This movie was lovely but it just doesn’t compare to the book. However their choices of casting is most exceptional. The contrast of beauty between Amber and Corinna is perfect! They’re both lovely but in different ways-just as Bruce described. They captured the gorgeous, sultry nature of Amber and the breathtaking innocence of Corinna.
It definitely is, obviously because of the times they had to omit a lot from this movie. It seems like they really skip a lot. I'd like to see the book as a mini series now days.

I responded with, when they see how many pages there are, they'll be happy that I'm no longer reading Nancy Drew books.
One of those books whose world you can get lost in. The heroine survives many trials and shapes her destiny through the sheer force of her character, her wit, and resolve. Moll Flanders, Becky Sharp, Emma Bovary are kindred spirits. Anya Seton:s Katherine is one, too.
What a terribly sad ending...the little boy seemed to be very lonely, with no real friends it was probably for the best he went with his Father. She was so caught up in superficiality & deception she had forgotten about the feelings of others. This was a wonderful film very engrossing and interesting.i love all the actors but Linda Darnell shines like a rare diamond!! Thank yo so much for posting it🇦🇽💥😊
This is one of the best books..I just wish someone would make a proper movie of it...it has so much potential for the big screen ...So much better than gone with the wind ......
Note: Author Kathleen Winsor obviously used GWTW as a model for her novel. Many of the incidents are obvious GWTW imitations: Amber marries a rich older man she does not love, she escapes from a burning city, she falls in love with a seafaring semi-pirate whom she loses in the end, and she marries three times.
I read this book when I was about 20. Im 51 now or 52 I never can remember. It was my mums favourite book! I’ve read it a couple of times and it’s still the best book I’ve ever read! I wish they would to an updated film. Although this film is pleasant enough - it’s not nearly as good as the book! I really can’t emphasis enough just how good a read it is. If any of you have not read it, it is a must! Bruce was portrayed as THE most handsome man there is! Bruce in the film just doesn’t do it for me! Go get the book people......👍
The first draft ran to over 1,800 pages, and was titled WINGS OF THE MORNING. It was thoroughly censored and edited. Author Winsor did 6 drafts before she was satisfied. Even then the book had to be cut. Someone in the publisher's office changed the title. Kathleen Winsor herself had a fascinating life. Linda Darnell died tragically in a fire.
For any young people that are seeing this for the first time, please note that this story was banned when I was a boy and the film version was strictly adults only. The book was condemned by the catholic church, the reasons given were "Indecency and 70 references to sexual intercourse, 39 illegitimate pregnancies, 7 abortions, and 10 descriptions of women undressing in front of men". Yet it was a best seller and this greatly watered down film was made with massive omissions. Today this would make an excellent mini series and all the censored portions of the original story could be included. It awaits a more enlightened audience.
This is one book I will NEVER lend out, just in case it doesn't come back. I love to re-read it now and then. Pity the movie bears little resemblance to the book --- but then it was made over half a century ago so only to be expected.
***** I would hope they have after all these years. The banning of books is archaic nonsense, and I daresay Australia is more progressive these days :)
Bruce was a noble snob, and refused to marry her because she was a tramp, and low-born, so he thought. Amber was unscrupulous and promiscuous, but the film sanitized her. The original novel had to be censored before it could be published.
The lead men so sexy. Haircuts mustaches etc. The clothing so swaggering/elegant. Makes today's men look effete and boring. Love the restoration look. Could be a new/old trend-
It’s weird how Hollywood could take such an over the top book and turn it into a more typical romance film. From those who are interested, Amber was 16 in the book, she had around 30 lovers, she got pregnant almost 40 times and had 7 abortions, and a whole bunch of other stuff happened that the censors couldn’t show. The book also didn’t end shaming Amber so thoroughly for her social climbing, pointing out that Bruce was also a social climber but because he was a man no one took issue with it.
i really dislike that Bruce guy. He snubs Amber over and over despite all her devotion to him. In her solitude she makes the only choices available to a woman at the time. And after acting like a complete cad,He dares come in on his high horse like He's the moral one...really don't like that guy.
Amber and bruce were exactly alike...that was the problem. It meant they were both selfish, proud, and ambitious people. Bruce was the only one who knew it would never work between them and that he needed someone in his life that would balance him out. I wish Amber had realized that. She didn't realize that she was chasing something she would never catch. The movie's ok, but the book is a million times better. 100% would recommend.
The Great Fire sequence and Darnell's expression is all the more chilling since fire would take her life As I write this there were two other films where fire played an important part to the plot of her films: HANGOVER SQUARE and ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM Beautiful actress and a beautiful person she died because she tried to rescue someone else from the blaze that claimed her Fate could have been a little kinder to Linda Darnell....
Awesome comment Keith! I watched "Linda Darnell - Documentary" and was going to comment about the fire that took her life. No need now. Watching the huge fire scenes with Linda disturbed me greatly. Linda was a beauty both inside and out. God Rest Linda. A beautiful soul.

