I think this is brilliant! People are attending a Jazz Festival and they are treated to just about the most basic fiddle tune there is - one that every beginning fiddler learns in their first lessons - with only three chords in it - and the crowd goes absolutely nuts! They love it!
Music is indeed a universal language. Fiddle rules.
Music.Perhaps the first words ever spoken in truth
Never thought Boil em Cabbage Down could sound like that 🙂

Jazz for me is basically the ground stone to make every type of music into something that everyone can love 👏👏
Not only is this the best rendition of this song that I have ever head, it’s the most fun one. What a combination of feelings and musicians.
Being a fiddler myself, I wondered how Wynton would fare -- Lordy, he showed his stuff ! Not to be denied. And I'm glad he introduced it as African-American in origin.
How he would fare? He could step into just about anything and blow minds wide open and aside from the obvious decibel discrepancy he'd drop into any bluegrass circle and kill. He's a living smithsonian collection. Ethnomusicologist who can bring his own to all of it. Like Yo Yo Ma and the silk road project, when you play at THAT level it transcends far and wide.
I used to play the violin so I can say, he played very well.
Aslo as s a "fiddler" myself I wouldn't want to be on the same stage with Wynton Marsalis staring me down from 3 feet away.
Mark O'Connor - respect for making Wynton smile
Man Mark O Connor looks like he was having Soo much fun with this tune.
This just oozes mutual respect and class between all those on stage, i often visit this music clip and its still a wonderful experience
Mark O'Connor and Wynton Marsalis are heavenly magic together. I too am obsessed with their collaborations
This is the best of America.
Its increíble how they can mix country and jazz in a so awesome way...
This ain't country music my friend. It's bluegrass, and it's also one of the most ancient traditional tunes in bluegrass, which is most likely African American in origin. America at its best.
@@banjo2019 Bluegrass musicians have been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Mark O'Connor's fiddle style is Texas swing rather than bluegrass. He himself will tell you that the earliest official recording by a country musician was Texas fiddler Eck Robertson's version of Sally Goodin. Also, the famous white fiddle he played in most of his competition wins now hangs in the Country Hall Of Fame.
Bluegrass is a relatively recent phenomenon developed in the 1940's - so you can't really have an ancient bluegrass tune, though you can have a bluegrass interpretation of an old time tune.
@@banjo2019if you’re gonna argue it’s not country, it’s silly to argue it’s bluegrass. Old-time would probably be the best classification if we want to talk about “origins” but just calling it folk music would also do
Literally every player is first rate. Such a marvelous concert! Love the convergence of styles.
HOT HOT HOT !!!!!!! Mark, what a treat to see you having such a great time, smilin, dancin & fiddlin. Mr. Marsalis, you & your band are amazing, bless your heart for teaming up with Mark....BOIL'em Cabbage Down....That's what musics all about.....BRAVO!!!!! and THANKS!!!! Becky Ryan
The happiness of the moment just permeates through the music, it's awesome.
AWESOME PERFORMANCE ALL THE MUSICIANS WERE INCREDIBLE
This was 3 years ago, I wasn't into fiddle at all at the time; now I'm obsessed, I play all day and I watch this video every day.
If you had told me that I would ever see Wynton and Mark Jamming on Bile 'em Cabbage Down I would have been willing to bet you were wrong, but here it is. Ain't music grand?
JimmyDeLocke o
indeed it is
All about the music! And its superb!
Unexpected and awe inspiring
This is a stellar performance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My country would be in much better condition if this video had 16 million views.
Marsalis has this evolution nicely arranged- starting with Mark O'Connor's solo fiddle, then the band joins in with 'simple' country accompaniment, followed by an increasingly modern jazz arrangement.
this makes my life complete
I am not a researcher. I have a passion for old time mountain music and so read extensively about it. I am fortunate to have many knowledgeable acquaintances as well. Hopefully, together we will gain some understanding about these fascinating issues.
I just started this year on his fiddle books, only on about my 9th song of book number 1, but this INSPIRES ME to keep going!!! It is silly that this brings tears to my eyes...? :'-) Absolutely moving.
