The Queen Mary: A salute to a queen

- Correspondent Tracy Smith traces the history of the Queen Mary, one of the grandest of ocean liners -- from its place in the hearts of those who sailed her, to its illustrative wartime service.
I sailed on this beautiful Queen Mary. Unforgetable, South Hampton, UK to New York, US. What a treasure.❤
What a privilege it must have been.
Her owners just declared bankruptcy. Her future is now more uncertain than ever. We can’t allow this piece of history to disappear forever.
agreed, she shall be preserved.
Her owner is the City of Long Beach. A city can’t go bankrupt. The company that held the lease to operate the ship filed for bankruptcy, not the city.
My great grandfather helped build the Queen Mary
Nice
Niose ✌︎︎
Is he a live still!
Same
No he didn't
"She wouldn't see her again -"
oh no that's so s-
" - that is, not until after the war ended".
Made my heart skip a beat.
Alekzandah same!
I should visit one day. Not that far a drive from Santa Ana. I saw her from afar when I went to the aquarium of the pacific during a school field trip.
She is still very relevant to me personally, and will remain so for the rest of my life. I married my bride aboard the Queen Mary 3 years ago.
I had no idea of the Queen's speed. Quite impressive. These grand, opulent liners have been replaced with floating casino's. A repugnant insult to a once grand way to travel.
Her 'offspring', Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2, are some of the most legendary ships, themselves. They're all such incredible floating palaces. Oh and let's not forget the original Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary's younger sister!
Still beats an modern day airliner in terms of luxurious accommodations and space....
Now she a big spooky ghost ship
Painstakingly conceived and constructed with diligence, pride, and love.Long live the Queen!
Brian she’s the best of her class
I love learning about history in life
I agree
My Grandpa went On the queen mary after going to england
BRADEN DeFINO it was a British ship bud it was in the Uk back then
My Dad was on The Queen Mary during WWII he always spoke of how the pool was filled with soldiers -Bob Hope popped into his office and said hello - he also brought the war brides home -- those were his favorite memories to talk about to his family
It would be awesome to see the queen mary move again
There have been many great ships over the years, and this one's still-surviving owners, Cunard, are mad lucky to have owned most of them. Along with her fleet-mate the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary is one of the most famous liners in the world. So it's a real privilege that she's still around today. Now if only she can be restored to her former condition. Who knows: maybe whatever hauntings that may be still within her will leave...
I not seen that ship since the last time she left Southampton
The greatest ocean liner of all time.
I treasure the memory of my visits to this spectacular ship when I lived in the Los Angeles area...
I've loved in LA all of my life and have never been onboard of the QM. One day though I will.
my grandmother was a war bride from Belgium who came over on the Queen. Later my grandma brought her and my uncle back over on the SS United States.
Good thing Mary 2 Has safe that day but on the future 2029 we are making more ship titanic 2 or mary 3
*Bigger than the Titanic*
Me: Excuse me?
+Kelly Seger That's correct. Titanic wasn't the biggest ship ever, in fact her size was beaten roughly a year after she set sail.
Titanic was the biggest ship (I think) in 1912. Queen Mary was built in early 1930s. Ships got bigger in 20 years, not smaller.
Its true
we buy the Queen Mary.........
-and our own SS United States can't even get a paint job????
-what's up with that?????????
I agree. Come on a ship with our name on it. We can't restore it but we can restore this?!
well they did but like the video said she hasn't moved from that spot in about 50 years they gave her last paint job right before they moved her into the harbor
Despite the fact that you posted this query 4 years ago, I'll still answer. It has been planned by a couple of cruise line companies to actually return USS United States to service, the costs would be considerably higher than building a brand new ships. Out of fear that they'd never make a profit considering the restoration costs, the plans were scrapped. The companies were NCL and Crystal cruises.
My late mother sailed on her from NY to England, July 1949 aged 23. I have a picture of her on one of the decks.
It shatters my heart that I'll never get to be on this ship, it means the world to me and its leaving with history.
Just as magnificent and strong as her Majesty Queen Mary ❤️
OMG that is the real story of queen mary ship
Has man I love history of ships but the 2 that stand out to me are he mighty titanic and the queen mary I'm Scottish and I'm proud the queen mary was built in scotland

