  • Well folks today we'll be discussing the art deco speed demon of the Atlantic. Today she rests as a hotel in Long Beach in California (Yuck!) and is loaded to the brim with history. I'm an idiot with a microphone, not a historian, so don't take this video too seriously. Stick around.

    2) From 2002 to late 2010 I managed a high rise complex. One of the buildings had a floor that looked exactly like the promenade deck of the QM. I went to that floor often.

    It is the largest ocean liner out of the only 7 (technically 9, both numbers according to Wikipedia) ocean liners left in existence. Really makes you think when you realize that out of the hundreds of ocean liners in history, only the Queen Mary, The United States, the Rotterdam and 4 (6) other ocean liners still exist. It’s an absolutely fantastic ocean liner, and I hope it doesn’t meet a bad fate soon, along with the United States.

    Growing up in Southern California, the Queen Mary always stood as the best sight to fulfill my love for ships and the era of the 1930s-1940s, I love world history and maritime history, learning about Art Deco architecture through her halls and honestly, it’s a style that’s now nostalgic to me thanks to the times I visited. The recent news on how she’s doing was heartbreaking to learn and I hope Long Beach can fix her up..though with everything happening world wide, I don’t know how possible it would be.

    • @user-lv7ph7hs7l
      @user-lv7ph7hs7l Год назад +1

      I don't know, there is good minimalism, like mostly white with dark wooden accents such as mahogany or even ebony. That style is popular on sailing yachts, I think it looks waaaaay better than most of art deco. I don't... it's just... too random for me. I even prefer the old style, Edwardian, Louis etc... And I am half a Frenchman and adore the Normandie. I much prefer the art deco of her than QM. I can't really put it into words why and I promise it's not because I'm French, my favourites are all British, Aquitania, Mauretania, Olympic, Britannic, the one who must not be named etc... I just don't much care for any of the Queens for some reason. I love them but more as good friends. The Normandie elicits feelings too explicit to detail.
      QE 1&2 is the same. Never really scratched the itch, despite the fact that I find them marvelous from an engineering perspective.
      But conservative without the beauty of the old ships. Straight hull and bow... not the sleek hydrodynamic form of Normandie. She never needed as much power to hold those speeds above 30 knots. That hull sliced through the ocean as if it was air, the bow wave cancelling out. Really in a way 50 years ahead of other ships. And turbo electric too. And the art deco is... well I like it. It's okay. QM looks gaudy as hell on the inside. Normandie, though not my preference, I find tasteful. Better a little less than too much. I'm sorry. It's my personal misguided opinion.

    FWIW, the Spruce Goose was moved to Oregon in 1992 from the dome next to the QM. The dome is now used as a terminal for cruise ships. There is one other former Cunard liner, the QE2 (from the late 1960s) now a stationary hotel in Dubai. There's also the SS Rotterdam (circa late 1950s), now a floating hotel in Rotterdam. Meanwhile, the SS United States (circa 1950) is the only other liner left from the first or early 2nd half of the 20th century. But it's a rusting hollowed-out hulk in Philadelphia, so its future is in doubt. Now sure how the business plan for the SSR is doing, but the one for the QE2 seems shaky. As for the QM, its business plan since 1967 has seen plenty of ups & downs.

    Finally got back to watch this. Cunard's not the only one who had some catching up to do. Only in this case it's "has."
    Quick fact-check about the Oceanic III: she was NOT turned into the Britannic or the Georgic. The Britannic began construction before her, and Oceanic's keel was then dismantled. There is no evidence that suggests it was recycled and used in some format on the Georgic. It's a possibility that it did happen, and I wouldn't be surprised considering that's pretty much free steel. But it could just as easily have been turned into a Rolls Royce. At least according to the experts on Encyclopedia Titanica.
    Yes, the Mary was and still is a heck of a ship. Perhaps the greatest ocean liner to ever sail the seas and the most famous of them all whose name isn't Titanic.

    If you do a Q and A, here's my question: How come you sometimes call the titanic "rms clickbait"?

    • @NauticalStudy
      @NauticalStudy  2 года назад +1

      1) I’ve thought of doing a q and a before…
      2) I call it that because it has been taken by the media and RUclips channels that pretend they know anything and say things like it was switched with Olympic. Titanic is used for clickbait, and that’s a true shame.

    I agree with the indoor areas. The art deco style is not my type either. What happened to the ultra detailed Victorian style that Olympic, Lusitania had? Is this what we call evolution?
    Just look at the luxury of nowadays "luxurious" ships. They have absolutely no detail on their walls.
    While I do love the QM, I cannot unsee that her indoor areas could have been so much better
