Gen 3 Range Rover - Real Off Road Test

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Something a little different as we take this MK III Range Rover L322 for an off road test at Lithgow. Through the Wombat Holes at the Powerlines and then down Nine Mile Steps to Ali Babas Cave and back up.
It's interesting to see a standard modern 4wd Land Rover Range Rover attempt this sort of terrain. We have seen many 4x4's both standard and modified struggle on these tracks. Our main worry was clearance and we took care not to damage the front or rear bars and smash in the sills as it climbed and dropped off the rock steps.

That's what do many fail to appreciate when comparing the range rover to other vehicles, it'll go anywhere off-road, cruise in perfect comfort, give gtis a run for their money and doesn't look out of place in any social setting.
Really is a unicorn vehicle
Fellow L322 driver here, great to see you really using it!
I'm amazed at just how capable these cars are, considering they're also draped in leather and can smash up a motorway and licence-losing speeds in extreme comfort! :)
Thing can hit 120 easily not saying I did this personally.
@@user-rl6px5ob3d I agree ;)
The 322 doing what it does best - and naked too! Just shows that you don't need to deck a car out like a Camel Trophy. _No_ oversized tyres, _no_ oil rig bumper with obligatory winch, _no_ chunky tyres, _no_ massive spotlights, _no_ stickers or decals plastered everywhere, and a guy in the driving seat who knows what he's doing with heaps of mechanical sympathy. No revving the nuts off the car and ''going for it'' like so many other 4x4 people we see on RUclips. Nicely done!
People seriously underestimated the L322. I ran Goodyear Duratracs on mine and they were the bomb diggity.
Thanks for recording your trip.
Well you dont often see them out so its understandable that they are underestimated. Better tyres would go a long way.
@@lror yes those big old brakes made it difficult to get a rim that would take a decent sized sidewall
J Denmark big rims and big brakes are ok for street use bit not off road. It looks liks this vehicle sustained some damage doing this too.
Taking any vehicle like this off the tarmac is just asking for body and rim damage.
@@jessewoody5772 more to the point of taking any stock vehicle that damage can happen.
Off-road mods are jacked up and bigger diameter tires. Do that to this range and it would be that much better.
Underbody on these is built with it in mind as well.
@@jessewoody5772 and to clarify the guy responding wasn’t wanting big rims, I’m thinking he meant the big brakes meant you couldn’t go for too small a rim, to then have a big rubber on there to be heat stock diameter without doing a lift.
Best looking SUV and really capable too. This generation looks really good.
The owner has balls to throw his Landy into this kind of landscape. Respect! And a perfect example of team work on wild tracks! Well done.
The very best off road drive of a Range Rover HSC i ever seen., now i know this Range Rover HSC is a capable off roader and i love it.
Best off-roader on earth 🌍 I want it. Greetings from France 🇫🇷
my td6 can take me anywhere, watching this encourages me to go further, what a 4x4.
I knew that Range Rovers are capable but that was better than I expected! 👍
Awesome , just for being all stock , im still impressed by the street tyres on how well handle the terrain and yes the driver and company did an awesome job .
that is crazy for a stock vehicle that the queen would drive and still goes very well off-road especially for being completely stock!
Yeah she did well. That's a cool way of putting it 👍
How is the old series holding up mate?
@@lror the series is going great mate still exploring heaps of tracks in her!
@@sebastiantaylor9188 we got to go out soon mate.
@@lror definitely mate, I’ll have to show you some of the tracks I’ve found
The Queen also drives a Defender 110 SW. And she used to repair military trucks during WWII.
I Love it. It show the capabilities of a full size SUV in stock form. Very impressive.
Best L322 off-road vid i have come accross on RUclips. Excellent. Do you recall what Terrain Response program you used?
Thank you. It was in rock crawl mode, and hdc was on but the speed was increased before it kicks in.
Excellent! Low range, some ground clearance and a locking rear diff is all one needs. As long as it's dry and you're not in a hurry, street tires will get you there.
I'm looking at buying a range rover for daily driving and trails at the weekend, good to see one being used for what it was designed for. Impressive how well it did on road tyres
Thanks for this, I have a 2006 L322 with Bridgestone Blizzack tires, they would have better traction than you had but my main concern is the strength of the sidewalls as they damage easily. This video certainly encourages me to give it a try once I get better tires, I do miss my Classic Rangerover which was awesome offroad and my P38 was no slouch either.
Not bad on low profile road tyres
Yeah, a bit more sidewall would have been better. The rims came close and touched a couple of times.
Indeed.
@@lror yep 3:52
LOVE the L322!
Thanks for putting this vid up.
