I've never read a book so fast! ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.
Feed a previous dog purina branded dog foods and she lived a happy healthy long life for a medium size mix . Her life expectancy for the breed mix was 12 years and she lived to be 18 years. I don’t think it’s always about the food when it comes to a dogs health and not everyone can afford to feed the more premium brands.
You are absolutely right, and I share this video not to shame anyone or bash a brand, rather, to inform on how i make my personal choices. From there, my community can decide how to best feed their pet. My goal is to inform, not recommend. I am so happy your dog lived to 18! Two of the oldest living dogs lived to nearly 30 years old, and I am on my way to help as many dogs live to 30 (and beyond) as possible! And you are right, food is absolutely not everything. Genetics, environment, all play a role!
I feed my cats purina brand kitten( the natural one and for m6 full grown cat I buy purina grain free with chicken and egg. Also I stop by petco to buy clearance on grain free canned kitten food. The three cats just share everything and they are so healthy. As for m6 dogs I buy high end brands like blue and farmers dog at the grocery outlet. For example I get the brand blue dog food that normally cost over 50$ for 38 pounds and I get it for under $30..38 pounds 😊
I tried Orijen, Farmina N&D, and Acana… my dog had soft stools with all of them. I went back to Taste of the Wild every time and her stools are solid. She’s a happy healthy 3 years old German shepherd.
With better natural foods like raw diets also, soft stools are common for some time until their stomachs digest it better as it’s first time they eat something .. healthy ! My guess is money for you, or should have simply researched basic dog care to know about soft stools with new foods… you are an abuser if you can’t afford the best smh ! Like don’t adopt any animal if you fail the basic task of providing f a quality food !
@@TheBaBaTV man i looked at your comment history and you are the most annoying person I have had the displeasure of laying my eyes on. Your projections are weird, and your assumptions are like flies on shite, get professional help and stay out of peoples pockets.
I appreciate the informative nature of this video, but it would also help if you mentioned alternative brands that were more budget friendly to pet parents that are financially challenged. A lot of these brands are ultra expensive.
Have you ever considered the idea that owning a dog is expensive? It's kind of like having a child. You can choose to just have a child and there is nobody that will try to stop you. If you don't earn enough money to be able to give your child the best of everything then that child will for sure be limited and excluded from living a better life than you were able to provide them. But that doesn't stop people from choosing to have a child. I find it hard to understand why so many parents out there think that they have the right to complain about not being able to afford to give their children the best of everything when they never earned enough money before they decided to have that child. They just don't have the right to complain about it. So when a person decides to have a child anyway, without the means of being able to take care of that child, that person is acting irresponsibly and everyone in that family will suffer for them making that choice. The same thing goes for dogs. If you can't afford to put in the time and be able to afford the hefty cost of owning that dog, then you should not own a dog because you will only be hurting that dog in the long run. Everyone loves their pets and wants to give them the best there is to offer. But owning a dog is not cheap. It's actually very expensive and there is no way around it. It's entirely up to you on whether or not you are going to be able to give your pet the best care possible just like it would be if you decided to have a child and if you can't afford to buy quality food and spend lots of time with them to see to it that they are getting the best, then you should not put yourself in a position of having to do that. You should have taken the time to consider all the costs of owning a dog before you got one and you didn't. Everyone has the right to own a dog or have a child but nobody has the right to dictate the costs involved in that decision. That is something you should have researched better before taking on that responsibility because that is something every responsible person would do before taking on such an incredibly important decision and you obviously didn't. So you don't have the right to complain about the costs involved because those costs were probably too high for you to be able to afford before you decided to take on the responsibility of owning a dog with prices only going to get higher in the future. So it's too late to whine about it. You made that decision now it's up to you to find a way to earn the money needed to do it. Or you can just keep on complaining about the costs as you and your pet suffer for your bad decision because complaining about it now will not help change your situation. Only one thing will change it and that's for you to find a way to earn more money. If you can't do that then you should not have chosen to own a dog in the first place because owning a dog has always been something expensive and you should have known that before taking on that responsibility. So you have nobody to blame but yourself for taking on a responsibility that you clearly were never able to afford in the first place. I would hope that you learned from your mistake but you probably didn't learn anything at all and will keep making decisions that you can't afford to have and will still be complaining about the costs as if it's your right to dictate what the costs should be for you. You have no rights on what those costs will be at all because that's how capitalism works. People have the right to charge the highest amount of money they want for their products. It's up to you to be able to afford them and if you can't then you don't get to buy their products or services from them. If you don't like their prices then you need to go make a better product yourself for the prices you can afford. You have that right. So good luck with that. Something tells me though that you will not even come close to making a better product for less money. After all, you are the one who is complaining here so I'm assuming you already know that you can make that product. That's what a responsible person would do. Because you have to be able to back up your complaint. Why would you complain about today's current prices unless you already knew that you could