That superman was Syd Barrett. Syd was one of the original band members who wrote the band’s songs at the time. He got caught up in drugs and eventually went crazy. This song is basically the band members tribute to him. Time by Pink Floyd might be a good one to listen to next. An eye opener for those who waste it.

David Gilmour on guitar is a master at conveying emotion through his playing. No unnecessary shredding or showing off, just playing from his soul. He is a legend, and he, Nick Mason and Rick Wright are musical gods to me. Personally I can take or leave Roger Waters, too much ego. It says a lot that the others have remained mates (RIP Rick Wright) but not with Roger. Their music has been a part of my life since I first heard them when I was 15 . The only band that I still listen to daily, especially from the 1994 Pulse concert in London in 1994.

@@anksreacts Actually Syd was a genius and lovely guy. Then he used to take too many and illegal drugs. And he was around the wrong people maybe. Whatever happend nobody knows. Members of Pink Floyd always explained it with the words: "and then suddenly his eyes were like black holes in the sky". Actually he was not 'working' anymore as a usual human. An example was given by the band members. They were playing a song that Syd wrote but Syd always changed the rythem or the melody while they tried to understand the song. And the only text to it was "you got it now?" I hope I remember all that correctly. If not other Pink Floyd fellows may correct me.
There is another extremly strange thing about all that. While Pink Floyd did the final mixing of Shine On you Crazy Diamond in the studio suddenly a stranger appeard in the studio. All members of the band thought it is a personal of the studio - until one of them recogniced that it was Syd. The same guy they have not seen for about 5 years and for whom they just created a song. If you are more interested in all that I propose to read about all that. There are many videos, books and websites that explaines all the history of Pink Floyd in a much better way than I can ever tell it.

This is one of the best things ever recorded. Every note is exactly where it should be. Brilliant! Here you can see how great Rick Wright was as a composer and what a unique catharist David Gilmour is. His guitar always hits you right in the heart. And Dick Parry's closing saxophones - oh - what a passion! A truly wonderful memory of Syd.
By the way, this whole album shows the creative and personal well being of the band at the time. They had the mega-successful album The Dark Side of the Moon under their belt, knew they were financially well off, and were free from the pressures of recording studios and producers. This album began their truly independent and free creative period. It's just a shame it didn't last longer. Already during the recording of the next album Animals, the problems initiated by Roger Waters started and by the end of their career together it didn't get better - on the contrary, it escalated. By the time The Wall was recorded, the collaboration was in tatters (Waters fired Wright).
If you want another real musical (and visual) treat, check out "Echoes" live at Pompeii. It's a 1971 recording (from the original Meddle album). Beautiful atmosphere and another masterpiece by Rick Wright...

I love the emotion you put into your reaction. You've picked the perfect band for that. David Gilmour's guitar playing is all emotion and his voice is beautiful. Please do more Pink Floyd. Some of their albums are considered "concept" or theme albums; meant to be listened to in one long, un-interrupted stretch as the tracks flow into each other. For starters, I would recommend that you do their classic album "Dark Side of the Moon" in two parts (side 1 and side 2). You'll be glad you did! After that, lots more to come.

Nice reaction bro, you "get" Pink Floyd. This song is about one of the founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964, Syd Barrett. Unfortunately, his abuse of LSD and other mind-altering drugs, forced him to leave the band by the end of 1967. He also had developed some mental issues that possibly related to or were exacerbated by the LSD.
He was replaced permanently with his good friend guitarist and singer Dave Gilmour in 1968, and he's been with PF ever since. Gilmour had been filling in for Barrett for many shows and performances in 1967 because of Barretts inability to function.
Although Syd Barrett was not around when the band hit the BIG-TIME with their iconic "Dark Side of the Moon" album in 1973, the band continued to pay him his full shards of the proceeds until he died in 2006.
The "Wish You Were Here" album is the album this song is on, if you listen closely to the lyrics of the "Wish You Were Here" song, they are talking about Syd Barrett. And in this song, they are also talking about Syd, Syd is the "Crazy Diamond"!
This song, SOYCD, you're reacting to here is only parts 1-5, you should definitely react to parts 6-9, which is incredible!

SYD... Shine on You crazy Diamond... Syd Barret, the founder of the band, and their "lost" friend.
He cried for the moon, exposed to light, reached for the secret too soon...

