Battle of the Blues: Blue Buffalo Vs Diamond pet food

- In this video we explore the guaranteed analysis and label break down of Blue Buffalo dog food vs Diamond dog food. This formula of Blue seems to meet most of our expectations. Unfortunately, after contacting Diamond, we have found that this diet is severely over supplemented in Calcium and Phosphorus. Excess of these minerals is very detrimental for pets, especially those with kidney disease or other conditions that put strain on the renal system. In this video we also discuss how certain OTC diets are not suitable for allergy food trials.

Thank you for your reviews. I do enjoy them. Have you reviewed the 4health dog food from Tractor Supplies Company?
Not yet! but you are the second person to ask me and I get asked all the time at my practice so I think ill do an official review on that one next
Thanks for everything you do for all the Melrose babies. Trixie, Becky, and Pippi love you all! xoxo
Your welcome. It was good seeing you and the girls today. Makes us all happy.
Hi doc, Can you do a video comparison on Blue buffalo puppy large breed dry food and Wellness puppy large breed dry food inclusive grains?
3 years later they now have the calcium and phosphorus listed on the site at 1.2% calcium and 1.0% phosphorus. But still dont list it on the bags.
Hello love your videos. Was wondering if you have a video on best dog food for skin allergy or any recommendations
Do you mean food allergy, if so I recommend a prescription diet, no otc diets will be sufficient and these diets should be fed on the direction of the vet treating your pet because prescribed diets not only treat, but also are used as a diagnostic tool. Thanks for watching!
@@AnimalDocRea❤
Can you do a comparison between "Taste of the Wild: Pacific Stream (28 Ib)" and "Member's Mark Exceed Grain-free Dry Dog Food Wild-caught Salmon & Peas (30 Ibs)"?
I can do a review, however grain free is never recommended due to the link to heart disease so it may not be much of a review. If you haven’t yet, check out my video on grain free.
@@AnimalDocRea I heard about the grain free stuff for the first time 2 days ago from another video. I'll check yours out. It's always something.
Hello! I’d appreciate some help finding the ideal puppy food for my current- 4 month old GSD! Where did you find the nutritional ranges? What should I look for in a growth formula for large breed puppies? Any brands in particular I should avoid? so far, I’ve tried Stella & Chewys Puppy Recipe, then switched to Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream for puppies and am just now switching to Blue Buffalo Puppy recipe for Large Breeds. Any help would be appreciated! a video comparing the three would also be insightful!
I’ve got explanations on each life stage in my how to understand labels part one and two. This should help
@@AnimalDocRea I will check those out, thank you!!
@@AnimalDocRea thank you again! I checked those out- and was wondering if you will be doing a video on brands that have done food trials? If you can do a video on the Blue Buffalo Large Breed for puppies that’d be great too!
Have you ever looked at Joy dog food performance or high energy? Joy vs Valu pak black bag dog feed would be cool. Thanks for all your info
I have not heard of that one, Where do you buy it?
What do you prefer as far as the best puppy food. I have a Boykin spaniel
My favorite foods for puppies are science diet puppy or Purina pro plan puppy, then transition to adult at about 9 months. These brands are the only few that do feeding trials to substantiate their claims.
@@AnimalDocReathat’s very interesting. So many people advise against those brands.
Regarding the Nutrician Charts on dog food bags (some show CALCIUM while some show CHLORIDE), are CALCIUM & CHLORIDE ever lumped together?
No, chloride and calcium are two totally different things
The Blue Buffalo has peas in it. Is this still a good food to consider? Should I be concerned at all with foods that contain legumes- with regards to DCM?
Anything labeled "grain free" should be avoided due to ongoing research and links to DCM. I wouldn't avoid something just because it has peas as an ingredient as long as there are other grains to balance it out.
Just got 2 Aussie puppies (male and female) and I’m indecisive which puppy food would be best..could you review Orijens puppy vs Hills Science puppy? Also are they considered small or large breed for food?
They would be regular, large breed is over 70 lbs at maturity
Is there a dog food you recommend for chocolate labs?
Ok this Chanel I try not to make any specific recommendations because every pet to has unique circumstances. I encourage you to read the AAFCO statements, avoid marketing traps, and feed the correct daily calories. Avoid diets marketed as all life stages and try and find a food that underwent a feeding trial. Of course it should fall in the recommended range for parameters in the guaranteed analysis as well.
Hi. I noticed you didn’t use the dry matter conversion here. Would that make a huge difference for the scoring? Thanks!!
PS! This is tricky… Blue Buffalo’s website says they do feeding trials and then start talking about WASAVA and AAFCO. But if it doesn’t say it on the bag, they haven’t actually done the AAFCO testing? Is that for other testing then?
This was one of my first videos and I wasn’t doing those conversions at the time but if it’s really close I’d do the conversion, if it’s several percent off it won’t make much difference. You can always do conversion to be sure
Most likely, you would have to call for clarification. It means they either feeding trialed a single bag and can’t say it across the board, or they did their own version of feeding trialing that does t meet AAFCO standards so they can’t list it on the AAFCO statement because that’s a legal statement and must be accurate
Thanks so much for your reply. I really appreciate the time you give to pet owners
I'm needing about 40 pounds of food for around $40 what would you suggest, or as close as you can get with the right ingredients? I'm have a golden pup ready for the transition and had bought the Naturals brand, the winner of this battle is way more expensive. Please help, I need something that is good but affordable at or near the pricing mentioned. Thanks if you can field this question, I thank you for your time. Robert
I don’t really focus too much on pricing, I do mention it usually in my videos but overtime prices change. Your going to have to use the parameters we discuss and find a bag in your budget and see what fits.
@@AnimalDocRea Thank you for taking a moment to respond.
Could you do a review of diamond large breed puppy lamb & rice I’m getting a cane corso in the future and was recommended this by the breeder but would love another opinion
yes, I will I have plans to do more puppy reviews
Please do more of the diamond naturals. Love to see a updated review on the chicken meal and rice or lamb and rice!!!!!
My dog started to get a ton of itchy skin and cant stop the urge to scratch a lot after switching to diamond, and their vet says as well is not any kind of bugs on them, it's their food.
could be, for sure. glad you and your vet are on top of it.
Blue buffalo may be slightly better but it also costs a significant amount more, a 34lb blue buffalo bag is gonna run you $65, while a 40lb diamond naturals bag is gonna only cost you $45, better than purina pro plan but cheaper than blue buffalo? Diamond naturals all the way!!
looks like you did some research of your own. good work.
@@AnimalDocRea funny enough, purina pro plan is not cheap either! It’s similarly priced to blue buffalo, and clearly blue Buffalo is the better option between those two
I try to save money too. The problem I have is..... what if a dog poops twice as much and all that savings is really just filler? Does anyone calculate dog foods based on that waste? And each dog might react differently. I'll pay more for dog food if it actually comes out cheaper due to less fillers
So the whole filler thing is a major marketing ploy. There actually is no such thing as filler because pet foo companies don’t want to waste money on putting things in that add no value, they simply would just leave them out and save the cost. As far as stool volume goes, this mostly has to do with fiber and research. Companies that do lots of research and market analysis actual consider stool volume in thier formulation. For example, up north a major food company (I won’t mention a name) told me they invest signifant funds to make smaller stool because there are no yard ( like in New York City for example) and people have to bag up stool. Consumers asked so they delivered. So yeah, long answer, but there are 100% foods aimed at smaller stool, but it has nothing to do with “fillers”
@@AnimalDocRea So if there's no such thing as filler, that would mean to me that the ingredient list and the order of the ingredients would mean nothing at all. A better quality dog food company wouldn't need to highlight certain things on the front of the bag, such as meat content, etc. Then chicken vs chicken meal wouldnt have to be advertised. Certain companies that don't use any corn wouldn't need to tell anyone that fact, if corn is as good as meat, it should probably be the first ingredient because corn is generally a lot cheaper than meat.
So which one is better ?
I think both were pretty good, depends on what your looking for.
Hii do you know what would be a good food for a adult shih tzu ?
I don’t really recommend anything per se on this channel, I’m more interested in giving you the tools to sift through marketing traps
Hi We would like to know which dog food brand you actually do recommend....it would be more helpful to us than just the brands you do not Thanks
I don’t make recommendations, I teach you and empower you to understand how to evaluate the foods for your own personal pets. Because I am not your vet and do not know the specifics about your pets needs it would be inappropriate for me to make a recommendation. I do have a playlist of foods that meet the standards closely you may find as a good starting point.

