten some muck in there. Haven’t really worried about trying to get it off/out
So I have a Leica D-lux 7 feels like this is literally like that one
Just buy Fuji xe3 + 23 fujinon then you are done
Any concern for DUST getting inside? Viewfinder or sensor.
The body is weather sealed if you add a filter adapter over the lens, so I have no reason to assume that dust should be an issue.
I don't know if it's because I'm female, but the square hood to me, looks like a vacuum cleaner head... I would personally choose the original Fuji circle hood.
😂
Can I ask where you purchased the silver hot shoe cover that you have on the X100V?
It actually came with the camera that I purchased, I assumed that it came with it originally, but maybe I’m wrong?
@@benjhaisch Ah, okay. Thank you!
X100V comes with the hot shoe cover. X100F didn’t.
I can't believe it's not weather sealed especially considering the price
But it is?
nice video, nice pics!!! :-)
what do you have attached to the strap lugs?
Peak design clips - quick release for their straps
Took five generations to get the X100 right. I have the X100S. It is okay, but there are a bunch of fiddly things about it I don't like. In addition, my Nikon dSLR makes better images. The X100V seems to have solved all the problems with the previous generations. One day... :)
Wait. Is that a leather peak design strap?
Yes! benjhais.ch/clever
This, or a Q mkI?
Is your office cold?
It’s a detached building from my home with a single heater that I can’t run while filming, so yes. But I also just prefer to wear small jackets and hats anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@benjhaisch lol! Thanks for the response! Great video.
I wish they would make the camera more for manual focusing photographers... the ring is too small and its not a mechanical focus ring and thats what i realy dont like on this camera... this cam with a lens style of the leica q and this cam would be perfect...
