- Sir William Hamilton, a widower of mature years, is British ambassador to the Court of Naples. Emma who comes for a visit with her mother wouldn't cut the grade with London society but she gets along well with the Queen of Naples. Emma likes being Lady Hamilton and life goes smoothly until Lord Nelson pays a visit. Sir William decides at first to let his young wife have her fling and pretends not to know what is going on. But the real life lovers, whose first screen romance was in "Fire Over England" (1937) have an even more burning passion for each other in this film.
Apart from the superb acting and chemistry between Leigh and Olivier, the fundamental importance of the film is that it was made in the early stages of World War Two. Refences to "Napoleon wanting to conquer all of Europe" was the obvious reference to Hitler's ambitions! It was a morale-boosting film at a time when Britain needed such a thing. Olivier repeated the feat with his Henry V in 1944. Back to the film itself. Technically and visually superb and way ahead of its time! A genuine love story as well, even in real life. Thank you so much for posting!
I've always believed she should of won that Oscar for her role in this film. Though she won for GWTW 1940. So they had to give it to someone else. I'm not totally sure who won that year.
This movie was one of Churchills most loved. The 1:10 scale model of H.M.S. Victory you'll see in the Trafalgar scenes later on is exhibited in the Historic Royal Dockyard Halls in Chatham where Nelsons most famous flagship hat been constructed from 23rd April 1759 to 7th May 1765 based on the instructions, plans and Navy Board Model done and given by Major Shipwright Sir Thomas Slade.
@@garypatterson2055 she should have made black swan. Her talent was such that she could have made such films a century before.
They were married when this movie was made
La mejor Blanche Dubois de la historia fue Vivien Leigh
I had never seen that movie, she is such an extraordinary actress. I feel her in my bones for crying out loud. She outweighs him and everyone else so blatantly and i mean this with respect as everyone is so very good in this. Vivien leigh you still are the best actress in the world 55 years after your passing.
What a stunner Vivian was I would watch GWTW as a girl and no Disney Princess could compare in my mind. Modern actresses can not hold a candle to her looks or talent on screen. Still my favourite.
Such a sad ending to this film but so very believable. When you lose someone you truly love that is the end you don't really live anymore you just pass the time and get older. A part her died when he did she just closed the curtains and collapsed in grief that she can not recover from.
She was like a prettier version of Elizabeth Taylor, who was a beautiful woman in her wonderful right.
@@kam0406 I think she had a charm that evaded Elizabeth Taylor.
What a shame she died young of tuberculosis. Tremendous talent. ‘Captain Butler, Admiral Nelson. Let’s go meet Stanley on the streetcar!’
Well, I was born in 1988 so Disney princesses held my heart and still do. But if I were a little older it probably would have been Ms Leigh :)
God -- she was never more beautiful than in this film. Just can't take your eyes off her, even for the gorgeous Olivier. Thanks so much for posting the whole thing.
"Why do we always meet, just to say goodbye?" What an amazing performance by Vivien Leigh!💔
3 of the finest at their pinnacle, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier in an Alex Korda film. A classic. Thank you.
Excellent movie, one of my favorites with Vivien Leigh ❤
There has never been anyone like Vivian leigh. That right eyebrow has a life of its own! And Laurence Olivier is at his handsomest.
I like to think that her opposite number was Margaret Lockwood whose eyebrows never moved at all because she was an actress who could keep her emotions under control in every role and yet turn out as much magic as Vivian Leigh.
@@RobertLocksley385 Vivian had sparkle in her eyes. Who wouldn't married to Larry!? I had a work mate who looked like Viv and just as bubbly portrayed in this movie. Even used her facial expressions, and she spoke Italian and German. In the card-gaming scene, she reminds me of my work mate, waving her arms confidently spouting Italian even while holding a poor hand .
That right eyebrow deserves an Oscar
* I. LOVE. IT. * , PERFECT. EXPRESSION. OF. BOTH. INCREDIBLE. UNBELIEVEABLE. ** STARS. ** !!!!!!!!
Elegant indeed, but I would argue that he was at his handsomest as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.
Great film and even better acting. Leigh and Olivier are superb of course, but this is Leigh's film and her beauty is breathtaking. She is exquisite in every picture she graces. Thanks so much for posting this memorable film.
Hello Gilda,
How are you doing ?
Vivian Leigh was such an extraordinary actress. She also suffered from Manic depression. Oliver took care of her.
Then divorced her and married someone else.
@@virginiaschaefer9693
Lawrence Olivier was a great actor..but not such a good man..
He was known to be bi-sexual...and had many affairs while married to Vivian Leigh, with both men and women.
This caused many problems in their marriage..
@@christinecatt8039 Vivien had many affairs with other men, mostly actors. And because of her bipolar problems and possible other mental problems, she was not nearly as discreet as Sir Lawrence was. He took care of her for 20 years of marriage. He was not a fly by night type spouse. He was there to make sure she could be taken care of in a sanitarium whenever she had her episodes of nervous breakdowns on sets of movies she was making and had to be let go because of it.. Sir Lawrence was the first one her last husband John Merrivale, called when he found her dead in her bed in 1967.. He immediately came over to her house and sat with the body until the funeral home people and police came