@@AnimalDocRea awesome thank you!:)
Could you review Fromm for puppy Large breeds
Yes I will. Thanks for asking, I’ll try to get it recorded I the next week or so.
Comming Thursday🤗
Fromm is great food........
Can you please do a review on Taste of the Wild dog food?
I will, any particular type. Adult, puppy?
@@AnimalDocRea The salmon version for adults. It's one of Amazons best sellers and I was thinking of giving it a try. Thanks!
Taste of wild is really good Quality food, Diamond dog food makes it. It’s One of my favorite foods....
December 2023 price for that Blue Buffalo about $65 for 30lbs bag... eek!
I thought taurine was important for dogs and that is why ppl frown upon grain free? And why grain free cause heart conditions because of lack of taurine?
To keep it simple, you are exactly correct. Grain Free should be a no go.
Plants and grains don't have taurine. Taurine is only found in animal muscle meat. Cats need about 100 mg per day. My cats eat 4 oz of chicken thighs, 220 mg of taurine, twice a day. I go around on this, with vegan cat feeders all the time.
These foods are made by same manufacturer.
No, they are not. Blue is made by General Mills and diamond is made by schell & kampeter.
Next time you do a Battle of brands pick 2 brands with same Meat proteins & similar Ingredients, because the battle isn't fair.
You've picked Blue Bufflo-Chicken & Diamond Natural-Beef you know beef is higher in bone then Chicken, Chicken is a cleaner meat then Beef.
So the Calcium & Phosphorus is always higher in reat meats as theyre from larger boned animals..
Maybe do a more honest review next time.. Compare kibble brands with same meat protiens & similar ingredients..
The video was from 4 years ago and was the first food video I ever did. I now use the pss scoring system so all foods are analyzed on the same scale.all my reviews are honest because I use numbers, not emotions. the food is what it is and provides a nutrient profile that is either ideal or not, irregardless if ingredients are the same. Nutrients are what matter. If the minerals are excessive they are excessive.
Do 4health
I actually get asked about this one a lot at my practice. I think I will do this one next!

diamond makes blue buffalo
General Mills owns Blue Buffalo, not Diamond. bluebuffalo.com/about/news/general-mills-complete-acquisition-of-blue-buffalo/#:~:text=General%20Mills%20Completes%20Acquisition%20of,Blue%20Buffalo%20Pet%20Products%2C%20Inc.
