Great review. Many life-long Pink Floyd fans, me included, would say that you haven't really lived until you've heard their incomparable 19-minute work of genius, 'Echoes', from their album, Meddle. Definitely do live at Pompeii, and also David Gilmour live in Gdansk from 2006 (Rick's final recording of Echoes before he passed), but as with all Pink Floyd songs you should do the studio version first. Floyd live is better than anyone but what they do in the studio sometimes gets lost in a live recording.
It's not just that you gain by listening to all 9 parts together, but that -- like most Pink Floyd albums -- you gain by listening to the whole album from front to back. The songs cross-fade into each other, and the story telling is built as a whole, not just in individual unrelated songs. (This is especially true in the albums from Dark Side through Final Cut.)
For sure, very hard to do this properly on a reaction channel, but will come up with the best solution I can, esp for Dark Side and The Wall..thanks

Top Shelf Head phones are a must for the opening of this song. There is so much you cant hear or sense otherwise. So many light trickles of sound moving around in your mind , right to left, in and out. Nearly subliminal. Finding something new countless times no matter how many times you listened before. And without doing drugs but sipping on some nice Vodka or Tequila and a hit or two of your favorite green will only help find your center.

I wasvery fortunate to see them 6 times, from their beginning & through their earlier days into the late 70's ((early 80's once)). With no comparison, the very best concerts I've ever had the privilege to attend. There was nothing like them before and since. Phenomenal. I cannot tell you how many times I've listened to complete albums alone & with numerous groups of friends. In many altered states. Hey, I mean it was the 70's after all. Lol. You're correct in saying listening to the entire albums is a must. Respect

The next 10 minutes of part two are the best! They opened with this at Maine road in Manchester UK in 1988. Just as Gilmour comes in with his guitar in the opening sequence. These covers on each side of the stage fell down revealing 50 feet of speakers and Rick Pitched his bass pedal up to volume 13 and shook every organ in the upper body making your ribs rattle.

I've been listening to this album for almost 50 years, and it can still make me cry. It was an out-of-body experience the first time I heard this song. The interplay between David's guitar and Richard's keyboard...not of this world.

This came out on vinyl. There wasn’t enough room to keep the quality if they had kept both 1-5 and 6-9 on one side so they had to split it. Or so I’m told. Your grand children will be playing this for their grand children. That’s how timeless this group is.

Funny you mentioned him, I used to watch him because of Depeche and The Cure n stuff, but then I got into creating ASMR and focused on that in 2022. Now I started watching him again about a week ago. I think for his full albums he plays only tiny bits on YT, but I gotta look into it more. He's amazing with his reviews and comfort on camera. Thanks!
Pink Floyd songs always end too soon because they always leave you wanting more. The next song is Welcome to the Machine which you could hear the beginning of at the very end. Those 2 songs are particularly great to listen to in one go.
Gotta do that one soon...that industrial type sound that came in at the end was a bit chilling!
You're hitting two of my ultra favorites (Rush and Pink Floyd). :) Love this whole PF album.
I love that they used silence, space and time to really give the song full effect. Mark Knopfler has such a love too for a song that is properly given some space to breath and grow.

New subscriber here. Hope you keep going down the PF rabbit hole! Been listening 50+ years now and still never gets old. Depeche mode probably took some lessons from PF, many have. These guys started in 60s. Check out Pulse concert, 1994, Comfortably Numb. The guitar solo by David Gilmour has now been voted #1 in rock history. It will blow you away!

One thing to remember is that when this first came out, it was on cassette, or vinyl records, and all of Shine On would NOT have fit on one side of the album, so they split it. Also, you will find when you listen, it is not so in harmony with parts 1 to 5, but rather to the songs directly preceding it, making each side seamless transitions, which they did with several albums.
I know, you can't help but close your eyes and travel. My all time favorite alone time!

Very good reaction. I was 16 when I bought this LP in 1977. Why split it up? Because of the vinyl album. Parts 1-9 would not fit on one side so they brilliantly split it with Welcome to the Machine, Have a Cigar and WYWH. The album is meant to play at one sitting, and yes the songs flow into each other.
It is indeed their tribute to Syd Barret who formed the band, and was still alive at the time. (S)hine on (Y)ou Crazy (D)iamond). RIP.
I also recommend listening to Dark Side and Animals straight through. All three are masterpieces and I can't pick a favorite.

