    Basil Rathbone at his best in another Holmes mystery. Love these old black and white movies too. Beats anything today. Thanks for the post. Joe S

    In this one, Holmes shows more warmth towards Watson than in some of the other films, where he can be a bit patronizing. Here, he actually praises and thanks Watson for standing up for him while his reputation is being damaged.

    I do want to watch this motion picture but doesn’t the title remind you of that lady who bought a pair of black pearl earrings before hitting the sea over a boat with friends. She was told that black pearls bring protection when she just liked them. Little did she know they were about to experience a life-changing incident through which everyone failed to survive but her in the midst of endless blue.. for what seemed like endless days to her until a passing-by ship saved her. She lived to tell.. wearing the one earring she did not lose through that unfortunate trip with a shiny black pearl dangling still from her earlobe.
    This title just reminded me of it.

    There seems to be a trend on You Tube to post weill known films with their titles cut off. Makes no sense. This movie has been on You Tube in its complete form for years. It may well be now, I have not looked.

      @@TinnyDee Prhaps but the movie has been on You Tube for years. I am not sure what exactly the copyright covers or if once it goes into the public domain it doesn't stay there. The chopping of titles seems to be a recent phenomonon. Its easy to look movies up on IMDb or even identifiy those posted without giving the title. I really don't like seeing movies mutilated like this.

    Love this version, but Nigel Bruce is my least favorite of the Watson charactors. Holmes would never align himself with such a bumbler. The Jeremy Brett "Watson" is much better.

    • @robertsmith-dr5tm
      @robertsmith-dr5tm 2 месяца назад

      They decided to make Watson more of a bumble in the films than he was in the books because it kept most of the attention on the more clever Holmes.

      I really like and appreciate Nigel Bruce’s character…many times extremely intelligent people are bumbling people…thing is; he’s LOYAL and that’s what matters. Think if Holmes didn’t have that…
