I've been using exclusively Koken for 30 odd years here in New Zealand. My reliable friends.
You're going to find the Koken spark plug socket is absolutely superior to the Snap-On. The Koken will fit in places the Snap-On does not and the rubber insert on the Snap-On dies rendering the retention feature completely useless while the spring clip on the Koken simply works. The flare nut sockets can be an absolute time and wrencher saver. This design is a Koken original with Snap-On being the copy. Skipped sized are based on industry metric tube nut and fitting sizes. The other Koken original socket that is extremely useful, their three pin cam drive stud removal-installer socket. This design is licensed to others who offer this type of stud socket. Koken offers a host of sockets not made or offered by other brands. Their standard sockets are as good as any other high quality brand.

The Hazet spark plug socket is the best
After I got into a disagreement with my Snap-On dealer over their "lifetime warranty," I sold off my entire 20-year collection. I bought all-new Ko-Ken tools, and have had zero problems for 3 or 4 years, now. Best decision I ever made.
I was stationed in Japan during the nineties…the country is obsessed with customer service and quality.
BTW…love Vessel JIS screwdrivers too…I always pick them up first when working on Japanese cars, bicycles or other consumer goods.

Got into Koken based on another fella’s YT channel and and got my mind blown with the hex ball u joints. Glad you are giving them some much deserved love and admiration on your channel.
I almost exclusively use Koken. They are awesome, feel great and have never let me down. I work on motorcycles and their T-bar wrenches are out of this world, the satin finish makes them very nice to use, as they spin so freely in your hands. They also do a lot of motorcycle specific tools, like a 27 mm socket with 3/8" drive (for KTM's), 46 1/2" drive (Ducati), and a superb short flexible 3/8" ratchet which is amazing. Top quality and in my opinion, better than Snap-On.

Watched the whole thing. Wow, I rarely get jealous about tools, but I'm jealous. These all look like they would make working on a Subaru or any Japanese car a dream. The US designed stuff really just doesn't "get it" especially when it comes to cheaper tools. Funny too, because I literally needed one of those 13mm plug sockets last night for the first time in ages. The ratchet sizes, the hex U-joints, the swivel grip sockets, all look super awesome! Great haul. Excited for the review.

I really like my Ko'ken wobble plus extensions, their quality, feel and design are far better then Snap-on in my opinion. They are not as shiny as Snap-on but the slim design and the knurled top part makes them really nice tools. And this comes from a Snap-on tools "collector" 😁
How funny I’ve always felt and thought of the same thing about the universal joints how they could’ve made it like a half shaft ball bearing, also in the 90s when I was a kid I had an idea about LCD Display in cars I figured it would probably come around in the 2000s to where you could put your tachometer where you wanted it look at we have today digital dashboards for tachometers and odometers 🤔

A fitter/mechanic and friend had been using for years a Koken socket set. That same socket set he gave to me before he passed . That was about twelve years ago. Classified as vintage now and the ratchet still has no issues. Reliable I think so.

That is really interesting. I had no idea Japan made there own specialty tools for Japanese cars. On some items there just as expensive as Snap On anyways.
Recently had to borrow the snap on universal sockets in 1/4 shown here.
Was looking at investing in them.
The full 5 to 15 snap on set is north of $600.
The koken is $250.

I've been suffering with insomnia for the last 4 months have not gotten to sleep at all it's been miserable. I found this video 5 minutes I was knocked out
you see the retaining ring impacts and sockets often in the construction industry and when tethered tools are required. often when a worker will be in an elevated position to protect people below from dropped tools.

That 13mm square pipe plug socket @6:00 is essential for Nissan too. You can tell when someone has busted one open with a 1/2" extension, it mangles it.
I wish I had seen this before I just spend $2k on Hazet sockets. On the other hand, perhaps the Koken would have cost me twice as much for the same things. Their prices are more in line with Snap On (but not quite that crazy). I was attracted to Hazet because the prices are 75% less than Snap On and I believe quality is just as good. I also prefer the matte finish, because gloss chrome tools look beat up when they are used, and Matte look new forever.
Nice haul. We have a fair bit of Koken here in Australia. I love the Z series swivels. The crowfoot sockets are great because you have no offset when using a torque wrench, very useful for fuel pipes. I'd also highly recommend their wobble-plus extensions, the knurling on them is so nice, a real pleasure to use and much cheaper than Snap-On (in Aus at least). Nice vid!