@retroreactions.... Buckle up for Animals! It's said Waters based it loosely on Orwells Animal Farm, but to me it's his in your face critique of people and politics. And the soundscapes are phenomenal.
Personally I'm not a fan of The Wall as a concept album. Too much Waters and too little PF. But it's full of great tracks and top notch Gilmour guitar work!

This song was written around the 4 notes @ 4:45 David Gilmour was playing one day. Anything by them, studio or live is fantastic!

I like those Pink Floyd songs. Wish You Were Here is my favorite albums by them. You certainly gain lots of viewers with this band. Now i hope you will also went to discover some more obscure bands from the great prog period. I know Gentle giant or Van der Graaf or Greenslade won't bring you as many viewers, but their music will certainly surprise you. As far as good as Pink Floyd or Yes, but less known. I advice On Reflection for Gentle Giant, Arrow for Van der Graaf and Little Red Fry-up by Greenslade. 3 incredible songs.
Before this album was released in NZ side 1 was played on the radio. I heard it first time played in NZ and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. So beautiful, so incredibly unique. I was ready for side 2 the next night. One of the greatest albums ever. My favourite Pink Floyd album.

Saw Pink Floyd in 1977 for $10.60 at Soldier Field in Chicago. They played this entire Album as well as all of Animals and Money for an Encore. Amazing. When they were recording this song Syd actually showed up at the studio. They didn't recognize him at first. He was over weight and had shaved his eyebrows off. then he just left as quickly as he showed up.
That is EPIC....No way to see them now it it clear (due to deaths, animosity etc). 2005 was the very last time right?
Animals and the song titles from that album make me laugh. No clue if they have anything to do with real animals haha...
Someone took a photo of Syd in the studio. It's heart breaking. And yes , he did have eyes like black holes.
The track titles from Animals are applied to different groups of people. Dogs are businessmen and cutthroat who do whatever it takes to win. Pigs are politicians and people in positions of authority. They specifically reference three different "pigs". Margaret Thatcher, Mary Whitehouse (a Brit who spoke out against smut and anything deemed less than wholesome in media), but I can't recall who the third person is. Sheep is about the masses and are being urged to rise up against the Pigs and Dogs.
Wow, deep stuff! I assume the music is top notch per usual...

The ‘Wish You Were Here’ Album is best listened to from beginning to end.
It’s how it’s meant to be, just like ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’.
The Sax’ Player is Dick Parry, who turned 80 last month. (December).
He played on the Albums, ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘The Division Bell’ too.

Can’t remember if I mentioned, it’s the 50th Anniversary this year of this incredible Album. Hard to believe I bought it the day it was released, in 1973. And still get goosebumps now. Amazing. 🎶❤️🎶
Yea I had thought about it being 50 years already. Crazy that I heard the album name all my life, seen the image all my life, yet I won't hear the full album till 2023 when I'm almost 50 haha! Better late than never! Excited for The Wall, Animals and Meddle, well all of them really!

Another , to me, brilliant album is The Final Cut, again I feel must be listened to in its entirety, this to me, showcases Walters talent and is heartbreakingly beautiful
Floyd, Zepplin and Rush are The Big Three for me. Just unbeatable.
Vangelis's sound track for Bladerunner 1 was similar to the beginning, must be one of the reasons I like that movie.

You don't so much listen to Pink Floyd you experience them. Try Echoes live from Gdansk. last time David Gilmour and Richard Wright played it before Richard died. David will never play it live again in memory of his friend.

@@retroreactions.... it’s the classic original but the version from Gdańsk is as good but ends so poignantly it will bring tears to your eyes hearing the guitar and keyboard call and response knowing it is the last time it will ever be played.
Def gotta hear that one then, even if it's on my own. Others say I must hear studio version first, so it's hard to decide!

Retro, sitting in a bean bag with some good hash 1979, singing "remember when you were young" and then listening to David Bowie and Marc Bolan alongside Led zeppelin and Jefferson Airplane. The best Zeppelin song was "When the levee breaks"

