An American remake of Troll Hunter wouldn't work anyway as the original is steeped in Norwegian culture. I'd much rather prefer a sequel.
Not unless they explain that the original Viking settlers took trolls with them when they went to Canada and left them there to look after the colony
Just because it's American doesn't mean they'd necessarily be silly enough to set it in America - , it could be Americans visiting the Netherlands - justifying them speaking in English. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo remake stayed in Sweden.
That's not to say I really want a remake, something new would be a better idea, like a Jersey Devil or Squant movie.
Why would trolls be in the Netherlands, though? Trolls are Nordic, not Dutch.

The reason why the cgi looks so good is because they chose really good lighting to mask the fact that it was a cgi monster. Really clever I must admit.
That’s something I’ve seen Corridor Crew point out several times in their VFX Artists React series: properly lighting your CG effects are what really make them good. Kinda like how properly lighting a scene can change the mood of a scene completely
As a Norwegian person, I really, really hope Hollywood doesn't remake Troll Hunter. I've seen the remakes they've made of successful Swedish films, and I have no doubt that a remake of a Norwegian film would be just as crappy, especially since Troll Hunter is so full of references to Norwegian culture and folklore. It just wouldn't make sense to set it in the USA, because trolls are a Nordic fairytale creature and there's a very strong sense of Nordic pride attached to those fairytales. The USA can make movies about Bigfoot or the Wendigo or Jersey Devil or something instead, at least it would make sense to set those in the USA.
The Wendigo is a Canadian legend.
That's not entirely true. Since the legend originated from tribes in The Great Lakes region, this also extends to the U.S. sides of said lakes and don't forget that Lake Michigan is also entirely on the U.S. side of the border. It is likely that in centuries past, The Five Nations had this myth and if I remember correctly, they were located on the Southern side of Lake Ontario, which is also in the U.S.
we don't need an SJW Woke Troll revisionist reimagining/remake of this narrative with safe spaces filled with glitter, candy sprinkles and rainbow scented unicorns or silly/ill-advised attempts to understand the motivations of the trolls or sensitivity training classes demanded of the troll protective advocates of the hunters as trolls would be considered a protected or endangered enchanted species
which is exactly what a hollyweird remake would consist of...militant vegan activist would be delusional troll huggers who go out into the troll preserves to make peaceful contact but are then terrified and shocked when they are attacked and a few are eaten while taking a selfie with the trolls in order to get additional likes on their social media pages

My boyfriend showed me troll hunter like a couple of years ago one night when we were surfing Netflix. That one part in the cave scared the shit out of me lol
that part was one of the few parts that legit gave me nightmares! and as a Norwegian living in one of the places the trolls of this movie resides in, you can imagine how fucking terrified i was. especially during Deer Mating seasons, as Bucks sounds come awfully close to the sound the Jotnar makes...
It's great you chose to do this particular film for your exploring series Cecil. A criminally underrated and unknown movie. Your sub count is climbing strong, so I hope this draws more attention to this flick, also well done man. This channel is going to grow into something huge. Two words that always put me off a movie - ''found footage'' so I gave this one a body swerve and ignored it but one of my buddys kept on and on at me to see it so I eventually gave in. I'm glad he did go on and on about it, it's superb! The effects are fantastic and the overall story is so well done. I'd love to see a sequel but NOT a US remake, they'll have the trolls destroying cities and the hunter will be some musclebound pretty boy who takes them on with a selection of over the top weaponry and martial arts moves!!!

It's actually kind of a funny story: My wife & I were babysitting the 6-year old grandson, who was was really into dinosaurs, bigfoot, etc. We were browsing Netflix for something he would be willing to watch and stumbled on this. We only got about halfway through, then his mother picked him up. AFter they left, my wife looked at me and said, "You know..." And I was like, "Yeah, I kinda want to finish it too." Great movie and lots of fun to watch.

I honestly thought the US remake was way superior.
While it made significant changes to details, it stayed much more true to the essence of the book, that which is the relationship between Eli and Oskar.
I felt that the Swedish adaption tried to force a plot where there originally was none. Its a character driven story, not a plot driven.
So it merely throwing together a string of the novel's key scenes without fleshing out the characters , made it a hot mess.
The Cat Scene which is genuinly tragic in the novel, turns into slapstick comedy in the Swedish film adaption, since we never get to know those characters and learn the context of the situation.
It kind of bothered me, since the author himself wrote much, if not most of the script, and is a play writer by trade. So you figure that he should understand how to present the material in a format with actors.

