I think ive an idea whats going on here, but its a tad depressing to say the least
The game says you can turn an entity into data...i think that happened to Her. The game claims she goes by many names, and the "Her" in the You Shouldnt Be Here room, tied up in webs like that, has a face so similar to White Face. She even has the same wound across her eye like whiteface does, same spot and all
I feel like shes a suicide victim. She killed herself, tried to hang herself and it worked. When the player shoots her, and the camera moves to reveal whiteface shot her...it isnt her being shot down by HIM...its a simple metaphor. For the fact that she killed herself, because they are one in the same entity. In her desperation for escape life, her soul wound up clinging to this game, locking itself away in there forever to escape the turmoil and sadness, the lady in the picture being her herself, the true ending showing the grave next to the noose and chair confirming that she did die to hanging...shes scared....shes depressed...and now she has such power. She can do anything she wants to, anything at all! She was likely young, given she doesnt try at first to harm you, just scare you, play with you, have some fun, even letting you change her to see what may happen, change her to the closest thing to her old form again...but once she finds out your idea...your goal of killing her...its far to late to stop you...and she becomes powerless again. She becomes desperate to show you something and then begs you to just take the flower, let her reset the game back to the very beginning and keep playing with one of the first humans in who knows how long shes found again! She had no power before but now she will stop you, she must stop you...but shes scared...white face, her, Ivan, whichever...is afraid...and when it comes down to it, this curse...is also her only form of life left. She just wanted a bit longer to stare at you, remember what being human was like...but eventually, you take her heart and delete it...change it...whatever...and remove her entirely, and with Her gone, her influence is taken away, the mixed and messed up gameworld she made for herself to live in is revealed. You walked into her new home, and killed her off, granted her a second death, and while she may have said it was a curse...was it really that bad? It was still a life none the less, one far better then the one she had before if that prior one drove her to suicide!....right?
The only thing this doesnt explain is who is helping you through it on the other notes in the game files, but i think it might just be her family...they know that your here trying to get to her, to free her. Thats why you get messages explaining the truth, trying to help you get through to her...and when you finally do, you finally put her soul to rest, finally put her fears at ease once and for all...
This might not be true, but this is how i interpreted it, with all the imagery of hanging and the similar faces of Whiteface and Her and the girl in the first photo, this is the best i got. Feel free to critique it should you find this comment burred under the as of writing this 11,507 other comments

Now, this is an excellent theory! But there's one thing it doesn't explain- why they committed suicide in the first place.
But I have an answer.
Now, there's a lot of evidence to say that White Face, Ivan Zanotti, and HER are all names for the same entity. However, this doesn't explain some things.
Why do they go by HER at one point, but HE in the Game HEnded achievement? Why are they named Ivan Zanotti, even though they appear female?
I think Ivan was transgender.
There's also the statistic that depression, anxiety, and other mental disorders that can lead to suicide, are much more common in the LGBTQ+ community.
I don't have an explanation for _why_ they developed whatever made them commit suicide, but that's my theory.

The game might be about an emotionally abusive relationship. White face wanted to leave the relationship they had with 'her', where 'her' became this scary figure in white face's life. White face wants to leave while 'her' is trying to keep white face and convince them to stay with 'her' by saying things like I'm yours and manipulating them by playing the victim. Saying things like I want to stay longer with you and my heart is yours. After a while of being manipulated to stay in this unhealthy relationship white face decides to fully cut it off acting as if she was dead to them (hence the reason why they shoot her in the game). That's when 'her' becomes really hostile towards white face convincing them that their the monster in the relationship by saying that they 'dont deserve to be touched' and that they 'broke their heart' and other things like that. White face starts to believe the things she says and sees themself as a monster that deserves to die. After awhile White Face heavily believes that they are this unrecognizable monster and decides to give this monster a name 'white face'. After awhile 'her' gives up on trying with white face and decides to leave their life completely, white face feels their life is brigter without 'her' in it (though it may still hurt) White Face hasn't fully healed by the end of the game (when you visit her's 'grave' you can still see the chair and noose) and they are still struggling with suicidal thoughts, but everything seems better for white face without 'her' in it.

Yknow, its kind of sad, the ending. It’s the first time I’ve felt honest sympathy for a non-existent character. He didn’t want the game to end, because that’s all it was to him, just a fun little game he was playing with his only friend, you, the player. The glitchfest at the end was him panicking, and lashing out, he was afraid of the end, he didn’t want to die. And by deleting his heart, you did so. It’s a real shame, you’ve gotta feel bad for whiteface.

