In today's video we take a look at a Lovely little BMW Z4 that I've had in stock for a little longer than I should. I can't figure out why it won't sell, is it the black wheels, is it just the poor weather or is there something else? I use Carly to check it out!

Black wheels look naff to me and suggest the car will not be looked after or perhaps chipped. Great engine, seemed a bit pricey. Love the channel, keep it up.

Black wheels immediately put me off a car advert.
Never liked a black or dark wheel. Gunmetal grey at the most but you cant go wrong with silver on a resale.
On black rims to me it screams Gangsta.
This is my old car - Defo not clocked was on 82K when I sold it, 73k when I purchased it
It is a Sport highline so has Idrive, cruise control, extend lighting pack, extended storage, F&R parking sensors, heated seats so a very decent spec compared to most z4s.
Regards the wheels, it had silver wheels when I sold it and they looked far better, black makes them lose definition, the white paint is probably one of the better colours as its shows the lines on the car really well, lots of these are second cars and people want a manual for their weekend toy.
The car is in really great condition, has a superb spec and only 4 owners I think, when I owned it nothing went wrong, it really is a cracking car.
Servicing at an Indie is not expensive, tyres are fairly reasonable and insurance was not that expensive for me anyway
The spring is coming so will probably sell pretty quickly then.

It s cracking car and drove really well, 30 round town and over 40 on a run if driven sensibly

Sell wheels, buy in silver 18 inch non run flat, helps the feel and reduces the bumps a bit.
It’s a bit pricey for this time of year, knock it down to £7,999, refurb the wheels and it should stand a better chance of selling
Sold quite a few of these in the past it’s been mainly older to middle-aged people that buy them as second cars and buy on mileage, I never buy anything over 50k max, around 30k sells best 3.0 is the favourite. The old saying in trade was sell all convertibles by end of July…
I have a 2016 Black BMW Z4 and I’ve just had my wheels powder coated in gloss black. I’ve also had my Callipers powder coated in Red and the result looks fantastic. It looks a ‘Mean Machine’
Looks good, try the wheel colour used on M140/240 stock wheels, that would be a nice touch.

Just wanted to comment on the plug for the Carly as most people wouldnt be aware that it carries a yearly subscription that auto renews and if you cancel before renewel you lose most features of the app rendering it pretty useless. best channel i subscribe to on youtube, keep it up

Very interesting. In my fantasy garage I have one of these as they seem at the moment to be remarkable value for money. Gunmetal grey would look a a little more sophisticated against the white......... Then what do I know, I predicted the Mini Goodwood edition would increase like crazy but didn't take a chance when they were just £5-£6k !!

It’s not the weather just bought my e46 m3 convertible in the freeze in December and had the roof off. If it’s dry it’s off
I’m not too sure it’s the weather as I’ve just brought a convertible in Dec 2023, however like most people I expect the car price to reflect that in winter. I like gloss black wheels but on this particular car and colour then original silver is better, but it would not put me personally buying it. If I was you I’d buy a set of silver wheels and sell the black wheels, then hopefully you will not incur a big difference and the car will be back to stock
Silver wheels 🛞 but wondering if it’s the stiff jittery ride as you noted, that might be putting folk off!
Nothing beats a silver alloy. Black wheels look like silver ones covered in brake dust.
my last car had black gloss wheels and made the car look naff,got them painted in shiny silver and car looked so much better

Could change the wheel size to 17's and have a slightly bigger side wall might help. Worth a try!
I’m one of those who like black wheels however it does depends on car. This is one where I think silver would suit it better. For me I’d want an auto so is it that is manual that’s stopping it selling ?

It smacks of smack head gangsta car. The local bad boy or villan type of upgrade. Get it original as it's meant to be and it will attract the right sort of customer rather than making them think about who had it and the life it's had
Probably the cost of ownership after the sale, the car is a great price however servicing tyres how much will the alloy cost...
This looks like a great weekend car but I don't think the black wheels are doing you any favours.