I read that she never wanted to be in that business at all, but that her mother pushed her into it every step of the way. So alcoholism, falling asleep smoking..horrible death.
Hilary C She was watching "Stardust" when she left her cigarette burning. Unfortunately, Linda was alive when she was found at the base of the stairs. She later died at the hospital. Only 41 years old. What a talent, a beauty and a wonderful human being.
One of my favourite George Sanders roles, and one of the best portrayals of King Charles III, in my opinion. He shows the loneliness and isolation of a person in that position, and the sadness when the "fragile device" is shattered.
I remember sneaking the book from the top shelf in my mother's library, a shelf strictly forbidden to me. I was only 9 but already reading/inferring well beyond my years. Now that I'm in my "beyond" years, I can still remember the effect the book had on me even then. Now let me watch the movie....and compare.
This has to be one of the best 1940s films I've ever seen! Wonderful! It's far more nuanced than films of that film usually are: who are the villains? Who are the baddies? There is a lot of morality, immorality and amorality and it isn't always clear whose side we're supposed to be on - that is left up to the individual viewer. And the acting is great! The only times we're reminded it's a 1940s film were when Mither Rod Cup ond thi Narse appured weth thir rother extrudinory yccints! But they were part of the joy of it, too!
This is my 2nd favourite book, although this movie does not do it justice in any way, shape or form. If you want to know the REAL (SURPRISING) ending - read the book.
@@miladydewinter7770 The Code was a lot of silly rules made to appease the Legion of Decency. Hollywood has always had a habit of distorting books to conform to the Hollywood agenda. There are dozens of examples.
Please read the book. Amber has red hair not blond. One of the best books I have read. I remember seeing this movie in black and white I was 11 years old.Cried my eyes out. Thank you for bringing back memories.
Read the book and watched the film many, many years ago, and then also years ago, I named my dog Amber after the heroine of the novel because of her beautiful Amber-coloured coat. 🥰
I came across this movie from a mention in comments of another movie "Summer Storm". With Linda Darnell and George Sanders. She played many characters of a woman struggling to get out of poverty. I notice in these two movies it was always something dealing with fire lighting, strange she died by fire in real life. 🔥
Oh my gosh, I can't believe I found this film here on You Tube! Although Winsor's classic novel is more in-depth, as books are compared to most screenplay versions, this film remains a treasure for all Linda Darnell and Cornel Wilde fans.
read this and watched the movie for the first time when I was about 13 and fell in love with Bruce. I was heartbroken when they didn't end up together but now being 28 all I have to say is Bruce is a prick and Amber didn't deserve to be treated the way she was by him
I was very touched by this movie, and as a hopeless romantic, I was hoping for a happy end. It's rediculous, I know, but I'm quite a bit upset now having watched it all the way through. - Oh well, I'm going to have a long hot bath to restore my inner balance :-) Thank you, for uploading!
Just finished the book again, had to rewatch the movie! Agree with former comments, definitely needs to be remade into a movie-series of some type to really get all of the plot! Still, acting and costumes are amazing! Well done