put out an equivalent or better product for less money? Because it's not fair to expect other companies to do that for you when you can't do that yourself. So it wouldn't be fair to expect those companies to offer their products for less money since you couldn't do that either. Why would you ever complain about those companies' prices when you are not able to put out an equivalent product for less money? That would be an incredibly stupid thing to expect from those companies which makes your complaint not valid at all. We all want to be able to afford everything that we want but we don't live in a perfect world. We live in a capitalist society which is far from perfect and if we don't like that then we need to change it. So now you have two goals to take on. Good luck changing anything in this corrupted society. The only way we change that is when more than 60% of the people are willing to unite to fight back against it. And nobody in this country gives a shit about anyone else to do that. So if you are not already a winner here then you are a loser and you will have to just wait till the winners drop the ball and destroy it themselves. Till then you just take care of yourself the best you can and wait for it to collapse. Because complaining about it will only make you look like a bigger loser than you probably are and the rich will come for you like a bunch of sharks looking for an easy meal. These are all facts like them or not. You can continue to live your life in denial of them but I feel knowledge is power which is why I'm telling you this. I'm not happy with the way things are in this country but I don't get to make the rules and I learned a long time ago that complaining about them hurts you more than trying to play by the system they created. Change will come but it won't happen overnight and you still have to live here till that change comes which can take decades or maybe centuries to happen. So it's up to you whether or not you are going to live a good life here in the meantime. So empower yourself with as much knowledge as you can and make the best of the little bit of time you have here on this earth because you only get to do it once. Do it wrong and you have nobody to blame but yourself. The system is completely rigged against you so your odds are not good that you will do well. It will take lots of knowledge and a lot of luck for you to do well. And complainers who don't have valid complaints usually live their lives struggling badly and for the most part, are not happy at all.Doers on the other hand have much better odds of finding happiness while they are here. It's no guarantee but there is no guarantee of anything in this life other than you will die someday and that's it. Every decision we make can have long-lasting effects for the rest of our lives. It's never enough to just follow the crowd and then expect for everyone to live happily. Some might and some might not. So you need to think about the decisions you make a little bit harder so that you can think them through before you make those decisions. Because most people don't do that and you will find yourself in a much better place in life if you take the time to do that. Because complaining about things that you have no power to change never helps and makes you even a bigger loser.
Thomas wow ur really Lomg comment was insulting unnecessary judgemental and 1 big blob of a bunch of inspirational quotes 1 right after th other...youtube has all kinds don't they
Just watched your video and although it was informative it was somewhat disappointing to watch. You come off somewhat condescending. Most people can’t afford 47 dollars for two pounds of food much less 180 to 200 for a 22 pound bag. I understand you probably get sponsored by some of these companies so you push them. We do our absolute best for our two perrihijos(dog children). We give them numerous supplements and plenty of fresh vegetables and fish. To say these boys are well taken care of is an understatement.
Information is important. Don't attack the messenger. Whether or not she gets kickbacks from these companies is irrelevant. Look at the ingredients and see what makes sense to you. The garbage she is indicating is in the standard brands is the fault of the brand not the messenger. It is so you can make better informed decisions and this is very similar to the human nutrition world. Perhaps you can use the higher quality food as a topper or alternate food days. Adding in some healthier foods and reducing some unhealthier foods without making a complete switch to the most expensive would seem to me like a step in the right direction.
rachel, you are so great!! i started watching you a couple months ago when i got my new puppy and you have helped us out A LOT… thanks to you my puppy eats a clean healthy diet and is happy and healthy. keep doing what you love!!
The reason why Purina splits the corn is because corn gluten meal and whole grain corn are two different ingredients that serve two different purposes. Corn gluten meal is the protein extracted from corn and consists of around 70% protein. Whole grain corn is just corn which has a much lower protein value and is mostly a carbohydrate. Corn gluten meal is a very good protein source and since the nutritional value of corn gluten meal is completely different from whole grain corn, it’s listed separately on an ingredient label. Don’t confuse corn gluten meal with regular corn because they are literally two completely different ingredients
My issues are they don't use NON GMO grains and they need to knock the CARBS DOWN!! Come on Purina Seriously by now you can step it up and STOP PUTTING CRAP INTO THE PET FOODS!!!!
corn is NOT a "food" dogs should be eating. NO wolf would be eating corn, and most corn is GMO now, so that is NOT even fit for human consumption. It is filler, why would you feed filler? Purina is trash, and spends more on marketing the trash than what they put in their products. Just my opinion, keep your Vet rich, and your dog compromised is not logical.
I can't afford to pay $180 for a 20 lb bag of Carna 4! Seriously, give your dog's cooked chicken or beef, brown rice, sweet potatoes and no snack s from any bag and you will be OK. 40 year dog owner....
I appreciate that you have provided a food list that is also available in Canada. Thank you so much Rachel for everything that you do for dog owners and our companions.
I feed a premium kibble and supplement it with chicken, fresh clean sardines, broccoli, blue berries, goats milk and fresh broth. My base kibble is 50% Carna4 which has no synthetics. I take the middle road. More convenient and budget friendly but still providing the opportunity for my dog to have good nutrition. She is thriving and very healthy.
