  • Cellular data on your iOS devices lets you use the Internet wirelessly without a Wi-Fi connection. Most carriers offer limited data plans for iPhones and cellular iPad models. And most people are on limited data plans so any data used beyond those limits really adds up total monthly costs. This video outlines the most common tips to reduce your cellular data use and cut your monthly mobile bill.

hi everybody Liz from AppleToolBox here
    0:13
like me many of you try to use Wi-Fi whenever you can
    0:17
when connecting your iphone or ipad to the internet but there are times when we
    0:21
just don't have access to Wi-Fi and we have no choice but to connect using our
    0:26
    mobile carriers data plan
    0:29
we all know it's a good idea to keep an eye on our data use
    0:36
but how exactly do we do that in this video I'm going to walk us through some
    0:41
tips on how to track our data and we'll look at changing some settings to limit
    0:47
our cellular data usage so let's get to it
    0:52
first it's really important to see on our device how much data we are actually
    0:58
using so go to settings and select cellular scroll down until you see your
    1:06
    cellular data usage
    1:09
this gives you a real-time picture of your current data use
    1:14
if that number is getting a little too close to your limit
    1:18
there are a few things we can do to limit how your device uses your data .
    1:23
one of the easiest things to do is limit which apps use cellular data stay in the
    1:31
cellular menu and scroll down to the section use cellular data for here you
    1:39
turn on and off each apps ability to connect to cellular data all your apps
    1:46
    are listed
    1:47
so you get to decide by sliding to the right to turn on or sliding to the left
    1:52
to turn off if you're worried about your data use
    1:56
it's a good idea to turn off some of your data hogs like the app store
    2:02
facetime photos maybe even google maps and any other app that you normally use
    2:09
    when only connecting via Wi-Fi
    2:12
another feature to check is Wi-Fi assist this feature connects you automatically
    2:17
to cellular when the Wi-Fi connection is bad
    2:20
you may want to turn this feature off especially if you are nearing your data
    2:26
    limit
    2:26
next let's adjust any push notifications that might use cellular data i really
    2:33
    dislike notifications
    2:35
they interrupt me too much so I tend to have these off to adjust your
    2:41
    notifications
    2:42
go to settings and select notifications at the top of the menu
    2:48
look under notification style and select an appt
    2:52
to turn notifications off slide the allow notification to the left and off
    2:58
position decide which notifications are important to you leave those on
    3:06
turn all the rest off one of the biggest invisible data hogs is background app
    3:13
refresh this feature allows apps to update information automatically even
    3:20
when they are actively running on screen
    3:22
great idea but it uses data and it uses battery
    3:27
not good so we really need to proactively manage this feature
    3:33
let's take a look at what apps are set to refresh
    3:37
i'm guessing some of you will be surprised to see how many third-party
    3:41
apps are refreshing to get there
    3:45
go to settings select general and select background app refresh here we have the
    3:54
choice to either turn this feature completely off for all apps or we can
    4:00
pick and choose which apps for fresh choose whatever works for you take a
    4:06
close look and decide if you really need that app to continually refresh
    4:11
if not turn it off it seems that I am constantly updating apps
    4:18
I don't think a day goes by without the App Store showing some update is
    4:22
    available
    4:23
I love to update my apps but really
    4:27
this should only happen when I'm connected to Wi-Fi so here's a real easy
    4:33
    one
    4:34
go to Settings scroll down to app and iTunes stores and turn cellular data off
    4:43
by sliding to the left and off position
    4:46
    that's it
    4:50
finally if you are leaving your home country or if your carrier charges for
    4:56
    data roaming
    4:57
let's manage your data roaming feature
    5:00
this is pretty straightforward go to settings select cellular and at the top
    5:07
of the menu slide data roaming to the left and our position
    5:15
I hope these tips help you better manage your data plan and avoid those
    5:20
    outrageous overage charges

I have just bought an iPhone, which is why I was looking for this information. On Android you simply create a data usage warning and then a limit at which it stops using data unless you enable it. surely apple could create this function easily.

Bought 100mb data from verizon for international trip. I've noticed the mb'a trickled down each day despite lack of use. THANKYOU--your video gave me three key areas I didn't know about. I thought turning off cellular data would do the job but it didn't. Yay--now maybe my data will actually be able to be used for my trip!

      Hi GamingCheetos,
NO, and that's a perpetual gripe we have as iPhone users! It seems like such a basic thing to have as a feature....maybe next year.

@@Appletoolboxcom 5 years later and still waiting for this seemingly simple feature. Also we have to go through all these steps every time there is an upgrade since this is good practice for battery and data hogs.

Lucky me. Mines $33 for one G. Most of that is “rent” on the phone. If I had four lines I could do $30 for unlimited plus whatever “rent” is.
Maybe it’s time to look around again.

Unfortunately, right now there is no setting in iOS that allows you to stop using data once you reach your limit. Currently, it's a very manual process. This would be a great feature request for the next version of iOS.
To request features go here: www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
Your cellular provider might offer a few options on managing your data like a Carrier app that tracks usage and texts you or alerts you when you reach 75% to 100% of your data limit . Contact your sepcific mobile provider and see if they offer these types of alerts when you reach 75% to 100% of your plan's data limit.
Sorry that there isn't anything more useful right now on iOS.