So, from what I can tell, the story basically is that HER died and White Face committed suicide due to grief, but they lived on via the whole entire "entity into a program thingy". By you ending the game, you're ending the program, thus officially killing them.

What I think happened: White face, for some reason, shot and killed her and hung himself out of guilt. The reason he can't show his heart is because of the grief and fear. The reason he says I'm scared is because of all the fear he got from killing her. We play the game in the hospital, which is what explains all the beds lined up and the way to the station. Its also why her grave is just outside. I also think the photo on the wall is of her.

This was (and still is) one of my favorite horror game that I ever played, it was great remembering that deep-rooted fear that this game provokes. By the way, I felt amazing when I remembered, even having passed so much time, that when Mark was in the parking lot (the "let's play tag" minigame) and when he died he said: "He's gonna get me!" which is exactly what he said on his previous playthrough of this game, almost with the same tone as last time.
At the "escape, close here" part you see a cage that seems to have a noose and a chair in it that's surrounded by darkness. If you remember, that's a perfect description of White Face's room. The game is hinting at the fact that HER has been keeping White Face as a prisoner. My only theory to this is is that HER is using White Face to trap people, so she can use them in some way(still not sure, but maybe to even distract people from her existence and make it seem like White Face is the bad person, so basically using him as a decoy). The fact that you can escape HER at White Face's cage motions towards the theory that he's helping us. White Face isn't the bad one, he's the one helping us in the game files, so we can get rid of HER and free him.
No white face and her are the same tho, this is proven in the monolouge from her at the grave area.

Please Thumbs Up so others can see (I love making theories)
So, at the end of this game you notice the chair next to the grave, that’s supposed to be HER and White Face finally together happily because the curse is broken. I BELIEVE the curse is the infatuation he has with you, the curse makes him control you to kill HER. If she is out of the way then you’re all his and his alone. I also have a secondary opinion that she is the one trying to help you release her because there was no love between them and the realization of White Face killing her may transform him to a state of being “scared” knowing he was finally alone and White Face caused this all to himself.
Back on my first opinion, the infatuation with You (hence why the Y is capitalized) is because White Face falls for you as soon as you give him the flower because you showed him you were obedient and he liked that about you. There’s a chance he couldn’t control HER (which might be why she never has a name at all) and wanted to remove her when you came along.
The “curse” that White Face is mentioning in this scenario is the curse that he will forever be alone, which will put him in a state of totaling behind scared, this is why he shows you his heart at the ending. He’s trying to show you he can change, that his heart is yours to have if you just let him live. This also is why there are so many jump scares at the end of the game, White Face is panicking, he knows it’s coming and he’s trying to keep control of you to keep you obedient to him so you don’t delete him. Technically speaking, this is OLD SCHOOL Monika from DDLC. (Never played it, watched it? Highly recommend it). Last, but not least, when you’re given a final choice, it’s the final test of your loyalty, give White Face the flower and it all begins again, try to Exit and the world comes crashing down.
Short version? White Face is scared to be alone in his world, failed to control HER, wanted to keep control of you, you became strong and White Face couldn’t handle your independence, tried to scare you into submission, you gave him freedom to die alongside HER at the grave.

(This was a little poetic adaptation of my understanding of the game. I remember watching the first walkthrough 6 years ago, and it brings me tears of joy seeing it now. Mark, thank you for bringing back this nostalgia, and I hope you continue to be such an amazing human being.)

This game… hit differently for me. Most of the time with horror games, it’s a whole ordeal, and when you reach the end it’s normally done in triumph, but instead the ending seems sad. While the world may have been twisted, in the end the entity within the game mainly seemed interested in playing. It knows it’s in a game, and yet it doesn’t actually try to harm you. Towards the end when you choose the door they initially throw a fit, at first solidifying your resolve to end it, but then they just seem to break down. They’re scared. They don’t want to die. They don’t want it to end, this world that they shared with you, but in the end you kill them, and the world after is empty. The maps are still there, but no matter where you go each area seems empty, because they’re not there anymore. You are left alone in an empty world, accompanied only by a lingering sense of loneliness for which you are solely responsible for. I know there’s a lot of theories, and this is more just a summary of already known events, but it just really stuck out for me.
The achievement you get for this ending really sums the whole space up. It's pure loneliness.