What a great combination: Wynton Marsalis on the trumpet and Mark O'Connors on the fiddle doing one of my very favorite fiddle tunes. Here in North Carolina, I remember the song being referred to sometimes as "'Bile' Them Cabbage Down."
Funny you're from NC. I think the first time this city boy heard this song may have been done by Sheriff Andy Taylor.
It's good to see the African background of these old-time tunes recognized. Would be great to see a revival of this type of music in African-American culture.
Check out the Carolina Chocolate Drops and Rhiannen Giddons. That's a big part of what they do, and it's amazing.
What s many don't recognize, and indeed try to hide, is that this musical culture is shared.... having its roots among all the poor of the southern states and the Appalachians........and their ancestors from Europe and Western Africa.....
Always one of my favorites, and they play it so well! I have just started violin lessons (I'm 72 now) Something to strive far. Ha, Ha. I better practice more.
+bsnenninger I Play with a gal 96 years old,,and she is going strong . all i can say is Keep it up....Music will Keep you young
bsnenninger Well, it’s three years ago, wondering how you got on in the meantime. The test is to match proficient fiddle players like this that can keep going forever, say nothing and never actually arrive...
You can't make this up. If only politicians could get along like musicians the world would be a much better place.
I AGREE I AGREE I AGREE.......I know a leader whom needs to learn fiddle
They don't want to get along; they want to be boss, and bully ever one else. " YOU ARE SLAVE! I DON'T HAVE TO RESPECT YOUR RIGHTS! YOU HAVE TO RESPECT MINE! YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RIGHTS! ALL RIGHTS ARE MINE!"
There is only one way to deal with that crap. A fist in the mouth, or a bullet in the head.
You mean like the kerflufle due to his statements regarding Mr Suzuki?
Ye p it's complete now thank to you. Some idiot brought up race was waiting on the next idiot to bring up politics. Well done sir idiot
Yes Sir!! Absolutely!
Bela would have been a welcome addition. This is awesome. Mark has joined many greats and many genres on stage and in the studio.
Every musician present is "best in class" for mastering the tools of their trade....their body and facial expressions of artistic respect and admiration is as powerful as the sound they produced. This is Americana.....So glad I found it
This is classic fiddling to me - yeah ....and having Wynton Marsalis also - great!
Wynton is the man...this is flat out solid shit! Mark O'Connor fiddles around like no one's business...what a superb arrangement!!!
This is some hot jam! Go on Mark. Blow that horn Wynton like you own it.
I have seen this video more than a dozen times, and it still never fails to make me smile.
Best 7.5 minutes on RUclips!
All these musicians Geniuses.
Wow, what a totally cool, foot stomping, hand clapping arrangement of this old great tune. Just goes to show you can take something 'basic' and simple & in the right hands, turn it into a Masterpiece. The 'thumbs down' just do NOT appreciate GREAT music. FIDDLE ROCKS!! Brilliant job Mark.
It just doesn't get any better than this!
Simple music, fantastic musicians, and massive heart! Who could not grin and bounce through this? If we had this skill and talent in politics, world peace would break out tomorrow. Love these guys.
That was incredible.
This is but a glimpse of the glorious things that come from the spirit of America. How I wish we would all find unity in the good things here and let go of the disunity in all the bad things. America isn't heaven. And surely her gowns are stained, but she's still the most beautiful of all the nations ever set upon this dusty ole earth.
Amen. Especially when we go outside and 99.9 percent of us all get along wonderfully.
I was hoping they would get to Wynton Marsalas. My favorite Boil the Cabbage. Never thought I would say that.
Modern jazz isn't dull, it's actully quite fun...
Great job on this song. Mark O'Connor can play anything with strings on it and do it fantastically. Also, check out the guitar player.....none other than Frank Vignola. He's done some awesome playing with Tommy Emmanuel on U-Tube.
Brilliant. I’m thankful fully that this was documented. This is truly historic.
2023 learning this on my dulcimer in Berea, Ky. Blow me away, Gentlemen 😮❤.
Apart from being among the best trumpet players on Earth Wynton Marsalis is a class act.