Koken do some really nice socketry, some of the more special sockets like the retaining sockets totally unique .
Those wheel nut sockets also a great design as well as quality .
Extensions and wobble joints also pretty unique top end effort .
Ratchets are quality and legendary low backdrag but I find handles too short and to many 70 to 90 tooth count ratchets of great design and less cost, Still nice have few Koken ones the special scenarios .
I got Koken sockets over 25yrs old, they hold up well but chrome flaking was bad on earlier tools .
They great buy off amazon if do your due diligence on pricing .
Stahwille open box series 13 and 14 another great tool for subarus, the ring offset on those along with fitment precision make impossible a 30 second job at times, Facom reversable wrenches a gem too and their extendable handle ratchets are quality/value, they all pretty cheap on amazon germany too .
Stahlwille is another excellent brand with a very long record and history of excellence. They are very common in the Aerospace industry from Airbus, Boeing, Rolls Royce and many-many others use Stahlwille exclusively. First set of Stahlwille# 14 combo wrenches were purchased in the late 1970's. Still have and use the to this day, countless stuff they have wrenched on and have held up excellent given how they have been used over all those decades. The Stahlwille# 14 has a drop style box end instead of the direct angle box end that is the most common design. That drop box design will allow access into places the direct angle design cannot reach. The Stahlwille# 14 drop box end is angled at 10 degrees instead of 15 degrees for the direct angle box, 10 degrees produces lower side loading, this reduces the possibility of the box end slipping off when a LOT of torque needs to be applied. Stahlwille# 13 short combo simply works. Notable is the lower weight, satin non-chrome, groove in the center design results in a much lesser tendency for the wrench to slip once there is moto goo on the hands. All these details reduces wrencher fatigue over hours of wrenching with better wrench control.
I've moved all the Snap-On bright, smooth, shiny chrome combo wrenches and have replaced then with Stahlwille, absolutely zero regrets as the Stahlwille wrenches are simply that much superior in every way. For basic hand tools Stahlwille is just excellent.

I had sets since the early 90's and they still A1 besides a 10mm that I shorted on a truck battery, learn't me a lesson though .

That’s a great idea I love that company have a few things from them. Very high quality tools just worry about warranty. And wanted to say grey pneumatic has that odd driverhink it’s called 6s used on a 1/4 swivel magnetic impact set that’s my most used socket set.
Good point! These do look like tools I would use on my "nice stuff" and not beat the crap out of. Really stuck rusted bolt? Break out the Harbor Freight! Hah. These would definitely be big time and frustration savers for general work though. :)
Modern high quality hand tools rarely fail when used properly. I've owned-used Stahlwille, Proto (Southern California, NOT stanley ? made), Wright Tool, Facom, Bonney-Utica, Snap-On, Craftsman (Western Forge USA, NOT China made), TopTul (Taiwan), Granco, Koken, Brit tool, Apex tool, Omega and countless others over decades of wrenching with zero failures. There was a time post WW-II when hand tool failures were common. This is the origins of Snap-On's "Lifetime Warranty" it was really a Marketing move to help promote their stuff during a time when US of A made tools can be questionable. The Lifetime warranty projected the impression their tools were absolutely superior over any and they would last a lifetime... in reality ALL hand tools wear out and can be broken if properly abused. Today, Snap-On compensates for their absurd cost by this "lifetime warranty" with a good percentage of that going to the tool truck driver except that percentage that would have gone to the tool truck driver goes to Snap-On stock holders-investors-bankers (NOT their employees) when purchasing Snap-On via the web.