So here's my hot take on the story: There is only one entity. White Face and HER are literally the same person. They even say so in the files (55:41 "As HER, to talk was not my thing. I just wanted to entertain you. _Maybe I should go back, or change again._ You changed me and now _I'm not scared_) In the beginning they say they go by many names, and obviously we have to input said names ("White Face" and "HER"). When the "White Face" segment first ends, they tell you at the end that "HER" is one of _their_ names.
Wherein White Face watched from a distance, and would laugh and taunt you, as HER, they chose to be more dramatic (in a sense), not laughing when you do things, quietly chasing you in the phonograph maze, literally standing dramatically on a balcony facing away from you. As HER, they even force you to face off against them, like some sort of finale. After that? The Entity takes a hands off approach.
You are dropped in a store. There is nothing antagonizing you. You are the only one actively doing anything. Anything the entity provides you is given in between resets, where you cannot see them. It's like they're taking a moment to think.
After that, they revert back to White Face, returning to their original form with the same kind of horror; they chase you down, taunt you from a distance, etc. It's in this form they beg you to give them the flower, asking you to do it all over again.
Anyways that's my thoughts sorry it's messy

I didn’t put this together until now, but I’m pretty sure this game is about murder and suicide.
This guy and his lover/friend/whoever were happy. Then she, or HER, ‘betrayed’ him. And whiteface, you, thought she was going to leave forever. You became unstable and decided to shoot her and bury her so she could always be close. But then you became insane without HER, and slowly lost your mind. At the very end of the game it’s just a normal house, but in your eyes it was a prison of insanity. The WHITEFACE that chased you was your guilt that haunted and tormented you. HER that chased you was your version of the one you killed hating you for what you did. The guilt caught up with you and you decided to end it all. This is your purgatory and at the end was peace.
Anyways, that’s just my take on it.

I might know. But I've never played it, so this is only my best guess: I think the meaning of this game is to show the player causes and effects of one's emotions. At the very beginning of the game it is sort of gloomy, gray, and simple. Then there is the flower. The flower is a symbol of care, mercy, and life; the only thing "White Face" wanted from you at the start and end of the game. "HER" on the other hand, wants revenge for something that had happened to herself: the scene where you appeared to be "White Face" all along, shooting "HER" 6 times. But there is something more. Time. Time is used all around the game, and patents as well. Along with secret coding. You have to take your time with the different puzzles, while also discovering a secret path in the labyrinth. The statues and the hanging lady - assumed to be "HER" - are the representations and manifestations of "HER." Yet we have two different spirits, both faces similarly alike; yet they could also be two halves of "HER." As I looked over the 6 shots scene, I saw the resemblance of their faces, and no doubt that "White Face" and "HER" are the same person; the two halves fighting for emotional and mental dominance. In one of the codes, it suggests "White Face" has two names, that and "HER." Both leading to two of the three endings. In one of the endings it shows both "The Noose" and the hole in the same place. Both shown in the "Peek-a-boo" and "Peek-a-two" Easter eggs. They are connected because one half of it wishes to die peacefully by its own inflictions, the other in the depths of hell. "White Face" is the good half, "HER" is the evil half. If the flower is forgotten "White Face" becomes saddened and angered; therefore becoming "HER," leaving itself to burn and suffer in hell for all eternity; taking you with it. If given the flower, you have kept your promise of giving care, mercy, life, and also love to "White Face" setting it free by it's own means of suicide. In the end no one really wins except the player having received either the feeling of being forgiven and trusted or the feeling of guilt for what they have done if they refused to bring the flower.

I adore the sound design in this game. The atmosphere is so so quiet, and whenever there is a sound effect, it's loud and abrupt. It just makes everything so much more unnerving and unpredictable.

I wanted to let this thought out for a while but didn't know how to until I realized I can just kinda comment it.
Honestly, call me weird if you want, but I actually like 'HER' a lot, just the way she is in general. Besides when she tells you to be quiet, which is slightly hostile, she doesn't really ever directly hurt you, at times it even feels like she wants to help you out. She openly tells you she's yours, tell you to share her, play with her and feed her, though I'm not sure what the feed thing is, maybe she just really wants to be yours.
Even her sprite - in the painting, when it says it's 'HER' - looks nice, in my opinion. It's kind of cute.
If anything, I wish there was an alternate ending, an option where you get to pick to actually stay with them and have some sort of 'bad' end, at least bad on other standards, where you can launch the game again at any time and HER and/or White Face are there with you, kind of just... there. Maybe a few more things to do, maybe secrets to collect, or even just dialogue. Or just them being there, just being there with you for a little bit longer, maybe unlock a wallpaper of them, or just anything in general. Even just a text file saying "I'm with you now. As long as you don't delete this file, I'll always be there besides you, watching you. Thank you for not getting rid of me." or something like that.

