I was 12 years old watching this game with my dad and my brother. As good Hoosiers we were used to watching Notre Dame football on Saturday and playing outside on Sunday afternoons, but not after that season. We thought Bailey caught it and we jumped up and down yelling "we're going to the Super Bowl" and hugging each other, then turned back and found out he dropped it. What a heart breaker. My brother called it the worst day of his life. It made finally going to the super bowl 11 years later that much sweeter.

The 9-7 #5 seed Colts in their first playoff appearance in eight years (after having gone 24 years without a playoff win) coming literally within inches of an out-of-nowhere AFC title against the Steelers looking to wash away the bad taste of the previous year's shocker to the Chargers. Marchibroda alluded to it at the start of this video - that Colts team played so many games that came down to the last play, whether it was against the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers or two games against the God-awful Jets. They could have gone 12-4 and they could have just as easily gone 6-10. Teams like that tend to be dangerous in the playoffs if they get there.

People in this city have this weird mindset that if a quarterback isn't a Hall of Famer, they're complete irredeemable garbage. O Donnell wasn't that good, but he wasn't awful either. He was the most accomplished QB for the Steelers in the 20 year drought between Bradshaw and Roethlisberger. Remember how bad the Mark Malone and Bubby Brister days were? Here's the stat lines for each starting QB from 84-2003:
      Bubby Brister: 55/57 (TD/INT), 69.8 (Rate), 52.5% (Cmp%)
      Mark Malone: 54/68 (TD/INT), 62.4 (Rate), 50.2% (Cmp%)
      Mike Tomczak: 37/43 (TD/INT), 71.6 (Rate), 56.1% (Cmp%)
      Kordell Stewart: 70/72 (TD/TNT), 72.3 (Rate), 56.5% (Cmp%)
      Tommy Maddox: 42/40 (TD/INT), 76.7 (Rate), 58.2% (Cmp%)
      Now here's O'Donnell:

So glad this video at 18:30 with the replays show Kordell getting interfered with because on other videos they don't show it and Colts fans complain about Kordell stepping out of bounds and coming back in on his TD at the end of the half.

Thank you for uploading a small amount of this series. It still does not replace having the entire ESPN Plus library (which didn’t even have the whole series) removed recently with zero explanation. In the age we live in with every network having a streaming service, why is this ENTIRE series not available for purchase somewhere? Moreover, why is there not an NFL Films app? I would pay $20 month easily to be able to watch every NFL’s Greatest Games episode. I’m sure you could think of other content to put on there as well. It’s a literal joke these are nowhere to be found for purchase.

The Hail Mary pass by Harbaugh still is taller about to this day lol. What a classic game and Bam Bam Morris played like The Bus that year

Harbaugh when surrounded with good talent like he had in 95 was a good leader. I remember thinking he was horrible when he was a Bear then really becoming a fan of his during this season. This colts team kind of reminds me of the 1980 Browns cardiac kids team. They didn't quit even when the other team was probably better. I was definitely pulling for them during this game. I'm a Raiders fan so come playoff time and we weren't in I went with the underdog colts. I was just sick of the cowboys and 49ers winning the super bowl all the time. Little did I know what was to come with Tom Brady winning all but 3 of the 10 or so he was in. Just to go to the super bowl that many times is crazy. Now that he seems to be retiring I wonder what team will be the next dynasty

Man I remember this game very well. I was 9 years old. Had just started watching football like 2 years prior. By now was really getting into it. Playing at school and stuff. My dad went to this game so I was solo watching it at home. Hell of a game. Insane how it came down to a Hail Mary attempt. My dad said you could literally hear a pin drop in the stadium on that last play lol. Crazy. Sucks though too because we went on to lose to Dallas in the Super Bowl in a rough game. I actually cried tears when we lost. It was heart wrenching but it was definitely a point where I knew I was a true Steelers fan. Now here I am 26 years later… die hard.

      Your'e right.
Back in '88 there was a strong possibility of a Bills vs Saints SB.
Although I would rather drive rusty nails through my fingertips, a lot of people would've enjoyed that match-up.
I think most people watch the SB no matter what teams are playing... I don't!
I didn't watch any of the Bill's SBs, because I just knew they were going to lose, unfortunately

    As a Colts fan ,
Marshall Faulk was injured that game . Zack Crockett was good that playoff.
About "didn't see it " , refs missed the Kordell Stewart out of bound back to receive the ball on that Touchdown.
Anyway it was really a good game .
    Tip the hat to Steelers
Harbaugh and Faulk made me a Colts fan that year of their fighting spirits and their Cinderella story. Before Peyton Manning era.
Faulk really won his SB with greatest show on turf Rams ( 1999 )
Jim finally won Big ten championship this season. ( Finally 26 years )
Thanks to Ted Marchiborda for that run.

This game was literally a game of inches for both teams. I still think the key play of this game was Willie Williams shoe string tackle on Lamont Warren on a third and one that got the Steelers the ball back, if he doesn't make that tackle the game probably ends.
You see other plays, the Colts drop an interception on the final offensive possession the Steelers have, O'Donnell completes a fourth and three pass to Andre Hastings to keep a drive alive for the Steelers, Chris Oldham drops an interception that could've ended the game for the Steelers, Randy Fuller literally saves the game on the final play, Classic game by both teams.
