Ever since I saw her in that movie, along with Johnny Whitaker, I’ve been a fan of hers, not a crazy fan, but just interested in what movie she’s in. I researched the real story. The man was old. He had illness and losing his teeth. Was in constant pain. He's the one asked dr. for the chloroform. According to autopsy he only had it in stomach intestines which indicated that he committed suicide. There were no burns in throat or esophagus. That's probably why she was acquitted.
Very interesting movie. So sad that her husband and his Dad were jerks. Glad the younger brother was supportive and was able to help get a better life than the one she started with.
Jodie Foster: Well I'm just about to start this movie. I know full well that anything with the beautiful and talented Jodie Foster has to be of exceptional performance. ❤❤❤
I've always thought Jodie foster acting brought a relatable character that I could easily cross paths without ever knowing something was amidst her reality. I really appreciate Jodie Foster's talent.
She spends more time flirting with men more then her own husband. She was mostly the problem and not a loving heart who liked to flirts with other men, and cause problems. He wasn't perfect either, but he did try over and over and over again. A smile can go a long ways...
Although he was abusive, she gets away with his murder because she's such a talented hypnotist, and no one knows how she could get him to take the poison willingly. Even the actual giving of it is left to our imagination. What a beautiful femme fatale, and no one is going to condemn her, because he was such a bastard.
@@catherinekeller4230 Yes, what a monster. He has to be, so we don't have any qualms about his murder. Of course on one level, we know she shouldn't get away with murder, but the film cleverly seduces us and takes all our misgivings away.

One has to realize that this was a time when women had no rights. They were bought and sold like furniture or livestock. They were completely at man's disposal. Right or wrong, it was how the world lived. True love was rare. They were servants in their own homes and only valued as potential child-bearers. There were many women consigned to fates far worse than hers.
Not historically accurate. Many women were running their husbands estates and kept the books. Some also inherited if no male heir. Saying they were cattle is blowing things out of proportion. Also there were laws against domestic abuse and peers pressure. The problem is that things were more taboo.

A sad, controversial account. Not too many details are given to draw to an acqurate conclusion. Victoria seems to have been a lonely girl, very beautiful or attractive - apparently -, who dreamt of freedom and happiness beyond the environment of obligation and obedience she had been raised in. By accepting to be wed she saw hope, but from the beginning she did not like or love what this man offered her. She was eager to fall in love, for she did not hesitate to seek the company of the brother and the priest. She was young, fearful and maybe even a little bitter. Had Oliver been "an abusive man" she wouldn't have been able to do what she did. Oliver was evidently uneducated and greedy - affected by avarice -, but I dare to say he was hoping to find love in his chosen wife. He had needs of his own, which didn't allow him to give more. His actions were according to his society: restrictive. Yet, Victoria was evil. The way Oliver found comfort in Victoria's talk and presence shows that he had been seduced by her from the beginning. He didn't want to hurt or harm her, he just didn't know how to treat her better. I believe that her relationship to the priest and the assurance of the brother's affections gave her the strength she needed to decide to do what she did. She could only think about her own happiness and this contributed to create the unhappiness of both, hers and Oliver's. Oliver understood he had lost control over his own life, but he was a troubled man who got the opposite of what he was looking for. A cautionary tale for men. A pretty face isn't always the facade of an angel alone. Many blessings. Thanks for the posting.
@@paulheydarian1281 Why would you ask that Paul? It's a bit childish don't you think? Have you no education about the abuse inflicted upon the vulnerable at all or did your parents fail you by not raising you correctly? Seriously, how old are you?
@@hilaryc3203 I don’t blame Paul- I assume he was referring to the obvious fact that even though he watched her through holes in the wall-which is very creepy and perverted-and was extremely controlling…she POISONED and killed him. It's been so long since I have seen this, I am looking forward to watching the Jodi, I knew and loved. God Bless her and may she have found happiness amongst all this craziness.
You would think that she would have been taught how to have a better personality from the get go. That she was far luckier then so many others throughout time. She was part of their problem from the start.
I'm a Boomer. I thought the movie oddly strung together and not very entertaining. Perhaps the characters weren't fully developed. Most of the scenes just had people standing around with stony faces attempting to indicate some sort of overwhelming life moment...which ended up being everyone standing around with a stony face.
It was so great to see a great film from New Zealand , ❤❤❤ . The 80s was a very good era for " film 🎥. "Smash place," "Battle truck," "Came a hot Friday," "Utu," "Quite Earth," "the piano," "Veglelance" may well have spilt that wrong ????. Great kiwi films.