If you think about it, there literally no threat from the, HER is just playing gently and White Face never really hurts you or says something along the lines of "I'm going to kill you if you lose!", He is just playing with you, like a game, and he thinks that you're playing with him willingly and that both enjoy it -from his perspective at least- c'mon, he even begs to you to not get rid of him! and if you CHOOSE to give him the flower, he *smiles* happily to you (not his normal creepy smile. but an actual kinda cute smile of happiness) and says "I like you" or something like that, is that really evil to you?
I think the Flower ending is the way of letting White Face stay with you, and be together, forever, whenever you turn on your computer, he will be there, like a little buddy, making you company for when you're alone, or when not

DevCreations - YoureTrashIdiot DDLC really isn’t comparable to imscared in the first place. The former is a visual novel with some meta horror. The latter is a 3D game with meta horror and puzzles, and uses game files directly for puzzles and clues while game files are mostly an add-on for DDLC and don’t amount to any in-game relevance in terms of progressing besides one task where you delete Monika.
DJ V.a.r. Mark has has played like 3 or 4 other games that add stuff into your real world PC
DDLC was overall pretty damn good, but it kinda grew stale in the 2nd part. The peak of the game was easily Sayori's suicide. In comparison, imscared had held you on for the whole time and scared the ever loving shit out of you. It was so hands-off in guiding you that it helped the immersion. Perfect game design.
You like games with interaction with the real world? Try OneShot; it's so meta it is basically real.
Oh I get it now, the game is Imscared and in the beginning “whiteface” said “I’m scared” it was not as obvious but it’s a horror game to make you scared, your whiteface, and “her” was someone else, she changed. The be quiet achievement was whiteface scared of making noise. She said “you” made her think about life, she also said she has many forms, maybe you are one of them and you/her made her think about life so she’s trying to not think about life by killing herself, and she is also trying to stop herself from killing herself because she is trying to cling to life.

I'm so glad other people really appreciate this game! I've been in love with this game ever since I first played the gamejolt version. The steam edition coming out made me the happiest person alive. I really hope that it gains more popularity from this video, but it seems that the game "Baldi' Basics" has taken the spotlight (I honestly do not that game, but if you do it's ok. I don't want to force my opinion upon you).

I think we're dealing with the next Undertale/FNAF, but the only difference is that those games were well made and had a reason to be well known (even if it lead to them being torn to shreds). I've already seen many fan fictions and, to put it lightly, "dirty" pieces of fan art that I won't be able to unsee for Baldi's Basics. I just hope it dies quickly. Most of the reason why I want more people to know about IMSCARED is because I just wish there was more surreal fan art for it.

I don't know how this SPECIFIC game/program is doing it, but I have some ideas. So, take what I say with a grain of salt.
There is a thing in computers to open links in the default browser. Usually we use this as bookmarks to the link from our desktop, but this game is programed to use those same commands to open those links. The game is just another program, so it's calling on windows functions to operate.
The game never technically ACTUALLY closes, it only minimizes itself, which is another command that CAN be programmed into any program. Alt-Tab is often a keyboard shortcut for Windows to change what window has focus, and some games are programmed so that when they lose focus they minimize.
then, modifying files and such, that's also EASY to do within the games own directory. That's how you save games technically, your changing the data in some files to a state that represents what you have done INSIDE the game. This game took that a bit further and decided to use some other functions to allow the game to open another window, like you would with another window in your internet browser, and is scripted to wait until you enter the right data before it allows you back into the 1st window
it's some REALLY clever programming here, and I have NEVER seen a game do this. im pretty impressed with the TINY bit that i have watched of this video as of this writing.
If viruses can trash a computer, games can interact with your desktop for sure
Glad to see you've revisited this now! This was one of the coolest horror games of the past; whilst it's a pixel style game, the usage of filespawning as a horror aspect was one of the coolest concepts in game design, and not many games followed on from it.
Doki Doki Literature Club! actually utilises filespawning in a very similar way; files spawn in the game's folder as a result of events happening in the game, which only furthers the horror aspect.