Why do dogs need goats milk ?...I thought milk period wasn't good for them ........and any suggestions on what to give ..... when a dog gets a little indigestion.....? Ty....very informative information....
Hi Rachel, love your videos! Just speaking from my personal experience, we tried feeding Carna4 to our small dog, and no matter what we did (we transitioned her very slowly), she would always throw it up. So instead, we have started feeding her The Honest Kitchen Whole Grain Chicken Clusters for Small Breeds, and she has done very well on it (no throwing up, thank goodness). It is 100% human grade, cold pressed, roasted & gently dehydrated (so I feel good about giving it to her). Also, we give her a side of raw goats milk (which she loves), and we will occasionally add fresh food toppers (such as sardines, etc.). It is working well for us so far!
I pay $31 a lb. for essentially high nutrition dog foods. Human grade food. Raw freeze dried maintaning nutrients, not over processed. My dogs are healthy with long life span. Non gmo, non synthetics
@@desf853 yeah but a person that buys a dog for less than a 1000 isn’t and most likely can’t afford it so cheap food is for cheap dogs. Never saw a cheap dog eat steaks
Purina is like the McDonald's of the dog food world, its popular, available everywhere and comes with a reasonable price tag. In the end, just like McDonald's, it can have a negative effect on health if consumed over a long period of time
I took your recommendation when I looked through your dog food list and switched our puppy to Farmina lamb, blueberry, and oats. He was originally on paw tree that was chicken and oatmeal but he was scratching constantly. Farmina is working for him so far. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. ❤
I adopted my whippet puppy from a breeder who is also a vet and she recommended purina pro sport. I don’t think dog food is a black or white, feed them this not that issue. I appreciate your content and love your videos!
@@rhondennis979 oh wow, that’s totally out of my reach! Yes need a list of the better of the lower cost feeds. I guess feeding raw would be more affordable.
@@Solamia7 out of my budget too! we want to give our dogs the best we can but seriously everyone has a different opinion some say raw is best, others say kibble. Right now i am giving my husky puppy taste of the wild with vegetables and fruits
I bought a bag of wellness for my previous dog many years ago. Back when I still fed kibble. I never fed the same kibble two bags in a row. I tried to feed what I thought was good kibble. Within one week of starting that bag of wellness, her hair started falling out and she looked like crap. I could not believe it. I donated that bag and I bought a new brand and she instantly got better. So some dogs can't tolerate some foods.
I've been feeding my dog Fromm's large breed puppy chow since 12/5/23. She seems to be developing fine and the couple vets I've been to have said this is my best bet to keep her on into adulthood. Watched this video among sooo many others before getting my puppy. Guess I will find out in 8 years time, or somewhere along the way, but so far this seems like a decent choice at its price point. Also, I very much support buying from a smaller family owned brand.
I have a 2 month almost 3 month old mini dachshund and he eats framm and his poop and coat are great. Breeder has been giving it to her dogs and pups for years. My pup loves it.
My pup is EXTREMELY allergic to oatmeal so Taste of Wild Ancient Grains Lamb is one of the few that doesn't send us to the vet for allergy shots. His ears, skin and coat have cleared up. I do use apple, carrots and meat as training aids because oatmeal is often the second or third ingredient in most. Allergy testing was expensive but well worth it.
I can tell that you are doing so much for and taking great care of your pup! Just keep doing what your doing. Adding fresh fruits and veggies as training treats or toppers on their food is a great way to supplement kibble. If you need some more ideas on good toppers for kibble, here is a video I did on that. ruclips.net/video/36p-AORECOs/видео.html
I so appreciate all of your research and information about dog food. We are picking up our new puppy in 6 weeks and I was already worried about what to look for in order to feed my puppy in a healthy, nutrious way. This information is just what I needed. Thank you!!❤
Such great information! I work for Silver Lining Herbs and we have many customers asking for suggestions about better dog food options after experiencing health issues with their pups. We always look to clean up the diet first, so this will be a great resource for them! I'll be sharing your website and RUclips channels with our canine customers! Thank you!!!
We appreciate your advice on educating on healthier alternative dog food. The people on budgets What is a good alternative that we can afford better on budgets I think it's important that you start giving out that type of information. Thank you Not these overpriced dog foods that you are provoting❤❤❤❤
I've been feeding Carna4 Fish to my 3 dogs (Peanut (12-yr old toy poodle), Reign (7-yr old Shih-Tzu) & Miss Maggie (5-yr old Malshi alpha female) for over a year and was comparing to see if there was a better food, but obviously there isn't! 😉 Sooo glad I found your channel! Why do these people bash purina? They've been around for over 100 years. I stand by them. My dog eats purina dog cow and my cats eat cat chow they do great.
People are sheep, they'll just follow the name brand blindly. Even when shown the facts, they'll just ignore it and continue to take their poison. That goes for everything really. People are sheep.