Do not go to The room 340b In 3AM
The queen mary was not at sea for 50 years omg
Where have I heard of bob hope before
All hale the Queen Mary!
(Hail) don't you mean.
I prefer the Normandie.
The reason it says a salute to a queen is because she is falling apart from her former glory.
The engine room is now keen to flooding and if nothing is done between the next 5-10 years she will most likely sink.
Long Beach is now looking for the millions of dollars it will take to repair queen Mary,so don't panic all of u Long Beach people they will get it sorted as soon as they can.
Evan Smith lol sink? She is sitting on the bottom of the lagoon she sits in. Sure maybe her boiler rooms will flood but she is again steadily lying on the bottom and is still watertight. The engine rooms will most likely stay in tact.
Meanwhile, on the east coast lies the only liner to spank Queen Mary, rusting away and people giving every excuse not to save her
I live in LONG BEACH CALI
OMG HAVE YOU STAYED IN THE QUEEN MARY EVEN THOUGH ITS HAUNTED ?
1: it's not haunted people just think it is because it's old. 2: ghosts ain't real. 3: wow your lucky you live near her!
Mr. Gnomicorn yes it is haunted. ive been ghost hunting there and caught things. there are ghost sightings all over the ship

This is so sad becuase it’s haunted
who is the guy singing the song
Well I don’t understand speed in knots but a little faster than a torpedo, I can grasp. Wow I had no idea that she was so fast!
The Queen Mary (originally intended to be named after Queen Elizabeth, but when Cunard told the King and the Queen Consort, Mary, they wanted to name the ship after England's greatest queen, Mary stepped forward and said she would be delighted. How embarrassing) was built in Glasgow, Scotland, where my Grandmother was born and raised. My Grandparents immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Brooklyn, New York, where my dad and his little sister were born and raised. During the war, when the Queen Mary was painted gray, when she would come into the New York Harbor, the kids in school would run to the window to see her sail by. My dad remembers that. So, I called my parents one day and told them to guess where I was. My dad said, You're on the Queen Mary. And, I said, Yes, but WHERE on the Queen Mary? Of course, my parents didn't know, and so I said, "In the QUEEN MARY SUITE! We were upgraded!"
My friend and I checked in late because we attended a concert in Hollywood, and so a young woman who worked at the front desk took us on a private tour, which included the First Class Swimming Pool where I saw and felt the infamous baby footprints on the tile floor that appear to be coming out of the deep end, and meander toward the dressing rooms, where they disappear. I walked into the dressing room, turned left, took 5 to 9 steps, and abruptly stopped, paused, spun around on my heel, and walked in the opposite direction, passing the doorway where I had just entered, and continued several feet and then turned right to step into a dressing room, turned to face outward where I could see my friend and our guide standing just a couple of feet away. I was in there a few seconds - perhaps 10 seconds, max, when I took one giant step forward and out. I immediately inhaled audibly and deeply for that first breath of air and quickly caught my breath. Immediately, our guide asked, very excitedly, What happened? Why did you turn that way, change your mind, and end up walking into this changing room? I said that I had no idea why. I wasn't thinking about what I was doing, it was just happening, and I was just as surprised at my own actions. She asked what happened when I stepped inside, and if it was a portal? I said I didn't know about a “portal”, but I felt pressure on every square inch of my body, pressing inward, and I also felt a sensation of a lot of people (spirits, not tangible people) rushing past me, headed in both directions, and swirling around me. I told her I realized that I wasn't breathing, which is the only time I felt even a little bit alarmed, and I told myself I had to step out, and with a little effort I was able to take a giant step forward and out. Our guide told me that many psychics had been on the ship and that some said the changing room I entered was a portal to the other side. I told her that I am not psychic, but I would admit to being intuitive at times, but I had no answers regarding that experience.
After our guided tour, our guide told us how to get into parts of the ship not on any tour, and after a few drinks, we headed out. We walked through a room that had no light source at all, and we merely used BIC lighters to make it across the room and out the other side. Looking back into the room, we could see our footprints walking through a thick layer of dust. No one had been in that room in decades. We also found a workshop where it appeared to be a place where they could repair furniture and such.
I will say this. At no time were we ever scared. And, yes, the Queen Mary is “haunted”, but not by anything negative or dark or harmful. There is some sadness there, but for the most part, spirits on board are there because they love the ship, not because they are trapped and destined to relive anything traumatic and deadly that had transpired there long ago.
How big is the queen Mary because titanic is. 882 feet. Long
the Queen Mary is 1,019 feet long and 118 feet wide
What is the protocol for people who are born in transit from one country to another, either on a ship or an aircraft?
sbaker190189 Interesting question. I would think that they would be British citizens. Time to Google.
They're citizens of Atlantis
commodore of the 'ss rough service' :-D
She’s Beautiful! But the Queen Mary two is slightly better.
Queen Mary, who’s the sister of her??? I think it’s Posideon.... I’m just guessing
@Joe Paul Gallico who wrote Poseidon Adventure was inspired to write novel as he was aboard Queen Mary having breakfast in dining room when it was hit by large wave sending furniture to opposite side if room. That's what imdb trivia says.
Yes and she played the ship so to speak in the movie
HI CBS its Jennifer in Maryland
We have a delimma here. I hope you can help and share the story.
The MV Astoria is up for sale for 5 million dollars. She's 73 years old built in 1944 ( formally the MS Stockholm) she's the oldest passenger liner transatlantic cruise ship in operation. Still fully functional with all her fittings. If not sold by February 2024 she will go to the scrap yard😢. Can you please share and help save the MV Astoria. Thank you so much
The Germans actually did hit Queen Mary with a torpedo. A dent was found in her hull after the war when she was being returned to being a liner.
A dent in the hull could have been docking damage. With 136 independent water-tight compartments, only a multiple of torpedo strikes would have stood any chance of stopping her. She was one of the safest ways to travel the world in the war, and could easily have survived a single torpedo hit. Even a hit in one of the engine rooms would have been unlikely to stop her as there were 2 engine rooms. And if the lookouts had seen the torpedo in time, she could have turned away and out-run it. She truly was the Queen of the sea, and there will never be another like her.
I believe you're thinking of the RMS Olympic, which indeed had a torpedo dent after WWI.
Who else wishes they were alive in the old days? Like Annie Frank days like the REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY OLD YEARS like not the 1900 not the 2000 LIKE OLD TIMES
Galaxy_ Bombshell erm... so you wanted to live through World War II? You wanted to live in constant terror of bombs and death? Or seeing your loved ones fall victim to the war? The 1930s and 1940s were not a fun time to live...
@@Drakelx55 no because I would want to meet my old family members and I also just like histrory dont juge me for what I would like
Yeah but did it have a golf place like the Titanic
I like Nachizzle and gwizzzy Did the Titanic have like a dozen of ghosts?
Titanic didn't have a "golf place"
+LinkleLine YT You might be thinking Titanic's squash court. I don't know if golf was played in there though.
2018 anyone?
The ship is more the 50 years old of course this ship can’t move she to week! That why are rock around the ship so the waves can’t hit the ship!
The Queen Mary's hull is still sound. The rocks are there to keep her from slamming up against the dock in bad weather. She isn't as big of a tourist attraction as she once was so the city of Long Beach is talking about selling her to Japan. If the deal goes through she will be towed across the ocean to its new home. My wife and I have sleep aboard her in the hotel and also been inside the Spruce Gosse which was right next door to the Queen Mary until 1992. Both tours were excellent. I would recommend anyone who is going to be in the Los Angeles area to take the tour of the Queen Mary before she is gone.
Now it's haunted
GREAT 😁