This movie meant a lot to me, because my Grandma's family is from Norway, but the Norwegian language didn't get passed down past her generation, my Dad doesn't speak it at all, and I never ever hear it outside of Grandma explaining how to say a word or two every once in a long while. Watching Troll Hunter, for me, was the first time I'd heard Norwegian spoken for more than a few sentences, in my whole life. So happy this movie had a US DVD release, I'm so thankful. I wish I could learn Norwegian!!

I'm Norwegian, and I can say that the best thing about Troll Hunter is the nods to local fairy tales and the politics of the time. A Troll Hunter 2, or a similar film combining other parts of Norwegian myths with politics and satire would be excellent!

I really like this movie, the acting and setting is so good that by the end I was almost convinced that trolls are real. Also the humor is so subtle but yet so good.
Beautifully photographed, a cast that was intent on playing it straight, and lore comparable to the Grimm Bros. Films don't get much better.
I own this film on dvd, absolutely enjoyed it! the scenery is amazing, makes you wanna visit Norway.
It's the scenery I watched when I was a kid, living in western Norway, needing a couple of days to travel by car to the north of Norway to visit the family on my mothers side. It's the same distance as if traveling south to Italy, over the Alps, to give a feeling of the vast wilderness distances here. In the winters it's actually not allowed to cross the mountains from west to east, across the mountain plateau, called Hardangervidda, or vice versa (east to west), but cars have to travel in convoys with a snow-plow in the front.
Anyway, the view out the windows in this movie remind me so much of how it was like to sit in the back seat and just watch the enormous mountains, reaching up above 1000 meters, with snow on the peaks in mid summer, and uncontrollable waterfalls coming down everywhere, and in the "warm" season, it's so green, it's so lush, it's like LIFE itself have gotten a paintbrush and splattered colors of life everywhere. It's sensory overload, and I was just sitting in the backseat of the car, watching, as in a trance. I remember once I was given a tray of cherries, but I was so busy looking, that my whole face and all my clothes became red. One of those stories everyone in the family bully me with since I'm the youngest, born as early as 1979.
It's probably the main reason why I wanted so badly to study art. I got a year in a private school in the midst of the fjords and mountains in the middle of south-western Norway, but unfortunately I had such bad grades in everything (except in art) that I was placed in Mechanics studies, because every child at that time was guaranteed to be given a spot on 1 of 3 choices of "collage" study, but I just put Mechanics because I didn't know anything else to put on choice NR.3. So I was bullied even by the teachers...
The point though: The scenery is not given justice even by the highest quality TV and film. If you can afford it, visit the city of Bergen, and use it as a base to visit the western part of Norway. Oslo, in the east of Norway is not worth the attention. Then you can just as well visit Sweden, Denmark, Germany, or any European country, only the east of Norway have no charm at all, just vast fields of wheat and forest of erect pine trees, and you never see the horizon. It just fades into more pine and more wheat, and the sorry city of Oslo and the towns around it, that are young, barely a few hundred years, with no style and nothing to see, except the museums. On the west coast, like with Bergen, the earlier capitol, it have style, very few high rise buildings, but mostly very old buildings in the Hanseatic style, along with the UNESCO protected wharf area, and there's two options to get up to the mountain tops above the city where you can see the whole city, 1000 year old, in front of you, and if you turn your head around, you see pure wilderness, as in the movie Troll Hunter. And we have a unique law here, the "all mans right" to wander in the wilderness. There's nobody that own the wild, and it's probably the only pure wilderness in Europe left. People die every year, if they come from abroad and haven't talked to the locals and taken advice seriously, because above 1000 meters, even in mid-summer, it's summer at one minute, and then it can completely turn around, and you get buried in snow the next minute.
Hope I managed to wet your appetite to travel here. If you are English or American, everyone, except those above 70-80+ can talk English, and also respect people talking English because of memories from WW2.

This is pretty much my favorite B movie. everything is put together so well and makes sense. it is thought trough making it very realistic. you really feel like if trolls would exist, it would be like this. but please watch it in norway spoken language. its better to read subtitles then to listen horrible English voice overs. it ruins a good movie.

