I have been flying the original Mavic Pro for years and it has served it's useful life. I started looking around at all the different models of drones and zoned in on the Mini 3 Pro. I have one coming later this month and I am jazzed about doing the upgrade. I lost line of sight with the Mavic Pro within minutes so it should be just seconds with a quiet mini drone.
I always got kind of a knot in my stomach when the drone went out of line of sight but with these new drones and three-way obstacle sensing with decent looking "bypass" flying technology that looks like it all works, I think I may be more comfortable with it.
I am happy to see that this mini is stable enough in the wind and these range tests confirm that I should not have a problem getting the kind of video and images that I would be after even at height and a ways away.
I have watched maybe six RUclips videos on the Mini 3 Pro and two of them were range tests. Watching a drone fly along for five miles is pretty impressive especially in sub freezing temperatures. Both videos I watched for range tests ended up in forced landings and damage. So the take away for me was that the "useful" range looks like around 1.5 miles if someone is going to spend time doing photography and then get it back to the home point on one battery.
It is definitely impressive and I am looking forward to flying with it.

Thanks for this awesome video Dustin! What I cannot understand is that you've got 276K subscribers and only 1.4K likes. You (spoiler alert) taught us the limits of the DJI Mini 3 Pro, pushed to the upper limit, lost your drone, went on a search and rescue mission alone in the dark with a flash lamp and some food and water in your backpack but did not find the drone. Went to bed with some regrets and swears, asked your son Ken to join you on a second S&R mission that was successful! Man, you deserve at least 100K likes! I hope you have the DJI Care Refresh insurance and got yourself a brand new mini 3 pro. I would have landed that thing on my mom's porch if I were you. Nice story, thanks again!

I was so torn between it and the avata but after flying a friends mini today with the goggles integra and motion controller I chose the mini. the quietness, flight time ,size and camera sold me on the mini..I love doing long, far flights exploring mountain tops...think the mini will be the best choice! My Mavic 2 was did the same pausing during RTH, as if it was stopping for an obstacle. I double checked that the sensors were turned off before having to manually fly home. I did some searching through the settings, and under "advanced" I saw "use obstacle avoidance during RTH," which overrides your settings even if you had obstacle avoidance turned of for normal flight. Lesson learned on that one! Damn near had force land in the trees.

Impressive. It's possible for me to cover ~4.5-4.7 miles and return to my starting point without much difficulty (10-15% battery). In my opinion, wind plays a huge factor -- the drone exerts more effort during its return journey, particularly at higher altitudes, depending on the direction and strength of the wind.

The return to home pause problem may have been because touching the joysticks may have canceled the RTH function. I just watched another Mini 3 Pro range test done in Pakistan. He made it out to 11KM or 6.8 miles, but ended up being about a mile short of his launch point. He decided to put it down in a freshly mown field when he got the forced landing notice. P.S I think I'll order a bright orange skin when I order my drone.

Wish these drones had a separate on board power source separate the propulsion, specifically reserved for beeping and flashing the done during recovery. Something that retains enough juice to flash and beep hours after the main battery dies. Sort of how some watches have a separate on board power source that retains memory even when the main battery dies.

It was powder and the drone got covered when it hit the ground and I ended up stepping on it with my snow shoes and broke an arm. Thankfully it only ended up being an $89 fix from DJI and the ended up sending me a new drone. Thanks for the great video!