Olivier had many affairs himself. Actually, I really don't know that Olivier was all that discreet with his philandering. Olivier cheated on wife#1, wife #2 and wife#3. Actually there was only one movie that VL was "let go" from because of her "episodes." That was "The Elephant Walk" where Elizabeth Taylor took over. I think the older she got, she became more troubled I guess you could say.
I don't know that Jack Merivale called Olivier first. And he wasn't her husband. He was a companion and good friend. However, when Olivier was informed of her death he chose to get up out of his hospital bed and go to Eaton Square to see for himself.
To hear English actress Sarah Miles tell it in her autobiography, she had a years long off and on affair with Olivier and that she met him on a movie set in '62. Isn't that when Olivier was married to Joan Plowright? Indeed it was. Interesting that the Olivier estate or Plowright never bothered to sue. I think we all have a pretty good idea of why.
The ending,😔 she was a great actresses, beautiful and talented like no other. Thank you for the movie. Love Vivien forever.
This film is magnificent ! This was Churchill & Stalin's favorite film because in was about admirality. The work that went into the glorious ship battle boggles my mind, of course they were miniatures but the craftmanship is wonderful. The balcony scene was heartwrenching. You never see clips from this movie included in film retrospectives.Vivien looks even younger than she did in GWTW and it makes me suspect if it was made before its 1941 release. Thank you for the opportunity to see this film !
Her romantic films that she chose to be in are most interesting. It's like she herself never believed in a happy ending.
A beautiful talented but tragic woman
Anna karenina is a fine example
Olivier and Leigh were married . I Forgot that but they were and illness and life interfered.
@@susanmurray4176 her first marriage was awful too and yes she had health issues including depression and was given shock treatments for them. Being beautiful and talented does not equate to a happy life though on or off screen always.
41:57 I don’t know why, but the “day or two” thing makes me emotional. He never admits when he’s vulnerable in any way, but even though he’s trying to pretend he’s less ill than he really is, he’s actually admitting to Emma that he can’t get up right at that moment, that at that moment he is actually unable to do something, that at that moment he isn’t “perfectly well”, and that at that moment he isn’t as strong as people make him out to be. He has a reputation to live up to and he makes sure that everyone has that image of him so nobody thinks he’s weak, but he trusts Emma enough to let her see to the “real him” per say. That’s what love is, trust. And it was all because of Emma’s kindness that he trusted her. Their love is so beautiful in this film
So many scenes in this film are pure poetry. I don't mean just the words, I mean the whole package. In at least one scene, it adds up to just a look on a face. For example the window scene when Nelson returns with Emma to England, and his wife is the hotel. The crowd is cheering, and Nelson goes out on the balcony. The 2 woman are there watching him. Emma says a few words, but it isn't the words that matter. The culmination of minutes of lead up, is the look on Emma's face when she realizes that this woman is Lady Nelson. The woman who has haunted Emma's dreams for so many years is now standing right beside her. Emma is obviously shocked. Some movies are so well put together that you have to call them poetry.
@@cattymajiv one of my favourites is the beginning where Nelson says “the manner in which she conducted her campaign against the queen was a masterpiece of strategy” because Lady Hamilton in this film and in real life was famously beautiful. She was a model and a muse for Romney, so many knew her just from seeing her appearance in paintings. She was likely called beautiful so often that the compliment began to mean nothing to her, as it was the only compliment she heard. This is emphasised in the way that William is presented: even Emma’s literal husband only sees her for her beauty and her outside appearance. Nelson, however, doesn’t comment on her appearance at all. In any other situation this would lean more towards him not finding her especially attractive, but in this scene it means the opposite. The fact he comments on her intellect rather than her appearance shows how he sees her as a person rather than just an object to be collected and shown off. Being in the Royal Navy, a lot of Nelson’s job is about strategy. The specific wording of “campaign against the queen” and “masterpiece” of strategy not only shows how impressed he is with her (as he uses language he’s used to, meaning that he’s being genuine) but also that he views her as an equal, as he’s describing what she’s done in a similar way that people would describe the things he does.
@@averagehistoryenjoyer4072 So true. The entire script was masterful. As you have indicated, a great deal of thought has gone into every phrase. The same amount of attention was given to every move, and every detail of clothing, hair, accessories and scenery.
I have no idea how they made his injured eye look so real, beside showing only his good eye most of the time, and using a patch. To make it look more real, in some scenes, somehow, they made his right eye look funny. I don't think contact lenses were invented yet, though I could be wrong. Whatever they did is very realistic, and a credit goes to Olivier for tolerating what was probably pretty uncomfortable.
I don't know if THW won any Oscars, but it was certainly deserving of many of them. I will probably go and find out. If it didn't win that year, I'd sure like to watch the films that did. It's hard to imagine any film being seen as better than this one!
@@cattymajiv the effects in this film are all great, with the battle scene as well being brilliantly done. I heard they did that one by having two people inside the huge model ships controlling them and pressing and pulling things inside to fire the cannons and whatnot