i do love depeche mode for their own longevity and musicality, emotions etc, always will, PF are just on a different energy level and musicality in such a unique space that it's hard to compare them, pointless, but both are amazing, looking forward to the new DM drop this year
Yea hard to compare, but I just left a list for someone else of which DM songs remind me of PF musically or journey-wise, I'm sure you know them:
OK, here's my expert opinion haha. I'm biased because these are some of my favorites that often bring tears to my eyes. DM really doesn't have the sound of PF since they are heavily synth/electronic based songs with some guitar mixed in for the most part, but these remind me of PF style/feelings a bit for sure. Hope you can listen to several of them over time! All brilliant, in no particular order:
1) I Want It All- Beautiful song with a LONG epic otherworldly electronic ending (you know I love long drawn out parts)
2) Agent Orange- Beautiful instrumental that should get to your soul, the oldest song on the list, from 1987
3) Waiting for the Night- Soft gorgeous song with great sounds and vocals, again a long epic ending with the strangest harmonies out there!
4) Judas- Another soft but deep song thanks to heavy use of real uilleann pipes (from Ireland). Then a climactic what seems to be ending leads into another long electronic outro, which makes me cry it's so darn cool!
5) The Love Thieves- Another slower one, very relaxing. Great guitar work and sounds, epic guitar lines at the ending section.
6) Jazz Thieves- Instrumental, great sounds, kind of spooky, definitely that other worldly Pink Floyd vibe.
7) Shine- Yet another beautiful slower one. Great sounds as always.
8) Easy Tiger- Dark shorter instrumental. Nice little beat.
9) I Am You- Deep, great melody, dark vibe until a triumphant more happy ending that has brought tears!
10) Spacewalker- Great little instrumental that literally takes me on a journey into space. Pairs perfect with Echoes LOL
11) Cover Me- Another HUGELY atmospheric space song with amazing slide guitar throughout. Long cool ending that fades down.
@@retroreactions.... yes I have their songs and listen to many DM Songs and can totally empathize with that feeling of a soundscape built to tel a story, like behind the wheel, most of songs of faith and devotion, playing the angel, sounds of the universe, so many so I do get your reference to them. Another set of musicians to listen too is
Marillion (pre and post Fish) his solo works too, genesis, camel, Thomas Dolby among many others I listen too

That actually is something I’m wondering….since you said Depeche Mode was your favorite band. I know maybe two of their songs and know they are classified as Electronica, synth-pop, New Wave, Alternative. That’s VERY 80’s style. And yeah, I think you’d love some Portishead and Massive Attack. And it explains why you’re drawn to Pink Floyd…one of my two favorite bands. You probably like The Police and Talking Heads?
But what about hard rock? Zeppelin? That’s my other favorite band. They have softer songs that are lovely; The Rain Song, Ten Years Gone, That’s the Way, Fool in the Rain. And if you are drawn to Eastern scales and rhythms… then perhaps you would like Friends
But if you want other pathways , I understand
Def not a thrash metal fan, so we don't need to worry about that haha. I know alot of Police songs, but not much from Talking Heads. I need to add Zeppelin to the channel soon!

I heard years ago that while they hadn't seen Syd (founding member) for some time that he showed up at the studio while this was being recorded.
Funny I read that exact thing and forgot to bring it up in the video. He came to the studio on the very last day of mixing. Talk about fate and telepathy! It stated they didn't even recognize him at first. Dunno about that but I can see it due to the issues he had...
@@retroreactions.... If you do a google image search for "syd wish you were here", there are several examples of "early" Syd versus the Syd that turned up at the studio. Practically unrecognisable.

You should definitely check out Marooned (instrumental), High Hopes and Sorrow for the later Gilmour Floyd stuff. For SURE SURE SURE you must check out "Echoes" which was a few albums back, but encapsulates this same feel as Shine On. Four people creating that magic sound. I always love to see people's mind blown by Floyd! We'll steer you towards some Porcupine Tree which is kind of a more modern version of Pink Floyd. Voyage 34 for sure I'd suggest.

Wow, my Love for psychedelic rock starte with pink floyd, i've been listening to a lot of other stuff, lately a lot of King gizzard & the lizard wizard which is just great on it's own... But coming back to these pink floyd classics is just magical everytime. Pink floyd is just different than all the other ones

I was 12 in 1972, big Floyd fan, I took my first hit of acid, I loved it, my friends kinda freaked out a little bit o started taking it 4/5 times a week for the next decade, tripping listening to Floyd, doesn't get any better.
The way it already makes me feel, I can't even imagine hearing it while on mid altering substances...
I just discovered you and very much enjoyed watching you leave and go to Planet Pink Floyd, a place I've been visiting regularly for 45 years, since The Wall came out. And that was done on Purpose By The Lyricist Roger Waters who's the bass player for Floyd! And of course David Gilmore is the lead guitarist and usual main singer except for this song.
And of course Richard Wright the keyboardist the secret weapon of Pink Floyd and the glue that holds all the music together! And Nick Mason the perfect drummer. But if you want to hear some more incredible keyboard sounds do "welcome to the machine", from the Same album which follows the end of the first half of this song you're listening to on the album!!