@@Quadira6 Please provide source? As i can show you other food that killed animals too but it could be the owner fault. Also did you know in most american pet food there are harmful chemical not told to the customer? THis is very worrying and what are you to do? What food do you use?
Muffin was a mixed breed. And Muffin ate what I ate. I did not and do not eat junk or highly processed foods. Raw veggies & fruits, meats not fried, brown rice, oats. This is easy to do since you should be doing it for yourself. Muffin lived to the age of 17. Since Muffin, I have had large breed dogs. Some were poorly put together (boxer/Rott) or large unknown breeds... 12 to 13 for those guys. One thing I have learned is, dog breeds just aren't as sturdy as mutts used to be.... K.I.S.S. your dogs will be healthier!
Hello Rachel! Thank you very much for your helpful Videos! I am intensely preparing for my new puppy, who will come next week. She is almost 12 weeks old. She was not potty trained or crate trained. I would really much like to start practicing the tips you gave. I have so many concrete questions on some things, it would be sooo cool if you could take a bit of time and answer them. I would be soooo grateful!! Thank you again for your advice , you do an amazing job! 🤗🤗
Thanks to you, my dogs are mostly well trained, lol. They are all 3 on fresh foods along with goat milk, bone broths, and pro & pre biotics as toppers. They have all healthy treats with less than a handful of ingredients in each treat and are always being challenged with brain games. I never would have thought or known so much about any of this if it wasn't for finding one of your puppy videos when I was searching for tips on how to raise a puppy. You have changed the way I see the dog world! I wish I knew this when I had my cat who passed away from cancer in 2020. She was 18 yrs old and always on kibble. I wonder if she would have lasted longer if I gave her more healthier options 🥺. I'll never know but I won't make that same mistake with my 3 pups! Thanks to YOU 💕.
I was feeding my dog blue buffalo but he would not eat much of it even when mixed with wet food. I then switched to purina one as my dog sitter's dog ate purina one. He would eat her purina one like it was the best food he ever tasted and I did not even need to mix it. I understand its not the best food but I mix it with a good quality wet food. He's eating me out of house and home now. I just hate to keep switching to find what he likes as he can be picky. So hopefully it balances out.
My strategy when it comes to dry dog food is to always choose a different food. That is, if I took Hilles in chicken flavor, the next time I buy dry food it will be Hilles lamb. And after that Taste of the Wild Salomon, etc., etc. The market is flooded with a wide variety of options. Why always choose the same product?
I just got a new puppy and they were feeding her purina one. So, if you were me, would you continue feeding it while slowly transitioning to healthier brands, or would you skip the purina and go straight to new food?
From one of your previous videos, I thought you mentioned that Lentils and Peas are not good ingredients and they are pretty top of the ingredients list from Open Farm dog kibble. So are they good or bad?
I just adopted a beautiful boy mixed breed from shelter today! The girl told me to get taste of the wild, & boy was I glad I didn't go spend a ton of money on dog food. Eventually I would like to cook plain chicken, rice & veggies the healthy way of course for example. Why should our babies eat dry dog food for rest of their lives? No matter the price for the branding natural is always best.
Good to hear… I’ve fed mine fromm all his 5 yrs and good health. I use the grain free one and very occasionally give a bit of the one with grain as my vet advised
My Wolfhound was really picky and would not eat Taste of the Wild or any "Holistic" brand. We had to get creative and we also had to make some because her stomach was so sensitive.
I’m in Australia and I feed Ziwi Peak. It’s amazing! And I can understand every ingredient on the ingredient list. Why would a company need to add salt to a dog food?
As for taste of the wild, can the higher protein count lead to weight gain? Recently switched one of my dogs to taste of the wild and he gained almost 15 lbs :(
good point on the coloring! I recently looked at dog treats for the "grand-puppies" , at the end of the semi decent ingredient list was smoked flavor. I put it back - no dog needs artificial smoke flavor in my head anyway :)
Please do foods you would feed or like that are available in Australia, or if you are against that and only do US companies, can you do ones that ship internationally, pretty please Rachel? First time dog owner here and want to create a wonderful life for my new bestie🙏
Milk thistle helps liver break down toxins, etc. but it won’t cure liver cancer. It helps support the liver. I use it on my seniors. Just for liver support.
Thank you so much for video! It helps a lot. I have checked your list of kibble recommendations and found that you recommend Framina with free grains lines only, may I ask what do you think about ancestors grain line for puppy? I am choosing grain/grain free by Framina for puppy or the taste of the wild that offer grain free options only on the market where I currently live. Thank you in advance!
I live in Australia and our pet food standards are quite strict . I appreciate all the nutritionists that have all of a sudden jumped on RUclips this scares the BS out of people and especially now with all that’s going on in the world people can barely afford to feed themselves let alone start cooking gourmet gods to their dogs. Growing up we fed dogs everything and they lived a long life. All of these different companies is all a money spinner.
