Standard Gen 3 Range Rover - Luxury Pushed To It's Limits Off Road

  • L322 Range Rover TDV8 at Zig Zag in Lithgow New South Wales Australia. It is in standard trim on Highway tyres with open diffs relying on the terrain response system to get through a very difficult trail.
    The Terrain Response was set in Rock Crawl mode and Offroad height for the suspension which rose into extended mode early on in the track. You can clearly see that a locker would have made the climb much easier as it could be used pro-actively prior to slippage, rather than a reactive system (Terrain Response) where you need to slip a tyre first before the system kicks in.
    The highway low profile tyres took a beating on this track and often lost air as the majority of the vehicle weight shifts to one corner. They also struggled to grab and find traction. By the end the tyres had cuts and bits of tread missing. Also lost air completely out of one tyre and had to send in the mighty Landcruiser to air up the flat tyre.
    We hope you guys enjoy this 4wd video and look forwarding to reading your comments.

    I'm a big LR fan, but wouldn't have believed in a million years that a stock RR with 20" and street tires would have been able to climb that. Moreover, videos never show the real steepness and difficulty of the track. Good job for the driver and the people who guided him. And the car, of course!.

    • @lror
      @lror  2 года назад +17

      You're spot on about videos flattening the terrain, but people who know can sort of tell how steep and big the ledges are.

      I had a bog standard discovery2 td5. Had some engine trouble the day I got it. After weeks of misdiagnosis I got it sorted but hated the car due to all the issues.
      Took it to an off road pay and play to try and destroy it so I could justify another car.
      I couldn't get it stuck, climbed everything I pointed it at and kept up with some modified ones.
      End of the day I was so impressed I stuck all terrains on it and kept it for 15years. Broke my heart when the chassis gave out.

      Amazing, unique terrain. Hope to get to Australia at some point for a few weeks touring the tracks. Never heard of disabling dsc to help. I would have thought the terrain response in low range would override any negative aspects of dsc. The range rovers and lr3/4s do work well off road except the low profile tires. Ended up putting 18" wheels and bfg at kos on my lr3. Even then, dont air down through mud and rock as greater risk of getting crap between bead and a flat tire.

    The Land Rover terrain response system never quite gives up does it? It may take a few seconds to work it out, but it gives the vehicle traction in the end even if its just to one wheel. That is quite an achievement on street tyres, but then again you guys really know what you are doing. Not sure I could do the same without fitting A/T tyres.

    • @lror
      @lror  2 года назад +16

      Thank you 🍻 the terrain response is a good system but on a couple of other tracks it did "give up" as you say. Sometimes its just too much weight and traction on the needed wheel for it to send the torque over and keep going. Overall its one of the best tc systems.

    The thing most 4WDrivers don't know about the Range Rover L322 is the suspension's ability to emulate a beam axle by using the air suspension's 'cross flow' feature in low range. This coupled with each axle's ability to drop way below the centre-line (almost 300mm on the rear) so when coupled with competent driving, makes for impressive capability. Back in 2002, we operated Australia's first commercially operated Range Rover L322 TD6. Hundreds of Brits and US travellers came with us to enjoy the Blue Mountains & Hunter Valley from the perspective of exciting, safe, luxury 4WD touring.

    And all that with road tyres, that's why they are so brilliant off road.

    Very cool to see how well the RR did, other thing is it’s a heavy beast. Makes it even more impressive. Some very engineering.

    Beautiful driving, that looks awesome. I have an L319 with 275/65R18 Kenda Klever RT, and 20mm wheel spacers. They made such a big difference, it's a real pleasure getting good tyres.

      Im looking forward to new tyres. They should make a big difference especially with the l322 being so heavy.

      @@lror were you surprised how different they feel to lockers?

    • @lror
      @lror  2 года назад

      @@UZZ30 not really actually. Especially when comparing to the disco or 110 when they still had open diffs, line choice was super important. But the automatic transmission felt very different, it felt very spongy compared to a manual needing to play with throttle input way more than clutch to have just the right amount. Hope that sort of makes sense.

    Truly amazed at what the Range was capable of....I still maintain though a simple diff-lock would be better twin-locked of course.

      Lockers over traction control for sure.

    90% of the problems the car suffered were due to tyres. A decent set of BFG A/T's and it would have been much easier. Had Rangies for 25 years , have never let me down due to inability to navigate off road. Electrics seldom make the car actually inoperable, at least in my experience. It is, though, a bit of an addiction, Rangies do that to you.

    • @lror

      Definitely a good set of tyres would have helped a lot. Stay tuned new tyres will be on soon.

      The only problem is you would need to also change the wheels 16-17 even 18" in order to get some decent AT tyres I had trouble finding decent ones for my 18" wheels got some 31" BFG ATs in the end.

      Bfg tyres are trash

    • @peterprice7250
      @peterprice7250 Год назад

      you can't change wheel sizes due to brakes. but you can use AT tyres with some trimming of wheel arches according to my tyre guy....
      I have a 2011 4.4 and 2016 4.4 and love them to bits....
      the 8 speed ZF transmission is amazing. I can overtake 5 cars with caravans uphill, me towing a boat and the car just goes.....

    I used to love taking my 99’ Disco II off-roading with my brother’s Jeep club. Blew their minds how it could not only keep up, but look relaxed doing it. They all had jacked up Rubicons, etc. All I had was Yokohama Geolanders… btw this L322 could use some.