As you'll no doubt discover if you haven't bts already, a lot of their early stuff pre-Dark Side can be a little challenging. Lots of avante garde noodling and music concrete experimentation. You seem to know a thing or two about the nuts and bolts of musical composition, so you might be able to hang with that stuff better than most, but it can be a little jarring after immersing yourself in the pure sonic perfection of their classic era. Glad to welcome you as a new fan!
Yea I've written 62 songs back in the days so I usually approach listening to songs from a musical direction first vs lyrical, as you see in my video I'm sure. I'm very opened minded musically, but definitely biased to music with keyboards/synths. So far they've delivered greatly with those instruments...
@@retroreactions.... Oh yeah, you'll be fine then. Rick Wright was even MORE prominent in their early days if y'can believe it, but once Gilmour found his feet w/ the band and slid into the co-lead role, Rick became more the foundation-layer and texture-maker. At first I found the stretch of albums from Piper at the Gates of Dawn to Ummagumma kinda bewildering and off-putting (with plenty of gems scattered throughout, dgmw), but once I absorbed all of their material and became a bit of a PF "scholar", I was able to appreciate their growth curve, which was more steady and linear than it appears upon first listen.
I guess I'll try their early stuff after the big 4!

It literally is ending too soon. This runs into the next track and then you flip it over and listen to the rest of it. Not really 1-5 then 6-9. More like all of side 1 then all of side 2. We didn't do singles. Only albums and always the whole thing in one sitting. Times have changed. Awesome reaction.

Difficult to pick out single Floyd tracks, you must listen to the full album start to finish, The Dark Side Of The Moon then Wish You Were Here, then The Wall, and when you can drag yourself away move on to the masters of Prog rock in the 70s- "Yes", Close To The Edge is considered to be one of their greatest masterpieces.

For floyd the absolute pinnacle are 4 albums done in the 70's and really need to listen to the whole album. Dark side of the moon, wish you were here,animals,and the wall. You should read a little about the albums first because there all concept albums especially the wall which I consider the King of concept albums. Then explore the albums for the 60's and the albums after the wall when Roger Waters left the Band.
Yes, those 4 seem to be heavy hitters. I should at least go in order if I won't do full album at once. Or maybe listen all at once and release it song by song. So much music, so much to decide!!

one can take it as a call for Syd Barrett to come out of hiding and shine as in make art again. But it can also be taken as a call for anyone sinking in solitude to come out of it.
but it wasn't a call for him to join Pink Floyd because they couldn't work with him before. Maybe if they took him back as a composer it would have been better.
What a shame...at least he seemed to have lived a fairly long life after PF in peace and solitude?

Do be aware of another band... started as a joke in 1987, Steven Wilson's "Porcupine Tree" was a prog tribute / mock / fun band who could play at this level. It was so well received that PT stayed together and have put out much original work. Now regarded as "the best band you've never heard of". It's excellent quality, different, original, must be over a dozen LPs out by now. As a listening experience, PF and PT are at the same level, individual tracks nosing out ahead... but, PT have lots and lots of albums.
Take a wiki look @ who Steve Wilson is - once you've listened to all PF's records strongly recommend trying some PT!
PS - PF album tracks flow into each other, so best listened to as whole sides.

@@retroreactions....Big-ish in US. Many US reactors love them, but prog is rather eclipsed by other genres today - hence more are listening to various sorts of metal. PT followed that and developed a heavier sound, yet still awesome long pieces with great instrumentals.
But PF still to be finished! Their "great" albums are, in sequential listening order: Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall - with earlier and later LPs rather "OK - rather meh, not-so-impressive". Some snatches of brilliance here and there, but the PF albums listed above are killer start to finish. PF sound changes, so these I've shown in time order so your ear can zone in to what's going on.
Be warned: the PF albums have songs, but are intended to be listed to in whole side listens - songs merge one into another (I blame CDs - these wanted to chop LPs up into "tracks" - yet PF songs flow one into another and carry prior context / musical themes from the preceding song). The worst LP of PF to mess up (by choosing any old track in the wrong order) is Dark Side. DSOTM is one of the 20th century's masterworks and is a concept album - really, all one song. The end of Side 2 is the start of Side 1; you can loop the entire album. Tip when reacting - listen to whole sides, yet release one or two songs as seperate reactions.
However, early Porcupine Tree "splits" from cloning the PF sound around Meddle - PT's "Sky Moves Sideways" sounds like a PF album which might have naturally dropped either side of Meddle. PT diverges later, but maintains awesomeness.