@@anksreacts Yup the first album, and one song from the second (Jugband Blues), the latter is a kind of "goodbye" letter to the band, and it echoes in Dark Side of the Moon "Brain Damage" when Roger Waters writes "And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I see you on the dark side of the moon".
But "Dark Globe" is part of his solo work (although Gilmour and Waters helped him to record and produce it). He did 2 albums solo, very weird at first, but if you get into it, you can appreciate the poetry, and the tormented, while funny mind he was...

A combination of drugs, possible mental health issues, and perhaps the stress of success brought the band to make the tough decision of not picking him up one day, and remove him from the band.

It's funny you mention Stanley Kubrick at the start, during production of A clockwork orange (1971) Kubrick initially wanted to use the title track of Pink Floyd's 5th studio album 'Atom Heart Mother' (released a year prior) which is a pure 20+ minute instrumental (I'd say it's worth a listen) however the band declined it's use in the film (it would have been the main theme as far as I'm aware) however, in a scene in the film where the main character of the film is seen at a record stall, the album can be seen on a shelf in the background (it's cover is a cow in a field staring right at you)

Speaking of Kubrick he wanted to use Pink Floyd in more than one of his movies and they were just a bit selfish and stubborn! Would have been cool but it never happened! Somebody synced up Pink Floyd song "Echoes" from their album "Meddle" with the last 23 minutes of 2001 A Space Odyssey which sinks up perfectly!! You should check that out someday even if you do it on your own!
Their bandmate and original songwriter of their first album called Piper at the Gates of Dawn was mostly written by SYD Barrett. He had a propensity apparently towards schizophrenia took way too much acid and kind of lost it. They had to replace him with David Gilmour the lead guitarist you hear hear and one of the main singers. However Roger Waters is singing in this song. Rodger Waters now the main Lyricist and bass player.
And Roger Waters the genius he is with lyrics put SYD in the song you're hearing as follows:
Shine on You crazy Diamond = S. Y. D. Just getting SYD's name in the song as an acronym.
Last thought here don't worry about SYD!! the Floyd band members were friends with Mr Barrett since childhood and they definitely took care of him his whole life until he died in 2006!

Thank you very much this comment Jon, I love these long comments. They are so informative. Especially since I know almost nothing about this band or the band member. Syd’s story seems so fascinating to me, now that I know a little bit about him and also just tragic. Although it’s good to know that he wasn’t Al or and that his band mates took care of him.
And I’ll check out that 2001 video for sure. That’s actually the visual that popped into my head when this song started. And I just went with it. I know they used a version of Eclipse for Dune last year and I hope they can use some more PF tunes for the sequels. Thanks again.

This song has a total of 9 parts and is roughly 25 minutes long ( WELL WORTH THE LISTEN ). This song was actually actually written as a tribute to the original member ( Sid Barret ) who was battling mental illness. I have heard as a rumor ( I have no idea if it is true or not ) that Sid heard it and didn't really like it. Sid eventually lost his battle to his illness. This is just one of countless MASTERPIECES to choose from when it comes to Pink Floyd.. I like your reaction because you are learning that Pink Floyd is NOT a band you just listen to. You have to EXPERIENCE them, and they do it with such ease. David Gilmour has a way of making his guitar speak to your soul ( best way I can describe it ). In my opinion, Pink Floyd is the BEST BAND EVER. Their music takes you on a journey in your mind. If you listen to the lyrics, they are usually very deep in meaning. Check out " Money " and " Time ". I could go on and on, because they have so many masterpieces to choose from. I look fwd. to seeing more of your reactions.

A journey, now listen to side 2 parts 6-9, there isn't room here but one at a time listen to, all the way through, to Meddle, Dark Side, this album, Animals and The Wall. You want to expand after that listen to the very first, Piper at the Gates of Dawn and know this, their first single in 1967 was a song about a cross dresser who stole women's clothing off clothing lines, Arnold Layne but it is those albums from 1971-79 that are the essence. This song is about ex member, founding member Syd Barrett who was...fired I guess in 1968 because he was just a little crazy from all the LSD but he showed up to the recording session for this fat, bald and unrecognizable, the saga of Syd Barrett is a sad one but worth knowing.
