    Nice video and helpful
Here’s a few additional thoughts. Remember, breaking 90 means all bogeys and one par. Bogeys are good for higher handicap golfers. Pars are equivalent to birdies. Every bogey gets you closer to your goal!
So how to play bogey golf?
    1) Remove half the clubs in your bag. Only carry the clubs you like to hit. Result: more good strikes, increased confidence, more control and a lighter bag (good if you carry!).
    2) Use any club you want off the tee. Pick the club that reliably advances your ball down the fairway and in play (always in play). This strategy will eliminate stress and put you in a better position to make more bogeys and pars.
    3) Practice 2, 3 and 4 foot putts. Making those putts reduces stress, makes lag putting easier, and is devastating to your partners when they hear your ball roll into the jar. Be automatic.
    4) Approach the game like it’s a beautiful walk (or drive) in the park with your best friends, because that’s what it is.
    5) Leave the past behind. If you make a bad shot, have a good laugh at yourself, and carry on. Nobody gives a shite.
    6) Have fun playing the greatest game ever invented.

Biggest tip I could say that worked for me was not to add my score up till I holed out on 18.
Takes all the pressure off you... Lots of times I would tee it up on 18 knowing I needed 3-4-5-6 or whatever to break 90 and I would mess it up... A couple of weeks after I stopped adding them up I broke 90 for the 1st time with 84.
2nd biggest tip for me... If I missed the fairway and had more than a 7 iron left to reach the green... Hit wedge back onto the fairway... Cuts out all those 6-7-8's that you get when you take on low percentage shots.
As for putting I have always believed that pace is absolutely everything in putting.
If you can control your distances well you mostly eliminate 3 putts (which usually happen frequently for players shooting over 90).
If your second putts are always from 2 feet or less... Putting is pretty simple.
My biggest bunker tip (worked well for me) spend 2 hours in a practice bunker.... After that you will always get the ball out 1st time and you will learn to actually start thinking of getting it close to the pin from a bunker... After spending 1 afternoon in a bunker I was opening up a 4 iron and flopping it out (trust me its not that hard once you get confident in bunkers)

This is a great way to practice as well rather than beating balls from a mat which gives you a perfect lie every time & can give you the wrong feedback by allowing your club to bounce into the ball. You have to practice from course conditions or at least grass if possible. Mats are fine for warming up or working on mechanics. This is why many complain that they can't take their range swing to the course. You don't HAVE to keep score every time you play.

Todd, another great video. Right from the first tip, yep if I try to HIT it I usually find myself having to find the ball as opposed to playing the ball. If I can play from the fairway, I can usually have a pretty good day out on the course. I have a set of hybrids in my bag, my irons start at 6, but my hybrids are 19/22/25/28. As far as the one club chipping, I use two. I have the Cleveland Sole set, a chipper and a sand wedge. It takes so much pressure off my shot game to know that I can have a consistant swing from anywhere 60-70 yds in with just those two clubs. And putting, I always think two putt, leave myself a gimmie or close to it. The other thing I do mentally is think ahead of time about the course, and for most holes I mentally give myself an extra shot. So a par 5 is now a 6, a 4 is a 5 etc. That way if I do get a par or even a birdie I have "extra" shots on my score card to keep me 90 or below. It also keeps me from getting down on myself if I do bogey a hole. If I can play bogey golf with a par or two I am breaking 90 every time.

Ok so I did like the hybrid clubs from Adams. I shot a couple rounds in the low 90’s.
I did 2 things, 1st I bought a full set of Hybrids from Lazrus, 20% off this month. I hit my irons good, when I hit them good. I hit my hybrids better. It’s different, but I like the all hybrid clubs.
After watching this video and also seeing it on a couple rounds, I was 3 putting too much. A tip, I started using a hybrid or 5 wood to putt off the fringe, those 50-70+ putts. It’s gets me very close to the cups.
2nd thing I worked only on chipping and pitching on a specific range trip. The next time out, using these tips from Todd here in the video, some I was already using.
I blew past 90, I shot an 82! Yay! Now to keep it there.

