I mean, his whole entire character was about self lies and deciept. He wants to think that he’s as good as the player, since he is the champion’s brother. He knows he isn’t strong. Bede pointed it out to him.

It's especially bad when you realise that that was actually his first Pokémon. Doubly so when you realise he promised that same Wooloo to win the league together with it in Twilight Wings.

Beating Hop feels so bad, you are literally his best friend but you're keep crushing his dream. In a real life, I would have totally train with him for weeks.
I actually really like Hop's character writing, I don't think I have ever felt bad for winning a pokemon battle with a rival before and rather than simply walking all over him and him being all happy, like Hau and the rivals from X and Y, he actually gets depressed and loses motivation which is pretty sad, because it makes Hop feel more like a realistic character.
same! sure, he does kind of feel a little bit like hau, but at least hop feels like a real person with emotions and ambitions. i really wish he didn’t get as much hate as he does:

The post game part in the Slumbering Weald was honestly really sad. You ofcourse beat the Swordward/Shielberd of your game but Hop lost. He just wanted to be like his brother only for Bede and you to just demolish him every single time. Even Sonia pointed it out in-game how sad it must be to be to be him
That last fight when he gets Zacian/Zamazenta, and he intermits each defeated Pokémon with a line or two about his perspective of the whole journey. Most wholesome fight in the game, and one of the best in the series.
Yeah, that final battle you have with him in the Weald after you both catch the box-legendaries... The commentary he gives makes me think that for him, it's the most personal. "You and Sonia followed your own paths... I was the only one left behind, struggling to keep up!"
Hop doesn't deserve as much hate as he gets. He is one of the only characters in the entire series that shows genuine character development, and your rivalry ties in with your friendship amazingly. Personally, I don't think he was ever annoying. I enjoyed every single battle with him, especially the final one, and Hop is genuinely my favourite character, he feels like a real person.
The only annoying thing about Hop is that after some points where his character was pretty fleshed out and didn't need more screentime, he got it, when it should have gone to Marnie or Bede.

