    I’m in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. 40 years old. This was the one and only Steeler game I’ve ever been to. Money was tight growing up. I begged my Dad to get tickets to this game. He came through. I don’t even remember much about the game, except that final play. How quiet that stadium got for 3-4 seconds, and then the thunderous eruption. Somewhere i still have the ticket stubs and a fond memory of that awesome experience. Unfortunately as of recent years my family and i no longer speak. It was for the best. But i cherish this memory, when life as a young man was pretty simple.

      Dennis What makes it more amazing is that it looked like he might have caught the ball at first glance because the view is obstructed. This clip is the Colts radio announcer, but he wasn't the only one who screamed that he caught it. The NBC announcers also thought he caught it for a second. Imagine being a fan watching that live, hearing the announcers scream "HE CAUGHT IT" when in fact he did not. Amazing sequence there.

    As a Colts fan, this was one of the greatest and most heartbreaking moments ever...at the time. We sucked so bad for so long that when this playoff run came out of nowhere, it was all gravy. Yet, to this day, I will always be convinced that the Colts would have beaten the Cowboys in that Super Bowl. The following year, Indy went to Dallas and beat the Cowboys in Dallas in a great early season game. After that though, injuries killed the team and everything fell apart haha.

      Jim Harbough looked so happy today that I was reminded of the look on his face at the end of this 1995 game. I live in Green Bay and for a few seasons (I think), it was either Harbough's chin or Mike Tomzack's baby face. The Bears just never set their QBs upon for success in those days and, it was cool to see Jim - and, holy balls, is it Lindy Infante? Tony Mandarich? ROFL... OH, IT'S ALL COMING BACK TO ME NOW. Jim's incredulous expression at the end of this game has come to mind at least once a week for the last nearly-30 years. rofl.

      I can only imagine. I watched this game and was around 12. I am a Giants fan, I had no dog in this fight, but I wanted the plucky underdog Colts, I figured they've been bad the last few years, they might not be good again for a long time. This is their shot. Harbaugh seems to be magic, wouldn't that be amazing if he got them into the Super Bowl?
      I remember the final Steeler drive seeing them convert the 4th and 10, and seeing them hit that deep pass that I thought even then shouldn't have counted. He didn't really hold onto the ball going to the ground. I felt like they got away with one. Then the hail mary at the end. I SCREAMED in anguish at my tv set. To this day I cannot imagine a more gut-wrenching ending to a championship football game. And I root for a team that blew a 24-point 3rd quarter lead in the playoffs that culminated in an all time FG fiasco. I root for a team that blew a 21-point 4th quarter lead on a punt return TD at the gun that cost them the division and ultimately a playoff berth to their most hated rivals.
      All Bailey had to do was close his arms around the football as it lay on his body. I know everything happens so fast and there's bodies flying and the football is pinballing off everything. It's chaos. It's certainly understandable and I really do feel for him. But that slow mo replay showing the ball right on his gut for that 0.2 of a second. I can't imagine the psychological effect of missing that catch in that spot. Or even being a Colts fan in that moment. I do think he is a bit lucky that he didn't become a Jackie Smith-like figure though.

      I wonder where this would rank on the list of postseason upsets had Bailey held on.
      Jets-Colts in Super Bowl III will never be topped just because the circumstances will never be repeated. #2 for my money is the Jags knocking off Denver in Mile High in '96--arguably the best of the Elway Bronco teams until '98, and they hadn't lost at Mile High all season (and never would again with Elway at the helm). Vikings beating the '87 49ers is up there--the Vikings were better than their 8-7 record (0-3 in the scab games) but FootballOutsiders ranks the '87 Niners as one of the greatest regular-season teams ever, actually better than the '84 team that went 15-1. Super Bowl IV was almost as big of an upset as III--the Jets win notwithstanding, the AFL was still considered the inferior league. Giants-Patriots of course has to be under discussion--I think the one thing holding it back from a higher spot is how competitive their game was in Week 17.
      I'm not so sure that Colts-Steelers wouldn't be the #2 upset, at least in the Super Bowl Era.