As a non lover of black wheels full stop, this car would benefit with either silver or grey.
Weather dependent bud, I've got 6 sports cars in, they'll be up for sale March, but tbh there all year round now, I had a z4 last year and it took ages to sell, when it went I'd not made much, had plenty of work on it as well, ended up putting it cheap on FB.
The black wheels just look wrong with the white body - when I see black wheels they always seem cheap to me, even when they are professionally done.
Buying a convertible in September is brave as it may miss the boat until Feb / March
Had a colleague who had one of those - went in it once - ride was sooooo hard - big no no. Is there an option to soften the ride?
And those wheels - agree other comments - definitely better in silver.
Absolutely don't get the M Sport version with 19" rims and runflats all of which make the ride crap! I have the standard verison on 18" with normal tyres and the ride is great!

Black wheels might put me off a bit as I assume it’s been ragged. Saying that I’ve had my wheels done in black (original wheel design wasn’t nice and they look way better now!)
Currently looking for a z4, purely based on my searches, the price is the issue, not the wheels.
My mate has just redone his wheels in shadow chrome, and they look epic. It really lifts his BMW. I guess it's subjective. The black wheels don't worry me. I don't really like white cars, but that's just me, I know a lot of people do. I think if I was looking I'd probably be looking for a bit less mileage. I guess as others have said it's a second car for middle aged drivers. I have to say though I don't really know why but if I was buying it wouldn't be one that was on my radar, I'd rather go for something like an MX5 Mk4 ND. Just more all round fun. But as I say its so subjective.

Personally, I would avoid anything with black wheels, but not as much as I would avoid 3d number plates.
The steering wheel looks very worn / shiny. Does it need a clean? Could it be that & other touch points like the gearstick & handles showing the 80k+ miles?
I have a black Z4 and recently put a poll up on the Z4 forum regarding wheel colour choice, the options were leave them silver, redo them in gold or redo them in black and red (I have split rims), the overwhelming majority voted for silver, followed by very few for gold and finally just three or so for black and red! Now that should have told me somehting but I defied all logic and had them done black and red 😂 knowing though come resale time I would have to put them back to silver. I would suspect your buyer pool will be massively smaller with black wheels on a white car. People are boring and can't seem to grasp colours! The only other point is perhaps revise the price? In the end though you could have everything right but some cars just stick, as an ex motor trader this has happened to me more than once!
2.5 Liter - I guess the VED rates would put a lot of people off as well ?

Really nice car but I'd have the 350 slk myself. Looks nice in white and sounds fantastic. You are spot on,the black wheels look horrible, I hate them with a passion it would definitely put me off this car.

The price is pretty average, and the black wheels might be a love-it-or-hate-it choice. But hey, if you're a fan, they're a nice little bonus! I reckon the reason it's still around is that these cars don't sell fast unless they're dirt cheap. It's a small market, especially this time of year when the economy for weekend cars is a bit slow. Honestly, Z4s at around this price have held their prices quite well for the past year when compared to much more expensive luxury sports cars. This car would sell quicker in the summertime unless it hits the spot for someone randomly who just needs the car urgently. My Z4 has been parked up for winter, so I wouldn't be looking right now if I was in the market, this seems typical for most owners.

You’re basically waiting for John, 56 from Devon to feel the warm Summer air tickle him and make him think about a cabrio again. It’s an old person’s car, rightly or wrongly. It’s not popular with a young demographic, it doesn’t carry the same ‘clout’ as others in the same price bracket on social media which hypes up a lot of things. On the same line, in the price bracket it is, it’s not the most fun you can have for the money. If you’re lucky, an estate agent might fancy it.

Do the cam chains snap on those engines? That could be a reason if they do? We stopped buying BMW’s because of the potential failure.
Black wheels have a time & place imo. Look great on certain things like mini's imo, but on a Z4? Never. Especially when considering the kinda people who drive Z4's

Yeah black wheels are a big no for me. They just cheapen the look of the car and make it look unloved and abused as per the demographic of boy racers (who couldn't afford to run this anyway). They show up the dirt after 30 minutes of use as well. Silver wheels for the win - they would make it look far more expensive. Glad it sold - I enjoy watching your channel!

