To me it seems like this is all some kind of demensia as a result of trauma from an accident of sorts. No ones infected, there is no bunker, the reality is a domestic environment.
The whole story/ending is intentionally ambiguous. Either the death/injury was an accident and you are just crazy, or there actually is an infection and your fighting it. Both things can be true no matter which ending it is. Incidentally, a 'peridium' is the thing that bursts in the fridge, getting the spores in you. Its kind of like fungus skin, specifically the stuff covering the spores (and reproductive parts) a fungus.
Person. Or the main character is crazy and imagining them threatening him. He could have inhaled spores (like from the sample in the fridge) or been infected by radiation and gone crazy. He murdered the guy in the corner and his coworkers are trying to lure him out. There are many different options possible, not just yours
Person. Lol if being "crazy" is the opposite of sane then why is all your evidence based on the perspective of the main character? You're explaining as if there's only 1 way to be "crazy". Someone can be going crazy and still have the cognitive awareness to make sure they're warm and healthy. It's not like there's a "crazy line" and the second you cross it you have no sense of your own well-being and suddenly can no longer hear people who aren't insane. The point is the game is all from the perspective of the main character. Insanity is unpredictable and irrational- there is a possibility the main character is crazy and things seem rational to us because we are getting the POV of a crazy person which would seem like normal steps to take for him. This game is open to interpretation and I don't think you're presenting strong enough evidence to push for 1 ending being correct over the other possible ending.
I'm pretty sure in this game, noone is infected or anything of the sort. What is happening is that the main guy is going insane for some reason, beliving they or himself are infected. He hanged himself. He turned off the oven. He imagined they were fighting over the door, but actaully just one guy's arm got stuck in the door. He thought he saw something in their faces, and the armbands only encoruaged his dillusion. And the reason why the others wanted to get to him so much was because they were worried he'd hurt or kill himself. The "take him for processing" part basicly is about prepairing him for autopsy or something of the sort. You hear the disapointment but also relief in the voice. It's cause the stress situation is over and well... they failed. So might as well just accept the fact he's dead now.
I call BS. His child wouldn't say 'take him for processing'. A child especially. In the "kys ending" you are not infected, all the others are. In the "Kill Ben" ending you're the one who isn't infected.
@@f4fphantomii468 First of all, 5 year olds say things like that, and other creepy things ALL the time, secondly, not a child, the grown son of James is what Ben is. Not a child, but a kid. Jame's kid. I might have gotten the words 'Child' and 'Kid' mixed up. One means someone who is, well the legal definition of an adult is 18, anywasy, one of the words means someone under 18, and one of them means under 18, but can also mean over 18, becasue it is the child of someone. Yes.
The only thing that is most interesting is the way the body is positioned. Maybe you WERE infected and they intended to get you out to help you but it went too far and you kill yourself. YOU are dead but what's inside you isn't and THAT'S what they want to process. Considering you and your wife were researchers/scientists and they brought your son there, it's logical that he is as well. He probably was entirely up to speed on the entire situation and was hoping if he calmed you down you'd come willingly. I imagine you end up shot at the start because you had attacked someone already and they were defending themselves or worse, someone else who was infected attacked you first.
This one time at band camp in the hallway my friend looked over at this guy and said what the hell are you doing and then our director walked by and said watch your damn language
Sounds like me with my kids. Haha. I think it's a parent thing in general, as my mother is the same way. As was my grandfather. (My grandmother gasps if you use any curse words in front of her. Lmao)
So this game has two stories that are presented to you based on what ending you choose. James Turner believes throughout the game that the armbands are used to slow the infection and are only used by people that are infected. If you choose the shoot yourself, Ben will say "take him in for processing." What this means is that Ben is taking him the body to be tested and see what this infection does, meaning that you were right all along and everyone else was infected. In this ending James' theory about the armbands is correct. If you choose to shoot Ben, James will notice the armband and immediately jump to the conclusion that Ben is infected. The post-credit scene in this ending is a note that explains that the armbands are radiation monitors and are required to be worn, and James was the only one not wearing the armband. My theory is that in this ending there was some kind of radiation outbreak and James refused to wear the armband, which caused him to get infected but he didn't know. This radiation infection then gave him delusions that everyone who wore the armband was infected and he need to kill them all, when in reality he was the only infected one