Those of us who are on a limited income, we seek into good and nutritional dry dog and cat food. Plus canned food which is VERY expensive to purchase. I am looking to make canned food for both cat and dog. Any ingredients, could you share? I do have a turkey i want to cook to use. Thanks
My dog loves Carna4, Raised Right and Sunday's. I use ZiwiPeak for high value treats. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Any one of ur listed dog foods can be used along side to off-set more affordable dog food brands and let's not forget, the higher value the product, the smaller the serving size typically. I maintained my purebred 90lb English Lab's weight on 1/4-1/2 cup of Ziwi Peak 2x day...vs the 3 or more cups I was feeding him on Taste of the Wild. A 5lb bag, last 1 mo at $100 a bag, which I think is a reasonable budget to aim for as a responsible pet owner.
How does 5lbs last u a whole month at 1/2 cup twice a day.. I am deff 8interested .. I raise and train protection dogs German Shepard's and so I protein with the fat and fiber content eq out in right portions.. I feed royal Cain for GS .. BUT I'm interested in what u got going on so please explain more ..thank u in advance
@Kelly Cooksey English The serving size i used was the equivalent of 1 scoop, provided with each bag of Ziwi Peak...it appeared to slightly more than 1/4 cup but less than a 1/2 cup. My lab was over 4yrs old at the time and roughly 90lbs when i started feeding ZiwiPeak. It maintained his weight and he lived to see 13yrs. Lived a long, healthy & energetic life for a purebred English Lab. I rescued him when he was 3yrs old from a breeder when he did not pass hip inspection with superior. Best $100 I ever spent. He was one of the greatest dogs I ever knew.
This is a fantastic video, but one thing I'd question and point out is that "sweet and regular potatoes" must surely be split due to how different they are. My understanding is that regular potatoes are from the nightshade family while sweet potatoes are not. The two ARE related - both tuberous root vegetable families originating in the Americas - but only distantly. I should add that I’m genuinely interested in pet nutrition - having 3 cats and a dog - not wishing to spark a disagreement. I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on this, as I've been avoiding "potato" in my pets' now mainly wet food (am weaning them off kibble!) so as to veer away from carbs, but had assumed "sweet potato" to be a healthier and more acceptable ingredient. There's a school of thought that it's useful in providing a bit of fibre ... something I'd heard can help cats susceptible to hairballs (i.e. in helping to shepherd the loose hairs smoothly through the digestive tract as opposed to forming a 'hair sausage' that is yicked up from time to time). My interest in pet nutrition stems from my first dog, who I got as a pup back in 2002, developing allergies well before the age of 2 (red, itchy paws, recurrent ear infections and “hotspots”). I didn’t know ANYTHING about pet nutrition back then, and from Day One as a puppy-parent had trusted that the most expensive food on my vet’s waiting room shelves would be the best for my much-adored girl: Iams!!! Arggghhh! When her allergy issues arose, the vet practice - after first charging me for a whole battery of expensive tests, including a skin biopsy on one of her paws - suggested an exclusion diet as a last (should have been first, IMO!) resort. Bea did a ton better after excluding meat, wheat, soya and maize from her diet … with her main protein going forward being fish. I also stopped vaccinations when she was around 6 years old … but that’s a different story. The positive, though, is that - even as a large Lab mix of 33kg / 73 pounds - she got to a grand age of 15 ¼ and I’m certain she’d have lived even longer had she not developed GOLPP toward the end of her life; a larynx operation aged nearly 13 gave her 2 ½ extra years. Anyway, I got even more interested in nutrition on discovering that my first dog’s later well-liked food change to Burns Fish and Brown Rice kibble (again, “trusted” - being touted as being developed by a vet) had changed the rice content by increasing it to a whopping 61% and also reducing the fish to only 20% (with no decrease in price, naturally!). I’d just by chance read about this on a discussion page in a dog magazine … otherwise I’d have continued to be clueless. At this point Bea was on about 30% wet food … but only as a ‘carrier’ for her Plaque-Off powder supplement, to have something to be mixed with. My second dog is benefitting from my additional knowledge, gleaned from places such as your channel. I am in the UK, so sadly the majority of your recommendations are not available over here, but I’ve found that checking food nutrition scores on the All About Dog Food website (basically a huge, filterable, database of thousands of dog foods) has been immensely useful. While I can’t embrace raw-feeding, Jamie-girl has always been on a high-quality grain-free mostly wetfood diet and I’ve continued with fish as the main protein. As I said, I’m phasing out the kibble and won’t be buying any more after the current respective bags for her and the cats are used up. One of my cats, aged 4, recently had to have a bladder stone removal … so I found to my cost that even a half high quality kibble / half wet food cat feeding regime can cause problems (he is wet food only now and as an unexpected bonus his coat is amazing!). My dog also gets a great mix of fresh veggies and fruit added to her diet. She’s 5 now, and has NO allergies - yay! - and the only medical issue she’s ever had since I adopted her aged 5.5 months was a recent swollen and irritated right ear canal after ear-plucking at the groomer’s (i.e. unlikely to be food-related). Of course, anyone who becomes more aware of pet nutrition would have regrets about past mistakes - I do … especially the Iams! - but the pet food business is all about keeping those mistakes secret - and I LOVE how you are helping to bring the murky secrets to the light. More power to you!
