I love the Anastasia fabric with the burgundy fabric at the top. I will be buying some for totes for my relatives. Here is a tip I've used on a few totes I've made. Leave the opening for turning in the side seam of the lining. It's easier to finish and top stitch the top edge without trying to close a seam at the same time. The seam in the lining doesn't have any quilting to deal with and it's usually hidden when the bag is finished. Love your videos. You make the projects look so easy and they inspire me to tackle new techniques. Thank you.
I have made several of these and I add a pocket to the lining and I also like to add a snap for closure. Thank you for a great tutorial! Keep them coming!
That is awesome! Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial and we have even more fun tutorials to try so go check them out! Thank you for your support and comment! - Abby
I am a complete beginner and I have just made my first tote bag, following this tutorial. It was so easy to follow. Thank you so much! I am already planning my next one. x
I did it! What a fun project. I’m giving a quilt as a gift and I made this to put the rolled quilt into. It turned out great. Perfect for fat quarters.
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial. I am 78 years old and haven’t sewn in more than 25 years and never quilted. I got my old Bernina out to make masks for my family and friends and to donate. I found your site and used your patterns and the masks are beautiful. I even had customers who saw my family wearing them. It was great because it helped pay for the supplies. I had no idea of the cost of fabric or notions these days. I have Coats and Clark cotton thread with a manufacturers price on the label of 59 cents. Now I am ready to do my first quilting project. I am making the tote. You make it seem so very easy. My favorite set of fabric at this time is the coming soon design Hummingbird. Thanks for the opportunity to win the tote you made. Fingers crossed.
Hi Jen what a lovey video and very refreshing seeing a video that isn't a kit, LOVE the material. The only thing I do differently is I leave a gap in the bottom of the lining and pull through from there. That way you don't see it at all as it is in the inside of your bag Thank you so much for sharing this video - LOVED IT.
I've been making bags for several years this way after watching Jennifer in earlier videos. Actually all the seams are hidden and no hand stitching in the clever way she does it. Isn't she a great teacher? 😊
Thank you so much for your videos have helped me with the lock down in the United Kingdom by taking my mind off things and give me some great ideas for my own quilting and sawing thank you again
Very similar to my bags. I can't make them fast enough for family and friends! I do 2 sizes generally but this pattern is flexible and the sky is the limit
Jen I do make bags but yours is easier than mine thankyou for sharing how you do yours. I’m going to make one with you directions and video it’s a beautiful bag
Love all your fabrics, difficult to give a collection! Your fabrics are so classic and elegant, and playful. Thank you for all you do with teaching and your kits.
There's so many to choose from, but I really do like the Anastasia collection. I was never a fan of big flower prints, but this reached out and grabbed me! The burgundy just sets it off. Thanks Jen!
Cute tote bag. I love making tote bags. They are so handy for many things. I either leave an opening in the lining fabric or I do the drop in method for the lining. Great video Jen. 💕🧵🛍
Sophie by Brenda Riddle Designs for Moda....LOVE! And this tutorial is on my To Do list, thank you for all of the awesome content you provide for all of us. Hugs and Please Be Well.
Gorgeous fabrics....they made my mouth water!!! Thanks for another great video, Jen. You make it look so very easy! I will be making this bag today! Thank you so much.
Using the 45 degree line on the side of the bag whilst doing your 3 inch measurement when boxing corners aids accuracy of the end product. I do this far more often since I started doing boxed corners
Beautiful bag. I love this way of making bags because they can be made to be reversible. Such a clever idea! I first learned how to make bags this way, several years ago from your tutorials, Jennifer, before fat quarters were so popular. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for your clear and concise instructions! I just finished one and love it! It is truly the right size for a tote. I did put some pockets in the lining. It’s a great idea for fat quarters as well. Your videos are wonderful! 👏🧵✂️❤️
That is so funny, I got to watching to the point where she is sewing the top of the bag... I was going to write my thoughts and everyone else did too. When I learned that trick to making bags it was so much easier and more fun to sew bags when you leave or seam rip the side open so I could just sew all the way around the top of the bag. This process makes sewing a bag so much more fun. Good luck to all. Btw she is so much easier than others to sewing items together.
Awesome video, and gorgeous fabric. You made it look so easy. I've never made a tote bag with a liner, but it wouldn't be difficult now that I have seen your video. Thanks so much.
I ordered the fat quarters in the Seventh Heaven Aqua set, can’t wait to get started! This will be a tote for my granddaughter who is getting married in April!
This is such a stunning collection!!! Thank you for this tutorial! I have ordered the fat quarter bundle to make this for my sister! This is probably my favorite collection, however, Folktale rates right up there with the Anastasia!!
Very cute bag. If you leave a hole in the side of the lining to turn the bag, I think it would be easier to close the hole and no one can see the stitching to close the hole.
This is a fantastic tutorial! I just made one using "The Office" gray printed fabric for the main and a black and white polka dot for the lining, handles, and top. I followed everything you did and the bag turned out great! I cant wait to try this with other fat quarters I have :^) Thanks again!
We're glad you enjoyed this project! We do have a variety of tote projects available here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video?search=tote -Michelle
You may want to try it this way once to see what you think. All the seams are hidden and and there is no hand stitching. You may find you really like it. It really is simple and quite clever! Aren't Jennifer's videos just wonderful? 😊
When the opening for turning is on the top of the bag, you can easily top stitch with your machine. If you stitch all the way around it becomes a design element of the bag and disguises the opening. I think if it was on the side, your stitching would be very noticeable unless you did it by hand.
I agree with leaving the opening at the top! With plastic bags being banned in my area recently and all stores having to charge customers to provide a paper bag, I have been making LOADS of totes for shopping. I started by leaving the opening in the bottom of the bag, then the side. It works fine, and its just a shopping bag, but once I started doing it the along the top, the top stitch closes it up AND it’s completely disguised! It’s a much cleaner look, imo. I am looking forward to making one of these totes. Love the fabrics you used! That Burgundy really does set it all off! Thanks for all the great tutorials!

Love this tip Just found this tutorial skimming Shabby fabrics videos.. think your tip is great and will make sewing top of bag easier.
