    I love my Jems and own a 77P-BFP. However, it's not a Japanese Jem. It's made in Indonesia. I really, really want a Majesty tho...

    That JEM tone reminds me of JP's Picasso JPM's, there must be something in there that's native to Ibanez models in general

    Both are equipped with Dimarzios, yet the Majesty had a much fuller, rounded tone. It seemed more appropriate for the different types of music. It totally 'blew the Jem out of the water' on "Is This Love?"

      Yes, very well observated! Quite some tonal differences going on between them both, but especially evident when playing clean. Thanks for watching!

    Great review and comparison. Very nice playing too 👍.
    I have both and love both. The Jem has stock Evolutions, the Monarchy has the stock Sonic Ecstacys.
    The Sonic Ecstasys are a bit hotter so, for the same amp setup, I need to dial the gain back a few dBs comparatively. They're both really versatile with different tonal qualities.
    I prefer the Jem single-coil versus the Majesty split coils, but prefer the more buttery tones of the Monarchy humbuckers over the Evos, which are brighter and a bit more brittle. The Ecstacys can also easily be dialled in for sheer brutality, which can sound awesome. I just don't seem to be able to get quite the same brutality out of the Jem.
    Playability, the Monarchy wins hands down for comfort, I simply don't have fight with it like I do on the Jem. Probably my dumpy fingers, but the Monarchy neck profile fits a lot easier. Having said that, I love the Jem and am more than happy to put in the extra effort to get what I want out of it.
    The Monarchy bridge and locking tuners are a lot easier to work with than all the hassle of the Jem double-locking Edge3, but once set up properly, tuning stability is virtually bomb-proof on both.
    I do find the Monarchy slightly more susceptible to slight de-tuning with temperature. Not much in it, but it's definitely there.
    If I had to choose one, it'd probably be the Majesty, but I'd definitely miss the Jem.
    My tuppence-worth.

    I suppose the most notable 7 string Jem player aside from Steve Vai would have been John Petrucci. It's what he used as his main 7 string rig before he got hooked up with Music Man. In fact, Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, and Scenes from a Memory all had the Jem on it. It might have also been on Six Degrees, I'm not sure at what point exactly he switched to Ernie Ball. I think he took out the prototype on the Live Scenes from New York, so Six Degrees may have been that first album with an EBMM.

    The pickguard is a highlight of the JEM guitars (as well as the RG), a very nice detail, without which this guitar doesn't look as good. In addition, when you remove the peakguard, holes from the screws remain on the body.. This is not cool

    Personally I think playing the Majesty is much easier. The upper fret access is better than any other guitar and I don't mind the high gloss on the neck. I thought I would but once I start playing I really don't care. Never noticed that it's any more or less sticky than the oil-finish necks. I also think the Majesty has better ergonomics over all vs. the Ibanez. That being said I wish the Majesty didn't have that first fret logo or the JP signature on the headstock. If it didn't I would have several. As it is though I just don't feel like playing gigs on some dude's signature guitar, be it Vai, Petrucci, Satriani, Hammet, Mustain, or whoever. This is why I'm liking my trusty Fender Strat more and more. I have one that I installed two humbuckers, Floyd Rose tremolo and a coil switch so I can go in full single coil mode. Talk about versatility. It's crazy. Majesty is good for one thing: heavy metal and by that I mean clean heavy metal sound or distorted. It does that very well. However it doesn't do jazz, blues, classic rock or any of that stuff very well (that Purple Haze you did sounded horrible on both guitars and nothing like the original even though you played it very very well and did your jop 100%). So gigging with it is - for me - very very limiting. If your band does any cover tunes it's probably not going to be Dream Theater covers and for all that I go to my amazing rigged out and trusty Fender. PLUS it's no one's signature but mine. lol

    Do you find the nut width / string spacing to be a bit more narrow in the EBMMs? I always seem to have an adjustment period when switching from one to the other and find clean chording easier on the Jem.

    • @artificialinsolence3182
      @artificialinsolence3182  4 года назад +2

      Nah, the nut width is pretty standard on EBMMs with 43mm. What is different is the fretboard radius. The Majesty has a 17" and the JEM a 15.7" radius, which makes it a little easier to play chords cleanly.