We where both young then 23 then known for years also hung with same friends over the years...she was a student of my Aunt and her ex husband in college...😊
Why did he want to many her in particular? Was she his daughter who had been placed in the orphanage 18 years prior? And the baby she had that died, a product of incest with her father unbeknownst to her? Unanswered questions. Creepy.
@Trudy *Even Victoria asked (her brother-in-law) how her husband found her. Everyone knows about mail order brides btw. No need for bold letters acting like a know it all.*
@@TrudyPatootie That doesn't explain the opening scene, hiding the identity of the man dropping off his son's unwanted offspring in the Victorian era of hypocrisy & appearances, New Zealand became a British colony in 1840. Then there's the 20+ year age gap and the twisted obsession of the "husband" (father) for the naive girl, spying on her. He wanted his child back in his life, and this "marriage" (adoption) satisfied his curiosity. That's my take on it. People are strange, and incest is as commonplace now as then, perhaps even more so back when women had few rights, and no access to social workers or legal help, or youtube, and such dreadful intimate revelations were not discussed in polite society. There was a tv series called "Mistral's Daughter" on the subject of an father's unnatural lust for his daughter, made in 1984. "Mesmerized" came out in 1985.
Only at given times, when they are in love and then mostly to have children. Never in human history women and men were together as nowadays. Married men worked with men, married women with women. Men dealt with men, women dealt with women. A man would sometimes help a woman and viceversa, but friendships between women and men were never not at all tolerated as they are nowadays. Orthodox saints also say marriage is not happiness but martyrdom. Why? Because men and women are so far apart.

This is based on a true crime that happened in 1886, London. The RUclips channel "They Got Away with Murder" featured it: "A Poisoning in Pimlico" was the name of the video. The actual story is fascinating!
An excellent RUclips channel by the way "They got away with murder" by Mark J. Maguire, so glad you mention it. All the cases he reviews are fascinating because of his reasearch, reasoning and masterful narration.
Janet, "PS": I know looked at the "Poisoning in Pimlico" once more, because I couldn't recall a similar story on the channel "They got away with murder". Now I know why - the actual story is so different from the movie and where it put (at least the moral) blame that I didn't remember them as similar. So I guess Hollywood /Foster put their own perspective on it, which makes sense in the context if the movie story and her sympathetic figure. Just that it doesn't seem to bear much resemblance to the facts. But again, thank you for making the link!

Jodie Foster. Nobody remembers how iconic she was.

😂😂😂😂
We do 🙄😂
@@9001012 yes IS! So right.

