In this video, we’re going to talk in-depth about the relationship between high cortisol and sleep. What is cortisol? Cortisol is a stress hormone that has a lot of different functions with the immune system for countering stress. It’s a survival hormone. *High cortisol can definitely interfere with restful sleep. Between about 12am and 2am, you should have the lowest amount of cortisol. The highest level of cortisol is between 6am and 9 am. But, in some cases, cortisol can get higher during the night and counter deep sleep. You might be sleeping, but you’re not getting deep sleep or restful sleep. There can be a problem with different parts of the brain that are activated and then prevent you from getting restful sleep, all because your cortisol will not turn off. The goal is not to keep cortisol at zero but to help normalize cortisol, so you don’t have anything interfering with your sleep cycles. But, you still need to have the function of cortisol, which is vital.
What to do about high cortisol:
    • Figure out what’s causing you stress and do what you can to handle it
    • Go for long walks (45-60 minutes every day outside and disconnected)
    • Try my do it yourself acupressure technique
What you can take to reduce stress:
    • L-tyrosine
    • L-theanine
    • Calcium
    • Magnesium
    • Potassium
    • Zinc
    • GABA
    • Ashwagandha
    • Magnolia
    • NAC

I've had Nonrestorative sleep for 41 years. I'm still alive with many symptons. Childhood trauma can be connected to the root cause. Many people chalk it up to working too much when at times they never find the cause so proper treatment never happens. I hope things are a bit better now. Take care...

This was a nice thorough presentation.
I do have a correction for you though: L tyrosine is NOT a calming amino acid. On the contrary it is stimulating and it is used directly to make L-Dopa and dopamine, epi and norepi.
Its effects are best felt when you take it on an empty stomach.
If you have ever taken it you will know that it increases your alertness and too much can make you feel kind of panicky.
It has been used by the Air Force in the past to help sleep deprived pilots be stimulated and alert.
It has also been used in addiction medicine as it helps boost the low dopamine that many cocaine addicts have.
Tyrosine can be a helpful compound, but I would definitely recommend NOT taking it past mid afternoon or it can cause insomnia.
As little as 500 mg of L-tyrosine can wake up your brain and boost your alertness. This is just a caution - an FYI for those who have not tried it.
I am a pharmacist and I have researched it quite a bit, and I have also personally taken it on and off for more than 15 years

Hello sir, your videos are amazing! I was wondering if you could include recommended foods as well, after the 'recommended vitamins and nutrients' segment. Or perhaps have side by side visuals of the pills and foods, because right now it might seem like you are recommending pills (visually), even though you're actually recommending foods (verbally). I also think by showing fresh looking foods visually, it will imprint the knowledge onto the viewer, so the next time they are out buying grocery they will recognize the foods and its benefits much easier. Anyhow, thanks for the great videos, they're really helpful 👍
    Edit:
To make it even more effective, you could show the amount needed on a daily basis for an average person. So let's say the nutrient you're recommending is found in a tomato (and other alternatives), but all is needed are 3 slices of tomato, and maybe 5 slices of the alternative, so you show just that. This will make the videos even more valuable, and perhaps attract even more people! Of course it will be a lot of work, because you'll have to build a huge database to make it easier and faster to calculate the amount of recommended food 😬

I had insomnia in my early twenties. I'd be lucky if I could sleep for 2 hours straight. All I could do was to keep my eyes closed. This had been going on for months and I've tried a lot of things including getting drunk before going to bed. None worked but, one day I found an ad about reprogramming your subliminal (subconscious) mind and they were only asking me for about $30 for the audiotape (yes, it's a tape, not a CD). I was so desperate I bought the tape and listened to it every night. The sound was pleasant. For the first week, nothing happened but I kept listening until I was able to sleep regularly. It took me about 3 months before I could sleep normally. That was 35 years ago. I'm happy that until now I don't have a sleeping problem.

    Hi Dr. Berg,
Thank you so much for the information given in your video. I would like to tell you that
I have been experiencing a sleep problem for quite sometime and that is, I can't stay asleep for more than 4 ½ hours, without wakening up, weather I go to bed at 10, 12 or 1 am. During this period of time, I do not wake up. I do not have trouble falling asleep at all either. I wonder whether this might have something to do with the cortisol hormone disrupting the sleep cycle, as you mention in your video, or due to low sugar levels after those 4 ½ hours during sleep, or some other factor(s). I am 64, do regular exercise, try to eat healthy avoiding of course, too much carbs or sugar, And in general terms, I do not feel stressed out. I do not even wake up with the urge to urinate despite my age. However, I do like to drink at least two cups of coffee at breakfast time!!

-@@sarahthomson8183- I know Dr. Berg likes nutritional yeast, but I like the lipodized capsules of B1, known as Benfotiamine. They also help with eye health and with nerve pain, and are better absorbed. I use Vitacost's house brand; it works fine, costs less. I do not notice any help for sleep from it, but it put my serious eye infection into remission in one week and it has stayed that way for a decade. Ashwaghanda and Magnesium Threonate are what helps me with sleep.

For me getting the right amount of light exposure is what helped me with sleeping deeper and being more alert during daytime.
In the morning my philips wake up light alarm starts shining bright light through my closed eyelids 30min before I have to wake up. No more buzzing and feel less groggy. On my PC and phone my blue light filter program automatically starts reducing blue light when bedtime is approaching.

    • @AntonioDal.
      @AntonioDal. 4 года назад +1

@@Kube_Dog its a program which reduces the blue light coming from your screen. Blue light can make it hard to fall asleep at a specific time because it supresses certain hormones like melatonin.
Your screen will be more yellowish with the program at after a certain time but you will get used to that

    • @AntonioDal.
      @AntonioDal. 4 года назад +1

@@Kube_Dog windows 10 already has a blue light filter. Press search and type night time. If you then click "set hours" you can decide at what time your blue filter starts working at which is for me 3hours before bedtime and the same goes for my phone. • @IvanKleshnin

I nearly died this year because of Ashwagandha. When you already have a cortisol resistance lowering cortisol turns on inflammation like crazy. For example, I got hepatitis in a matter of two months. Spending the next 2 months in hospital... The point is: Ashwagandha definitely works but its results may be dangerous.