I don't think it's the same thing. The thing kills you and is able to shapeshift into whatever it kills right? Since the protag isn't the thing and *is* infected it is not in fact the thing.
@@A_Black_Sheep94 It's not the same thing. It's clearly inspired by it, though, which isn't saying much. Lots of games take inspiration from other works.
Could you have possibly put the arm band on after you take it off the severed arm? Could you have saved your decade's worth of research? Maybe by trying to open the door while it was cold, or for looking for something else as kindling? It even said that there was already kindling in the furnace before you lit it. Finally, another option for the arms trying to get in, other than "they're infected" or the "he's infected let's get him to keep him from killing others," is that, simply, they were cold. They're outside in Antarctica--he's inside with a hot furnace.
It says it has fuel, but it probably means it only has "middle stage" fuel. You can't light a wooden log with a lighter, you'd have to put smaller branches under it that make a "early stage" fuel, light them to make a fire large enough to start burning the "middle stage" fuel.
StrangeDuckling If you were cold and a man isn’t letting you in, he falls asleep for a while your probably about to freeze to death, so they got desperate and tried to shove the knife in between the door to stop him from closing it.
I wondered this as well and couldn't find an answer in the comments, so I downloaded it to try it myself - the answer is that you cannot use the armband on yourself at all - the game doesn't give you that option. There's a walkthrough that comes with the download and it confirms that the way Mark played is the only way to play.
when i first saw the thing i stayed away from dogs for months, that, and i distrusted the food my parents gave me because i thought they might have contaminated it trying to get me.
The hanging part was so creepy and ominous! The art style in this game is fucking amazing. Including the voice acting, he kinda sounded like a fellow Australian as well. I like this game.
I personally think that only the main guy was affected. He killed the guy and that's why they we're trying desperately to get in because they didn't want him to hurt anyone else or himself.
DracoHandsome They attacked him because he killed Wilkins and probably Kathy and he needed to be put down before he hurt anyone else, and they had bullets in case something were to go wrong.
what if he killed his wife by accident then start going insane when his mind tried to make an excuse for his crime and started believing people were infected , i think he was being ... violent before or starting to lose his mind because his son said mom has called before .. probably talked to him about his father and then he saying it wasnt your fault it was an accident buttt ..... why wouldnt his son tell him why he wears that band and who is doctor parker
This is a really great game it seems. The voice acting is amazing, letting you feel the character's struggle just to survive. I loved how the ending worked especially. It's an excellent strong ending. It has all the right elements of mystery and vagueness without sounding cliché. Both endings leave the audience with different feelings and emotions: one gives you a haunting, looming sense of dread (second for Mark), while the leaves you terribly guilt-ridden and questioning of your character's sanity (first for Mark). At least, that is the way the endings are sketched out, and I must say that while it didn't freak me out, this game very much intrigued me and gave me a great time watching Mark play it. I need to go find this game now, just to play it myself.
That's the thing about games. You automatically assume you're the good guy. When you could be insane, you could think you're doing the right thing, when it's terrible.
except he IS the good guy in this game... This is just a theory but I believe the armbands are either the source of the infection (the note at the end used to get them to wear them) or they are something this "infection" needs it's host to wear. The first ending is just designed in a way that would make you feel wrong if you hadn't seen the suicide ending already. And don't even say the "processing" was analyzing what made him go crazy because that scene was a dry one line, the son didn't even make a peep of reaction to his own father's suicide.
i keep imagining him like bear grylls. when hes hanging hes just like "seems that we've got ourselves in a bit of a sticky situation here, luckily i can give you a few tips and tricks to get out of this scenario as fit as a fiddle."
Oh I get it. This disease screws with your mind, causing paranoia and/or psychosis, ending in you either going suicidal or murderous. That's why he ended up hanging by the neck as well as shutting down the heater on himself. Either way, you are screwed in the end, as it becomes impossible for others to negotiate with you. Really terrifying subject.