My best clubs are 3 4 5 iron tho I use my 7 the most and is prob my fav club but my most comfy shots are with the low # irons
I'm pretty good with the driver but if you are having problems with the driver , I would highly suggest getting a diff driver because it can be a game changer
Also on the shorter to greens shots try using a 7 iron and use it like a putter for the moat part
Also another big thing that can help is knowing your distance for each club and giving yourself a smart safe average with each and understanding your gaps between certain clubs and how to avoid being in the 20 to 30 yard gaps in distance from club to club

Great video, I agree with most everything. My handicap went up 2.5 strokes this year from bad instruction that I didn't know was bad until it was too late. The one thing I have the hardest time with is a Hybrid. I have tried a lot of them and none of feel right to me, I end up going back to my long irons. Love the master one club. I do this on the range when I warm up. I pick one club every year and use it to warm up and hit 25-40 balls. last year was my 7, this year my 8. I wouldn't say I'm a master but I am extremely confident my 8 iron will get 155-160 every time and close to my target. Course management is, get me to 150 and I'll be on the green with my 8 iron. The green is my target, not the pin. This leads to lag putting (2 putt) I might 3 putt 2 holes a round and that's a lot for me. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you.

I have been chipping with a 9 iron from a few feet to around 40 feet off the green. I cannot believe how naturally the ball checks up once it hits the green, and seems to just walk to the pin. This has eliminated huge mistakes with my 56 or 60 degree. It has knocked about 4 strokes off my rounds, and gives me greater confidence.

I finally broke 90 this summer -twice! I attribute it to haven taken lesson from Golftec for two years and by practice my shot game/puttin mote than just hammering balls on the driving range. I also do not, at this time even carry a Driver in my bag because I can keep my 3rd in the fairway on a more consistent basis. I also don’t try to make a miracle shot when I’m in jail in the woods! Finally I can normally get out of bunkers with a single shot.

I consistently shoot in the low to mid 80's. I was having problems with my short game and decided to start using my 9 and 8 irons for chipping. A bump and run to the pin always works better for me rather than using the pitching wedge. It is hard for me to make the ball loft to the pin because I will more than likely chunk the shot. I have developed my swing for the bump and run so that it works for me. How far I am chipping determines which club I will use. If I am 20+ feet off of the green, I will use the 8-iron. If I am 5 to 20 feet off of the green, I will use the 9-iron. If I am closer than 5 feet, I will probably use my putter to get to the pin. What you are teaching may work for others, but my methods are more convenient for me. Maybe others can benefit from trying my method if they are having problems with the chunking. Hope this helps.

Todd, this was really a great video. I think a video on course management would be helpful. My only hesitation on using a sand wedge for all chips is that on tight lies (like you get a lot here in NM) the higher bounce on the SW can make it difficult to hit the ball cleanly. For that reason I would probably go with a gap wedge which has less bounce.

I broke 90 for the first time a little more than a year after I began playing golf seriously (at age 36), shooting an 83 in tournament play, and I was an 8 handicap by the time I had been playing golf for 4 or 5 years. I also broke 70, shooting a 68 on a par-70 course, in my 6th year playing golf. However, I am now in my 70s, and carry a USGA handicap index that fluctuates between 13 and 15. I have carried one or two hybrid clubs in my bag for several years, and currently have a 22* #4 hybrid, plus a 20* 7-wood in my bag. At my age, I also find that a 3-wood is not of much use to me, so I go from driver to a 17.5* strong 5-wood that is 41.75" long. I can hit this club 220 yards very consistently from the tee, and about 210 yards from the fairway, sometimes a bit more. My 7-wood is great for use off the tee when I want to hit the ball 200 yards and hit a specific section of the fairway. My 22* hybrid is my 180-190 yard club, and my longest iron is a 6-iron with a strong loft of 24.5*, which is my 165-170 yard club. Anyone struggling to break 90 could learn something from my bag setup, but even more important than that they need to learn and practice smart course management and avoid taking penalty strokes. I shot an 80 in a very competitive golf tournament two weeks ago by staying out of trouble and only having one penalty stroke (thanks to a dumb decision on my part). However, a few days ago I shot 89 in competition, because I was in a few hazards and took two penalties where I hit my ball into areas where I should not have been attempting forced carries. This resulted in 4 penalty strokes .... that kind of stuff adds up very fast and will ruin a good round in a hurry!