This wasn't always so, but it's a tribute to the man (and probably his pops) that he eventually, by diving deep into the Black American songbook, that he came out of his musical ghetto and became a living practitioner of that songbook in all its diverse glory..
nothing but joy!
This is a great session. The audience gets right into the feel of the number.
I like how it starts off slowly, then gradually gets exciting and fun
Fusion of cultures beautiful. People of the world take note
I love the way the melody is present in his leads. Re(mark)able.
Almost made it to the three-minute Mark I'm crying
I first learned this song when I played the violin in middle school. This is an amazing job, and must have took alot of practice. Nice job!
First song I learned too ... however, never sounded like this, and still doesn't! Incredible!
Underrated how crowd starts clapping on 1 & 3 and Wynton later shows them how it’s done.
Simply exhilarating! I remember hearing people play Boil 'em Cabbage Down and thinking it sounds like garbage. Mark, you can make anything sound exquisite!
Please let see a live show with this cast before I die! 😊🎶. Absolutely incredible!!!!!
Pure joy! Wonder how 37 at this point could not find anything to like about this performance?
Such a great musician. Saw him concert in Lake Jackson Texas few years ago-amazing guy. Never heard such great fiddle playing before.
That guy is awesome at playing boil them cabbage down he is very talented!🎻🎼🎼
Mr. Mike Finlay from Fife, Tx. played the best version of "Boil them Cabbage" I've ever heard. Was honored to play drums behind this man.
fantastic...
There is an African-American string band that has been reclaiming the African-American origins of old-time music in recent years. They're called the Carolina Chocolate Drops and have many 1st rate performances on youtube.
BanjoInKorea. Oh yes chocolate drops that girl can really sing.
I
Thanks for sharing about the CCD, checking them out now! Pretty awesome sound.
Black k folks seem to claim they created everything welp being fro, the area this song was actually created living by the people that created it it's a lie. Bluegrass was seen as white folk music and black folks hated bluegrass because of it. Therefore they sought a different style out of spite. This music is thousand of years older than the lie your m perpetrating.
They did mention the audience is in France Music conveys equally to all nations and emotions as art
Being a purist, and having heard all the versions from the 1939 Bill Monroe Grand Ole Opry performance, through the Stanley Brothers, the comic Smothers Brothers, and all the rest, I nevertheless agree wholeheartedly that this is the best. It embodies all the cross-influences, the various traditions, the community, the brotherhood, of music. It is America on stage.
Yikes. I love how Wynton listens, listens, and then blammo! Then easing back out with a nice repetition of the melody to bring it home. Sweet Jebus.
I agree, fantastic, all he needs is the base and rhythm guitar. Piano and drums? No way. Does not surprise me how much the audience enjoyed it. Those old tunes are timeless and keep the soul happy.
I need to change my underdungers, I'll be back in a minute.
Amazing stuff!!
For such a simple tune, these two masters of improv gave an outstanding performance.
this is the first time I have ever heard mixed on-beat / off-beat audience clapping that didn't even matter
Haha - I think it NEEDED to be that way :-)
Love this ,my husband was a great Trumpet player , a very good medicine for these times
Two of the best of the best👏👏👏👏🎶
I love playing this song with my viola!!!
yeaaaah
This is superb music! Beautiful!
👏👏 amazing performance!
Now that is FUN!!!
Thanks for posting, Mark.....now to teach the French how to "clap" to American Bluegrass/jazz! Super, super job.
simply the best! the beating heart and vibrating soul of Black American music at its core is simple. pure joy. pure beauty.
How incredible this is!
The only versions I've ever heard of this is The Smother's Brothers, and Prairie Home. This is so fun.
How amazing.
Blugrass fushioned into Jazz.
Wish I could improvise but I lose track of the tune when I try, so I have to stick with playing straight !! 🎻🎶🎻🎶
Love it!
This is GREAT! Thanks for the post!
Man, that's good to see and hear!
Wow, love this rendition.
In the O'Connor Method books there are at least 5 variations of this tune for students to learn.
Now THAT was really great!!!!!
Fantastic!
Brilliant!