Vivien Leigh was a class act. She makes today's wannabes look very second rate.
Tenth-rate even!
The battleship scene was very well done. It really engaged the viewer and brought history to life.
Vivian Leigh was one of the most beautiful women of the 20th century.
Old movies
Vivian Leigh , she was such a beauty. I loved her in the movie with Robert Taylor, Waterloo Bridge, that also was one of Vivians best, she worked with alot of very handsome leading men. Including this one with Lawrence , which was also her husband at the time, of this classic film. Thanks for the great movie.

I was blessed to meet Ms. Leigh in Houston , where she lived until her death. I received a signed picture, which I treasure to this day. What a strikingly beautiful woman. To see her up close was breathtaking. 8:02
Vivien died in London in July 1967. She did NOT live or die in Houston.
So lucky ❤
The history of Emma Hart Hamilton was astonishing. This film doesn't begin to portray her. She truly rose from desperate poverty to the nobility thru her marriage to Lord Hamilton. However, he died. She then hoped to marry Lord Horatio Nelson but he also died. Lady Hamilton had several children. Two died. One was lost to history. One survived and thousands claim descent from Lady Hamilton and Lord Nelson. However, Lady Hamilton died broke in Calais.
I haven't seen this for 30 years. thank you.
Loved seeing real life husband, Lawrence Olivier and wife, Vivian Leigh starring in this great movie.

