    As a huge fan of Ocean Liners, i can't help but be happy this majestic piece of history is preserved. So many of these ocean linears deserved to be preserved too but were sadly scrapped or destroyed. I wish the mayor of Philadelphia saw it like mayor Richardson here, instead of letting S.S. United States rot...the pride of America, the fastest ocean liner ever to be built, still holding on to that Blue Riband after decades and it's sitting gutted, collecting dust and rust in an anonymous wharf the owners can't even afford to rent. Save the United States like they saved the Queen Mary.

    My mother moved from Germany to the United States around 1950 and saved up money for ocean trips between the countries before finally marrying in 1959 and staying in Illinois. Her favorite ship was the SS United States and that ship lingers on but I’m pretty sure is doomed to be scrapped rather than restored. It’s good to see at least one old liner preserved (the United States is relatively new, finished in I think 1951).

    I highly recommend people watch Alex The Historian’s documentary on the Queen Mary. It is so well done and very interesting! He also covers her restoration. I know this is a short news segment and they only touched on her role in WWII but she was absolutely critical to allied nations winning. To this day she still holds the record for most people on board. This record was broken during the war with 16,000 soldiers aboard. Currently the largest ship in the world, that was just launched this year, can only hold 7600 passengers. Our air craft carriers don’t even have that many people aboard!
    The Queen Mary was brilliant in out running other ships. If it wasn’t for her quickness and resilience, conflict would have lasted far longer.

    The ship is clean looks better than she has in decades. But she is incredibly overpriced. I recently spent more money staying 3 nights aboard her than I did on a recent 5 night cruise to Cabo. And that's including the bar tab. They need to lower their prices. Very greedy operators on the ship these days. And never believe a word they say when they say the profit will go back into the ship. Every company who has ever operated the old girl has embezzled her millions.

    Just saw your report on the Queen on the West Coast! It makes me sick CBS weekend news doesn't a do a report on the more deserving and deteriorating fastest ocean liner on the East Coast, The SS United StatesStates and its deterioration at the dock on the East Coast. Why isn't the United States getting the same attention that a British vessel is getting?

    • @CosmicCleric
      @CosmicCleric 26 дней назад +5

      The reason is because the SS United States is a lost cause, I'm sorry to say it but its true. Nothing can be done to help that rusting shell. Not taking pot shots at it, I'm just stating what I know to be true.
      That being said, you reference the SS United States as a "more deserving" ship? Why? It won a race, fabulous. But Queen Mary helped win World War II, and before SS US took the Blue Riband, Queen Mary had held it too. Why on earth would SS United States be "more deserving"?

    • @Unownshipper
      @Unownshipper 25 дней назад

      Sad to say, but what's the story? The Queen Mary is receiving the care it needs and is profitable once again; it's a full story. The SS United States is all but doomed: no one is preserving her, no one has a viable revitalization plan for her, and even her dock space is trying to jettison her. CBS isn't interested in being the beggar's bowl for the ocean liner, their interest is covering the work other people have done to secure the Mary's future. It's up to someone who really cares (and has a couple million lying around to spare) to save the United States.

      You don't get how tourism works, do you? The Queen Mary was being run by a series of operations companies that were pocketing the profits instead of investing them in the care of the liner. The Mary can run on a profit and in fact is currently, thanks to the city taking over it and putting competent managers in charge. If the city had lost the ship, they'd have lost a huge destination atraction and source of revenue for surrounding businesses as less people would come visit Long Beach port.

    This ship never made money for Long Beach. It can never sail again, it has costs the city millions of taxpayers money.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 26 дней назад +17

      The Queen Mary in Long Beach has NEVER had a dollar of TAXPAYER money spent on it. ALL money spent on the ship was done with private enterprise, namely money from Long Beach's oil fracking operation, and a tideland's fund -which is not from taxpayer money either. As for your comment about cruise ships coming there, there are plans to expand the cruise terminal in Long Beach to accommodate up to four ships at the same time, all without having to get rid of the Queen Mary. And like @9TDF said, the Queen Mary has been turning a profit ever since it reopened in April of 2023. The new management replaced the decades of corrupt management that always preferred to neglect the ship, and their techniques of running the business honestly has allowed the ship to actually turn profits. They are estimated to make about $12 million in profit by the end of 2024.