Yep. I’m going to be a bit sad if hop’s not in the anime but at the same time it’ll be cool to see them go with a new approach and not include game characters.
I won't lie, Hop kinda annoyed me at first. He just felt like such a generic happy rival with nothing special. Then when Bede beat him, I started to feel really bad for him. When I beat him in the Championship tournament, I felt like total crap. The development for this character is so good. He might be my favorite friendly rival in the Pokemon series
At first, I hated Hop with a passion. Constantly going off about his brother and just him being so extra/giddy all the time. I was even happy after Bede destroyed him, being that he wouldn't shut up about being him being Leon's younger brother and that he's going to be the future champion. It was when I saw the mood change and that made me realize something. Throughout the game I was constantly beating him and as he started to doubt himself, I started to feel terrible. I felt the worst when I beat him in the championship where I destroyed his purpose for setting out in the first place, his dream. That last fight though man and this music. He embraced it, found himself, had one last battle and I'm now in proud to call Hop my rival.
You can tell that there's a blind faith in himself to succeed. A reputation to keep. Just to make sure that he can keep up with and defeat his brother. Heck, even at the start. Choosing the worst starter type against you, but the best typing against his brother. Tries as he might to keep a shine in his eyes, it eventually dulls the more times he's told that he sucks by Bede and the rival's words are proven by you.
@@mcihay246 Hop gets more and more depressed over the course of the game as he realizes he'll never be Champion or even a good trainer, he lost in the semifinal lol.
@@halfmoon106 Good thing that by the semifinal, he's pretty much accepted things at that point. So it's good that he strives for a self-fulfilling goal that doesn't involve the reliance of another. He's actually similar to Marnie and Bede. All three rivals strived for fame from the League, not necessarily for themselves but mainly for something else. Hop strived to keep a reputation that's comparable to his older brother. Bede strived to show his appreciation for Chairman Rose, to show that the faith put on him wasn't to waste. Marnie strived to popularise Spikemuth, her rundown and small hometown. Where everyone knows everybody like a family. Luckily, all three discover what they themselves want to be happy in the end.
I love how this sounds cheery and happy at the beginning of the game but by the end sounds more somber, introspective, and sad. All while still being the same theme. Really impressive.
I probably am because I got off Pokémon Shield not even an hour ago and I am getting really confused because a lot of these comments are talking about a slap when Hop hits the Pokeball and I don't remember any slap.
When I played this I didn't see hop as my rival, I saw him and treated him like my best friend, despite being a fictional character, I felt a bond with him, a special bond that no other rival in the games had with me.
When I beat Hau: Hau Imma become stronger! Me You go do that! He’s a nice guy. When I beat Hop: Hop Dammit... Me Oh shit are you alright?! I am so so so so sorry...
when i beat the full game i realized something when i started to like hop. all of my experience was as if i was a new pokemon in a new team, and i was anxious and stressed, but hop was my trainer and kept me happy through the whole experience. thats how i feel like anyway. i feel this way because this is my first pokemon game ever, and i was always curious about this franchise, but also scared. but then everything worked out in the end, and now i love hop with all my heart. hes a great friend- no. rival.
I love the final battle. The same music playing in the background that you’ve listened to your whole adventure as hop slowly comes to terms with who he wants to be. It and the champion battle really got to my emotions. It almost makes you nostalgic for when you were first starting out as you look at how far you’ve come in the place it all began.
I think Hop is a friendly rival done well. His dialogue and character development is much better compared to Hau and other friendly rivals in previous games
Ok, may I just say Hop is such an amazing character, sure he can be annoying with "My brother, the undefeatable champion, Leon" but every time I see him I just want to give him a big hug. He's so supportive and wholesome. He instantly makes my depression disappear. 😁
@@DraftyDaftyHubertOHare Well, he does get recognized as a legendary hero by one of the two wolves by the end and finds what he really wants to do with his life so it's not all bad. His losing animation during the finals did kinda make me feel bad, though. Doubly so because my Dynamaxed Inteleon made it rain.
@Nicholas Sakoi true I didn’t like him as a person either but it was worse how he was forced to be your friend by the game at least that’s what they referred to him as even though I despised him
I don’t get why people hate Hop. Sure he holds your hand a bit too much in the beginning, but he has the best character development out of any Pokémon rival. He’s definitely one of my favorites.
Daniel Ochs I think hop has more development than silver tbh, and that’s coming from someone who’s played soulsilver 10+ times, he has a good arc but I feel that silver is just edgy
I don’t think people hate him, just the audacity gamefreak went with Pokémon Home, Bank, Exclusives, and that sword and shield cost more, and that it has a lot of problems that even 9 year olds can see, and that we have to pay more if we want to see our beloved Pokémon in a new console. I’m no gamefreak apologist, but everything in the game was ok(a little bad though, no postgame content), but everything about gamefreak’s choices with Pokémon right now make people hate everything about the game
Dunno if anyone's already pointed this out, but I adore how Hop goes from the face slap that Leon does, back to the shoulder roll and the slap, after he realizes his purpose before his last battle with you. Character progression by action, love it, love it
Hop is a GREAT rival tbh He can get annoying But his interjections add character He has his own goals and motives He wants to be his own person It’s his whole character He is a contender for best rival Can Hau say the same? He has a precious smile And his frown makes us feel bad No other rival makes us feel like that So show Hop some love Rematch the league Invite him to join you And let him win for once
@Miku Mouse Stan obviously, I never said that. The thing is though, having a friendly rival that doesn’t even care is extremely boring. Destroying blue was fun, destroying hop was not.
