This game to me is the prime example of how a unique setting can take what is already a pretty good game into greatness. The gameplay of Fallen Aces is decent but it's been done before. It's your standard Immersive Sim affair with an emphasis on melee combat. But the noir setting, each map dripping with a 1930's radio drama atmosphere as you visit bars, apartments and gambling dens and those cutscenes that look straight out of a detective pulp comic is wholly unique. If this is the beginning, i'm really looking forward to what's in store for this game

And a part of the reason why even the "standard immersive sim" is anything but a standard -- but rather rare even on indie levels. The level design alone iN Fallen Aces is really great here in how open it is, how many ways there are, how many choices it gives you. The game pulls few punches here, as soon as you wake up you're already given a couple decent choices in how to handle the "goons knocking at yer door" situation. But that takes a bit more than simply building great environments to smash waves of enemies. Anyhow, hopefully this type will get its "Boomer Shooter" wave too. :-)

The Thief fan mission community at ttlg had always been able to make something along those lines (some of those guys and gals were actually signed by Arkane and the like). But it's still all the more impressive as a new game from a tiny team rather than a gigantic studio. With games like this, the wounds of the painfully corridor-like stealth arena Thief reboot are gonna heal. Someday, they're gonna heal. 🙂

10 dollars is a steal even in Early Access with only one chapter. The chapter has around 5 levels (?). I've spent several hours discovering every nook and cranny of the first level. This game is a classic immersive sim with XIII aesthetics. I love it.
You buy imsims because you like imsims' interactive objects, worldbuilding, storytelling, and creative problem solving. I buy imsims because I forget I'm too stupid for imsims and need constant reminding. We are not the same.
The way I'm playing this, which is a more sneaky way, it's pretty much Dishonored: The Knife Of Mobster City, and I'm luvin' it. They've already announced they're going to tune direct combat difficulty though -- even though it reminds me of Dishonored in that regard as well. With all your tools, you can easily wipe out armies in that one. A hub/hide-out to spend your cash is gonna come as well. As you mentioned, one later chapter in particular is a STRAIGHT nod to Thief that's IMPOSSIBLE to miss. Great map design with often tons of verticality in general. Just when this industry drives Arkane into the ground, up come the indies. Hope this brings in a ton of dough for the guys, and they can commit to keep doing this. #0451Forever

I think that could have been a commercial hit (similar to how CRPG+D&D for Larian was a hit). Plus it would have been a decent fit. Think Thief's grave robbery missions, including vague/cryptic in-universe maps to make sense of -- like something taken straight out of the Grail Diary in The Last Crusade. Ah well. :-)

I played the game last night and the demo when it came out, I really liked my time with it. It's fun and how you can explore the world and interact with it is even more fun. I'd strongly recommend it for anyone that has a spare £10 and wishes to play something that feels like what games used to do, respect your time and wallet.
One thing I've noticed about this game; it can be a Batman Sim if you let it. Shutting off the lights, scaring the enemies, going in for stealth KO's, etc. Almost makes me feel episodes 2 and 3, you get to be a superhero, which I would absolutely LOVE.

Imo it feels like being in the Watchmen universe from the perspective of a random guy being inserted into the story. Like, it feels so so SO inspired by it, what with the comic book aesthetic, fhe plot about A.C.E.S being assassinated, nightwave definitely being meant to represent nite owl, victor waltz also reminding me of the comedian (not to mention how he dies uncostumed in his own house) and the A.C.E.S are so reminiscent of the Watchmen themselves. I bet anything that the mysterious man in the end cutscene is going to be a rorshach clone