To sum up the story as I see it, and provide evidence of my explanation. Warning: Spoilers. The main character, a Mycologist by the name Dr.James Turner, has been stranded at an antarctic research station. A Mycologist researches a specific branch of biology, fungi. However, as we are aware of, somethings terribly wrong. We are presented with a myriad of characters, but aren't given many details on who they are beyond immediate family and names. We do know that Dr.Turner has a family, a wife and a son. The wife was with him while they were researching ancient fungal organisms. First, everyone in the area is infected. There's no working around that, it's the only reasonable explanation, anyone who may not be infected, was by the end. For starters, the first scene in which the infection clearly shows with Dr.Turner is almost immediately after exposure to the fungi stored in the fridge, which had released spores into the air, something he most certainly inhaled. One can reason that the spores are essentially seeds and have not grown yet, but they can certainly still induce chemical reactions on the body, as a spore or fungi. The second reason to this is the behaviors of everyone else in the area, Dr.Turner had incorrectly assumed that anyone wearing the arm bands was likely infected, they served a different purpose however, monitoring radiation. However, everyone was infected, their attempts at constantly getting in, the mob at the door with the knife. They very clearly meant harm. Third, the dead body in the end of the room. Either killed, or forced into suicide. We know he had to have been infected and failed to fight it off. Dr.Turner repeated tried to kill himself, and in one possible ending DID kill himself. Similarly, it's not beyond reason that Wilkins, the dead body, had ultimately shot himself, and in attempts to fight it off, misfired into the radio. Another possible reason being that, Dr.Turner may have been infected before the entire scenario, and he himself had fired the gun at Wilkins. As this infection does seem to affect the memories of it's victims. Evidence for this being the random remembrance of his wife's laughter during the radio scene. So we know everyone's infected, but why does that explain why Dr.Turner is the only one trying to kill himself, while the others seem fine, for the most part. My best theory is that they had already succumbed to the infection mentally, and were not needed to kill, or they had perished, and were "Processed." In either scenario, they would be working against Dr.Turner, trying to confuse him into believing they were his friends, and only wanted to help him. Ultimately, this fungi reach's a sentient level of control once it gains control of a person, and seeks to spread in any way possible. It contributes to a story in which, regardless of your end choice, you can not win. You can't fight against something that's already won. The infection will inevitably take hold of Dr.Turner, he will not be able to get help, and regardless of whether he kills his son, his own fate has been sealed, regardless of whether it was sealed the moment he inhaled the spores, or earlier on.
4:10 "Nothing human out there for a thousand Ks" I guess that "Ks" means "kilometers" (a proper abbreviation would be km, though) :) 17:50 "Take him for processing". Peridium is "the covering of the spore-bearing organ in many fungi", so I guess this might have been a Resident Evil 7 kind of situation (in which they were developing a fungus that could be used as a bioweapon, and testing it on people). That kind of mind-controlling fungus (the genus _Ophiocordyceps_, which has species that can parasite ants and spiders) actually exists in real life, and that's what inspired the fungus on "The Last of Us" (afaik).
prairiepanda Interesting, now I'm wondering if that's something that came from British English (I don't know if they also use that kind of abbreviation) or if it developed independently in Canada and Australia :)
@@unoriginalityismyspecialty5166 I also saw it when I was a kid. It's pretty terrifying that it made me stay away from our dogs for a month or so. But then the cuteness of dogs made it go away
Just being in the Arctic could have done it on its own -- it's known to take a toll on the mental health of Arctic researchers, especially during the winter.
TheVerminGod that's what I'm thinking but then why would they throw themselves at the door? Why would he have the gut wound? Questions questions questions!
There was probably a struggle after he began to lose his mind. Believing that everyone was infected, he lashed out, leaving him wounded and many of his coworkers dead by his own hands. That's my theory.
If you think about it, you could have been controoled from the start and the only times you were actually thinking clearly without the influence of the infection was when you began to see in red, you see what you actually look like and what is acually happening around you. When the world is in colour you are burning your research, imagining peoples arms as wormlike and acting strange in general. Furthermore, your friend that is dead in the lab may have shot you when he realised you were infected but you took the gun and shot him, and the infection then made you believe he and everyone else was infected. Finally, this would explain why your son is saying your wifes death is not your fault, as he was being influenced by the infection, also explaining why his friend outside was yelling and trying to kill him and why they said "take him for processing" to understand the illness, at least this is what i believe. :)