    Die hard colts fan since I moved here around the age of 10 I'm 42 now and I remember where I was what I was doing what I was drinking the bud we were smoking, brick swag with seeds, I'll never forget it and I thought Floyd Turner had come down with that ball but on the instant replay you finally saw the highlight with that Steeler got just enough of the ball to make it roll out of Turner's lap I wish he just could have grasp it when he had the knowledge it was right by and squeezed it between his legs with both his arms and rolled up like a baby and just cradled that b**** I'll never forget that game one of the best games I've ever seen and the road to get there we played so well they called him Captain comeback Jim harbaugh because he had so many magic moments late in the season and into the playoffs and the Steelers were a very good team and if you remember later in the rivalry dude stripped Jerome bettis at the goal line Jerome absolutely never fumbles. and he was making like he was about at the 50 about to return it all the way and out of nowhere Big Ben roethlisberger slap the ball and his body and made him fall to the ground and that was it but interesting about that play the colts defensive back who returned that after the fumble by bettis was stabbed the night before buY his girlfriend so what if he was never stabbed what if what if what if what it is affected the play with the problem is he cut right back to the middle of the field giving Big Ben the only opportunity to make the play if he'd ran to either side line it's over we return it but he chose to like cut in front of roethlisberger to try to juke them with no need to roethlisberger was dang near on the ground and this series was great us and the Steelers they had so many plays so many things but I'll just say this as an Indianapolis fan we're good at f****** things up we've lost a lot of games we should have won in big moments so I'm just so glad that Peyton Manning got us that one ring and Andrew luck had Us in the AFC championship game people forget just how great Andrew was for about an eight nine year. He was f****** amazing here the biggest comeback or one of them versus the Chiefs it's like the third or fourth biggest and Manning had the secobd biggest after it was just broke this year by Kirk cousins versus the colts so I'm a colts fan I'll never forget these type of games we always seem to be in them we're just that franchise hey but at least we got one with Manning and I can hang my hat on that.

    "IF" Instant replay existed in the rules back then, well, it would have been the Colts in the Superbowl. Kordell Stewart went out of the back of the end zone and came back in to catch a TD 0:30 (he even later admitted it) ... in todays game it would have been incomplete/penalty.

    • @ryankey4980
      @ryankey4980 3 года назад +5

      Also the catch that put them on the 1 yard line and the go ahead score, would have been reversed to incomplete pass. He was in the act of falling when he caught the ball and dropped it when he hit the ground. He didn’t complete the process of making the catch.

    Agony, is the only word one can describe for any fan of the Indianapolis Colts. My number 2 team, behind my Chicago Bears. 1992, a truly remarkable year was the year I began to cheer for the underdog Colts. 1995, due to Captain Comeback Jim Harbaugh is when I truly became a fan of the Indianapolis Colts. What a year for the Colts this was. There I was, a junior in high school, guaranteeing everyone that a 9-7 team was going to win the Super Bowl. A team does not get any closer to the Super Bowl than the 1995 Indianapolis Colts. A great AFC Championship Game, but the sting of the end of this game still stings all these years later.

    One play not shown here was a huge tackle by Willie Williams on a third down play on Lamont Warren. He had a gaping hole to the right side to run for a long gain, but Williams shoe string tackle gave the Steelers the ball back.
    This literally was a game of inches for both teams. The Colts dropped an INT that could have sealed the win, Neil O'Donnell completes, ironically, a fourth and 3 pass to Andre Hastings to keep a drive alive that led to a Steeler touchdown, Chris Oldham drops an INT when the Colts got the ball back after the Steelers scored to take a 20-16 lead, and of course the Hail Mary break up in the end zone by Randy Fuller on Aaron Bailey. Classic game.

    Perfect Hail Mary pass by Harbaugh - you figure there's at best a 1 in 4 chance it will be caught by one of your guys so all you can do is lay it up there to give them the best chance. So many times you see QB's throw it out of the end zone, throw it too low so that it's easy to knock down, throw it out of bounds, etc. Harbaugh placed this one pretty much perfectly (middle of the end zone) and had a soft enough touch on it that it wasn't going to be easy for the DB's to knock down.