The parts where the child Bruce speaks is so moving! All he wants is to be a normal little boy and be with his father. His mother was an idiot for making him choose between her and his father. Stupid woman!
Love Cornel Wilde, plus I so enjoy this time period in history! Yes, the book was certainly not for children! They had to clean it up to get a rating for most to see the movie!
The Hollywood offering of Kathleen Winsor's great book. Colourful movie. Watch and relax but don't get too excited. Could not watch it more than once every ten years or so!
Linda Darnell, She was married and divorced three times: to cinematographer J. Peverell Marley from 1944-1952, to Phillip Liebmann (a New York brewer) from 1954-1955 and to Merle Roy Robertson (an airline pilot) from 1957-1962. On April 10, 1965, Linda died from burns she received in a fire at the house of her former secretary. Ironically, she had been watching Star Dust (1940) on television, which was one of the films that set her career in motion, when the house caught fire. She had appeared in a total of 46 films. Often described as the "girl with the perfect face", Linda Darnell died at the age of 41.
Left at a farmer's doorstep during the English Civil War, Amber St. Clair (Linda Darnell) -- a girl of noble birth -- grows up in a small village under the puritanical eye of her guardian. Wanting more out of life, she flees her home for London, following a traveling soldier, Bruce Carlton (Cornel Wilde). Once in the city, Amber and Bruce form a relationship, but Bruce soon leaves for the high seas. Alone and pregnant, Amber decides to continue her upward social climb.
the original story by Kathleen Winsor is so sanitized by this 1947 Hollywood version (albeit a beautiful Linda Darnell does her best to bring Ambers character to life!) that a remake today would be able to give the story justice that this book deserves!!! I am surprised that I have never come across any hint of this ever being considered and don't understand why what with all the remakes of Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights etc...... a mini series would be a must to cover all the different plots that appear throughout the story and to connect the beginning (Ambers meeting of Bruce at the age of 16 in the village where she grew up ) and all her misadventures and escapades living under Charles II Restoration England to the ending (Amber going after Bruce on a merchant ship to America after being lied to that his wife had just died) what a amazing romance and a dramatic period in Englands history.
Quite a long movie; I know the book was a big success and big book and Windsor married the much married Artie Shaw. And yes siree, Linda Darnell was one of the most beautiful actresses ever. And good, too. Letter to Three Wives and Fallen Angel are all the better because of her.
I agree with you there...it would make a fantastic mini series...all of the Jane Austin and Bronte sisters novels have had way too many remakes...Forever Amber would appear fresh to those that never read the book or seen this movie
I could not agree more Jamie Curles --- this is one of the books I would take with me on a Desert Island (if I had to choose 3 books) - my first would be "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, "Forever Amber" would be the second --- and I have yet to decide on a third.
Lauren Conrad I named my daughter after this book. I have asked other Amber's mums: did you name her after the book? Sadly, as one, "what book"? The film could have been better but that's usually the way of it, however I agree with Slavi Burchett-Slavchev that Bruce is a total shit. But a woman's heart wants what it wants, it was ever thus......
Lauren Conrad I just got done reading the book and it was awesome and I think the movie is good also. I did read gone with the wind and it was so different then the movie but the movie is good also
Hallelujah !!! A movie I haven't already seen, and a magnificent one at that !! Excellent movie .. even if I did hate the ending (due to personal preference outcome).
lana turner wanted this role but she was at MGM and Darryl f.Zanuck didn't want her, so he made darnell a blonde instead of peggy Cummings who was a English actress and Zanuck didn't think she was big enough name to carry a picture so he cast linda darnell who was a star at fox.

I’ve heard of the book, though I’ve not read it. Instead I wish to focus on this cinematic treatment which is Old Hollywood period melodrama at its best. Linda Darnell is the copperhead beauty, Amber, who is skilled in every type of courtly intrigue. George Sanders is the lecherous King Charles II, who had been restored to the British monarchy. Cornel Wilde plays the handsome rouge whom Amber truly loves, but he’s never around long enough to thoroughly quench her passions. Add the London fire, ruthless murder, blind ambition and the rampant plaques, and you have a raucous romp through imagined history. 👑 👑 👑 👑 👑
@@scotnick59 Well Scarlett did marry the man she loved (Rhett) she just didn’t realize it. Rhett admitted at the end of the book that he was in love with Scarlett but didn’t show it because he knew she would see it as a weakness and try to use it against him. Scarlett was also a little more dignified than Amber and smarter too, but they were both fools when it came to love.
Hm, I see it differently. From the beginning she forced him and he has never made a secret out of it that he does'nt want her. I feel sorry for her because she misinterpreted.
In the book Bruce straight up tells Amber “I’m not going to marry you.” Before they even set out for London so that was on Amber for being dumb enough to think Bruce was going to marry her just because she got pregnant.
Okie Dokie. I've never seen a more convincing endorsement for polygamy before. LOL At the end I was like JUST MARRY THEM BOTH AND BE DONE WITH IT!!! Haaaa!
My favorite movie. Can't get this on Netflix. So nice it's on RUclips. Love all the actors, especially George Sanders who played Charles II. Jessica Tandy is so young, I almost didn't recognize her.
Bore absolutely no resemblance to the book, which is 972 pages long. A book I will never lend out in case it never comes back. But an interesting little movie.
In all fairness you have to take into account the technology and time. I wish someone would make a mini series like "Hell on Wheels" Fantastic book and story.

