DOOM: The Dark Ages Taps Into Classic DOOM To Create Something New | Summer Game Fest 2024

- Опубликовано: 9 июн 2024
- ID Software's Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin join us to share more details on the upcoming DOOM: The Dark Ages, which was revealed as part of the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase.
DOOM: The Dark Ages wants to fill your screen with more than three times the enemies, and massively opens up the world to exploration, all while letting you ride giant dragons and pilot enormous mechs.
Featuring classic weapons like the Super Shotgun, and introducing new ones like the Skullcrusher, DOOM: The Dark Ages' combat is much more grounded and tankier than other DOOM games, and not just because the Doomslayer is wielding a brutal chainsaw shield. - Игры
Oh look! It's the guy who abused, slandered and stole from a phenomenal freelancer who was in no small part responsible for making Doom 2016 so iconic! Glad to see he's still in the company...
Yall just need someone to be the enemy, don't you?
Regarding what happened, the hate is valid

Remember guys, Marty is not a nice guy. He's solely responsible for the state of the Doom Eternal Soundtrack.
Kinda goes beyond the soundtrack, it showed us what kind of a person Marty really is and it makes the whole franchise now feel greasy.
All my homies hate marty
It makes me debate whether or not I even want to buy or support the game with Marty still on the team
Yeah, I will likely be passing on the game because of it.
I can't help, but feel dissatisfied with the whole system.
Hope Marty stranton is not gonna be toxic towards the new composer at least.
He should've been removed from the company entirely

@@ians_parks yeah, but being executive producer AND director is probably far too much work for just one man.

most games are created with a vision. you can like them or hate them, but they are created with a vision. it's not special.
@mashakos5377 but a lot of AAA titles still come out half-baked, buggy messes that need patches for months before they're even playable. A lot of times that vision you're talking about is just money

@RadioCraftZ Oh yeah, a vision of a thousand loading screens... clearly they didn't have neither skill or technology to pull off something like that. The game was doomed from the get go.
I respect that they are not just trying to make doom eternal 2 but found a whole new direction for doom.

Because whether you like someone or not you shouldn’t be able to “cancel” a person. It’s a disgusting communist attitude that needs to go away. What’s your social credit look like? Should we be looking into canceling you? That’s preposterous
@@FR4M3Sharma Martys second account i bet.
What this game is to Doom is what Army of Darkness felt like for Evil Dead. The medieval setting, demonic enemies, especially the inclusion of Doomslayer’s “boomstick,” all remind me of Army of Darkness.
I think “if Army of Darkness took place in Middle Earth” is a very apt description of what we’ve seen here.
Absolutely agree! It seems slightly off brand but is just enough of that iconic energy to fit perfectly into the franchise. Doom The Dark Ages will probably be as fondly remembered as Army of Darkness was for Evil Dead fans in the future.
Love that movie. I actually so want to rewatch Ash vs. the Evil dead
A man of culture I see.
Chad comment
This is what every game trilogy wants to be. A perfect mix of new ideas and nostalgia. The old school first person shooter is not dead and they are keeping it alive.
Hearing Doom being described as "a celebration of video games" is such a strong message. Most studios today try realism and realistic gameplay/mechanics/looks. Everything seems copy and paste because every one has the same goals and wants the same effect from another game. Meanwhile, Doom is simply "remember when games looked like this? Remember when they were GAMES?" I love it. Pure entertainment and nothing else.
But is there purple goo. IS THERE PURPLE GOO.
More important, is there purple goo on the skybox

@@croakinc3670 i think thats definitely how the game is gonna end. Maybe with the Blood Temples getting felled upon the Doom Guy.

And I’m also really glad that everyone seems on board, especially coming from the Zelda fandom.