This is a movie that has sentimental value to me, one of the first movies I loved as a child, I put this alongside Jaws 2 and Ghostbusters as my holy trinity of childhood classics I saw and was obsessed with around that age, watched Trollhunter on Netflix when I was 9 and picked up a copy at Moviestop around that time.
I really loved Troll Hunter and I also wish it could get a sequel. Watching it made me want to visit Norway because they showed so much of Norways' natural beauty with those breath-taking shots of fjords.
Btw, are we getting closer to exploring Tremors?
This was a surprisingly cool film, I love when films use real mythology from other cultures. It is one of my favorite indie films, definitely a new classic
"from other cultures" excuse me? it was filmed in my home country, Norway, which is where the mythology of these Trolls originated. so it isnt "from other cultures" it is from Norwegian Culture as is lol. i am not angry or mad at you. it just annoyed me a bit seeing as how proud i am of this film and my country, and seeing as my family bloodline can be traced back over 500 years.

Normally I am apathetic about this sort of film, but I have it a chance and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. They really did a great job with what they had.
This movie is amazing i love how the movie treats them more as animals like saying that their mammals and trying to explain why they turn into stone I also love how the movie makes you seem so small compared to the trolls it reminds me of Godzilla (2014) I would love to see a sequel instead of a remake

Sometimes foreign films do not need to be remade.
Need I point out The Grudge, The Ring, etc?
Sometimes quite a bit can be lost in the translation.
Also even the fanciest CGI could never replace charm and good atmosphere, hence why so many of the Hollywood remakes of foreign films (and their own films, but that's a topic for a different discussion) fail, because it's usually quite clear that there wasn't any heart put into it and that it's just a cold cash-grab, an attempt to make an easy buck by taking an already successful script and making a bigger budget American version of it.

i am from Norway and i love this movie. But my favorite "troll" movie is: Thale. That is an amazing movie that GoodBadFlicks should explore.

LOVED this movie, and the way they were all different types and were catalogued and had different properties. I LOVE the variety in movies like this, where each "monster" is really different from the other and therefore not all the same. Makes each encounter more interesting!
I was glad you mentioned the scenery, sometimes I got caught up in how beautiful Norway is, that I forgot to pay attention to what the characters were saying.

I came across this on Netflix one night while I was bored. I fell in love with it. An absolutely amazing film and I highly recommend anyone who hasn't seen it to go watch it. They will pleasantly surprised.

This one is available on Netflix now, at Easter 2024, at least here in Norway.
It did get a limited theatrical release, mainly in independent movie houses in the U.S. Happily got to see it there instead of on DVD.

You're absolutely right, the only sane thing to do is to kill the doomed remake plan & let André make the sequel on his terms in Norway. Still one of the greatest monster movies ever filmed, Trollhunter is legendary!

Remember watching this a few years back. It is one of thw best if not the best found footage film I have ever seen! Really atmospheric and creepy. The CGI was amazing! Really need to watch it again
i grew up near one of the locations this movie is filmed at. Våtedalen in Gloppen Kommune. i am also the last in the line of the Bergheim Family, which is in the entrance to Våtedalen. my family was considered "the Gatekeepers of Våtedalen" in the viking age, seeing as Våtedalen was a sacred ground and was close to a place called Torheim, which many places in norway is called. and the reason for the name Torheim is all because of the norse mythology and belief that it was one the places the Bifrost landed to transport Thor to Midgard, or Earth as it is know as today.
What I love about your channel is that almost all the films you recommend can be bought for peanuts on Amazon marketplace so I can check them out without breaking the bank. And you've got an impressive hit rate so far!
I made my family watch Troll Hunter and Rare Exports a few years ago during Christmas. They were unenthusiastic, but now it's an annual Christmas movie tradition like Christmas Story, Rudolph, and Elf; plus my parents have become fans of Scandinavian films.
This movie was actually in theaters when it came to my state I think? But my class went to see Tron and Narnia instead( I liked tron by the way). I saw it on Netflix afew years ago and I thought it was really good. Though I'm not sure how if I went to Norway a Troll could smell me since I believe in god ( what could he smell the Easter dinner I had months ago=/?).
I think this works even more today because we have so many amateur explorer shows on RUclips, this could easily be remade/have a sequel in that venue.