Played the demo at PAX AUS last year and was instantly hooked. Such a fun, unique game in a setting that seems to miss more them hit these days. Gonna be fun watching this one develop.
For hardmode let the enemies be able to also pick up weapons and healing items around the map to not only let them change how they attack but also lessen your resources as for the money there should be an upgrade shop of some kind
Bought this after your video, managed to to beat the current campaign in 4 hours with ~70% of secrets found in every level on the medium difficulty. While there certainly is room for replayability I don't think it will add much to the experience as the map design is sadly a bit basic, you can notice most of the alternative routes quite easily and the secrets more often than not are kind of "meh". Oh cool, a sniper rifle at a vantage point after I have already cleared the area, can't wait to shoot those two guys instead of fucking them up with a drill my next run... The first level was amazing but then the "immersion" aspect of the sim started to go downhill with each level. It's still worth the price, but it really needs more chapters, sadly, if I understood the roadmap on Steam correctly, they're only planning on releasing the map editor this year.
This was fucking awesome - played it twice back to back on stream 😂 (Sleeping with the Fishes mode seems to just add enemies, not do much damage scaling, so it’s very reasonable)
The most insane and funny thing is in one of the levels you can find a guy on a toilet taking a shit. The audio line for that was like I dunno 5 minutes I felt like it keeps going and going and I was dying laughing. Best performance of taking a shit in a video game ever.
I've been enjoying seeing bits of this game on Twitter (or "X" whatever, F these stupid names) ~There's a lot I love here: The amazing visuals. The depth to how reactive each enemy or object is to your damage is amazing. The art style & graphics are utilized so well. I really hope this game continues to dive into the immersive Sim type of approach to it's gameplay. It's refreshing when it seems like mostly everything nowadays is a boomer shooter. I'm really happy to see the direction and progression this niche of gaming is going. Plus the Noire/thief vibe to this project is amazing. If you couldn't tell I really appreciate this game. I hope more games can learn from this one. It's crazy how so much nowadays in the gaming industry seem to focus on all the wrong things. Gaming needs more of this. I HOPE we see more games like this! Hope things come out on consoles. I'm tired that my PC is down and that's usually the only way you can play most of these quality games now. These companies need to see how dry & boring console currently are. So I wish they would decide to save consoles by making Steam fully compatible and available for Consoles.
There's literally a document lying right on the table you pick the speargun up where it says as much. It's basically the diary of the guy who's been hired to keep the shark population low. 🙂 That's one of the things I love about this game as well: The world is fairly consistent and wholesale. Not just a bunch of maps with enemies to challenge you and weapons to pick up. If you listen to the radio programme right in your appartment when starting out, you'll hear about the sharks long before eventually meeting them in the second chapter already. Lots of small touches like that. Including Mittens, the "missing cat case" making a "return" later on as well. I have a feeling it's not gonna be the last we've heard of that kittizen of Switchblade City!
Ok this is Amazing ‼️I'd love this style in an open world, 3rd person, Mafia/ 30s/40s noir detective mystery game with Fallout 3&4 type music where all choices matter. In the vein of the classic radio detective , private investigator, shamus mysteries with drama and suspense at every turn. Similar to the vibe of Blues and Bullets, Nick Bounty, L.A Noire ,and White Night😢
for money im guessing it will become important once we reach episode 2 , like Nightvale will sell us stuff before missions as Episode 1 is some set up to the story
Story and style wise looks like a cross between Batman The animated series meets Dick Tracy, and gameplay wise it looks like Deus Ex. Also, nightshade also looks like the gray ghost from BTAS as well.
Might I also recommended Ashes 2063. It is a free and standalone total conversion mod for Doom and it just got another episode. It is just a great little game and that it is free is downright crazy. There is also Dread Templar which is more like Dusk and is also great and sadly does not get enough attention.
For anyone that digs the vigilante crime-noir storytelling and the art style in the cutscenes, highly recommend the Reckless comics by Brubaker and Phillips
I mean, I understand where the bad criticism is, but you and others must remember, this is the first release of fallen aces, there of course will be a few bugs such as the objects passing through enemy's and the combat may be easy. The combat in almost every game I've played early access has always been extremely difficult or just extremely easy. Also this one is an older style of game, when I seen this on steam a while back and watched the trailer I immediately thought of the classic doom and doom ll. To me we needed an older style of game with all of these newer ones coming out such as black Opps 6, GTA Vl, and many more.
Question, for me it looks like the frame rate dips ALOT throughout the video (maybe I missed you mention it) but is this just an issue recording wise, or does the game's FPS dip this constantly?
Please consider reviewing PO'ed: Definitive Edition. It went pretty much unnoticed, but it deserves putting it in a spotlight for a moment. Kudos to Nightdive Studious for remastering truly forgotten and obscure game. It's not a great game, but it's certainly unique and has it's moments

They added custom difficulty creator, so you can make it even harder if game was too easy.