It’s great to see a variety of different off readers going through their paces.
It’d be good to see a some footage of the w163 ML class Mercs. They are a surprisingly tough and capable vehicle.
Yeah it's great seeing how each car reacts.
Mercedes if you're reading this we will be happy to test your vehicles 😎
One of the best range rover off-road videos I have ever seen! I would like to take my rr sport to do off-roading
Thank you. Go and enjoy, the sports are awesome rigs.
amazing off road driving skills! Respect from Canada... owned a RRS for 14 years now, has never let me down the Jaguar V8 still roars! :)
263k on my brothers 06 Range Rover Westminster! Still going strong.💪
👍👍👍 The truth is out.
@@subarubuildz1738 👍👍👍👍
The big L322 showing how it’s done! Can both have a comfortable ride and a great off-road experience. My old man wants a L322 with a TDV8 over his current Td5 D2 daily!
Another kick-a$$ video. Like seeing all kinds of 4x4s on the trail, and don’t get to see much of Range Rovers. I’d be mighty interested in seeing someone bash an older Cayenne (with a transfer case) or a Touareg, just for the hell of it. This guy in Italy has good videos running a Fiat Campagnola (!). Actually a really good off roader.
Thanks a lot, it's always interesting seeing something different doing this sort of terrain. Would be good to get one of those rigs out with us.
Very impressive. Especially without off road tires
Awesome machine. Can do all the gnarley stuff like all the modded hick Cruisers in the afternoon but in the evening take the missus out for dinner at the Ritz. Bear Grylls on wheels
Astounding vehicle! I was the first commercial 4WD tour operator in Australia to run one of these L322's back 2002 with the TD6 diesel engine. 100% international visitors to Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Hill End and Barrington Tops. Reliability? Never an issue when properly maintained and I earned A$1200/couple per day. That level of service was simply not possible with any Japanese 4WD. I recently sold my 05 4.4 litre L322, sight unseen for double market value so there is still market for this much under-rated 4WD if well maintained and I miss it already...
Який мотор ?
4.4 BMW?
That Range Rover is amazing all this on standard road tyres
Hey. I also have series L322 with AT tires. I'm just starter my friendship with offroad. I can't imagine another car for me. You's film is awsome. I looking forward to see another one.
Man that exhaust-sound is just SWEET! The tires is a total disgrace though, and failing a great vehicle immencely. A good set of rubber and, viola...success! Thanks again for a very enjoyable video!
Yes tyres would be a big improvement 😊👍
this is what the new defender is based on
All that tech is upgraded in the new defender. But it was clear from this generation that it already works like a charm. Any damage to those sensors though, and it's game over.
It shares the same body frame from discovery
Same DNA inside and same terrific terrain
👍 response
Nope, RR Sport shares the frame with Disco. This RR is a unibody vehicle
As @@romantkachuk168 mentioned you are thinking of the Range Rover Sport L320 which shares the frame with the Disco 4, the full size Range Rover L322 in the video is vastly different.
Yes of course. You are right 🤫
This is amazing,to do this with low profile road tyres is just ...wow... I can only imagine what it can do with proper off road tyres
Not too shabby!!!
And with street tires.
I would love to see with some 33" KM2'S.
The Range Rover Vogue is a luxury SUV, imagine the 4x4 version. And that car is about 12 years old.
Not bad for truck with bicycle tires , the diesel motor grunt helps too
For a stock rr its excellent on those tyres. But when you compare it to a defender with arb diff lockers, those sections would of been so easy . But you cannot knock it for a standard road vehicle.
Been thinking on getting one of these to accompany my D2 and this has really convinced me. Thanks!
All.this on road tyres… I have 2 L322’s … love the footage
Great video and the RR went very very well all things considered. Tyre pressures looked maybe a bit hard, but guess lowering a bit might have been risky for rim and sidewall damage etc. Traction control looks to work very well though
Tyre pressures were let down but being 20 inch rim with low profiles it was risky. There were times the rims got close at these pressures. Maybe a tyre upgrade in the future 😊👍
This year I want to see him off-road again! )
Definitely ☺
From 7:00 very impressive
Brain and machine at work
Excellent driving mate for what looks like standard road tires
Yes everything is standard including hwy terrains.
Some 32" all terains and a steady foot would really show how capable these are. Driving with traction control takes a lil bit of learning, but oNce you learn how the system operates, it's awesome. You cant let up off the gas completely. Once you do, the system will unlock the slipping wheels and will have to sort things out all over again. Brake with your left foot, keeping your right slightly in the throttle. Later in the vid he began to learn to stay in the throttle and let the system sort it out.