It took me a few tries to warm up to this song, because I was not always the genius you see before you. *snicker snort* It was early in my discovery arc (18 yo, 19?) where I'd only heard Division Bell, Dark Side and The Wall, and just...craved quicker dopamine hits, y'know? After learning about Syd and the band's history, and putting some life experience under my belt, it's now a Top 10 PF song, easily. I will say - hipster opinion alert - Part 6-9 I like better; it vies with Dogs and Hey You for top spot, and features my single favorite 3 or 4 minutes of music - any musician, any genre, full stop.
WHAT??? To know that YOU think that of 6-9 makes me SO interested. I thought maybe it was just a reprise of 1-5..

First and foremost, there is NEVER a good point to pause Pink Floyd!
So please don't stop/pause? Pink Floyd needs to be experienced from beginning to end to get the full effect - especially if you are listening to them for the first time. And especially if you want us to accompany you on your journey.
The reason Shine On was split in two on the record:
As they were finishing up their Dark Side tour they started incorporating three new songs to their live shows: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (which they played in full), Raving and Drooling (later to become Sheep on the Animals album) and You Gotta Be Crazy (which became Dogs on Animals). These were to make up the next album.
But, when it came time to sit down and start recording the next album Roger Waters was the only member dedicated in the studio, as he was going through a nasty divorce and just wanted to work. The rest were off trying to cope with the astronomical success of Dark Side, and were not as dedicated, as, in the back of their minds they were fearful of how would they ever top Dark Side's success? Plus they all had personal demons, as well (read Nick Mason's 'Pink Floyd autobiography' Inside Out, the best account of Pink Floyd from an insider).
When Roger thought about it, he wanted the next album to be centered around Shine On and felt the other two songs did not fit in with the theme of Shine On, which was alienation and absence. So he decided to cut them and wrote Welcome To The Machine and Have a Cigar for the new album. Gilmour was incensed, but, after Mason and Wright agreed with Waters he wrote Wish You Were Here with Waters after Waters heard him strumming the chords (just the same as he did when he heard Gilmour play those first iconic notes that start Shine On Part III). The next battle was the arrangement of the album. Waters wanted to split Shine On so it began and ended the album, which once again angered Gilmour. Waters put it to yet another vote and, as Mason and Wright agreed once again with Waters, Gilmour backed down. Since then, Gilmour Mason and Wright all have stated Wish You Were Here to be their favorite Pink Floyd album.

one of the main things that get me about Pink Floyd is how the main egos in the band wont let the keys have the spot ever ... they get intros and points but they never have a "firth of fifth " or a "whatever ... not naming names "

That's sad to hear....but what I have heard with the keys is VERY satisfying! For now I def plan to stick to only the 30 year window...that's where my musical heart lies. Loving this journey, especially with my eyes being further opened to progressive rock. This stuff I'm hearing is timeless and soars high in its own realm....
I hope you eventually get around to parts 6-9. They're better than 1-5, imo.

Pink floyd didn't write songs, they wrote albums. More specifically they wrote rock operas. This song didn't end too soon, it didnt end. It simply rolled into the next stage. The reason they sandwiched Shine the way they did because the whole album told the story of Syd. Opened with a lament to majesty of early era syd and their sadness to how that panned out. Then they wrote a couple of scathing movements about the industry that ruined him, wished he was still here then closed out with a heart breaking Shine on reprise.
You will never understand Pink Floyd by listening to individual moments (tracks). Pull up a beanbag and dim the lights and ride the waves bro

New visitor. If you listen to the lyrics, there is nothing positive about the chorus. It speaks of loss, tragedy, yearning. Read the words. Syd “reached for the moon” too soon, his eyes are now “like black holes in the sky” and he was lost to them. And they missed him terribly.

We all have different opinions..... for me, I prefer to hear great musicians and vocals to the manipulated recordings full of overpaid executive interference to the final product.
PF is one of the few bands who can be considered better live than on record.
One exception is Great Gig in the Sky....... best to do the ORIGINAL recording of Time first then running into Great Gig in the Sky....... pure brilliance.
Many will tell you to do the whole first side of Dark Side of the Moon first...... not wrong, but makes for a long review. lol
Echoes is different.......
For a music experience, do the album first.
For a life time experience, do live in Pompeii 1973 first..... both parts.
Echoes was NOT written with Pompeii in mind...... but the music fits perfectly with the empty Colosseum / Ampitheatre...... and conjures up the spirits and torment of the long dead gladiators and Christians.
Musically........ it just fits Pompeii like a tailored glove.