what a sad ending! i almost cried! what a beautiful romance story, i could feel the chemistry between the two actors! An amazing film, in which I am shocked with myself that I only recently have heard of it! it doesnt get the recognition it deserves
BrieLovesTea her life story was sadder. The real Lady Hamilton didn’t have a happy life. Horatia, the child that she had, never acknowledged her as a Mother. She refused to believe it was true. Lady Hamilton was left ample provisions to live, but she continued to live lavishly and ended up in debtors prison.
"Gone with the wind" had the greatest success.
It did. But GWTW was far from her best in my opinion. Waterloo Bridge and Dark Journey were 2 more that with this 1 were all better than GWTW. But maybe that's because I can't get over the idea that Clark Gable was creepy. I disliked him strongly in everything he did, so I could never relate to him as Vivien's love interest.
In fact, I read somewhere that she was repulsed by him. Not only was he too old, but he was a chain smoker and drinker whose clothing and breath stunk, and his teeth were heavily stained. Add an arrogant attitude, and kissing him would be 1 of the worst experiences in a young woman's life! (Maybe Lawrence smoked and drank too, but at least she loved him.)
I just love this movie! I don't know how many times I've watched it! ❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful collection! Thank you for providing us with precious moments each evening! Joe and Regina
What a sad but moving story. Thanks for posting.
So little is said about the extraordinarily charming and elegant Alan Mowbray, who was just 45 when he played Sir William Hamilton. This was his SEVENTY EIGHTH FILM!!!! By the end of the 40s, he'd appeared in over 120 pictures. Talk about a prolific actor.
So difficult to believe that he did all that, and passed away a mere 12 days after I was born in 1969. I certainly missed the Golden Age of cinema.

What marriage? These two stars were not married.
@@susanmurray4176 Leigh and Olivier? They were married for 20 years, from 1940 to 1960.

Yup! And 1 of the longest lasting.
Oh that balcony scene, the quenching of their yearning starting at 50:05. Oh that window scene, the anticipation of the end 1:56:00. And all that he did for his country having his last wish at 1:57:35 unfulfilled.
And they came SO CLOSE to finally being able to be happy! If he only not worn his captain's gear on deck that day, he would have returned home, with victory over the enemy complete, and retired with Emma to live out their lives, maybe having more children.
I wonder if it's really true that he had been warned not to wear his uniform and medals on deck, precisely because enemy sailors were known to target the ships' captains, but being Nelson, he thought that would show cowardice.
Funny how what is obviously wisdom was so often called cowardice back then! It rips my heart out every time I see this, to watch him die so unnecessarily! What a tragedy for them both, and their daughter.
1:13:03
The timestamp given by InnaMarkeeva is for the start of the scene where after defeating Napoleon Nelson returns to London with Emma. He greets his his dad, then the window scene, when Nelson is on the balcony and Emma notices Lady Nelson.
A beautiful Woman......the loveliest face to ever grace the silver screen..........
Ashley Avery One of the most talented actresses ever. However, her looks distract people from seeing immense talent. I think she was superior to Olivier when it came to acting.
+Cerell Morrison You are so right!
+Ashley Avery
I prefer Tierney as the loveliest face to ever grace the silver screen. However, Leigh's not far behind in my book. Would love to have seen a movie starring Leigh and Tierney at the height of their powers.
+Ashley Avery I agree, she really is a treat to watch!
+Ashley Avery "The loveliest face to ever grace the silver screen" - agreed and also THE consummate actress. This movie may have been overshadowed by the more expensive GWTW but Vivien Leigh gives here an equally great performance in quite a different role.
Somehow I've never seen this movie - not sure how I missed it. What a pleasure watching it. Love the costuming and dramatic acting style typical of this era in movies. Interesting to learn Lady Hamilton is not a fictional character! Will be interested to learn more about her...hope there are good documentaries or something.
A very good point! Her extraordinary life does seem like fiction!
One aspect of Ms. Leigh's talent I have noticed after watching several of her films is the demanding physical requirements she submitted to in order to convincingly portray her roles: 1) Scarlett in the rainstorm; 2) Blanche abused by Stanley; 3) actually miscarrying as Cleopatra; 4) falling beneath a train as Anna Karenina. 5) As Lady Hamilton, from 2:33 to 3:20, she (A) is vigorously pursued by gendarmes, (B) falls on the ground while running as the wine bottle she was holding slides away, and (C) endures the back and forth of the brawl before her arrest and confinement. As Sir Winston Churchill said after meeting her and Olivier for the first time: "By golly, she's a clinker." I assume he meant she was a woman that men would raise a toast to.
+Charles Buxton Yes, and for a physically delicate woman. She withstood it all.
+Charles Buxton Add "Waterloo Bridge" where she was run over by a bus!
+Brooke Hanley As in real life she battled intermittent tuberculosis.
And manic depression. The arts that is in cinema made her very effective as an actress and as a person.