Best off-roader on earth 🌍 range Rover 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😎😎😎😎😎✌️✌️✌️✌️my dream to buy it.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Amazing offroad skills man
Impressive for stock and luxuary car!!!
Stock lift?
Kinda making me want to buy the disco 2 I saw for sale yesterday
D2 💪
You won’t go far wrong lad
Seriously impressive! Equal share of driver talent and vehicle capability. How did the brakes hold up, did they get hot due to the ABS workout?
Thanks man 🍻
No problems other than noise now and then. I did set the hdc a little faster so it wouldnt cut in as often so that might of helped keep temps down.
Great video, watching your video has made me want to buy a mark 3, I always wanted the TDV8 but I was impressed by your V8 petrol
Very nice cars both on and off road. This one is a TDV8, good strong motor. Good luck in your hunt 👍
@@lror That was a TDV8? wow it was so quiet. Has your TDV8 been reliable for you? Where abouts do you live? I live in the north east of England.
@@amateurtorque6709 so far so good 🤞we are in Sydney Australia 👍
@@lror Nice one. My cousin lived there for a year. I'm putting together a video dedicated to Mk 3 Rangerovers offroad, would you mind if I used some of your footage? obviously I will highlight LROR as the source.

Been waiting for this, but my $$$ are on the green tractor.....
But I have a D2 that is constantly amazing in what it can do.
I have a D2 as well. Its the best of both worlds between a defender and range rover = a little luxury & ruggedness.
@@markformanek3689 And you don't pay a massive insurance like for a range which is consider by companies as very luxurious so much more expensive.
@@berjerk3425 stating the obvious.
Respect to you sir, you certainly know how 4 wheel driving is done!
Just one more question do you have to take a break going downhill to let the brakes cool off as they are under a lot of duress going downhill
It didn't have that issue but i set the hdc speed up a little so it wasn't overworked.
Hi is the range rover completely original? Or is a strong difflock and non-breaking axle installed afterwards
Completely stock standard with no rear diff lock. Just traction control and standard axles.
That’s 90 % driver skill and 2 % articulation and 8% traction control 🙌🏼
I’ve owned my 2004 L322 since 2007 and it kicks a§§ off road on stock Nintendo with Cooper Zenon Mud Terrains
Sweet as man!! Welcome to my world! I find in the Grand Vitara that I need to be fairly fluid with it - maintaining a bit of momentum to let the traction control be most effective (though it looks like the LR control is a bit more advanced than the ol Zook...). Gotta watch those sills though! So what's the plans? Going to go all Black Betty on it?
Black Betty has set the bar really high. Hopefully sliders and tyres then go from there. Yes i understand about traction control and the need for momentum and staying on the gas, but without lift, sliders etc on this terrain would most certainly end in damage. I tried using TC in a slower manner and it seemed to work. There is always room for improvement and with a bit more seat time i think i can get it to work even better in this same slow style.
@@lror Didn't it though?! I loved watching it go places and show how serious the RR could be! Yeah, totally understand being gentle with it. I tore off a sill cover and gave the transfer cross member gravel rash first time out in the GV. I was rather unimpressed with myself :( Even just a modest 40mm lift made such a huge difference! Will be great to watch the evolution.
@DAVID FORBES yeah they're a pretty decent car and surprisingly capable. Definitely go an auto cos it'll work better with the traction control, the driveability will be better (the gearing in the manual is a bit weird in mine) and you'll be able to run 245 75R16s with no probs. Lift and bash plates are essential. Not to spew too much unsolicited advice... 😁
This is good stuff, the Rover is genuinely good.Get the new defender on this track.
I bought a 2010 LR RR Supercharged for my wife and being wanting to off road it. 3 reasons why I haven't. 1. My wife will kill me if she finds out. LOL! 2. It's way too responsive with the throttle and I am afraid that I will send it out the hole too fast into a tree or rock. 3. The truck is in mint condition and low miles so I will not forgive myself if I reck it. No matter what this SUV looks great in the city and offroad. In my opinion it is the best-looking SUV for any occasion. This thing can literally do everything and look great doing it. You can literally go off-roading in total comfort.
Great video and thanks for sharing!
Impressive, i'd still go for a good old defender though, had a good week of wheeling myself
That's great to hear man. It's always fun getting out. The old defenders are a lot easier to please and simple to deal with 😊👍
I have a 2008 rrv v8 great look, ride well till they break down! The diodes in alternator, egr motor, intercooler hoses, thermostat housing all issues and things I have changed myself. They are a labor of love ! Oh and the steering lock issues they have!
That honestly impressed me. I heard that bull bars and tow bars from the disco 3 fits that model Range Rover to?