@@USGOLFTVshow - Thank you! One other thing that I would add is that ALL golfers need to learn how to hit a proper punch shot to get back in play when they are “stymied”. You can hit a punch shot with anything from a hybrid to a 6, 7, or 8 iron, depending on how low you need to keep the shot and how much (or how little) run-out you want to get once the ball is back in the fairway.

    Hi Todd,
My golf game is based in Belfast, and my home club (Royal Belfast Golf Club) places a premium on accuracy, so much so that any bunker play is severely testing, given hazards here are of a particularly hellish level. The intricate design by master golf architect Harry Colt allows for an ample challenge. However, this mindset you have projected may lead to something of an improvement in my quest to ultimately break 90 sooner rather than later (your short game advice has been particularly enlightening). Will implement this strategy on course and let you know if it works for me, (although I mightn’t immediately get an 18-hole round in) if you are still happy to receive feedback (your 45 degree grip advice did wonders for addressing contact issue, so will take up the gauntlet again). Fairways and greens is my aspiration, but not at the expense of your concluding comment: namely enjoying the game of golf that little bit more.
Warm wishes from Belfast, Northern Ireland,
    Your fascinated and determined subscriber,
    Alex

The 19 since I hit it way more consistently than a 3 wood (even if shorter) and the 24 mostly to replace the longer irons which I also struggle to hit consistently. I would LOVE to see a video on course management, especialy if it included a variety of struggles or the themes that most comonly turn a bogey into a triple or quad.

Course management would save strokes. As someone who has officiated over 100 tourneys, and used to have a 4.75 handicap, I’ve seen/okayed a lot of golf. HOF Tommy Bolt said the drive was the most important shot. Fairway was important. With the pro’s, not do much now in most tourneys. Hybrids- absolutely! Chipping.. to break 90, maybe 1 club.. anything lower, at least 2. The short game is where it’s at! No question. Lag putting! Absolutely! The average tour pro is about 27’ on their 1st putt. This would save strokes as well. The punch shot explanation is perfect! If in trouble, GET OUT of it, don’t enhance it. Play conservative.
I would like to point out a couple of things as well. One, course management. Learn how to come in from the right angle. Learn to tee it up on the correct side. I would also point out that many people play from the wrong tees. Play from the tees that fit your skill level.
And lastly, learn the rules! I’ve had to penalize so many people because they didn’t play correctly. Most people, if played by the rules, probably couldn’t break 100.

I could never break 90 and always hovered around the 92-96 mark and totally agree with all these points. These days if I hit 90 I’m disappointed with my round and the biggest thing that helped me was putting from off the green.
Where ever you can use the putter you should as chances are, even if you are a poor putter you are more likely to get the ball closer then a chip. It also removed the duffs that barely move the ball and the ones you hit skinny and shoot across the green.

I now consistently shoot in the low nineties and high eighties if all is working well. I do all the things to do that you have featured. There is one additional thing I do that has really helped my game. I came to golf after being a competitive tennis player for over twenty years. I immediately found that looking at the hole on lag puts make a huge difference for me. Without it I am sure i would three putt much more often. It's like looking where you want the ball to go when you hit it in tennis. I am amazed that all most all golfers I play with do not do this. Any idea why it has not caught on with other golfers?

Well, you invited comments from others that may disagree with you ... here goes. You said that "The short game is important". I disagree. It is ESSENTIAL. Once you really understand that concept, it's easy to break 90.
All you have to do is spend 90% of all your practice time on the chipping and putting green. No need for lessons or any changes to what you're doing now. Your scores will improve more quickly and more dramatically than any other approach.