@@cattymajiv Actor is the container term for the whole collection of people who act. The Actors Guid refers to male and female actors for example.
Technically if the person acting is female she is an actress and if male, an actor. This is proper English. The feminists somehow thought that by using the word 'actor' they would be taken more seriously and it was somehow 'equal'.
I remember when it all started. Many 'actresses' were trashy and sexualised and the serious people wanted to be taken seriously so they called themselves Actors. It was very awkward at first but now of course . . . it has taken over.
IMO it erases women to make a feminist point.
So much of language has been mangled to accommodate a misplaced belief that if one were to distinguish the person taking the action as female it is somehow lesser. What stupidity!

Pivotal moment in her career, I think. She mastered the craft rather instantaneously. The killer performances in this heart rendering cinema by all the actors is amazing. The sets are tremendous. This would be great on the Big Silver Screen again.
It would be! I would just love to see this in a theatre, from the front row, colorized!
I know some people will jump all over me for my opinion, so I have to say this. Although colorization isn't perfect, the newest techniques and equipment have made it pretty good, VERY much better than it used to be, so it gives an awful lot more depth and detail to a film than B+W does. We are finally able to see what the director and actors saw.
I know lots of people are stuck in the belief that the directors wouldn't have wanted to work with color film, even if it had been available, but the facts prove differently. Except for special cases here and there, B+W has been abandoned, and it's easy to see why. It simply isn't very expressive and gives such a flat effect. Yes, they used it as well as it could be, and some of the greatest films were done in B+W. Because that's all they had.
I hadn't meant to write such a long thing, but I've seen people get attacked for saying color is better in any way. It's a stupid reason to attack anyone. But most other people are reasonable, so for them I partially stated my reasons. It's only a fantasy of mine anyway, so who cares!
Maybe this won't even be read by anyone. That's ok. It doesn't hurt me. I wish a happy summer to everyone!
Thanks So Much for this Great Movie! The combination of the beautiful and Superb Actress Vivian Leigh with the Very handsome Mr, Olivier prompted me to watch this film which otherwise I would not since the War involved was the very old era European which bores me but, their romance as the continuing twine trailing intricately thru the movie made the entire movie entertaining for me.
I even loved the war ships which were great sailing boats with large billowing sails, so architecturally lovely.
Also, noticed a war song here had the melody of a song I love "Danny Boy", just had the entirely different words as pertinent to their war, but I still sang Danny Boy along with the music!!!
I did not understand why at the very end they did not show a little how Vivian got to her horrible state and what happened to the child that we never saw?
OH WELL..none of that diminished this Great Movie!

I was ironing and watching this movie at home on TV just about the time Henry Wilcoxin visited Vivien Leigh at the country home to tell her that Laurence Olivier was killed in the sea battle. A bulletin broke into the broadcast to show a plane had flown into the Trade Tower in NY. I thought how could that possibly have happened, when the second airliner appeared and crashed into the second tower. My knees gave out from under me, and I slumped down onto the arm of the sofa in disbelief. I always remember that terrible day during that scene. Days later, the network re-screened the movie as the ending was not shown because of continuing coverage from the live tragedy in NY.
What an incredible memory! I will think of what you have said very often. It's such a vivid remembrance.