Just like Doom 2's final boss, the final boss in this game should have Marty's head on a stick as the real hitbox.
It's Marty. I hope he gets booed at quakecon
would never happen, but it sure would be nice. maybe everyone should throw receipt rolls at him.
That would be such a dream 😍
14:33 YES HUGO. YES. YOU FIGURED IT OUT, this is all I wanted to hear. Old Doom was basically Matrix FPS. You could dodge everything except hitscans and were heavily punished if you got hit. Modern Doom has been great but it has lacked THIS. I am actually 11/10 stoked now.
That was revolutionary at the time, rudimentary now. You can 100% dodge a lot of the projectiles on Eternal because dashes and double jumps. You're gonna get hit, but the game rewards you for moving faster and evading those attacks. Classic DOOM is honestly outdated if you don't count the mods.
Them going back into those games shows me that they are quite literally taking a step back in the gameplay loop to cater to more casual audiences.
@@byeetch Maybe they are just trying not to make DOOM Eternal 2 but found a whole new direction for DOOM, which is something really good, of course it's going to bring a lot more people into the saga, but that doesn't mean the movement change was just to attract casual audiences.
@@irotrex8882 Them outright admitting to just disregard all the mechanics from the modern titles and starting from scratch was a REALLY dumb decision. Why are they doing that? Because one of the few complaints Eternal had was that it's too fast, too methodical, too game-y, no immersion. Casual gamers now are so spoiled by handholding and expecting interactive blockbusters when they're supposed to be GAMES. Of course I'm not saying TDA is going to be a story game, but there's clearly incentive on capitalizing the casual audience.
A big part of Eternal was their philosophy of "OUR gameplay is fun, we'll teach you how to play it fun". OG DOOM and what looks like Dark Ages is going for isn't this at all. No tight space arenas, slower combat and "stand and fight" analogy seems to me like they're trying to cash in the casual souls audience that's absolutely booming right now more than trying to actually innovate.
An Eternal 2 with a massively expanded arsenal and gameplay mechanics would've been a dream come true for people who actually played the game extensively on UN for hundreds of hours. The game had soo many cut content, missed opportunity on modding and not even snapmap was brought back. After all, it's a franchise trilogy, Eternal was quite literally DOOM 2016 2 in terms of gameplay.
This is such a risky move to do. To completely change up the formula like this is nuts. But I am completely confident they will pull it off. Their passion alone is what makes me think they will.
I think it'll be a nice change of pace.
its not that big of a risk at all. they give you a shield and got rid of the air dashing. other than that the formula is the same lol. really looking forward to it as well
Me too! I'm glad they're not just replicating the Doom Eternal formula. They're always reinventing this game with every iteration and I am here for it!
I am actually fairly excited that they are changing the formula but i am still very worried. I hope the melee combat fits well, as well as the addition of the Shield.

This franchise has just been pure video game energy since its 2016 revival. Straightforward action and seemingly complex yet simple game design. I love it! Can’t wait to slay more demons in the dark ages!
I've always loved learning about the dark ages, and I've always loved doom. A combination of the two being a real thing is almost unbelievable.
You do know that the setting of this game has nothing do with the period of history of the Western Civilization commonly known as the "Dark Ages", right? It takes place during Hell's Invasion of the fictional planet of Argent D'Nur, which was introduced in Doom 2016 and played a prominent role in Eternal and Ancient Gods. I think a lot of people are not quite getting this fact. Granted, Argent D'Nur setting does take some inspiration from ye olde Europe but it's mostly fantasy mixed with sci-fi kind of setting.
@@Prizrak-hv6qk i was thinking of more of the aesthetic and vibe, but go off nerd
@@bababooey9825 Then you should've been more clear. One thing id love to see is a PvP mode.
I wish they never gave up on PvP after 2016's recieved mixed reviews, cause I had a lot of fun with it and thought the customization was great, it just needed some work and refinement.
So I'd really love to see them take another shot at it in The Dark Ages.
I really hope they just do a straight up classic arena shooter pvp. Everyone playing as their own "Slayer" with the full arsenal of weapons and abilities available as map pickups across deathmatch, tdm, and maybe a handful of interesting objective modes. I did enjoy the moving hill mode from 2016, and I also liked the idea of the Demon Rune, just not how it actually played out. If they worked on it and made it feel a little more akin to how Eternal's Battlemode demons played, that'd be the perfect mixture of all of the awesome things :D
The description of the game on the slayers club site mentions that its a single player only game.
Innovation from larg-ish/popular Devs (outside of Nintendo) pretty much never happens anymore. (Innovation in monetization? Sure.) I trust Hugo and team to deliver after their incredible work on 2016 and Eternal!
The line about 300 and Aragorn is why Hugo is special - he knows we long for that feeling, but never really get outside of cutscenes. Stoked about a video game after a longgggg time!
Does Hugo seem like a stressed shell of his former upbeat self, or am I looking too far into it

No, I noticed it too. He and Marty don't seem anywhere near as enthusiastic and excited as they were in the past when they were hyping up Doom 2016 and Eternal. I don't know what is going on here. Maybe they were just tired during this interview.
Dang I knew they were goin for a more classic Doom feel with the gameplay loop, great stuff overall X33
So glad to hear them talking about slowing the projectile speed. That was the main thing about 2016 and eternal that prevented them from feeling like classic doom
Yea I have my skepticisms, but overall positive, and I really like what he hugo said about the projectible speed. Even with how different Doom 3 was, that was one of the great satisfactions it carried over from original Doom.
I liked playing 2016 and eternal, but yeah, original doom is by far to me the game that will be “eternal” (no pun intended lol). It’s awesome to hear they are going back to that.

I dont usually call it before its released but basically they've already nailed this game
I like the comparison of how The Dark Ages can be compared to a tank while Eternal or 2016 can be compared to a fighter jet, it’s a much more grounded game and I think that’s what’ll be fun about The Dark Ages when it’s released next year, I’m hoping we get some weapons that’ll be on par with the BFG, Crucible or Sentinel Hammer when it’s released but either way I’m still very excited for this game.