The most insane and funny thing is in one of the levels you can find a guy on a toilet taking a shit. The audio line for that was like I dunno 5 minutes I felt like it keeps going and going and I was dying laughing. Best performance of taking a shit in a video game ever.
This artstyle is awesome, and the immersive sim elements are very welcome.
I've been enjoying seeing bits of this game on Twitter (or "X" whatever, F these stupid names) ~There's a lot I love here: The amazing visuals. The depth to how reactive each enemy or object is to your damage is amazing. The art style & graphics are utilized so well. I really hope this game continues to dive into the immersive Sim type of approach to it's gameplay. It's refreshing when it seems like mostly everything nowadays is a boomer shooter. I'm really happy to see the direction and progression this niche of gaming is going. Plus the Noire/thief vibe to this project is amazing. If you couldn't tell I really appreciate this game. I hope more games can learn from this one. It's crazy how so much nowadays in the gaming industry seem to focus on all the wrong things. Gaming needs more of this.
I HOPE we see more games like this! Hope things come out on consoles. I'm tired that my PC is down and that's usually the only way you can play most of these quality games now. These companies need to see how dry & boring console currently are. So I wish they would decide to save consoles by making Steam fully compatible and available for Consoles.

There's literally a document lying right on the table you pick the speargun up where it says as much. It's basically the diary of the guy who's been hired to keep the shark population low. 🙂
That's one of the things I love about this game as well: The world is fairly consistent and wholesale. Not just a bunch of maps with enemies to challenge you and weapons to pick up. If you listen to the radio programme right in your appartment when starting out, you'll hear about the sharks long before eventually meeting them in the second chapter already.
Lots of small touches like that. Including Mittens, the "missing cat case" making a "return" later on as well. I have a feeling it's not gonna be the last we've heard of that kittizen of Switchblade City!
Ok this is Amazing ‼️I'd love this style in an open world, 3rd person, Mafia/ 30s/40s noir detective mystery game with Fallout 3&4 type music where all choices matter. In the vein of the classic radio detective , private investigator, shamus mysteries with drama and suspense at every turn. Similar to the vibe of Blues and Bullets, Nick Bounty, L.A Noire ,and White Night😢
for money im guessing it will become important once we reach episode 2 , like Nightvale will sell us stuff before missions as Episode 1 is some set up to the story

I'm really loving it, dude. It's very Deus Ex or Dishonored, but your Condemned comparison is pretty accurate as well.
Story and style wise looks like a cross between Batman The animated series meets Dick Tracy, and gameplay wise it looks like Deus Ex. Also, nightshade also looks like the gray ghost from BTAS as well.

Might I also recommended Ashes 2063. It is a free and standalone total conversion mod for Doom and it just got another episode. It is just a great little game and that it is free is downright crazy.
There is also Dread Templar which is more like Dusk and is also great and sadly does not get enough attention.
For anyone that digs the vigilante crime-noir storytelling and the art style in the cutscenes, highly recommend the Reckless comics by Brubaker and Phillips
I mean, I understand where the bad criticism is, but you and others must remember, this is the first release of fallen aces, there of course will be a few bugs such as the objects passing through enemy's and the combat may be easy. The combat in almost every game I've played early access has always been extremely difficult or just extremely easy. Also this one is an older style of game, when I seen this on steam a while back and watched the trailer I immediately thought of the classic doom and doom ll. To me we needed an older style of game with all of these newer ones coming out such as black Opps 6, GTA Vl, and many more.

Please consider reviewing PO'ed: Definitive Edition. It went pretty much unnoticed, but it deserves putting it in a spotlight for a moment. Kudos to Nightdive Studious for remastering truly forgotten and obscure game. It's not a great game, but it's certainly unique and has it's moments

I think the bar of soap thing is a refrence to ultrakill, in the first 1- levels theres a secret bar of soap that 1 shots the boss at the end

This is a mental condition that ive dubbed "ball buster acclimation" where youre so used to getting your loins crushed in the vice of retro games in an era that nobody knew how to balance games, that every game you play these days seems too easy.