I love your videos. Could you do a video on foods that you can purchase at pet stores like PetSmart, Petco, chewy that would be acceptable to feed? Personally I'd like to know your thoughts about Acana and Evangers. Both the wet and dry foods. I recently adopted a Corgi Chihuahua mix that was part of a humane case. She was severely under weight, full of parasites, hardly any fur. I'm slowly getting weight on her. She was just used for breeding also and had little human contact, so I'm working with her taking it slow. I've tried a few foods to see what she will eat. Right now she does like the Acana small breed with the wet for a topper or I put bone broth on her food. She loves apples also. I also make her homemade freeze dried liver treats. We use those for training.
Since not all of us can afford expensive brands. I wish also she could let us know the top 3 best dog foods that are at a lower price bracket. Of course, I want to add to it all the healthy toppers. Thank you for this question.
@rachelfusaro if you had to choose the lesser of the evils can you do a ranking of a list of these please bc you always only do the unreasonable products like if we all run a youtube channel
@@ceceflores5418 I've personally done a lot of research on my own in dog foods. Acana wholesome grains dry food, and evangers dry and wet dog foods are the best and most affordable I've found. I'm only on disability for my income so I'm on a tight budget. Evangers dry dog food on chewy is around $10 for a 4lb bag. Acana is a little bit more. Evangers wet dog food like lamb and rice, and beef and bacon has no fillers. It's around $26 a 12 pack. Pet supplies plus does sell single cans if you wanna try it. It's a pretty thick pate. They actually cook the food in the cans. I usually scoop a few spoonfuls out and add a little water and mix with dry dog food. I feed that to my corgi mix, and pit mix. Evangers also has a wet food that's for cats and dogs. My dogs and cats absolutely love it. It's a little bit more a can, but saves money getting one type of food all the furkids can have. It's all meat. No junk in it.
@@jeannettebarnes2193 Acana has changed a bit, there is quite a bit of loose material in the bag that my dog won't eat now and not sure if it's related but he is scratching his ears lately.
Thanks for the great information. We just got back from our first vet visit - adopted Willow a week ago. I was shocked when the vet advised not to feed 'grain free' food, but Purina was just great. Not my first dog. 20 years ago, on the advice of a friend who bred Goldens, I switched from Purina Pro to Wellness, and health improved dramatically. I switched the cat's food to Wellness from Purina, and she stopped throwing up for the first time ever. I see your point about Wellness, tho. I had been feeding my last dog the Wellness Raw Rev, which was freeze dried, and I thought it was all meat. I see now it's not and has various legumes. Will take your advice and switch to one of your recommendations.
What couple brands of dog food would you recommend? They are completely chicken free. Because my dog has really bad allergies to it. And itches like crazy from it. Any recommendations?
open farm has some option that arent chicken check the ingredints just in case though i reccomend the lamb or salmon or beef or vison that one is a little over priced but.
Love your content! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and information. Question, I was a bit confused on where exactly you stand on Taste of the Wild. It didn't seem to be included in the 4 that you would not recommend, but it also didn't seem to be included in the 3 that you love. Is it one that you would recommend, or not? Thanks!
I got banned on Reddit r/dogs when I was speaking facts on the garbage ingredients purina pro/ hill science contains. The mods there seem to push those brands.
Rachael, can you please review Bixbi Liberty kibble and canned food for both cats and dogs? That's what I switched to a month ago, and so far my fur-babies are doing very well. But we are still trying to transition to more fresh food
Thank you SO much for sharing this valuable information. I've just started feeding my 17 week old puppy Nom Nom fresh. Do you have any information about it? I can cancel after this month, if you have a better option to recommend. Does anyone else have any idea? I want to start him out on the healthiest life possible.
Annette, our smooth toy fox terrier has had one surgery for a luxating patella. I try to find the cleanest, best supplement for joint health for our sweet Jinx, but I’m not sure what I’m getting is best for him. What would you recommend?
i feed both my dogs Open Farm Salmon w/ Ancient Grains formula, only issue i have with this dog food is both dogs seem to scratch and lick their paws a lot..also both have constant soft, mushy poops..for a while i had them on Hills and their poops were always formed and solid..might switch again, not sure?
My understanding is that when a brand lists for example 'chicken meal' it's got lips & junk unfit for humans in it. So when I google 'meal free dry dog food' I get results about grain free. I'm so confused.