How sad - she must have been quite an amazing person as well as beautiful.

loved the novel. Wonderful story.
I loved the book. I still have a copy (Part 1 and Part 2) books, dating from the 1940’s. Amber was such a strong character.
I always feel sad when I remember the terrible fate of Linda Darnel. She was so incredibly beautiful.
I read that she never wanted to be in that business at all, but that her mother pushed her into it every step of the way. So alcoholism, falling asleep smoking..horrible death.
Is this where we, who are less Classic movie savvy, ask how she died?
Yikes! Hey, I just went on a dinner date with a Firefighter tonight! Just saying...
Hilary C She was watching "Stardust" when she left her cigarette burning. Unfortunately, Linda was alive when she was found at the base of the stairs. She later died at the hospital. Only 41 years old. What a talent, a beauty and a wonderful human being.
Stephanie Sunderland Actually the real cause of the fire was never determined.
I love the fashions from this time period
Some of them were gorgeous, but keep in mind there was no dry cleaning.
One of my favourite George Sanders roles, and one of the best portrayals of King Charles III, in my opinion. He shows the loneliness and isolation of a person in that position, and the sadness when the "fragile device" is shattered.
Hi
LOL! The Charles on the throne NOW is Charles 111!
George Sanders in Forever Amber is Charles 11 of the Stuart Restoration 1660!
Richard Green was Robin Hood on tv. My first crush. 😉
I loved Richard Greene as Harry and George Sanders as King Charles II.
Great movie but sad. I've seen it years ago but forgot a lot of what happened. Thanks for posting it.
Also loved Jessica Tandy. She was a wonderful actress.
This is my 2nd favourite book, although this movie does not do it justice in any way, shape or form. If you want to know the REAL (SURPRISING) ending - read the book.
The script writers had to conform to the 1947 Production Code.
@@LaurenceDay-d2p So did the Code state that any film made after 1947 must bear no resemblance to the actual book?
@@miladydewinter7770 The Code was a lot of silly rules made to appease the Legion of Decency. Hollywood has always had a habit of distorting books to conform to the Hollywood agenda. There are dozens of examples.
@@LaurenceDay-d2p The Count of Monte Cristo to name but a few !!!
@@LaurenceDay-d2p Yes indeed - "The Count of Monte Cristo" being but one (my favourite book, by the way).
The stage and court and plague sequences are so great!
Please read the book. Amber has red hair not blond. One of the best books I have read. I remember seeing this movie in black and white I was 11 years old.Cried my eyes out. Thank you for bringing back memories.
that's y David O . SLznik originaLy wantd Maureen o'Hara for tha part roL of Ambr Saint-CLaire
Actually the book describes Amber as having, “Honeyed curls” so she most likely has dark blonde hair.
Plus, Amber was named for her rare amber-colored eyes.
But her hair was flaming red here! Except for the last few scenes
Read the book and watched the film
many, many years ago, and then also years ago, I named my dog Amber after the heroine of the novel because of her beautiful Amber-coloured coat.
Great story! Great movie! Great Linda Darnell!

If Bruce's heart didn't change when Amber risked everything and saved his life he was unworthy.
Exactly.
He saved her life also, when he performed emergency surgery.
read this and watched the movie for the first time when I was about 13 and fell in love with Bruce. I was heartbroken when they didn't end up together but now being 28 all I have to say is Bruce is a prick and Amber didn't deserve to be treated the way she was by him
Amber was a stalker. Bruce made his feelings clear from day 1 but she kept on pushing the issue. She got what she deserved.
I agree with you, Bruce was a selfish cad.
Bruce saw Amber for what she was: A bed-climber. He was bound by his family traditions and did not want to marry a whore, regardless of her beauty.
@@MK-hh1vo No, Amber fell in love with him, you are wrong,it's quite clear, I wonder how you can be so blind or ..
We need either a mini-series or a remake of this!!!
It could make a great miniseries
There is no American or English actor right now to play the characters 😮
Woaw what a great movie 👍 really love 💖 these classics, thank you so much for sharing it with us. 😇
I was very touched by this movie, and as a hopeless romantic, I was hoping for a happy end. It's rediculous, I know, but I'm quite a bit upset now having watched it all the way through. - Oh well, I'm going to have a long hot bath to restore my inner balance :-) Thank you, for uploading!
esthi signer The movie had to be made where the “bad girl” isn’t rewarded for her sins. Read the book.
It was a happy ending. The boy got to be happy in the present.