0:58 The Nerve-center is the Engine Room you mean...
Biggest mistake by Long Beach to classify the ship as a building. The conversion was a big mistake and disaster. Now the Queen Mary has no watertight compartments or doors to protect the ship from completely sinking due to the rust and corrosion. By gutting four of the ships six engine rooms, it affected her stability; the bilge pumps do not work to prevent flooding. A group of well intention-ed people didn't know what the heck they were doing to this once regal and wonderful ocean liner. The Queen Mary should have been dry docked every few years to clean and repaint her hull. The ship should have been preserved as she was and kept up. Her four once mighty engine rooms which gave her the Hales trophy would have been a great attraction for tourists but were gutted to make way for attractions that were a dismal failure. Now we may lose our precious QM due to incompetence, poor planning and just plain greed by the people who operated her.
jgdforesthills1 ship is undergoing extensive repairs right now. Also she is completely repainted now. The ship could not COMPLETELY SINK because there only about 40 feet between her bottom and the ground under her. I will be on the Queen Mary day after tomorrow for my birthday. I'm looking forward to seeing all the work that has been done. I'm very glad she being repaired!
@@stevefranklin8052 I hope you enjoyed your birthday aboard the Queen Mary - are you able to update us on her general condition? Any worries to report or was she looking good and structurally sound?

I been on the Queen Mary It's a small ship. Now said it's bigger than the Titanic. Than Titanic was small ship. That's a let down. The movie made titanic seem huge. Nope tiny ship the titanic.