This might be one of my favorite short horror games of all time and probably one of my favorite story’s in general. It’s really a shame that it’s so short but it also makes it so brilliant.
they all came in (the arms I mean!) because either they were so desperately trying to save him from himself (that explanation is bull shit though tbh!) or he was seeing things, because when he went back out they didn't speak to him as if he had just cut someones dame arm off! no they talked to him as if he was a suicidal man. when they said "take him in for processing" I think they mean the infection, the radiation and the infection were two different things I believe. the dead guy on the floor might have been infected to and so he took his own life! the infection makes you have suicidal thoughts and then the radiation was causing him to go crazy, his suspicions towards everyone else sounded as if he didn't think they were who they were, he was thinking something had taken them over and he was the only REAL person! when actually it was him going crazy. IDK if that's at all true though of course! just a theory, and I hope it made SOME sense.
The possibility of finding the knife on the ground is possible or from the corpse. The people out there didn't even react to the arm, like it was nonexistent.
When the narrator started talking damn Edit: did some research. the narrator is Adrian Vaughan, and guess who else he voices? The drug dealer in paradigm. Sorry, not a drug dealer
Really well made 'point'n'click' game! The story was very interesting, and I am really hoping to see a sequel :D Also Mark, congratz on 18 mil subs! The community keeps on growing and growing, it's amazing to see! But what is more amazing is that you are still very much Markiplier from all those years back! - Sure you've changed a bit over the years, we all change as time goes by! But personally, I can only say you've become a better youtuber, and a really fun guy to watch for all these years! It's been amazing seeing you progress! But most astounding is that even after all these years, you still have me excited, whenever there are new videos! Keep up the good work, I'll definitely see YOU, in the next video!
Theory. His wife was killed and it drove him sort of insane thinking that there was this thing and then he became infected by fungus and went completely mental. Similar to bird box but not but trying to kill yourself but involuntarily. But by inhaling this fungus his mind was in so much pain it was trying everything to kill itself. The arms were a hallucination. And in the end when you can either kill ben or james. It's still his mind trying to kill itself but then also his insanity wanting to kill his son because he was "infected". This is similiar to the thing but the backstory may be different. After math of watching/ hearing his wife died to certain people and the dude goes mental. Possibility is that he killed wilkens but didn't know or wilkens couldn't stand to see james like that and offed himself. The bracelets looked like some type of radiation bracelet or something. Probably some type of identification. James was the only insane one.
I wonder what would've happened if you tried to put on the armband when you got it after cutting off the arms but before you opened the door again. If you try this and something happens, can you make another video about it?
Love the squeaky voice Mark gets whe realization and shock comes across him. :P I will say, a cool game with some good voice acting, especially for a little pixel game to have this voice acting and such. :) Keep up the creativity, Devs. :) And keep up the fun, Mark. :) God bless yours and you! :)
Mike Scarecrow The Protype You can't get subs by begging. People who get subs deserve them because of good content. Not replying to a random comment or asking on a popular video. Lonely loser
The fungus gives you a disease that causes you to be suicidal and see things. For example, James hung himself and turned off the heater as if he didn't know he was doing it. I also think that the part where all the arms come through the door struggling to get in was a hallucination. That dead guy getting up against the wall? He was also infected. Then he killed himself. The hole in James gut was a previous attempt to unknowingly kill himself. Understand?
It said they were moving as one, so I think they would have a hive mind. If that is the case then you wouldn't be able to trick them into thinking you were one of them.
Everyone making theories is fun indeed! But ultimately there is no right answer except from the creator themselves, which tends to be why I avoid these ambiguous ending games- cause whats the point in wondering if you'll never get to really know the answer? Espcially if both endings are bad either way. Regardless of my personal preferences, this was a great game!! :D The voice acting WAS SO GOOD. SO GOOD.
Well, that's one way to look at it, but in truth the ending can be whatever you want it to be, there's nothing saying you can't believe different than the creator, you know, like your own little head canon. :3 And since the creator hasn't said anything, you just gotta believe what you think is most interesting.
Are you gonna end up being the bad guy all along? Edit: Okay, so now having finished watching it, looks like they may have made it so that if u kill ur self then your son and other guy were alien, however, if u kill your son then it turns out to be that you're the alien or whatever it is, so u feel like shit both ways basically, then again, it could just be that no matter what they are not human all along, either choice it's just that they don't give u the info at end of killing them, maybe so u wanna play again cause if u kill them first and they say they alien, then maybe u won't play other choice, cause u already think u know killing them is right choice
IMO if there was a deeper message, it would be that the player, who controls the character and decides its fate is the one who is the "alien" here. I mean.. you are the one making decisions, not the main character.
The endings aren't mutually exclusive. Just because the armbands had nothing to do with anything doesn't mean the crew were or were not infected with something alien.
Congrats for hitting 18 million mark. You've come a long way.I can't say I've been here really long,But it's been a pleasure to watch you grow.I hope to see you grow more in the future.Congrats,mark.