I have a 3 hybrid in my bag it is my replacement for a 4 and 3 iron and a 5 and 3 wood I hit a good shot 7-8 times out of 10 and I agree about the part where you say use one club chipping for me it's my 58°degree lob wedge I will put something else for you to think about if I was trying to break 90 which I do regularly a good drive and a good second shot will only get you under 💯 but you need to keep yourself to a chip and to putts so bogey golf par 4 and pinch a couple of pars on par 3s and par 5s and you might pinch a couple on par 4s as well but even if you get a couple of bad holes it's ok as long as you don't blow the worst scores out which most people do who are trying to break 90 it's about being comfortable with the club in hand I would advise everyone to swing every club in their bag 10-20 times the night before a game and repeat the same before you play on the day your playing and have 10 practice chips from different positions and lies and do that out of the bunker because we are not perfect we aren't professional golfers we are going to be in the trees or bunker or on a down slope or up slope practice for every situation it helps trust me I went from a 25 handicap 2 years ago to a 8 handicap now because of these reasons and I got a fitted set of irons wedges driver hybrid and most importantly putter most people think you don't need to get fitted for a putter which is wrong I use to use a 34-35 inch putter now my putter is a 33 inch with a mallet head I brought myself a Scotty Cameron phantom X12 which is the best for me but I would speak to a genuine pro who doesn't want to sell you the most expensive putter and go with how you feel.

Playing off 19. I find it much easier to use my Cobra hybrid 3 that hitting a 4 or 5i. Being i can hit the hybrid 190-210m gives me a lot of confidence using it off the tee or on par 5s. But never want to put the driver away cause i feel i'm not giving myself a chance to get better with it if it stays in the bag. 6i down Ive got no problem. Never confident hitting a 4 or 5. Found that what cost me the most shots is being errand off the tee funnily enough. BUT to answer the questions
    1) 100% agree. Bad drives cost me the most shots by far,
    2) Love my hybrid. Would score lower if i used that instead of the driver guaranteed but thats boring.
3)I use my 56'. Learning how to pitch with that correctly made a HUGE difference in hitting greens in reg and being able to recover.
    4) Took awhile to judge lag putting. Still working on it. What was easy to learn was putting inside 5 feet. Trusting the technique and makign sure the ball starts on path. Lost a lot of matches early on missing easy 3-4footers.
    5) need to work on my course management.
    6) Love bunkers. Splash the square around the ball every time!! great fun.

I was SURE you were going to endorse a “bump” or bump and run shot when chipping. I for one am MUCH more successful when chipping with a 9 or wedge rather than a sand wedge. Great video, the only tip I would question is the use of sand wedge for all chips as sand wedges normally have high bounce and can be tough to nip a chip off a tight fringe or fairway lie, imo it’s easier for me to use my 53 degree (mid bounce - 8 I think) off a tight lie and still open the face a bit in thick lies than try to nip the ball off a tight lie with a bouncy club and chunk it especially as a high handicapper cause nothing ruins your confidence around the greens like chunking it 3 yards and not reaching the dance floor!

I like your overall plan breaking 90. The one thing I found was the chipping. I find that a less lofted club than a sand wedge 50 degree or less is better. I use my 50 AW. I am less likely to stub it into the ground behind the ball and chunk it and more important I am less likely to bland the ball. Yes it will roll further but it's better to be on the green with a long putt than short or all the way through it. My 2 cents.

Looks like it has been one year since my previous comment here. Refreshing your amazing and EASY TO REMEMBER WHILE ON THE COURSE tips. I have a list of links to some of your videos that have helped me most, and to which I return - especially now while waiting for the ice to receed from the course up here in the cold North!

All three times I’ve broken 90 I put the driver away and used my 5 wood. Only missed 2 fairways all day and those two were in the rough. No OB off the tee! That’s the key for me