Although I'm not a lover of black wheels it wouldn't put me off buying it providing there was still a fair bit of meat left on them. However it's the mileage that's a big turn off to me even though it might come with a large service history. Its done more miles than my 1981 Porsche 924 that I've owned for the best part of 40 yrs. I would rather look for a low mileage example of similar age.
Weather, manual and white for me....
if you say something might be wrong - in this case the black wheels, then many just jump on the bandwagon and reconfirm your assumtions. i think the black alloys are a great contrast with the white bodywork. imo its the wrong season to sell a drop top and i think the price is a tad on the high side - reduce price by £1k to see if you get any bites , its a depreciating asset sitting on your forecourt for 5 months. i have a white merc s204 and i have recently sourced a set of black amg spoked 19" alloys and it looks like the doggies danglies - ive had people come up to me in the petrol station asking me if i would consider selling it to them.
Maybe try dropping the price!

Every ones car is personal, from external colour to leather or cloth interior, but being someone who of the older generation I have not seen a car which looks good with black alloys. Wether a bmw or Range Rover, as I said it’s a personal choice, but will a 19 year old buy this car? 😀
why would i buy a slower 2.5l n52 when theres a 3.0l n52 version out there aswell... 150kw in a sports car isnt much nowadays... 6.6s to 60 is slow nowadays too... 190kw 3.0 sounds alot better in that regard.... and they are basically same engine... all the maintenance is the same....
but i would not buy any of those... n54 twin turbo all the way for me... few boltons and you have a 400+hp little rocket... double the hp of that 2.5l and can hang with the more modern stuff aswell.
I miss old school deep dish rims .
£9.5k plus finance tops it up to almost £11.5k for a single person or weekend warrior second car .
It’s a lot of money in hard pressed times for a car that’s 13 years old . Not the most practical.
You also have to consider the other convertibles in the market that it’s up against.

Black alloys look cheap. Like someone has stolen the hubcaps.
Rough ride - is it on run flats?
As for it selling - it'll be easier when it's warm, but at the right price anything sells.

I love the black wheels on the white car. Very monochrome. But then I am from the east end. I would not want it because its clear how old it is, and people who want showy cars are about the image. Try putting on one of the private plates you have on the wall in your office, it might help of a car that is all about looks 👌
Get rid of the black wheels….silver looks clean, and says unmodified…which some people get their knickers in a twist about.
Also give the headlights a refresh with xenon bulbs instead of that horrible yellow.
I detest black wheels with a passion, completely hides the design of the alloy, gets dirty incredibly quickly and chips just from looking at it too long.

Who wants a convertible in rainy Britain costing over nine grand for a old car? Very few.
For me, it didn't come out of the factory with black wheels - so I would dismiss it. Its tacky when done after market, nice car though
Yep, in my opinion, black wheels on a car (of that type) aren’t right - the buyer demographic for that is mostly like an older female. They’re not generally down with the “black wheel” thing. Needs to be silver all day..
If it was an M140, Golf R etc then perhaps black…
Tbh a Z4 in my experience is driven by female marketing managers / business types , and they would generally prefer black or a metallic colour car plus importantly Automatic .
If I.. a bloke was to spend 9k on a manual sports car , it would be a wee old Porsche boxster . Or for more of z4 type tourer would have to be an Auto and not white .
But yes wheels would be better silver , and come May I’m sure you will get more interest . Best of luck .

I think part of the problem could be wrong time of year for drop top and it is a bit overpriced for the mileage and year, about 6K it might shift

Imo it's because it's a convertible. Most of the insurance companies have a small print saying they won't pay a penny if something happens with the occupants in an accident (you don't have much protection if the car flips over). And the weather is quite crap so not really practical in the UK if it would be used daily
Original wheels would be better. Money is too big if you ask me? Plus it's the wrong time of year, of course.
