Hi Todd. Lincolnshire in England here! Your excellent video has perfectly summarised the difference between when I putt well and when that form suddenly disappears for no apparent reason. The thing is, I’d never thought of looking at it that way. I will now though. Thanks so much for yet another brilliant lesson!
Hi, Todd. Two weeks of using this tip, and it still holds up. So many golf techniques I've tried help temporarily, and then they become the flaw I'm trying to correct later. Your little mental adjustment has changed my whole approach around and on the green. I shot my best score on my home course yesterday (I'm 68), mostly through improved putting and some good chipping. I'm lagging way better, and putts inside ten feet are dropping in with a higher percentage.
JD near Tampa, FL I recently made the decision to stop watching other video sources - to watch US Golf exclusively. Too much conflicting information is not improving my game. I've decided to focus on my short game - Putting & Chipping. I stumbled upon this video just after I purchased a 10 foot practice putting mat for the house. I set it up in a room so I can just go in and sink 10 putts in a row several multiple times a day. As I practice putting as you suggest - just gather the facts - take out the emotion and putt the ball into the cup. I had a few days of practice before we played our next scheduled round of golf. On the first hole green I set up just as I practiced at home - gathered the facts without emotion and sank a 6 foot putt. I continued the process and had 15 putts on the front 9 with similar success on the back 9. I gained confidence over the ball by telling myself - "It's just like the practice mat at home - putt the ball to the back of the cup" - I stroked the ball well and the vast majority dropped into the cup. Thanks for the great golf tips Todd!
Jack, thank you for the vote of confidence in our ability to help you enjoy this great game. We are here to help. Have you read my book, The Bad Lie where I cover the entire VLS system? Here is the link if you would like to continue learning www.badliegolfbook.com/
Thank you Susan. If you enjoy reading, i suggest checking out my book as it covers the game in detail. Here is the Amazon link if interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
You are absolutely right, golf requires the correct mental focus especially when putting. The golf course is no place for self criticism, loathing, negativity, and putting pressure on yourself. Focus on the shot presented to you and determine how to approach it based on your skill level.
Todd, thank you for another great video. I left a comment on another video asking for a bit of help in determining the break. Anyway per another video of yours, I ordered the rimer ball trainer (should be here soon). I noticed, however, at 3m55s in this video it seems the ball is more in the front of your stance vs. like a 7 iron. Is there a reason for this or can I stick with the suggestion that you can have it slightly in the back of the stance like a 7 iron. This position has been working well for me. Lastly, I am from San Francisco, CA and practice mostly at the putting green at the Presidio. Edited: Whoops, in rewatching the earlier video I see that I had it wrong and that the stance is more the left of center.
Todd, I am reading your book, and it is great. I note one issue, though. Chapter 14, page 87, Ball position bullet points. You highlight the driver and irons. No mention of fairway woods or hybrids?
Dang! This is the dumbest thing I've heard for putting advice, and, unbelievably, it totally works. I tried this technique this morning and for the first time in forever I won the putting in my senior league. Just talking my way through distance, break and slope made all the difference. I backed it up and did the same thing with my pitches onto the green too, and that helped. Thanks for the tip!
Mobile Bay Alabama - hey for me also making a putt should not be a huge surprise. I made a 40 foot birdie putt yesterday and truthfully the 3 other guys were more amazed and vocal then me. Don’t get me wrong a 40 footer is not very common for me to make at all. I just thought to myself after it dropped hey that worked out.
Jack, nothing better than making a long putt to top off the day. Congrats! I have a full chapter on putting in my book, The Bad Lie www.badliegolfbook.com/
1. Computer - works out what to do. 2. Athlete - make a good stroke/swing along the intended line. 3. Commentator. I guess that works for full shots too.
Reading my pre-putt mind! I think about everything that might go wrong. Gonna clear this 66 YO mind and analyze pertinent data, then execute. Thanks Todd form suburban Detroit.
July and August are crazy busy as far as golf is concerned. Sept is goid, weather is generally dry and there's lots of available on the courses. Give me a shout when you get over here. :)
People waste their practice strokes. I take practice strokes that match the speed I want to hit the putt. From a 4 footer, to a 60 footer. Then, I pick a very specific start line. I’m confident that repeating my practice stroke will give me the correct speed, so I put that out of my head. I can then concentrate 100% of my efforts on starting it perfectly on my start line. I don’t think about my technique, or mechanics. And I definitely don’t worry about the result of the putt, as I’m hitting it. They all won’t go in, but it’s amazing how many that will.
Great tip! Watching from Minnesota
Thank you. Minnesota has some great courses.

Our pleasure. Can you golf 12 months a year in Brazil?
Makes sense thanks. I am from South Africa. 64 years old. What is the best way to hit out of thick grass rough?
Use a 5 or 6 hybrid,.
We like the hybrid more out of the rough many times vs. a long iron. ruclips.net/video/t9WvLB8kzoE/видео.html