This is probably the most wrong theory about it. But whatever, this game could have many meanings anyways.
Yes.
@@f4fphantomii468 Why F2? Why not K4?
The only thing that is most interesting is the way the body is positioned. Maybe you WERE infected and they intended to get you out to help you but it went too far and you kill yourself. YOU are dead but what's inside you isn't and THAT'S what they want to process. Considering you and your wife were researchers/scientists and they brought your son there, it's logical that he is as well. He probably was entirely up to speed on the entire situation and was hoping if he calmed you down you'd come willingly. I imagine you end up shot at the start because you had attacked someone already and they were defending themselves or worse, someone else who was infected attacked you first.
Watch your language?

Did I just hear that coming out of Markiplier's mouth?

This game needs a sequel.
What is it called? I want to look it up!
ShinePaw101 I think it's called alluvium on game jolt
It doesn't look like a sequel, it's just by the same guys
this game needs a the rest of this game
could be the drifter, since i noticed there's a same dialogue from this game

Watch John Carpenter's "The Thing" or give "Who goes there?" by James W. Campbell a read.
The arms trying to desperately get in because you turned off the furnace, aka, nearly killed everybody.
Six months late, but one of the arms reaching in from outside was wielding a knife, presumably attempting to kill.
Finding kindling for a furnace, in a really snowy place while already freezing, not the greatest idea.
my dad took me to see the thing when I was 8 and I did not trust anyone for like a week
when i first saw the thing i stayed away from dogs for months, that, and i distrusted the food my parents gave me because i thought they might have contaminated it trying to get me.

what "the thing"?
is it a movie of some sorts???
The thing is an old horror movie about an alien that progressively infects a crew of people in Antarctica, as well as their dogs, it's quite horrific.

I like how the character is narrating every move and thought he has while he has a hole in is stomach.
Reminded me a bit of Bastion.
If I was shot in the stomach, my thoughts: FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK! THIS HURTS SO FUCKING MUCH!
I personally think that only the main guy was affected. He killed the guy and that's why they we're trying desperately to get in because they didn't want him to hurt anyone else or himself.
Vanessa that is probably the case
Then why did they attack him with a real knife that he used to get real bullets?

No. This is a shit game. This is art only.
The voice acting is phenomenal in this, that guy sounds beautiful.

Perception is a hell of a drug.