How cruel to poison someone, no matter how disagreeable he was.
I like this kind of movies. Thank you for sharing them with us.
Being a pervert is abusive mentally and emotionally
Is that bit of folk wisdom something you picked up from TV guide?
@@paulheydarian1281 Why would you ask that Paul? It's a bit childish don't you think? Have you no education about the abuse inflicted upon the vulnerable at all or did your parents fail you by not raising you correctly? Seriously, how old are you?
@@paulheydarian1281 A pervert, attempting to defend your type?
@@hilaryc3203I would not engage in a conversation with a perverted BOT!
@@hilaryc3203 I don’t blame Paul-
I assume he was referring to the obvious fact that even though he watched her through holes in the wall-which is very creepy and perverted-and was extremely controlling…she POISONED and killed him. Slowly, painfully, evilly-while (BTW) he was helpless like a baby.
Which is more abusive?
Taking someone else’s life is only okay when it’s the sole remedy for them taking yours.
Jodie Foster can play anything and does an excellent job I Am a Big fan of hers enter workJodie Foster can play anything and does an excellent job I Am a Big fan of hers enter work. I just wish that she would do more movies these times because she's just got such great talents. Also she can play any age almost any time.
Always loved Jodie Foster. I think the first movie I saw her in was...the little girl who lived down the lane with Scott Jacoby. Even named a dog I had after her..Jodie. lol. She's tough.
I was 6 Yrs. Old when this film came out, the movies a new one for me. Thanks for posting this unusual film.
You're most welcome, Linda. So happy to give you a little walk down memory lane.
It's based on a true story 😮
It's been so long since I have seen this, I am looking forward to watching the Jodi, I knew and loved. God Bless her and may she have found happiness amongst all this craziness.
Jodie Foster should be considered a National Treasure.
Isn't she?
She is
I think I know what is going on, but if there is a book I may read it and find out I was all wrong.
Jodie Foster never puts her name to anything shabby.
You would think that she would have been taught how to have a better personality from the get go. That she was far luckier then so many others throughout time. She was part of their problem from the start.
Great movie and cast. Jodie Foster is a personal favorite. ❤
Two extraordinary actors
She was only a baby.God Bless her soul.May she rest in peace sleeping with the Angels at home.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Not a boomer but thanks You tube. I love a good film.
Thank you for uploading this movie❤Great quality.
Thank you for posting. It’s not your fault it is a strange film. 👍
Haha! Thanks MT. Appreciate you understanding.
Gaslighted
I have spent time in New Zealand and John Lithgow's accent is TERRIFIC. He is spot on for this time, place, and class.
Thank you for posting this wonderful movie...i wonder if the Doctor was in love with her? It all ended well for both George and Victoria 🇦🇽💥😊
You know, I wondered the same thing. Did the Dr love her?
What a strange film.
The saddest thing is that they NEVER loved each other from the beginning. I know that happens a lot.
Thanks Tanya! Love Quiet Earth and The Piano. Will be checking the others.
Awesome brilliant Jodie foster! She’s very good and the performance was amazing! I was surprised at the end when the actor was dead 💀 and suddenly rising and attacking her! Brilliant! Thanks for sharing! 🩵🩵
I’ve never seen Jody Foster and a movie where she looks so young before. Any movie she’s in is excellent.
She has been in movies as a child.
@@shirleyontiveros612 Yes Taxi Driver & The the girl who lives down the lane & TV appearances.

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. One of my favorites.

I never knew about this movie,
but I LOVE both leads.
Such a great find.
Awesome. Glad you like it, charity.
Thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Was sorry when it ended. Wished it was a mini series. Thank you for sharing this. ❤️💕👏
I didn't recognize John Lithgow for the first minute of this first scene!
Why did he want to many her in particular? Was she his daughter who had been placed in the orphanage 18 years prior? And the baby she had that died, a product of incest with her father unbeknownst to her? Unanswered questions. Creepy.
*Girls who aged out of the system were advertised same as Mail Order*
*Brides. It was common practice at the time.* 😏
@Trudy *Even Victoria asked (her brother-in-law) how her husband found her.
@@mmay6621You used bold letters.😮
@donitaforIrest9064 I am totally with you. That opening scene told it ALL
They're both so good.

Great New Zealand accent by John Lithgow!!
Yep. Enthralling movie. Great retell.
I sometimes wonder if men and women really do belong together ...
Maybe only for short periods of time...
Yes Indeed. To procreate. It is the reason why we exist.
@@sirfgmk2 Circular reasoning.
I seriously doubt it. We lived in small tribes for thousands of years where individual autonomy as well as tribal cohesion were valued.
Only at given times, when they are in love and then mostly to have children.
Never in human history women and men were together as nowadays.
Married men worked with men, married women with women.
Men dealt with men, women dealt with women.
A man would sometimes help a woman and viceversa,
but friendships between women and men were never not at all tolerated as they are nowadays.
Orthodox saints also say marriage is not happiness but martyrdom.
Why?
Because men and women are so far apart.
This was a good movie. I read many of the comments and it certainly keeps the conversation going. I love movies almost indiscriminately. In most movies I find something to like/love. In this case I loved the two biggest actors and I have no criticisms of them. Now as for the comments many viewers missed the mark. Thank you for this upload.
Lord Farquad is what I think about when he laughs😅
But marvelous acting!😊

If Jodie's in it, it's bound to be a fine film . She was 22 at the time .
It looks like she’s thinking revenge is sweet after all the suffering he intentionally caused her

His horrible Dad caused his warped behaviour towards matrimony. The movie The Piano showed a similar thing, but she negotiated a divorce not a murder.
Great watch, thank you 😊
I love Jodie ❤

They didn't have the benefit of Mr. Maguire's research! 😊
This is actually based on a true crime that happened in New Zealand that is why it is filmed and set in New Zealand
A great movie . Love your channel
Anyone notice the vicar/priest's 1980s glasses at the wedding vows part? 😂