A remake would involve a studio, this would involve executives who know more than the director and writer(s) about what the movie should be. There would be numerous test screening with cuts and recuts, then a release in 50 theaters with $15.00 worth of publicity, after which it would fail, and the few people who do see it, would destroy it on the internet, thus making a sequel or a directors cut impossible, blaming the director and, regardless of how talented the actors are, the cast, and possibly the writer.
This is why I love inexpensively made Indy films.
This is seriously one of the best monster movies I've ever seen.
Probably the best found footage movie out there. I love the lore they created with the trolls and that agency, it really felt like the casual day of work in a forester's life, this just feels natural.

That’s what made it so unique and it’s clever and it taps into, I think, what a lot of people are realizing nowadays, that so many of the folktales have a basis in history.
When the first trailers emerged I was really curious and after seeing it a couple years back I have to say it's a great movie, one of my favourites, I remember being so absorbed and sucked into the mythos/world they were building with the trolls, it was fascinating and the way the special effects were handled amazed me for the budget, the cave scene with the mountain kings was very tense, I agree with everyone else, it must be views in it's original form, probably one of the few movies where I felt the need to buy the DVD since normally I watch a movie once or twice and I'm done with it but I've watched troll hunter 8+ times sowing it to friends and such, highly recommend.

i’ve known this movie for years and it still hasn’t got what it deserves, this and cloverfield are too found footage movies. Again this movie is a masterpiece and did an amazing job on such a short budget
I really liked this movie. A complete surprise when I ran into it. I still remember many scenes and it's unique style (more than The Hobbit- that's for sure). That says a lot when you remember a small film like this years later.

This film is amazing. I did hate it at first with the way it was shot and the very slow burn but once it got going it didn’t stop.
The CG impressed me a lot when I saw the first trailers. Then it stuck to me for the good atmosphere. Hope the team will achieve what they want to in the future.

Picked this up for a $1 at Dollartree. I am glad I gave it a chance. This is a low budget movie that was actually worth watching. It had a shadow of collasses vibe. This would make a cool video game.
Still one of my favorite episodes of this channel, even in 2019.

I've been into Norway's landscape and culture for a while and a movie bringing trolls to life is just perfect.

I could almost feel the atmosphere in the film, the cold of the snow, the dampness of the rain, the smells of the cave.
That's the feeling of wandering in the wild in Norway for you. Or even driving in a car here on the West coast, with the old 1-lane roads, with "pockets" every kilometer or so, and if cars meet, it's Norwegian habit to be the quickest on the reverse, and also Norwegian habit to wave to show gratitude of such a speedy reverse. 🙂 In the mountains or on the sea, everyone both wave to each other and also say "hello", and if it's extra wild, to also stop and comment on the weather, to pet the dog of the fellow wanderer and smile to each other. On the ferries, crossing the fjords, at the least inhabitable places, there's no crew, but those that work there just leave a huge stack of a pancake like snack, only thicker, with sour cream in it, and much more tasty, along with coffee, and those that feel thirsty for coffee or "svele", put some coins in the box next to the food. Even the idea of stealing in such a place, is like pouring sewage and oil over mountains and temples in Tibet, only worse.
I saw this movie, other than the slight annoyance of reading subtitles, this was a phenomenally great film. It was clearly a B movie, but felt like watching an A movie. I loved the part where they talk about the troll's biology.
I really wish I could watch this again for the first time. Went in totally blind and was blown away.

I went into Troll Hunter expecting psychological games and "scary noises in the dark" through most of the movie. Boy was I wrong. This movie delivers way more than you could ever ask for in a low-budget horror flick. You get full views of the trolls in action and they look awesome.

I absolutely agree that a remake, especially an American remake, would totally miss the mark and focus on monster effects when in the original, the characters (especially the troll hunter himself) are what really make the story - although I love the trolls. My grandmother came here from Sweden and they have their share of troll stories. Most of the storybooks my grandmother used to teach me to read (at 5!) were full of all kinds of monsters -- they were truly "grim" fairy tales. Most people don't realize how dark and terrifying fairytales are in their original form. I loved this movie and I got genuinely scared, especially of that giant rabid troll, and Oh My God the one on the bridge! I've watched this movie a few times and I seriously hope it doesn't get remade.