Little Nightmares...
except he IS the good guy in this game...
Tee IsMe Yeah! Like skyrim all over agian...
i keep imagining him like bear grylls. when hes hanging hes just like "seems that we've got ourselves in a bit of a sticky situation here, luckily i can give you a few tips and tricks to get out of this scenario as fit as a fiddle."

4:10 "Nothing human out there for a thousand Ks" I guess that "Ks" means "kilometers" (a proper abbreviation would be km, though) :)
17:50 "Take him for processing".
Pedro Stormrage This game is made by Aussies and in Australia is a popular slang for K's
Jordan McDowall So in Australia "K's" is used as an informal abbreviation of kilometers? I had no idea, thanks for pointing that out :)
Pedro Stormrage no problem, happy to help
In Canada we also sometimes say "Ks" or "clicks" just because "kilometers" is too long
prairiepanda Interesting, now I'm wondering if that's something that came from British English (I don't know if they also use that kind of abbreviation) or if it developed independently in Canada and Australia :)

The narrator was probably losing his mind because of too much radiation
Just being in the Arctic could have done it on its own -- it's known to take a toll on the mental health of Arctic researchers, especially during the winter.
TheVerminGod that's what I'm thinking but then why would they throw themselves at the door? Why would he have the gut wound? Questions questions questions!
There was probably a struggle after he began to lose his mind. Believing that everyone was infected, he lashed out, leaving him wounded and many of his coworkers dead by his own hands. That's my theory.
One question bothers me. What is that strange accent? Is he Canadian? Or English?
Студия КвС Australian
Also how do i edit my comment i realise i made a spelling error

This might be one of my favorite short horror games of all time and probably one of my favorite story’s in general. It’s really a shame that it’s so short but it also makes it so brilliant.
Waste of time.
Lol when the subtitles say "We get it dude, you're in pain", because the main character's drama level is 100. Moments I live for😂😂😂
they all came in (the arms I mean!) because either they were so desperately trying to save him from himself (that explanation is bull shit though tbh!) or he was seeing things, because when he went back out they didn't speak to him as if he had just cut someones dame arm off! no they talked to him as if he was a suicidal man.
when they said "take him in for processing" I think they mean the infection, the radiation and the infection were two different things I believe. the dead guy on the floor might have been infected to and so he took his own life! the infection makes you have suicidal thoughts and then the radiation was causing him to go crazy, his suspicions towards everyone else sounded as if he didn't think they were who they were, he was thinking something had taken them over and he was the only REAL person! when actually it was him going crazy.
IDK if that's at all true though of course! just a theory, and I hope it made SOME sense.
The arms can't have been in his head, because he gets a real knife from it that he uses to get bullets for the gun.
+DracoHandsome oh true, true. I'll have to rethink my theory now! XD
This.
This is beautiful.
The possibility of finding the knife on the ground is possible or from the corpse. The people out there didn't even react to the arm, like it was nonexistent.
But you shot him, that's why you're out of ammo

Understand?

Everyone making theories is fun indeed! But ultimately there is no right answer except from the creator themselves, which tends to be why I avoid these ambiguous ending games- cause whats the point in wondering if you'll never get to really know the answer? Espcially if both endings are bad either way.
Regardless of my personal preferences, this was a great game!! :D The voice acting WAS SO GOOD. SO GOOD.
Well, that's one way to look at it, but in truth the ending can be whatever you want it to be, there's nothing saying you can't believe different than the creator, you know, like your own little head canon. :3
And since the creator hasn't said anything, you just gotta believe what you think is most interesting.
But you get to make your own Ending based on what happened in the game before or something like that
Mark: "Watch your language!"
That's a little ironic.
What if he didn't take the bullets tho

The endings aren't mutually exclusive. Just because the armbands had nothing to do with anything doesn't mean the crew were or were not infected with something alien.
I know this is nitpicking, but there's nothing about aliens or whatever, it's about some sort of infectious fungi.
lol, a "K" is a kilometre. We're very lazy speakers