Such a beautiful romantic tragic film. To think this was just two years after Gone With The Wind. Would have been great in colour but in black and white adds to its charm. superb acting and film.
Love the moments with her Mother. Vivian is indeed most beautiful.
I was shaken when I saw the scenes with her tired and run down... That acting was wonderful
An excellent film showcasing the tremendous talents of Sir Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. In the various comments I read about Ms. Leigh's performance in other films, one for me stands out of all the others and that is her performance in "A Streetcar Named Desire" as the tragic figure Blanche Dubois. She was absolutely superb especially in her scenes with Marlon Brando. Vivien Leigh won an Acadamy Award for 'Best Actress" in 1952 for her performance in "A streetcar Named Desire".
always real joy to see this...i would like not a remake but a movie or miniseries based on the whole book....this covers just a fraction of her life story
The novel by Susan Sontag, The Volcano Lover, about the Hamiltons. Mind blowing.
Thank you for that! I find her fascinating and she was born not far from where I live.
I shall order this book now!
@@acechadwick You mean, Lady Hamilton was born...in Fresno?? **I DIDN'T KNOW THAT!!**...lol

Vivien Leigh is the greatest actress !!So convincing and expressive!!
No debería actuar cómo sabelotodo. Gran argumentos usas.
I so love this movie. I've watched it several time's and it never gets old. What a simply exquisite couple. She so hauntingly beautiful and he so hauntingly handsome.
Same here. It might even be the 1 film that I've seen the most times. This is probably the 5th time for me, and it won't be the last. I positively love it!
There's nothing like the old Classics.
The movie is simply amazing, but I'm glad the reality of facts was much different, Nelson and Emma was not a tragic story, they lived under the same roof with Emma's husband in a kind of menage a trois that everyone accepted. But of course at the time or even today you can't put that in a film. In a film you show everyone that adultery must be punished...
Winston Churchill liked this film so much he watched it 5 times in a month in 1942. (“Walking with Destiny”, p. 673)
Vivien is superb here
Donde podemos verla en español.Gracias.
Vivien Leigh was brilliant, no doubt. It is amazing, nevertheless, how Sir Laurence Olivier can also lend so much of his genius to his characters. I just watched that 1939 Wuthering Heights with him and must confess that after admiring so many Misencenes of it, it was the first time I managed to feel some sympathy for Heathcliff.
Just love this couple! Can't get my eyes off Vivien Leigh!!!
Thank you, wonderful film.
What I love most about movies of this era are the unscripted dialogue...😊💖💖
I wish they had made this movie in color. Olivier and Leigh in color in such a romantic true life film on and off the screen. That would have been so awesome due to their natural coloring. She was so beautiful and he was so handsome. The most beautiful couple there ever was long before Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton whom I also enjoyed in films together.
Fine comment.
In 1941 very few movies were made in color. Remember, in 1939 Wizard and Over the Rainbow Both had huge budgets for color.
It's deeper in black and white. I like it this way, just like Wuthering Height, L. Olivier and Merle Oberon were so beautiful. They're all so beautiful in those tragic love stories....!!!!
@@namyarasree totally agree, love B&W movies!!!
A lot of people were surprised that Vivian Leigh was English when she played a a very convincing Southern Belle in Gone With The Wind.
She is the greatest actress I have ever seen. Both she and Olivier moved the game on.
I watch this movie probably every other night........i doze off happily and contently after my prayers....
Thanks for this😴❤❤❤❤🙏
Thank you so much!

Thank you for sharing classic VIVIEN LEIGH film.. I love her, I always dreamt that she could've been my glamorous godmother or fashionable aunt.. Thank you
Great movie... Vivien and Olivier were both so beautiful and wonderful actors's. This was one of my favorite movies. Fire over England was pretty good too. Scarlet Pimpernell is a great movie... Merle Oberon was beautiful in it. I have soo many favorites. Oh another good one with Vivien Leigh, was Dark Voyage, it is on here too.