I can remember a time with my mini 2 where I flew out at night.
I was flying into the wind like I’m supposed to but on return home the drone was flying soooo slow.
Needless to say I didn’t recover it that night so the very next morning I tracked it to a home. The owner came out with his son and said he would check his backyard.
He returned stating he didn’t see it so I asked if I could look.
And lo an behold it had landed in the middle of their trampoline 🤣
Talk about luck 🤷‍♂️ but thank the lord. I’ve never had a drone that didn’t make it back as much as my mini 2.
And I can’t really see what my mini 3 can do because the range sucks on the new rc😅

Sure enough my Parrot software showed it's last known position when I lost it the previous day. Using my phone's gps I was able to track it down in the middle of a cornfield after just 10 minutes of searching. Still no idea why it fell out of the sky, other than a possible bird strike. Great video Dustin! 👌A real nail biter!! and beautiful scenery. I concur with your assessment of the fragility of the M3Pro. Had a low speed, low altitude (3m) active track crash and had to return to DJI as it cracked the R rear arm at the motor casing. That was the second crash!! The first was another low altitude (2m) crash into a tree trunk. As I pushed the R stick forward, a wind gust pushed it sideways 🙄 On that occasion, the rotating joint on the front L arm was damaged.! I was flying the Mini2 for a while before and it was a lot more robust.
Thx for taking the risks to inform the rest of us. Great work 👍

Geez ... another hair-raising adventure. I think I should have a couple of shots or some valium before I watch your "range test" videos ... they are always heart stoppers! I kept saying (while you were coming back/down) "Keep it up high .. altitude is your friend". Since this was a replacement unit, and you may or may not have done updates, you should check ALL the settings. A lot of times settings get changed after an update. The RTH action may have been set to 'hover' instead of return to home. Anytime there is any kind of update, I recheck all the settings on my M3P. Well, glad you got it back .. nice to have an extra set of eyes to help. Oh, & you're probably correct about the cold affecting the plastic, making it brittle. Hope you get it fixed & back soon. My M3P is my 'go to' UAV now .. just so easy to get in the air. Cheers!

Exhilarating as always Dustin. Flying in the thin air at 7000' used more power. In the cold the arms snap off easily. I broke one off from a 3' fall.
Might want to try a Max Range test where you ignore the battery, fly out until signal is totally lost, stop when signal returns, then land at an easily accessible location for retrieval. Don't forget to reset the Home Point above the remote landing site else RTH will kick in when signal drops as it lands.

The new design of the front arms (folding down) is more prone to breaking. On the Mini 2, the front arms folded straight back, so if the drone ran into something while flying forward, the arms would just collapse back to the body. It was better design.

Ive only ever passed through New Mexico on the way to the Northwest or the Southeast states when I was a kid. Anyway, I confided in my wife after the trip that I was dreading it because I thought it was going to be flat, dusty, dry, cactus, boring, etc. etc. I was so delighted to be wrong, and now I get just as excited for trips to see her family as I do mine. Also, she loves to jab me about my misconception of her home state. lol New Mexico is beautiful and diverse.

Did you leave Hawaii? When comparing to past range tests, does altitude have an impact on range as well since it looks like you live at a much higher elevation than on the island?

Congratulations Dustin! With 2 - 6dbi antennas, I just flew mine 22,058ft. (4.177miles) one way in sport mode!!! I have larger antennas and I will try to actually conserve battery. I had 30% left when I returned.

I think the reason why it didn’t make it to you is that you had it on normal mode. If you had it in sport mode, it might came closer. It was at 32:00

I see you're really unlucky with Mini 3s. lol. If I remember right, you never damaged the Mini 2 or Mavic mini. And boom, Mini 3 Pro and you get 2 replacements. :D thankfully I crashed mine only once, it was pretty hard crash, got it on video from my view too, so that's cool, but mine did not had any damage, only few scratches on the back.

Dustin, I have this drone. I thought you live on Maui? I was going to see if I might visit you there. Are you no longer on Maui? Thanks for ur videos. I sometimes use a rubber band to hold the right stick to give my fingers a break, especially shooting Hyperlapse.

Did my first range test two weeks ago with the mini 3Pro out to 5 km. On return to home it forced land 160 meters into some trees.
MAIN REASON: tilt the camera completely down and try find a clear spot to land!!!!!
    Luckily my drone is ok.
Also the battery level indicator on the screen if tap provide more info....like forced landing time.
    😁👍
