    Romain, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race - I don’t remember what race - he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

      @@earthb67 the drivers grow up using these kinds of buttons in junior formula series, and nearly all of them aren't on any pay check, even formula 3 drivers, it's just the pinnacle of the motorsport where you see some serious paychecks that comes from the fame. Omg! I would need a class on each button individually that affects the car! I've seen Lewis Hamilton, during a race, make adjustments for virtually every turn on the fly. He's adjusting brake balance, possibly the differential as well and having a conversation with Toto while negotiating a turn and racing another car. That is an incredible feat that very few can perform successfully with consistency.

    This makes me think of George Russell subbing for Lewis, going from the Williams wheel with no on-wheel LED screen to the Mercedes system and then back again right near the end of the racing season. I hadn't given that any thought then. So many opportunities for mistakes every lap, especially when the heart rate is up. This makes it more impressive.

    Thanks Romain! Question: If there’s a button to indicate tire deg, does that mean most of the “tires are gone” type talk is bluffing? Or is it just to emphasize the point that the tires are going?

    • @giacomoneri1782
      @giacomoneri1782 2 года назад

      The teams can see the switches and buttons positions, so if they have an agreement it is possible to bluff. I think the Mercedes for example got 3 buttons that does nothing on the car. The "PC" (pit confirm), the "X" and the "mark", that sets a marker in the telemetry if the driver needs to recall something at a certain point (it was widely used in 2020 preseason tests when they activated the DAS, probably cause they wanted to see in the telemetry exactly where the device was activated, the "marker" text on the dash wasn't actually activated by DAS itself). Plus they got the tyre switch, that sets the car for different thread thickness, they can use that as well, they won't be setting it for new tyres when the tyres are actually gone

    What a fantastic and detailed rundown. Huge thank you (and here's hoping you don't get called into Günther's office 😋)
    Quick question about the quick switches. Did you mean that the switch position could be set up with a range of settings that change together? So right switch up had preset settings for differential, brake balance, energy recovery etc, and right switch down has the same elements but with different settings... So that you could have switch up with the basic settings for long open parts of the track, and switch down with the basic settings for an area with a sequence of tight corners?