Yes i heard the same with slight modifications.
I'm tyli I love your videos
Everyone one complaing about tyres. Maybe this thing spends some time actually on the road and doesn't want it to drive like shit. It's still very impressive with the tyres in this video
The 1% (of modern RRs that actually get used off road)
Try 33" off road tyres. will be impressive
Would be better 👍😊
why don't you just you do an expedition in Himachal mountain passes
Now that's a good idea 😬
Nice to see somebody taking a four-wheel-drive where it should go
As the owner of a RR Classic with ARB diffs, this is painful to watch. It reminds me of why I sold my LR3 (Disco 3 elsewhere).
Yeah traction control is certainly different to lockers.
Is it a TDV8 or a facelifted TD6?, the TDV8 actually does come with fully locking centre diff and an optional locking rear diff too, you’ll see the padlock symbols come on the 4x4 info screen but only in rock crawl mode and in low range, they padlock is open and display green when they’re open and they change to red with a locked padlock when the diffs are locked.
Unfortunately the car decides when it wants to lock them though not the driver.
TD6 doesn’t have fully locking diffs though.
Also love that 80 series Landcruiser out front-what a beast, I’d love one but they’re very rare and expensive in the U.K. now.
For a nearly 3ton vehicle is doing very well.
Nice way to go Rover. Btw the Toyota has Maxxis Trepador which is a competition off road mud tire...rover has street tires. Rover could have done better in sections it was slightly slipping with an AT tire or mud tire. Tires do make a difference. Great video
Agreed, tyres make a huge difference on this sort of terrain. Overall she did well though 😊👍
is this the 3.6 TDV8?
It sure is 👍
For those who might know, is one considered better than another? Landrover traction control system or A-trac from Toyota?
On road tires… really!!! What a machine

@@danielcoop4637 2008 and no locking diff

No, no faults or lights on afterwards.
Вот это блокировка действительно работает👍👏
What tires?
👍from Russia.
Not bad on crappy road tyres
I have an LR3 with Cooper STT pro tires. It is amazing off-road!
Oh yeah those tyre are grippy.
The driver kept on backing off just when traction aids started to kick in - in these vehicles do not back off nor gun them - keep steady constant power on and let the TC do its work. Where the driver did this the RR just walked it up - where the driver cut power it failed to proceed.
Why would you leave the tow bar (plough) in when doing this type of work - as happened the car got hung up on it and there is a chance of damaging it - it just unclips from the rear X member.
The vid does show how capable these are straight off the show room floor with road tyres. Some decent offroad tyres, and LLAMs height controller to give more ground clearance over the rough spots and that vehicle would be a great vehicle in that country - off course some ARB airlockers (yes they can fit) front and rear would help even more.
He's just learning and i would say that was a fantastic effort for the first time taking this rig on this terrain. I'd also disagree with taking off the tow bar (recovery hitch installed not towing tongue) as id rather hit that than damage other stuff.
Thanks for the comment 👍😊
@@lror Great comments - yes I agree the guy and the vehicle did a great job. Understand about not wanting to damage the rear so leaving the tow bar in but it has been shown that they develop fatigue cracks when they have been hitting rocks so can fail when later towing that 3500kg caravan. For recovery I would use the rear recovery point rather than the tow bar for that same reason I mentioned about fatigue cracks.
A great vid
Which wheel and tire they are using?
20 inch wheels with hwy terrains
Super , 👍💯
Can you get smaller steel rim for the LR
It's a tdv8 model with the bigger brembos up front so in general no, 20 inch is what's needed to clear. However a couple of 18" wheels are available from Tuff Ant and Compotive that apparently clear the calipers.
Достойно проходит...
The forest used to be quite dense in the wombat holes... Are they busy building? Or is it due to the fires?
The fires wiped everything out and the mining has ramped up.

Prick. I'd have a breakdown if I was married to that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I drive a RR III L322 4.4V8 / ARDEN tuning....it's a nice car outside and very comfortable inside but at the same time it's the most problematic car I ever drove - precious scrap.
Not a month goes by in which nothing happens.... most problems - the electric and sensor....high distance control HDC .... complete gearbox general overhaul at 120000km and and and and.... very expensive with all the Problems.... 8:40 Why have a spotter if you aren't going to listen to him????
Ultimately the spotter's job is to spot the driver up the lines the driver wants.
Land Rovers and Range Rovers are awesome off-road vehicles! Their only drawback is the unreliable technology they host and their complicated repairs. I have a jeep xj and a range rover so I can confirm lol.
Geez. They go slow enough😣
Articulation? We don’t need no stinkin’ articulation!