I expected a happy end too, like all the old greek movies. I am sad.
moovie script was butchrd ruind by the Hays code
Just finished the book again, had to rewatch the movie! Agree with former comments, definitely needs to be remade into a movie-series of some type to really get all of the plot! Still, acting and costumes are amazing! Well done
1:11,the great leon shamroy.4 academy awards for best color cinematography,in 1942 for the black swan,44 for Wilson,45 for leave her to heaven and 1963 for Cleopatra.a record I believe that hasn't been broken.plus he was nominated other times.
Linda Darnell, what a film Goddess....
Great movie score by David Raksin!
Thank you for the information. How sad!
Gary Murphy so young,
There is "Linda Darnell - Documentary" on youtube. What a tragic life.
Wow! How sad.
Thank you for the short bio, it was informative. Should I watch the 1940 Star dust? I saw of of the same titles from recent times..
Beautiful movie😘👍love the costumes💕actors are outstanding, 💎❄️✨💫thank you for this. 🕊️💖✨🌏🌌
Forget Amber, the best book of all time, written by Kathleen Windsor. Wish they'd do a film re make.
The title is Forever Amber.
@@gailfisher1350 written by Kathleen Windsor
Forever Amber
Left at a farmer's doorstep during the English Civil War, Amber St. Clair (Linda Darnell) -- a girl of noble birth -- grows up in a small village under the puritanical eye of her guardian. Wanting more out of life, she flees her home for London, following a traveling soldier, Bruce Carlton (Cornel Wilde). Once in the city, Amber and Bruce form a relationship, but Bruce soon leaves for the high seas. Alone and pregnant, Amber decides to continue her upward social climb.
that bruce was as annoying as ashley wilkes from gone with the wind.
The similarities between this and GWTW are striking
According to the film, I would not compare Ashley with Bruce.
the original story by Kathleen Winsor is so sanitized by this 1947 Hollywood version (albeit a beautiful Linda Darnell does her best to bring Ambers character to life!) that a remake today would be able to give the story justice that this book deserves!!!
I agree, the book is begging to be remade in this more frank age--
jamie curles n
Fantastic book. I wish more people would read it today.
Unfortunately, I am not named after the book, but I have read it many times, and it's still my favorite. 😊
Cheer up. My daughters middle name is Amber because of this book...And so is one of my grandies....
My name is AMBER and always told about the book Forever Amber The book is the best I ever read and have reread it about 3 x GREAT BOOK LOUSY MOVIE !!!
Lauren Conrad I just got done reading the book and it was awesome and I think the movie is good also. I did read gone with the wind and it was so different then the movie but the movie is good also
One of the few books I could read again and again.
even if one is not interested in the plot the costumes are divine.
They are wonderful!
Hollywood's idea of English fashions.
Not really because if you know anything about England you would know they right so learn fashion history of other Country's.
Thank you for posting this movie.
Read the book many times. 1st time watching the film.
Hallelujah !!! A movie I haven't already seen, and a magnificent one at that !!
Excellent movie .. even if I did hate the ending (due to personal preference outcome).
No one knew, that she was a child of noble birth
lana turner wanted this role but she was at MGM and Darryl f.Zanuck didn't want her, so he made darnell a blonde instead of peggy Cummings who was a English actress and Zanuck didn't think she was big enough name to carry a picture so he cast linda darnell who was a star at fox.

10 mins was enough! Such a great book set in interesting times.
A search for love and to be loved is always a battle.
A fairly good movie with a sad ending .
Amazing story, one I will not forget. Great acting and setting, must’ve cost a pretty penny. Thanks!
She could have married a nice man who loved her. She was a fool.
Many women are..they choose status or money and ask why they are unhappy!!!
As was another vixenish heroine named Scarlett O'Hara
@@scotnick59 Well Scarlett did marry the man she loved (Rhett) she just didn’t realize it. Rhett admitted at the end of the book that he was in love with Scarlett but didn’t show it because he knew she would see it as a weakness and try to use it against him. Scarlett was also a little more dignified than Amber and smarter too, but they were both fools when it came to love.
@@scotnick59 not that vixen
Hm, I see it differently. From the beginning she forced him and he has never made a secret out of it that he does'nt want her. I feel sorry for her because she misinterpreted.
In the book Bruce straight up tells Amber “I’m not going to marry you.” Before they even set out for London so that was on Amber for being dumb enough to think Bruce was going to marry her just because she got pregnant.
I've been looking for this movie for a long time - thanks :)
Okie Dokie. I've never seen a more convincing endorsement for polygamy before. LOL At the end I was like JUST MARRY THEM BOTH AND BE DONE WITH IT!!! Haaaa!

Bore absolutely no resemblance to the book, which is 972 pages long. A book I will never lend out in case it never comes back. But an interesting little movie.
In all fairness you have to take into account the technology and time. I wish someone would make a mini series like "Hell on Wheels" Fantastic book and story.
