  • Waylon Jennings performs a little bit of, "Living Legends (a dying breed)"
From Waylon Jennings’ appearance on “Late Nite with David Letterman,” Dec 1, 1983.
Waylon: "This is a song about Nashville, to see if them hillbillies have any sense of humor about themselves!"
    "Living Legends (a dying breed)"
Well here’s the latest news from Nashville
Some of it a little bit rough
Like Charlie Daniels’ new day job
    He’s on TV selling snuff
George Jones quit drinkin’ and the CMA
Made him #1 on their TV show
Funny thing is, he always was
But they only discovered him ‘bout a year ago
Living legends are a dying breed
There ain’t too many of ‘em left
Tell you the truth I ain’t been
    Feeling real hot lately myself
Well, old Willie’s out in California
    I ain’t sure he’s coming back
Him and Kris are out in Hollyweird
And they’re tryin’ to figure out how to act
Me and ol’ Johnny Cash wrote a movie
Gon’ put all the rest of ‘em to shame
    Gon’ be starring Dolly Parton
We call it the “Hunch Front of Notre Dame”
Living lovers are a dying breed
You gotta love the ones you got left
Especially me ‘cause I ain’t been
Making out in a whole lot lately myself
I’m a iving legend in my own spare time
    I wrote this song myself
If I’d a known it was gonna turn out this bad
I might a got myself a little bit of help
Du du du du That’s all Folks!
    Written by Waylon Jennings
From the Album, "It's Only Rock & Roll" (1983 RCA Records)
Thanks to @CNKguitar and @Zac Hill for setting me straight on this one! I had it mixed up with
the song, "Living Legend", from the "Highwayman 2" album. Whooops!

It's actually on the 1983 album "It's Only Rock & Roll." The song is called "Living Legends (A Dyin' Breed)."

Waylon did record the song, "Living Legends (A Dyin' Breed)" in 1983. However, that is a completely different song! Totally different lyrics. Pretty serious song topic, too. He did release a humorous song called "Living Legends, Pt. 2" on his 1996 album, "Right for the Time." That song is definitely "related" to the song in the video. You can read the lyrics to that song here: genius.com/Waylon-jennings-living-legends-pt-ii-lyrics The song in the video was probably like a rough draft of the finished song on his "Right for the Time" album. The whole song is basically a big ol' middle finger to Nashville and all their bs. Pure Outlaw.

DAMN! No one could say it like quite like Waylon could!
Thanks for the comment! You made me do my research!

@@zachill Damn, I was totally wrong! You and @CNKguitar are correct about this song! The damn Google gave me the lyrics for the song, "Living Legends," which is a Kristofferson song on the "Highwayman 2" album! I'm blaming Google on this one!! Thanks for setting me straight. I appreciate it. Now I gotta go change the thumbnail for the video!