Yes, they can be warrantied, but that gets tiresome and their impact sockets are NOT low cost. Hazard Fraught Pro (Taiwan) holds up surprisingly well for their cost. A set of HF pro 1/2" drive impact sockets can be had for about $26 with the coupon and they are lifetime warranty. So, purchase no less than two sets. If one socket dies, get another from the spare sets and wrench on. Once time allows, take the busted-wore out HF socket back for replacement and wrench on again. BTW, more powerful the impact wrench the more beating the sockets must take.
How do these Ko-Ken sockets compare to snap-on sockets? If you were to only be able to have one or the other which would you choose? Thank you.
Something very very interesting . . . About Those Flare nut sockets. I am an electrician and I've own a tool with that same design that is made for a completely different purpose. That is the same design as a Coax TNC Connector (Do a google search for " Ideal 35-046 " to see what I'm talking about) but TNC Connectors are made with a screwdriver style handle whereas those flare nut sockets are sockets, but the design is the same.

See the country and bring home some tools even some nice jdm things you cant find in the us. Send it home or to somebody who can recieve your packages for you in the us. And you would save so much money and japan is so amazing you would enjoy yourself i promise

I have now invested in the nut grip sockets for that rare occasion when I need one.
Only that rare occasion has multiplied now I have them. I use them far more than expected.

I really like Koken tools except ratchets. Teeth count is low so it’s very slow. Another Koken tool I found useful is 3/8 powerbar 3768p.

Ben Nakajima I thought that, initially but I’ve become a convert to Ko-Ken ratchets because of the very low back drag, great for starting bolts, especially when you combine them with the Quick Spinners they do.
Deebo1812 Koken Ratchets are good if you can get a space for full turn. But the most of times, you cannot. This is the time when Koken ratchets slow you down.

@@tnak004 Use a different socket drive attachment like a Tee handle. If getting at the nut/bolt with a long extension ( 350mm Plus) is often faster than any ratchet. If really pressed for space, flex head Gearwrench or similar works better than any high tooth count ratchet. Then we have the cordless impact which is FAR faster than any hand wrenching item. I'm not one to use ratchets for breaking nuts/bolts loose as habit. I'll put a LONG box wrench on the target nut/bolt first if possible to break it loose then apply what ever is needed to remove it. Far preferred is using a Milwaukee cordless with a long extension and swivel or non swivel socket as first item to take stuff apart. If the thing is stuck, out comes the 3/4" drive Milwaukee cordless, if that does not do it (yet to happen) the3/4" drive 1600 ft/lb ATP air impact will remove it or break it.
Check out Nepros, that is the Japanese version of snap on.

Koken is lovely stuff, I think you have to own some of their stuff to appreciate how good Japanese quality is.
The other high end tool manufacturer in Nepros, I think it is KTC's top of the range. Their ratchets are beyond perfect

Hey MrSubaru I was looking at your specialty tools list and I was wondering if by any chance you would know where I can get the special 5 point torx 40 bit for doing the back lash on electric rack and pinion. I'm a Subaru tech in NC but someone has misplaced or walked off with the shops tool and the special wrenches for it as well. I went to my parts manager about it and I've been getting the run around. I also went to my local Matco dealer about it for the bit because stis says I can get it from Matco but my guy couldn't find it can you give me some direction

Ko-ken has established itself in the USA, but they're just starting out. Only 5 dealers in the US currently. I may be able to get warranty via them, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I'll be sure to make a video on the warranty.
Idk how it is in USA but they are sold by Würth in Europe, I busted a 22mm socket using a 6 foot cheater bar and i got a new socket without any questions asked ;)

Literally I don’t use chrome sockets anymore.
I have all 1/4 drive, 3/8 drive, 1/2 drive impact sockets all used with locking extensions and I never have a problem with wear or dropping a socket.
And they’re not even snap on.

Snap-On wishes its sockets were Koken
Those universal joints limit the angle to 60 degrees so they don't flop around and twist up as you try to use them. They are absolutely excellent. I used mine today. I carry them all over the country every week.

2 Stroke, Running and repair I can tell you now it’s way higher quality than kincrome or side Sidchorme you get in Australia or in New Zealand sidchorme is rebranded Stanley tools mead in Taiwan no longer mead in Australia not for meany years.. I would compare koken tools to snap on tools or stahlWille tools and maybe Mac tools USA mead not Taiwan..

Frankstools.com Not sure if you ever saw that sight. Almost all Japanese. Some brands you might not be familiar with as well as Koken, KTC, Nepro. Some nice automotive specialty tools. Prices look good, but I never have ordered from them.