My opinion is that purina isn’t necessarily a bad as a brand that some will say and they have several different options from purina one to purina pro plan
Purina was all my in law was feeding her pitbull/lab mix and she died unfortunately too soon and thats all she would eat… i tried purina pro plan with my current dog and it did not sit right with her. Ingredients are very questionable
Can I ask about nutritional macros? Several years ago I started eating clean and low carb, and then four years ago went clean keto. It was life changing in terms of inflammation, vitals, everything! I've struggled trying to make home made food for my dogs and can't find nutritional macros on manufactured dog foods. Are nutritional macros anywhere to be found for dog foods?
Rachel please could you recommend an affordable kibble that is somewhat healthy and affordable? I have rescued two dogs and I have an old dog. So I have three dogs from 55-70 lbs! As you can imagine I go through a ton fast! I also cook food to add on top so I would like to do half and half. If I could just do cooked I would but in this economy it’s hard. What other human food do you recommend too? I also use a digestive enzyme and probiotic daily. Thank you! Oh an any affordable healthy chews!
I thought Orijen was expensive but Carna4 is on a completely different level. My two 75lbs dogs would bankrupt me if I bought that food. Gonna check out Open Farm but so far, Orijen has done right by my fluffy children. Vet thought my mix breed Collie was 7 not 10 at her last checkup.
Good info. I'm not a food or brand loyalist but you painted the brands with a very broad brush. The brands make so many types of foods and the ingredients differ. Also, the three brands that were recommended are cost prohibitive...Front of the Pack 50.99 for 2.5 lbs of food - Really? Open farm is also expensive their ingredients for the turkey food that was presented by the video says "Humanely Raised Turkey, Humanely Raised Chicken, Ocean Whitefish Meal, Russet Potatoes, Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas), Green Lentils, Field Peas, Coconut Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Ocean Menhaden Fish Meal, Tomato, Apples, Pumpkin, Natural Flavour..." Are the chickpeas, lentils, and field peas considered ingredient splitting. The "meals" that were mentioned in the video also occur in this food Whitefish meal...menhadedn fish meal. Then the food also has natural flavour? The video contradicts what's in this food. I wanted to like to this video.
I've never read a book so fast! ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through.
Purina is absolute dreck.
Exactly, not everyone can afford or have access to the all natural healthier food that is only available in Canada.
My vet recommended Purina One for my dog 🐕
I’d love to try them and I adore my dogs, but a $900 per dog monthly food budget is absurd!
Make fresh.
Just give them real meat and buy it in bulk
GO FOR BONELESS LAMB MEAT OR SALMON FREEZE IT DO SAME WITH OTHER INGREDIENTS
I tried Orijen, Farmina N&D, and Acana… my dog had soft stools with all of them. I went back to Taste of the Wild every time and her stools are solid. She’s a happy healthy 3 years old German shepherd.
With better natural foods like raw diets also, soft stools are common for some time until their stomachs digest it better as it’s first time they eat something .. healthy ! My guess is money for you, or should have simply researched basic dog care to know about soft stools with new foods… you are an abuser if you can’t afford the best smh ! I appreciate the informative nature of this video, but it would also help if you mentioned alternative brands that were more budget friendly to pet parents that are financially challenged. A lot of these brands are ultra expensive.
yea no... she only preach for people who has money, dont need to talk to poor people
Have you ever considered the idea that owning a dog is expensive?

Still a low and cheap form of protein at the end of the day.
My issues are they don't use NON GMO grains and they need to knock the CARBS DOWN!! Come on Purina Seriously by now you can step it up and STOP PUTTING CRAP INTO THE PET FOODS!!!!
Proteins should come mainly from animal sources not corn
@@TiffanyT12 8
corn is NOT a "food" dogs should be eating.
Thank you

I appreciate that you have provided a food list that is also available in Canada. Thank you so much Rachel for everything that you do for dog owners and our companions.
I'm glad I feed my dog raw. No BS and she's so much healthier!
Your pups thank you!❤
Why do dogs need goats milk ?...I thought milk period wasn't good for them ........and any suggestions on what to give ..... when a dog gets a little indigestion.....?
We are on The Honest Kitchen all so and doing well. two chi's and one corgi. If I add anything on top I do it with veggies and cooked meats.
Two of my six dogs had terrible reactions to HK... chicken and flaxseed were the two biggest culprits.
$48 for two and a half pounds of dog food are you kidding me
Means it’s good food!
I pay $31 a lb. for essentially high nutrition dog foods. Human grade food. Raw freeze dried maintaning nutrients, not over processed. My dogs are healthy with long life span.
Non gmo, non synthetics

Fromm is just fine.
My vet has had my 2 Labradoodles on Fromm since day 1. NO issues or problems with their food at all. Dogs eat it and digestion has been great.
I have a 2 month almost 3 month old mini dachshund and he eats framm and his poop and coat are great. Breeder has been giving it to her dogs and pups for years. My pup loves it.
I also use Fromm the grain free foods my pups 5 yrs and doing great. The one she showed were diff formula so hopefully the formula I use is better
You know what that’s actually a pretty smart idea, gives your dog a wider variety of food to eat that way, I’m gonna try that 😄
I just got a new puppy and they were feeding her purina one. So, if you were me, would you continue feeding it while slowly transitioning to healthier brands, or would you skip the purina and go straight to new food?