To all kind comment toward Hop, to all of you who see his character development, to all of you who feel guilty to crush his dream and his hop(e), to all of those who Hop is their favourite ( or at least you like him ) rival, thank you, your an incredible person.
Toby fox in the dev room: What if we make the player feel bad for playing the game normally and beating their rival? It worked for me... Edit: guys it's just a joke. I know his involvement was limited to one song. Something like 20 people have commented the same thing. Catch a clue.
Its a little less noticable, but he does the same when in raboot evolution. Cinderace just kinda stands there in a cocky manner. Don't ask me how i know this
Hop is not only the first rival to catch a legendary pokemon, but will likely be the first professor to have one too. Edit: forgot N and Gladion, my bad. Edit 2: ^ N also might technically not count as a rival really. It's debatable. Edit 3: whether or not N is a rival is debatable. However by definition of the word "rival" he is *technically* not, since his goal is different than the player's. Edit 4: Looked it up, Silvally and Type:Null are legendary Pokemon. Edit 5: According to Bulbapedia, Type:Null belonged to Gladion after he freed it, meaning he technically caught it. In conclusion, Hop is the 2nd or 3rd rival to catch a legendary, technically. (2nd in the most technical of senses.)
I forgot about that. Next up he’s prob gonna be the professor in the next game, setting up a timeline for all the lil 12 year olds yeeting red balls at violent monsters 🙀
But I never like the “friendly rival” as I’m sure he is nice just like Hau....Won’t stope me from absolutely demolishing his hopes and dreams to become champ. Honestly should have gone for the Pokémon that’s has the type advantage over you.
@Almighty Cephalo-God I know this was a year ago, but wow are you right. It feels like a mesh between some sonic heroes level music and some classic sonic adventure music
Honestly I hated hop at the beginning, but I started to understand him. His only dream in his life was to beat his brother and he fell flat on his face. Probably the best rival character development in my opinion. It almost made me feel kinda bad when I whooped his ass at the end, I almost lost on purpose. ( And he's not a sore loser either.) My first playthrough I didn't really understand what was happening with him, but when I played it again I started to understand.
@@blackheartzerotheundergrou3225 He still hadn't even filled out his party, though. Sure they've got to keep the rival battles from being too challenging, but the game was already easy enough and having certain encounters where you have to fight a full team would've made the rival battles more interesting anyway.
Nate Wilson I think what makes the game easy is the early exp share and the Pokémon learning good moves early. In earlier generations like gen 2 (god bless that game it’s amazing) a lot of Pokémon would start off weak and require switch trading or strategic grinding in the early game. Examples: eevee, every bug type, most first form Pokémon, togepi, abra, Magikarp but technically you get a free Gyrados before the exp share so it doesn’t count. In addition enemy Pokémon would always spike up in level every short period of time when you play. Also unlike sword and shield the old games had mostly first forms for until like the 7th gym. Let’s not forgot reds team of LEVEL 80 POKÉMON ON MOUNT SILVER. Gen one was similar but when op exp share was added well you know. Also back in the day there were less evolutions and it would take a long time to get a stab move with good overall stats.
@@user-ni7ui1nk8p I feel like what you like about Johto I question if it was done out of drunken stupidity. Sure, the flat levels make it more open, but in return grinding takes eons to get like 5 levels. If there's one region that needs the broken exp share, it's Johto.
hop is a secret crossover character. • from a pokémon game. • theme has a bit of flower garden at the start and later on it sounds like mario and luigi: superstar saga. • s a n s j a c k e t .
Rise Evolve I’ve played through the whole game and I can definitely say that he does actually get challenging if you are not prepared, and like even if you destroy him, this music absolutely slaps it’s just so good, personal opinion, the music in this game is incredible
@@radarred4529 Silvally was confirmed a legendary, and if you are not going by that info, N's over there. (Yes i still love hop, and am very happy for the child, but Gladion DOES have Silvally, and N, while not being a rival in every single sense, is generally considered as one(after all, he wants to be champion and get a legendary too))
@@radarred4529 why don't you tell me why there is two mewtwos? Mewtwo and Silvally both are man-made legendaries. As such, if anyone was to get the notes on how to make them(aHEM-), they could make more. If that doesn't suit you, what about Entei's dex entry? Or the Galarian legendary birds?Latios and Latias, Sogaleo and Lunala? Fact of the matter is: legendary just means RARE AND POWERFUL. While oftentimes they are the only of their kind, there can be multiple of some.
Such a good song. Full of hope and wonder with a groove marching to beat of your own drum. Then *DEPRESSION* and you realize this theme might actually plays in his head to help him cope the rest of the game. The other sad part is he actually isn't even a bad trainer yet everyone gives him crap, he managed to achieve very much second only to the player themselves. So much the opposing version legendary sees something in him and catches it with a single Poke'Ball no less. I think the Sword and Shield Dynamic makes sense, he's like your bro that always has your back. Honestly this sort of makes Hop the best 'Friendly' Rival so far. He has optimism hope, and actual ambition you get that in his rival theme for one, but you see him all ways trying to improve always on the Attack (Sword to *Your* Shield) or how how he always tries to hold out and while his strength may not be on your level he's always there ready to support you and the others (A Shield to *Your* Sword).

Felt exactly the same. At first I thought he was so generic and annoying. Then overtime he grew on me.
You crush Hop's dreams.
You get the starter strong against Hop.
Hop isn't the rival.
YOU ARE.
A rival is competition against one and another on a personal level. This is being an enemy
But I didn't want to TwT
To be fair with the Starter thing, he let you choose first and he still went with the type disadvantage against yours
...I've lived long enough to *BECOME THE VILLAIN.*
@@dionhazelnut4055 ...But with the type advantage against his brother.
It hit me right in the feels when I realized I was being a complete jerk for one-uping him in literally everything.
It was then, when we realized...we were Blue, and Hop was Red.
We were the Jerk Rival we always wanted.

Everyone: "No."
This is so true it hurts my S O U L .
More like "NO!"
