  • In this episode of our series Under the Radar, ‪@craftandtailored‬ s very own watch market weathervane, Tyler Vanes, takes a good look at a bona fide piece of military history: A 1940s Vertex Military Watch powered by a cal 59 movement. This watch is from the so-called “Dirty Dozen” of watches that were commissioned by the Ministry of Defense in its effort to issue battle-ready wristwatches to British troops fighting in World War II. It’s a beautiful watch that should drive any history or militaria buff wild, but it’s also a watch that is brilliantly well-suited for contemporary casual wear. One thing is for sure, it doesn’t matter where its hands are pointed -- it’s always Nazi hunting time with a “Dirty Dozen” mil watch on your wrist! Tyler explains just why he thinks this Vertex is more than just a fantastic watch, but an undervalued piece.

Radium dials scare the 💩 out of me. The radium isotope used has a half-life of about 1,600 years, so even very old radium dials remain essentially just as radioactive as when originally painted 100 years ago, whether or not they still are luminous.

MoD regulated watches were released after WW2. Requirements were first made in 1945, first watches from 1948.

Hi. They are today available between 2000-2600 €. Take care that in its back the number right below the so called broad arrow like the peace pacifist movement's symbol just missing the line to twelve Position and with no circle around it. It consists of lines to 5,6 and 7 o'clock only.
Make sure that the upper one of the two rows of numbers has its last three numbers engraved in the key (the lug, where you fix your Nato-strip) up on the left side. If the three numbers correspond the watch most probably still has got its original caseback. Ehen there is no number of three ciphers engraved - looking at the back - in the position of 11.00 o'clock... the watch can be a fake, a so called Frankenwatch.