Great information....I just got a chinese crested hairless with some skin issues. Is there a food that you would recommend for this?
Are you feeding chicken based?
I just adopted a beautiful boy mixed breed from shelter today! The girl told me to get taste of the wild, & boy was I glad I didn't go spend a ton of money on dog food. Eventually I would like to cook plain chicken, rice & veggies the healthy way of course for example. Why should our babies eat dry dog food for rest of their lives? No matter the price for the branding natural is always best.

I’m in Australia and I feed Ziwi Peak. It’s amazing! And I can understand every ingredient on the ingredient list.
Why would a company need to add salt to a dog food?
Carna4 is an above average food, however it is heavily plant based ingrediants chicken, chicken liver, eggs then 6 plant seeds 2 starchs
As for taste of the wild, can the higher protein count lead to weight gain? Recently switched one of my dogs to taste of the wild and he gained almost 15 lbs :(
Look at the recommended amount to feed, comparing the labels of the old and new food. You may be feeding too much.
good point on the coloring! I recently looked at dog treats for the "grand-puppies" , at the end of the semi decent ingredient list was smoked flavor. I put it back - no dog needs artificial smoke flavor in my head anyway :)
What is your opinion on zesty? For helping stomach issues in a dog?
Please do foods you would feed or like that are available in Australia, or if you are against that and only do US companies, can you do ones that ship internationally, pretty please Rachel? First time dog owner here and want to create a wonderful life for my new bestie🙏
Can u please help suggest a good supplement for dogs with liver cancer?
All of these different companies is all a money spinner.
thank you🐶
I APPRECIATE YOU LOVE!
What about this brand?
Whole Earth Farms?
Those of us who are on a limited income, we seek into good and nutritional dry dog and cat food. Plus canned food which is VERY expensive to purchase.
I am looking to make canned food for both cat and dog. Any ingredients, could you share? I do have a turkey i want to cook to use. Thanks
Love your videos! What camera did you use to film this video? Thanks!
@@lindateeter272 completely agree. I wanna feed my furkids great, but I've got a tight budget also.
Find a holistic veterinarian now if you can. The standard push the standard mantra just like doctors poo poo the holistic world.
A friend told me I have to be careful with chicken because it can cause pancreatitis. What are your thoughts?
Thank you…just tossed a new bag of FROMM treats . I’ll read ingredients next time before I buy
What? Why?
Love your content! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and information. Question, I was a bit confused on where exactly you stand on Taste of the Wild. It didn't seem to be included in the 4 that you would not recommend, but it also didn't seem to be included in the 3 that you love. Is it one that you would recommend, or not?
Thanks!
Ivory coat has got positive feedbacks from pet parents, can try that!!
Great content! What do you think of Farmina N&D?
Whats the best dog food you can purchase from pets mart
Thank you!
I got banned on Reddit r/dogs when I was speaking facts on the garbage ingredients purina pro/ hill science contains. The mods there seem to push those brands.
As do vets. Smh
I feed grain free Fromm is that ok? The one you showed wasn’t the grain free.
Wellness is actually a really good quality dog food. It has the least amount of fillers. Anything after salt is a filler.
Hi do you recommend merrick?
Which food from open farm do you recommend for puppy??
Very interesting 🤔
Thank you !!
I feed my chow chow wellness. 😮
What food would you recommend for a chow chow with possible grain allergies?
I am constantly getting adds for the Farmers Dog dog food. Do you have an opinion on this brand?
Which food for puppies?
Open farm has natural flavor in the ingredients list :/ have they explained why?
What do you think about Essence?
i feed both my dogs Open Farm Salmon w/ Ancient Grains formula, only issue i have with this dog food is
both dogs seem to scratch and lick their paws a lot..also both have constant soft, mushy poops..for a while
i had them on Hills and their poops were always formed and solid..might switch again, not sure?
Thank you for the great information!
My understanding is that when a brand lists for example 'chicken meal' it's got lips & junk unfit for humans in it. So when I google 'meal free dry dog food' I get results about grain free. I'm so confused.
Carna4 is a very good brand of dog food. However, might not be suitable for all dogs since their kibbles are very hard and often found in dog’s stool.
Thank you for all you do Rachel. I am going to show this to my mom she feeds our dogs Purina dog food and I am trying to convince her to feed raw
YOU are why i do what i do!
Please don’t. Raw food can only brings more bacteria into your dog’s stomach. Please listen to your vets.
Fromm is probably one of the best options if you're using kibble - lol!
Do you know anything about a dogs diet?
Thanks so much actually my puppy will be eating adult food soon you make it easy to pick the right one!
My puppy is already on fresh. Crucial stage to eat the best
I feed my dogs taste of the wild with mct oil and hemp seed oil in the morning and a raw frozen chicken leg quarter with bone in the evening
