An overlooked classic. Taut, well-directed, well written film, short 'n sweet. Watch for June Cleaver and Sam Drucker in uncredited appearances. Great post, thanks!
This reminds me of "12 Angry Men" in that the setting is basic, the story is intense and riveting and the acting is superb! Thank you for posting this gem!😊
A great movie from start to finish. Great story, tension filled, and superb acting from seasoned pro's. The cinematography was on point, best of all it was extremely tight. I've never heard of it, I happen to like B movies (sometimes they are forgotten treasures). This movie was way ahead of its time, unfortunately it's a mirror of today's headlines.
My husband walked by and I showed it to him, it is not a remote. He says they did have screens that big, 25". It did stick out of the wall behind the frame. He said they were really expensive so many ppl didn't have them He fixes up antique radios as a hobby.

It's what's called a projection TV. The image from a regular sized tv is enlarged and projected on a screen with lenses and prisms. You could get a bigger image, but it was blurry up close and the whole thing took a lot of space. In this case I'm pretty sure the "tv" is actually a film projection on a screen, trying to film actual tv images in this era (and after) results in an obvious "raster" effect, the lines in the tv image are clearly visible.
SPOILER . . . . 1:00:00. He didn't say where he was in the phone call. . A journalist would never *'bury the lead'* like that. He or she would make sure to get through. Part of the job.
In the immortal words of that renowned and crack shot law enforcement officer Bernard Fife, "He's A Nut!" Not meaning to be a name dropper, but didn't we get a brief glimpse of the Beave's mom, June Cleaver?
Interesting TV -- I don't think they had the technology to make a reflected image, large screen TV in 1950. Nevertheless, this could be the first depiction of such a TV in a non science-fiction movie.
I was surprised, my husband walked by and I showed him. He said they did have bigger screens back then, but, they were very expensive. Did you hear the bartender say it was &1,400 installed. Back inn 1950? It is recessed into the wall behind the frame, it had tubes, of course. My husband fixes antique radios for a hobby, so he knows what they had then .I never seen one before.
@@estelleadamski308 I'll bet the "tv" image is actually a film projection on a screen. Trying to film tv images in this era would result in a clear "raster" effect, with the lines in the tv image clearly visible.
It's a background projection, film projected through the rear of a semi-translucent screen. You can see the same effect in one of the Three Stooges shorts.
Great that you noticed. William Conrad was in the Golden Circle of Old-Time Radio character actors performing in many network prime time shows -, especially detective/suspense and of course 10 years as Marshall Dillion on radio Gunsmoke .... and surprisingly on tv as the Narrator on Rocky and Bullwinkle. That his character here dismisses television as low brow crap is priceless. As you noted, like many other highly skilled radio performers he ended up on television .... often in popular roles that were technically beneath them.
I knew after about 12 mins that this was going to be a hostage movie. It was being set up as one so I figured it out. I don't like hostage movies. I think the old womanizer is Howard Sprague from the Andy Griffith Show. Also it's Leave It To Beaver's mom.
Love old black and white's, somehow missed this one. Very good flick, so much drama, loved it.
Wow! Fantastic! Thank you for posting this movie!

I noticed Barbara Billingsley right away, but had to watch a second time to spot Frank Cady.
Was Arnold the pig with Sam Drucker? 🐖
Cady was in quite a few crime films around this time, usually played an uncooperative witness.
Also Jake & the fat man actor William Conrad as the bartender
I’m just starting to watch the movie so I will watch for “June Cleaver and Sam Drucker” 😊

Good comparison- it did have that touch to it
It's odd
We don't really how much THEATER is in acting.
The camera ANGLES, makes it not look that way
Very suspenseful. On the edge of my seat from the beginning to end. Thumbs up.👍

Really good movie 🍿🎥🍿🎥. Thanks for the posting.
Great movie! Thank you for posting it. I remembered Marshall Thompson from the Daktari series in the late sixties
Really cool film Thank You for the post.
Fascinating to see Marshall Thompson in this terrific role!
This is an excellent movie! One of the best melodramas I’ve ever seen.
Good Movie. Had me on the edge of my seat.
Old movies they are the best thanks
Wow!
This was a surprise.
Great movie!
Happy 2025 for everyone may it bring LOOOOOTS of positive things to everyone who really deserves it... Greetings from Belgium !
Suspenseful, well written, well acted and directed despite low budget. Grade: solid 6 or 6 plus. Recommend.
Really was a great movie, give it a watch!
That's a pretty modern- looking screen for 1950.
I couldn't believe it either and it was remote controlled This was 74 yrs. ago

Flat Tv?.. i wonder what Brand hehe
It's a small background projection screen, or process shot, as they were called. It's film projected behind a translucent screen.
GREAT MOVIE TO WATCH. 😊
Excellent film thanks. Amazing that they did it so well on a shoe string budget. Great casting. It really was more like a play that a movie.
great movie, and a cameo by Barbara Billingsley as Dorothy
Watching few minutes I realize I’ve seen this …. It’s a good one!
What a young William Conrad! A good movie..
I liked the random day in the life customer dialogue and not necessarily plot driven. seemed even contemporary considering the time it was made.
A decent film.
Good script. Acting. Story. Thanks
Sis looked at him like, “well, you didn’t buy me that drink…” 😩😭
Great movie the modern movies are dreadful thank you 😁
I liked that, plenty of tension and lots of uncertainty. I thought that the hot food vendor turning up on the scene was priceless. Opportunity knocks.
Was surprised at the beginning how good the music was for an obvious B-Movie. No wonder, music by Andre Previn.
Good story, thanks.
I'm glad that the psychiatrist, who wanted to take "his responsability", paid for it.
Great movie thank you

Gret old movie. I liked it.
that was excellent.

What a good movie.
75 yrs later and still naming serial killers sick, versus immature selfish evil wuss.
Good Movie 🎬
Super movie👍
Is that a flat screen TV on the wall in the bar???❤❤❤
Wtf,did they have TFT LCD full flat screens back in 1950 ? Can someone explain what we see in 4:13 ?

Yes, that's right. It's film projected behind a semi-translucent screen. I've done it myself, years ago.
This is a Psychiatric Disorders Patient who were not treated well in mental hospital by the Police Doctor ❤ excellent in every Sense
Good flick, just ending
😃Good movie . A fan of William Conrad .
Do you know about mid 50s movie about Fearless Fagan...the lion for MGMs movie logo?
Marshal usually plays a good guy in all his other films.
Also, a quite a TV for 75 years ago. Was good.

How did Wyckoff escape from the mental institution wearing a suit and having money for bus fare?🤷♀️
Is the bartender The Fat guy the serious canon
4:00, it's Fat Cannon !! 😎😎

Not one mention of faith, God, or purpose in life through our Lord. Very sad indeed.
Did you watch the movie?
